Band-Mott mixing hybridizes the gap in Fe$_2$Mo$_3$O$_8$

We combined optical spectroscopy and first principles electronic structure calculations to reveal the charge gap in the polar magnet Fe$_2$Mo$_3$O$_8$. Iron occupation on the octahedral site draws the gap strongly downward compared to the Zn parent compound, and subsequent occupation of the tetrahedral site creates a narrow resonance near the Fermi energy that draws the gap downward even further. This resonance is a many-body effect that emanates from a flat valence band in a Mott-like state due to screening of the local moment - similar to expectations for a Zhang-Rice singlet, except that here, it appears in a semi-conductor. We discuss the unusual hybridization in terms of orbital occupation and character as well as the structure-property relationships that can be unveiled in various metal-substituted systems (Ni, Mn, Co, Zn).

Chiral Electronic Excitations in a Quasi-2D Rashba System BiTeI

The optical transitions between spin-polarized bands of the quasi-two dimensional Rashba system BiTeI are investigated using polarization resolved resonant Raman spectroscopy. We detect chiral excitations between states with opposite helicity and compare spectra to calculations within a three-band model. Using the resonant Raman excitation profile, we deduce the Rashba parameters and band gaps of the higher conduction bands near the Fermi level, and compare the parameters to values obtained by ab initio density function theory (DFT).

Neutron diffraction in MnSb2O6: Magnetic and structural domains in a helicoidal polar magnet with coupled chiralities

MnSb$_{2}$O$_{6}$ is based on the structural chiral $P$321 space group #150 where the magnetic Mn$^{2+}$ moments ($S=5/2$, $L\approx 0$) order antiferromagnetically at $T_\mathrm{N}=12$ K. Unlike the related iron based langasite (Ba$_3$NbFe$_3$Si$_2$O$_{14}$) where the low temperature magnetism is based on a proper helix characterized by a time-even pseudoscalar `magnetic' chirality, the Mn$^{2+}$ ions in MnSb$_{2}$O$_{6}$ order with a cycloidal structure at low temperatures, described instead by a time-even vector `magnetic' polarity. A tilted cycloidal structure has been found [M. Kinoshita et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 047201 (2016)] to facilitate ferroelectric switching under an applied magnetic field. In this work, we apply polarized and unpolarized neutron diffraction analyzing the magnetic and nuclear structures in MnSb$_{2}$O$_{6}$ with the aim of understanding this magnetoelectric coupling. We find no evidence for a helicoidal magnetic structure with one of the spin envelope axes tilted away from the cycloidal $c$-axis. However, on application of a magnetic field $\parallel$ $\vec{c}$ the spin rotation plane can be tilted, giving rise to a cycloid-helix admixture that evolves towards a distorted helix (zero cycloidal component) for fields great than $\approx$ 2 T. We propose a mechanism for the previously reported ferroelectric switching based on coupled structural and magnetic chiralities requiring only an imbalance of structural chiral domains.

From one- to two-magnon excitations in the S=3/2 magnet $β$-CaCr$_2$O$_4$

We apply neutron spectroscopy to measure the magnetic dynamics in the S=3/2 magnet $β$-CaCr$_2$O$_4$ (T$_N$=21 K). The low-energy fluctuations, in the ordered state, resemble large-S linear spin-waves from the incommensurate ground state. However, at higher energy transfers, these semi-classical and harmonic dynamics are replaced by an energy and momentum broadened continuum of excitations. Applying kinematic constraints required for energy and momentum conservation, sum rules of neutron scattering, and comparison against exact diagonalization calculations, we show that the dynamics at high-energy transfers resemble low-S one-dimensional quantum fluctuations. $β$-CaCr$_2$O$_4$ represents an example of a magnet at the border between classical Néel and quantum phases, displaying dual characteristics.

