Magnetic excitations in double perovskite iridates La2_{2}M\mathit{M}IrO6_{6} (M\mathit{M} = Co, Ni, and Zn) mediated by 3d\mathit{d}-5d\mathit{d} hybridization

By performing resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements at the Ir L3\mathit{L_{\mathrm{3}}} edge, we have investigated the low-energy elementary excitations in a series of double perovskite iridate single crystals, La2_{2}M\mathit{M}IrO6_{6} (M\mathit{M} = Co, Ni, and Zn). Almost dispersionless magnetic excitations at ∼\sim 42(6) meV and ∼\sim 35(5) meV have been observed in crystals containing magnetic 3d\mathit{d} ions, La2_{2}CoIrO6_{6} and La2_{2}NiIrO6_{6}, respectively. In contrast, this low-energy magnetic excitation is absent in La2_{2}ZnIrO6_{6} in which the 3d\mathit{d} ions are non-magnetic, suggesting the importance of 3d\mathit{d}-5d\mathit{d} hybridization in the magnetic properties of these double perovskite iridates. The magnetic excitation is suppressed completely above the magnetic ordering temperature, suggesting the inadequacy of using a simple spin Hamiltonian to describe magnetism of these materials.

Local structural distortion induced by antiferromagnetic ordering in Bi2_2Fe4_4O9_9 studied using neutron total scattering analysis

To unravel the origin of the dielectric anomaly at the antiferromagnetic ordering of magnetoelectric Bi2_2Fe4_4O9_9 we performed neutron powder diffraction measurements across the Neˊ\acute{\rm e}el temperature, TNT_{\rm N}. Both local structures and long-range symmetry are studied using the complementary analyses of atomic pair distribution function (PDF) and Rietveld methods at temperatures 300~K, 250~K, and 200~K. We present that PDF peaks which reflect local atomic arrangements exhibit a noticeable variation below TNT_{\rm N} without long-range symmetry change. The implication of the PDF evolution is discussed in view of a local structural distortion at the onset of the antiferromagnetic ordering.

Spin-Chiral Bulk Fermi Surfaces of BiTeI Proven by Quantum Oscillations

We present the Fermi-surface map of the spin-chiral bulk states for the non-centrosymmetric semiconductor BiTeI using de Haas-van Alphen and Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations. We identify two distinct Fermi surfaces with a unique spindle-torus-type topology and the non-trivial Berry phases, confirming the spin chirality with oppositely circulating spin-texture. Near the quantum limit at high magnetic fields, we find a substantial Zeeman effect with an effective g-factor of ~ 60 for the Rashba-split Fermi surfaces. These findings provide clear evidence of strong Rashba and Zeeman coupling in the bulk states of BiTeI, suggesting that BiTeI is a good platform hosting the spin-polarized chiral states.

Epitaxial growth of multiferroic Pb(Zr0.57Ti0.43)O3-Pb(Fe2/3W1/3)O3 solid-solution thin films and their magnetoelectric effects

We report on epitaxial growth of single-phase [Pb(Zr0.57Ti0.43)O3]0.8[Pb(Fe2/3W1/3)O3]0.2 (PZT-PFW) solid-solution thin films using pulsed laser deposition. X-ray diffraction measurements reveal that the films have a tetragonal structure. The films exhibit ferroelectric properties and weak ferromagnetic responses at room temperature. Magnetoelectric effects were investigated; the nonlinear magnetoelectric coefficient was measured and found to be comparable to those of multiferroic hexagonal manganites, but at least two orders of magnitude smaller than that for polycrystalline PZT-PFW films.

Quasi-particle scattering and protected nature of topological states in a parent topological insulator Bi2_2Se3_3

We report on angle resolved photoemission spectroscopic studies on a parent topological insulator (TI), Bi2_2Se3_3. The line width of the spectral function (inverse of the quasi-particle lifetime) of the topological metallic (TM) states shows an anomalous behavior. This behavior can be reasonably accounted for by assuming decay of the quasi-particles predominantly into bulk electronic states through electron-electron interaction and defect scattering. Studies on aged surfaces reveal that topological metallic states are very much unaffected by the potentials created by adsorbed atoms or molecules on the surface, indicating that topological states could be indeed protected against weak perturbations.

Giant Magnetoelectric Effect in a Multiferroic Material with a High Ferroelectric Transition Temperature

We present a unique example of giant magnetoelectric effect in a conventional multiferroic HoMnO3, where polarization is very large (~56 mC/m2) and the ferroelectric transition temperature is higher than the magnetic ordering temperature by an order. We attribute the uniqueness of the giant magnetoelectric effect to the ferroelectricity induced entirely by the off-center displacement of rare earth ions with large magnetic moments. This finding suggests a new avenue to design multiferroics with large polarization and higher ferroelectric transition temperature as well as large magnetoelectric effects.

From Cooperative Paramagnet to Néel Order in Y_2Ru_2O_7

Spin correlations in the pyrochlore antiferromagnet Y_2Ru_2O_7 with Curie-Weiss temperature ΘCW=−1100Θ_{CW}=-1100 K and critical temperature T_N=77 K were examined through neutron scattering. For TN<T<ΘCW/3T_N<T<Θ_{CW}/3 the data show spin relaxation with a rate ℏΓ=1.17(9)kBT\hbarΓ= 1.17(9)k_BT. For T<T_N spectral weight moves to higher energies with substantial changes up to 4×kBTN4\times k_BT_N. For T<<T_N there is a Δ=11(1)Δ=11(1) meV energy gap and a pronounced spectral maximum at 19.7 meV. Throughout the temperature range examined the wave vector dependence of inelastic scattering exhibits a broad peak for Qd≈3.8Qd\approx 3.8 (d is Ru-Ru spacing) consistent with dipolar spin correlations.

Inhomogeneous level splitting in Pr2−x_{2-x}Bix_xRu2_2O7_7

We report that Bi doping drives Prx_xBi2−x_{2-x}Ru2_2O7_7 from an antiferromagnetic insulator (x=2x=2) to a metallic paramagnet (x≈1x\approx 1) with a broad low TT maximum in C/TC/T. Neutron scattering reveals local low energy spin excitations (ℏω≈1\hbarω\approx 1 meV) with a spectrum that is unaffected by heating to kBT>>ℏωk_BT>>\hbarω. We show that a continuous distribution of splittings of the non-Kramers Pr3+^{3+} ground state doublet such as might result from various types of lattice strain can account for all the data.