Imitation of spin density wave order in Cu$_3$Nb$_2$O$_8$

Spin density waves, based on modulated local moments, are usually associated with metallic materials, but have recently been reported in insulators which display coupled magnetic and structural order parameters. We discuss one such example, the multiferroic Cu$_3$Nb$_2$O$_8$, which is reported to undergo two magnetic phase transitions, first to a spin density wave phase at $T_N \approx 26.5K$, and then to a helicoidal structure coupled to an electric polarization below $T_2 \approx 24K$ [R. D. Johnson, et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., 107, 137205 (2011)] which breaks the crystallographic inversion symmetry. We apply spherical polarimetry to confirm the low-temperature magnetic structure, yet only observe a single magnetic phase transition to helicoidal order. We argue that the reported spin density wave originates from a decoupling of the components of the magnetic order parameter, as allowed by symmetry and driven by thermal fluctuations. This provides a mechanism for the magnetic, but not nuclear, structure to break inversion symmetry thereby creating an intermediate phase where the structure imitates a spin density wave. As the temperature is reduced, this intermediate structure destabilizes the crystal such that a structural chirality is induced, as reflected by the emergence of the electric polarization, and the imitation spin density wave relaxes into a generic helicoid. This provides a situation where the magnetic structure breaks inversion symmetry while the crystal structure remains centrosymmetric.

Non-linear soliton confinement in weakly coupled antiferromagnetic spin chains

We analyze the low-energy dynamics of quasi one dimensional, large-$S$ quantum antiferromagnets with easy-axis anisotropy, using a semi-classical non-linear sigma model. The saddle point approximation leads to a sine Gordon equation which supports soliton solutions. These correspond to the movement of spatially extended domain walls. Long-range magnetic order is a consequence of a weak inter-chain coupling. Below the ordering temperature, the coupling to nearby chains leads to an energy cost associated with the separation of two domain walls. From the kink-antikink two-soliton solution, we compute the effective confinement potential. At distances large compared to the size of the solitons the potential is linear, as expected for point-like domain walls. At small distances the gradual annihilation of the solitons weakens the effective attraction and renders the potential quadratic. From numerically solving the effective one dimensional Schröedinger equation with this non-linear confinement potential we compute the soliton bound state spectrum. We apply the theory to CaFe$_{2}$O$_{4}$, an anisotropic $S=5/2$ magnet based upon antiferromagnetic zig-zag chains. Using inelastic neutron scattering, we are able to resolve seven discrete energy levels for spectra recorded slightly below the Néel temperature $T_\textrm{N}\approx 200$~K. These modes are well described by our non-linear confinement model in the regime of large spatially extended solitons.

Spectroscopic and first principle DFT+eDMFT study of complex structural, electronic, and vibrational properties of $M_2$Mo$_3$O$_8$ ($M$=Fe, Mn) polar magnets

Optical spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction measurements, density functional theory (DFT) and density functional theory + embedded dynamical mean field theory (DFT+eDMFT) have been used to characterize structural and electronic properties of hexagonal $M_2$Mo$_3$O$_8$ ($M$=Fe, Mn) polar magnets. Our experimental data are consistent with the room temperature structure belonging to the space group P6$_3$mc for both compounds. The experimental structural and electronic properties at room temperature are well reproduced within DFT+eDMFT method, thus establishing its predictive power in the paramagnetic phase. With decreasing temperature, both compounds undergo a magnetic phase transition and we argue that this transition is concurrent with a structural phase transition (symmetry change from P6$_3$mc) in the Fe compound and an isostructural transition (no symmetry change from P6$_3$mc) in the Mn compound. In addition, the unusual temperature dependent behavior of electronic d-d transitions in Fe$^{2+}$ ions is discussed.

Directly probing spin dynamics in insulating antiferromagnets using ultrashort terahertz pulses

We investigate spin dynamics in the antiferromagnetic (AFM) multiferroic TbMnO3 using optical- pump, terahertz (THz)-probe spectroscopy. Photoexcitation results in a broadband THz transmission change, with an onset time of 25 ps at 6 K that becomes faster at higher temperatures. We attribute this time constant to spin-lattice thermalization. The excellent agreement between our measurements and previous ultrafast resonant x-ray diffraction measurements on the same material confirms that our THz pulse directly probes spin order. We suggest that this could be the case in general for insulating AFM materials, if the origin of the static absorption in the THz spectral range is magnetic.

Domain Topology and Domain Switching Kinetics in a Hybrid Improper Ferroelectric

Charged polar interfaces such as charged ferroelectric domain walls or heterostructured interfaces of ZnO/(Zn,Mg)O and LaAlO3/SrTiO3, across which the normal component of electric polarization changes suddenly, can host large two-dimensional conduction. Charged ferroelectric walls, which are energetically unfavorable in general, were found to be mysteriously abundant in hybrid improper ferroelectric (Ca,Sr)3Ti2O7 crystals. From the exploration of antiphase boundaries in bilayer-perovskites, we discover that each of four polarization-direction states is degenerated with two antiphase domains, and these eight structural variants form a Z4xZ2 domain structure with Z3 vortices and five distinct types of domain walls, whose topology is directly relevant to the presence of abundant charged walls. We also discover a zipper-like nature of antiphase boundaries; they are the reversible creation/annihilation centers of pairs of two types of ferroelectric walls (and also Z3-vortex pairs) in 90 and 180 degree polarization switching. Our results demonstrate the unexpectedly rich nature of hybrid improper ferroelectricity.

Electronic Structure, Optical and Dielectric Spectroscopy Study of TbMnO3

Spectral ellipsometry studies of the optical functions, first observation of photoluminescence and low frequency dielectric permittivity investigations were performed in ferroelectric - multiferroic TbMnO3 single crystals. The main attention was paid to electronic band structure, nature of the main optical transitions and unusual behavior of the dielectric permittivity in the region of the sharp narrow temperature maximum, associated with ferroelectric phase transition. It was found that magnitude of the permittivity maximum decreases strongly with frequency, whereas position of maximum is frequency independent. Observed features of polarization response can be described satisfactorily in the frame of on the basis of the Landau-Khalatnikov theory for critical relaxation polarization

Spontaneous decays of magneto-elastic excitations in noncollinear antiferromagnet (Y,Lu)MnO3

When magnons and phonons, the fundamental quasiparticles of the solid, are coupled to one another, they form a new hybrid quasi-particle, leading to novel phenomena and interesting applications. Despite its wide-ranging importance, however, detailed experimental studies on the underlying Hamiltonian is rare for actual materials. Moreover, the anharmonicity of such magnetoelastic excitations remains largely unexplored although it is essential for a proper understanding of their diverse thermodynamic behaviour as well as intrinsic zero-temperature decay. Here we show that in noncollinear antiferromagnets, a strong magnon-phonon coupling can significantly enhance the anharmonicity, resulting in the creation of magnetoelastic excitations and their spontaneous decay. By measuring the spin waves over the full Brillouin zone and carrying out anharmonic spin wave calculations using a Hamiltonian with an explicit magnon-phonon coupling, we have identified a hybrid magnetoelastic mode in (Y,Lu)MnO3 and quantified its decay rate and the exchange-striction coupling term required to produce it. Our work has wide implications for understanding of the spin-phonon coupling and the resulting excitations of the broad classes of noncollinear magnets.

Ambipolar Transport and Magneto-resistance Crossover in a Mott Insulator, Sr$_{2}$IrO$_{4}$

Electric field effect (EFE) controlled magnetoelectric transport in thin films of undoped and La-doped Sr$_{2}$IrO$_{4}$ (SIO) were investigated under the action of ionic liquid gating. Despite large carrier density modulation, the temperature dependent resistance measurements exhibit insulating behavior in chemically and EFE doped samples with the band filling up to 10\%. The ambipolar transport across the Mott gap is demonstrated by EFE tuning of the activation energy. Further, we observe a crossover from a negative magnetoresistance (MR) at high temperatures to positive MR at low temperatures. The crossover temperature was around $\sim$80-90 K, irrespective of the filling. This temperature and magnetic field dependent crossover is qualitatively associated with a change in the conduction mechanism from Mott to Coulomb gap mediated variable range hopping (VRH). This explains the origin of robust insulating ground state of SIO in electrical transport studies and highlights the importance of disorder and Coulombic interaction on electrical properties of SIO.

High-resolution structure studies and magnetoelectric coupling of relaxor multiferroic Pb(Fe$_{0.5}$Nb$_{0.5}$)O$_3$

Pb(Fe$_{0.5}$Nb$_{0.5}$)O$_3$ (PFN), one of the few relaxor multiferroic systems, has a $G$-type antiferromagnetic transition at $T_N$ = 143 K and a ferroelectric transition at $T_C$ = 385 K. By using high-resolution neutron-diffraction experiments and a total scattering technique, we paint a comprehensive picture of the long- and short-range structures of PFN: (i) a clear sign of short-range structural correlation above $T_C$, (ii) no sign of the negative thermal expansion behavior reported in a previous study, and (iii) clearest evidence thus far of magnetoelectric coupling below $T_N$. We conclude that at the heart of the unusual relaxor multiferroic behavior lies the disorder between Fe$^{3+}$ and Nb$^{5+}$ atoms. We argue that this disorder gives rise to short-range structural correlations arising from O disorder in addition to Pb displacement.

Spin waves and revised crystal structure of honeycomb iridate Na2IrO3

We report inelastic neutron scattering measurements on Na2IrO3, a candidate for the Kitaev spin model on the honeycomb lattice. We observe spin-wave excitations below 5 meV with a dispersion that can be accounted for by including substantial further-neighbor exchanges that stabilize zig-zag magnetic order. The onset of long-range magnetic order below 15.3 K is confirmed via the observation of oscillations in zero-field muon-spin rotation experiments. Combining single-crystal diffraction and density functional calculations we propose a revised crystal structure model with significant departures from the ideal 90 deg Ir-O-Ir bonds required for dominant Kitaev exchange.

Successive magnetic field-induced transitions and colossal magnetoelectric effect in Ni$_{3}$TeO$_{6}$

We report the discovery of a metamagnetic phase transition in a polar antiferromagnet Ni$_3$TeO$_6$ that occurs at 52 T. The new phase transition accompanies a colossal magnetoelectric effect, with a magnetic-field-induced polarization change of 0.3 $μ$C/cm$^2$, a value that is 4 times larger than for the spin-flop transition at 9 T in the same material, and also comparable to the largest magnetically-induced polarization changes observed to date. Via density-functional calculations we construct a full microscopic model that describes the data. We model the spin structures in all fields and clarify the physics behind the 52 T transition. The high-field transition involves a competition between multiple different exchange interactions which drives the polarization change through the exchange-striction mechanism. The resultant spin structure is rather counter-intuitive and complex, thus providing new insights on design principles for materials with strong magnetoelectric coupling.

Dimerization-Induced Fermi-Surface Reconstruction in IrTe2

We report a de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillation study on IrTe2 single crystals showing complex dimer formations. By comparing the angle dependence of dHvA oscillations with band structure calculations, we show distinct Fermi surface reconstruction induced by a 1/5-type and a 1/8-type dimerizations. This verifies that an intriguing quasi-two-dimensional conducting plane across the layers is induced by dimerization in both cases. A phase transition to the 1/8 phase with higher dimer density reveals that local instabilities associated with intra- and interdimer couplings are the main driving force for complex dimer formations in IrTe2.

Multiferroicity with coexisting isotropic and anisotropic spins in Ca$_{3}$Co$_{2-x}$Mn$_{x}$O$_{6}$

We study magnetic and multiferroic behavior in Ca$_3$Co$_{2-x}$Mn$_{x}$O$_6$ ($x \sim$0.97) by high-field measurements of magnetization ($M$), magnetostriction ($L$($H$)/$L$), electric polarization ($P$), and magnetocaloric effect. This study also gives insight into the zero and low magnetic field magnetic structure and magnetoelectric coupling mechanisms. We measured $M$ and $Δ$$L$/$L$ up to pulsed magnetic fields of 92 T, and determined the saturation moment and field. On the controversial topic of the spin states of Co$^{2+}$ and Mn$^{4+}$ ions, we find evidence for $S$ = 3/2 spins for both ions with no magnetic field-induced spin-state crossovers. Our data also indicate that Mn$^{4+}$ spins are quasi-isotropic and develop components in the $ab$-plane in applied magnetic fields of 10 T. These spins cant until saturation at 85 T whereas the Ising Co$^{2+}$ spins saturate by 25 T. Furthermore, our results imply that mechanism for suppression of electric polarization with magnetic fields near 10 T is flopping of the Mn$^{4+}$ spins into the $ab$-plane, indicating that appropriate models must include the coexistence of Ising and quasi-isotropic spins.

Pressure Dependent Structural Changes and Predicted Electrical Polarization in Perovskite RMnO3

High pressure x-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements on RMnO3 (R=Dy, Ho and Lu) reveals that varying structural changes occurs for different R ions. Large lattice changes (orthorhombic strain) occur in DyMnO3 and HoMnO3 while the Jahn-Teller (JT) distortion remains stable. On the other hand, in LuMnO3, Mn-O bond distortions are observed in the region 4-8 GPa with the broad minimum in the JT distortion. High pressure IR measurements indicate that a phonon near 390 cm-1 corresponding to the complex motion of the Mn and O ions changes anomalously for LuMnO3. It softens in the 4-8 GPa region, which is consistent with the structural change in Mn-O bonds and then hardens at high pressures. By contrast, the phonons continuously harden with increasing pressure for DyMnO3 and HoMnO3. DFT calculations show that the E-phase LuMnO3 is the most stable phase up to the 10 GPa pressure examined. Simulations indicate that the distinct structural change under pressure in LuMnO3 can possibly be used to optimize the electric polarization by pressure/strain.

Anionic depolymerization transition in IrTe2

Selenium (Se) substitution drastically increases the transition temperature of iridium ditelluride (IrTe$_{2}$) to a diamagnetic superstructure from 278 K to 560 K. Transmission electron microscopy experiments revealed that this enhancement is accompanied by the evolution of non-sinusoidal structure modulations from $q = 1/5(10\bar{1})$- to $q = 1/6(10\bar{1})$-types. These comprehensive results are consistent with the concept of the destabilization of polymeric Te-Te bonds at the transition, the temperature of which is increased by chemical and hydrostatic pressure and by the substitution of Te with the more electronegative Se. This temperature-induced depolymerization transition in IrTe$_{2}$ is unique in crystalline inorganic solids.

Dimerization-Induced Cross-Layer Quasi-Two-Dimensionality in Metallic Iridate IrTe2

The crystal structure of layered metal IrTe2 is determined using single-crystal x-ray diffraction. At T=220 K, it exhibits Ir and Te dimers forming a valence-bond crystal. Electronic structure calculations reveal an intriguing quasi-two-dimensional electronic state, with planes of reduced density of states cutting diagonally through the Ir and Te layers. These planes are formed by the Ir and Te dimers, which exhibit a signature of covalent bonding character development. Evidence for significant charge disproportionation among the dimerized and non-dimerized Ir (charge order) is also presented.

Evolution of the domain topology in a ferroelectric

Topological materials, including topological insulators, magnets with Skyrmions and ferroelectrics with topological vortices, have recently attracted phenomenal attention in the materials science community. Complex patterns of ferroelectric domains in hexagonal REMnO3 (RE: rare earths) turn out to be associated with the macroscopic emergence of Z2xZ3 symmetry. The results of our depth profiling of crystals with a self-poling tendency near surfaces reveal that the partial dislocation (i.e., wall-wall) interaction, not the interaction between vortices and antivortices, is primarily responsible for topological condensation through the macroscopic breaking of the Z2-symmetry.

Identification of coherent lattice modulations coupled to charge and orbital order in a manganite

We apply grazing-incidence femtosecond x-ray diffraction to investigate the details of the atomic motion connected with a displacively excited coherent optical phonon. We concentrate on the low frequency phonon associated with the charge and orbital order in the mixed valence manganite La0.25Pr0.375Ca0.375MnO3 for T < 210 K. We measure the response of three superlattice reflections that feature different sensitivities to the motion of the unit cell constituents. The results support the assignment to a translational mode of the Mn4+ atoms together with the oxygen atoms connecting adjacent Mn4+ sites.

Is hexagonal InMnO3 ferroelectric?

The presence of ferroelectricity in hexagonal (h-)InMnO3 has been highly under debate. The results of our comprehensive experiments of low-temperature (T) polarization, TEM and HAADF-STEM on well-controlled h-InMnO3 reveal that the ground state is ferroelectric with P6_3cm symmetry, but a non-ferroelectric P-3c1 state exists at high T, and can be quenched to room T. We also found that the ferroelectric P6_3cm state of h-InMnO3 exhibits the domain configuration of topological vortices, as has been observed in h-REMnO3 (RE=rare earths).

Magnetic fan structures in Ba$_{0.5}$Sr$_{1.5}$Zn$_2$Fe$_{12}$O$_{22}$ hexaferrite revealed by resonant soft X-ray diffraction

The hexaferrites are known to exhibit a wide range of magnetic structures, some of which are connected to important technological applications and display magnetoelectric properties. We present data on the low field magnetic structures stabilised in a Y-type hexaferrite as observed by resonant soft X-ray diffraction. The helical spin block arrangement that is present in zero applied magnetic field becomes fan-like as a field is applied in plane. The propagation vectors associated with each fan structure are studied as a function of field, and a new magnetic phase is reported. Mean field calculations indicate this phase should stabilise close to the boundary of the previously reported phases.

Terahertz spectroscopy of spin waves in multiferroic BiFeO$_3$ in high magnetic fields

We have studied the magnetic field dependence of far-infrared active magnetic modes in a single ferroelectric domain \BFO/ crystal at low temperature. The modes soften close to the critical field of 18.8\,T along the [001] (pseudocubic) axis, where the cycloidal structure changes to the homogeneous canted antiferromagnetic state and a new strong mode with linear field dependence appears that persists at least up to 31\,T. A microscopic model that includes two \DM/ interactions and easy-axis anisotropy describes closely both the zero-field spectroscopic modes as well as their splitting and evolution in a magnetic field. The good agreement of theory with experiment suggests that the proposed model provides the foundation for future technological applications of this multiferroic material.

Coexisting order and disorder hidden in a quasi-two-dimensional frustrated magnet

Frustrated magnetic interactions in a quasi-two-dimensional [111] slab of pyrochlore lattice were studied. For uniform nearest neighbor (NN) interactions, we show that the complex magnetic problem can be mapped onto a model with two independent degrees of freedom, tri-color and binary sign. This provides a systematic way to construct the complex classical spin ground states with collinear and coplanar bi-pyramid spins. We also identify `partial but extended' zero-energy excitations amongst the ground states. For nonuniform NN interactions, the coplanar ground state can be obtained from the collinear bi-pyramid spin state by collectively rotating two spins of each tetrahedron with an angle, $α$, in an opposite direction. The latter model with $α\sim 30^\circ$ fits the experimental neutron data from SCGO well.

Direct observation of the proliferation of ferroelectric loop domains and vortex-antivortex pairs

We discovered "stripe" patterns of trimerization-ferroelectric domains in hexagonal REMnO3 (RE=Ho, ---, Lu) crystals (grown below ferroelectric transition temperatures (Tc), reaching up to 1435 oC), in contrast with the vortex patterns in YMnO3. These stripe patterns roughen with the appearance of numerous loop domains through thermal annealing just below Tc, but the stripe domain patterns turn to vortex-antivortex domain patterns through a freezing process when crystals cross Tc even though the phase transition appears not to be Kosterlitz-Thouless-type. The experimental systematics are compared with the results of our six-state clock model simulation and also the Kibble-Zurek Mechanism for trapped topological defects.

Magnons and crystal field transitions in hexagonal REMnO3 (RE = Er, Tm, Yb, Lu) single crystals

Far-infrared optical transmission spectra of the antiferromagnetic resonances, or magnons, and crystal field transitions have been studied in hexagonal REMnO3 (RE = Er, Tm, Yb, Lu) single crystals. The magnon and CF frequencies, their oscillator strengths, and effective g-factors have been measured using external magnetic fields up to 9 T in the temperature range between 1.5 K and 100 K. The magnon frequency increases systematically with a decrease of the RE ion radius. The magnetic ordering of RE ions (RE=Er, Tm, Yb) was observed at low temperatures T<3.5 K and in strong external magnetic fields. The observed effects are analyzed taking into account main magnetic interactions in the system including exchange of the Mn3+ spins with RE3+ paramagnetic moments.

Ultrafast carrier dynamics and radiative recombination in multiferroic BiFeO$_{3}$

We report a comprehensive study of ultrafast carrier dynamics in single crystals of multiferroic BiFeO$_{3}$. Using femtosecond optical pump-probe spectroscopy, we find that the photoexcited electrons relax to the conduction band minimum through electron-phonon coupling with a $\sim$1 picosecond time constant that does not significantly change across the antiferromagnetic transition. Photoexcited electrons subsequently leave the conduction band and primarily decay via radiative recombination, which is supported by photoluminescence measurements. We find that despite the coexisting ferroelectric and antiferromagnetic orders in BiFeO$_{3}$, the intrinsic nature of this charge-transfer insulator results in carrier relaxation similar to that observed in bulk semiconductors.

Conduction of topologically-protected charged ferroelectric domain walls

We report on the observation of nanoscale conduction at ferroelectric domain walls in hexagonal HoMnO3 protected by the topology of multiferroic vortices using in situ conductive atomic force microscopy, piezoresponse force microscopy, and kelvin-probe force microscopy at low temperatures. In addition to previously observed Schottky-like rectification at low bias [Phys. Rev. Lett., 104, 217601 (2010)], conductance spectra reveal that negatively charged tail-to-tail walls exhibit enhanced conduction at high forward bias, while positively charged head-to-head walls exhibit suppressed conduction at high reverse bias. Our results pave the way for understanding the semiconducting properties of the domains and domain walls in small-gap ferroelectrics.

High Pressure Structural Stability of Multiferroic Hexagonal REMnO3

Structural changes in REMnO3 (RE= Y, Ho, Lu) under high pressure were examined by synchrotron x-ray diffraction methods at room temperature. Compression occurs more readily in the ab plane than along the c-axis. Under hydrostatic pressure (~11 GPa), the atoms hold their approximate ambient fractional positions in the unit cell and the spontaneous polarization shows no significant change. With increased pressure, a pressure-induced hexagonal to orthorhombic phase transition was observed starting at ~ 22GPa for Lu(Y)MnO3. A small volume fraction of Lu(Y)MnO3 is converted to the orthorhombic phase when the pressure is increased to 35 GPa and the orthorhombic phase is maintained on pressure release. High pressure IR absorption spectroscopy and Mn K-edge near edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy confirm that the hexagonal P63cm structure is stable below ~20 GPa and the environment around Mn ion is not changed. Shifts in the unoccupied p-band density of states with pressure are observed in the Mn K-Edge spectra. A schematic pressure-temperature phase diagram is given for the small ion REMnO3 system.

Independent ferroelectric contributions and rare-earth-induced polarization reversal in multiferroic TbMn2O5

Three independent contributions to the magnetically induced spontaneous polarization of multiferroic TbMn2O5 are uniquely separated by optical second harmonic generation and an analysis in terms of Landau theory. Two of them are related to the magnetic Mn3+/4+ order and are independent of applied fields of up to 7 T. The third contribution is related to the long-range antiferromagnetic Tb3+ order. It shows a drastic decrease upon the application of a magnetic field and mediates the change of sign of the spontaneous electric polarization in TbMn2O5. The close relationship between the rare-earth long-range order and the non-linear optical properties points to isotropic Tb-Tb exchange and oxygen spin polarization as mechanism for this rare-earth induced ferroelectricity.

Long wavelength magnetic and magnetoelectric excitations in the ferroelectric antiferromagnet BiFeO3

We present a terahertz spectroscopic study of magnetic excitations in ferroelectric antiferromagnet BiFeO3. We interpret the observed spectrum of long-wavelength magnetic resonance modes in terms of the normal modes of the material's cycloidal antiferromagnetic structure. We find that the modulated Dzyaloshinski-Moriya interaction leads to a splitting of the out-of-plane resonance modes. We also assign one of the observed absorption lines to an electromagnon excitation that results from the magnetoelectric coupling between the ferroelectric polarization and the cycloidal magnetic structure of BiFeO3.

Magnetic excitations in the low-temperature ferroelectric phase of multiferroic YMn2O5 using inelastic neutron scattering

We studied magnetic excitations in a low-temperature ferroelectric phase of the multiferroic YMn2O5 using inelastic neutron scattering (INS). We identify low-energy magnon modes and establish a correspondence between the magnon peaks observed by INS and electromagnon peaks observed in optical absorption [1]. Furthermore, we explain the microscopic mechanism, which results in the lowest-energy electromagnon peak, by comparing the inelastic neutron spectral weight with the polarization in the commensurate ferroelectric phase.

Measurements and ab initio Molecular Dynamics Simulations of the High Temperature Ferroelectric Transition in Hexagonal RMnO3

Measurements of the structure of hexagonal RMnO3 (R=rare earths (Ho) and Y) for temperatures significantly above the ferroelectric transition temperature (TFE) were conducted to determine the nature of the transition. The local and long range structural measurements were complemented by ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. With respect to the Mn sites in YMnO3 and HoMnO3, we find no large atomic (bond distances or thermal factors), electronic structure changes or rehybridization on crossing TFE from local structural methods. The local symmetry about the Mn sites is preserved. With respect to the local structure about the Ho sites, a reduction of the average Ho-O bond with increased temperature is found. Ab initio molecular dynamics calculations on HoMnO3 reveal the detailed motions of all ions. Above ~900 K there are large displacements of the Ho, O3 and O4 ions along the z-axis which reduce the buckling of the MnO3/O4 planes. The changes result in O3/O4 ions moving to towards central points between pairs of Ho ions on the z-axis. These structural changes make the coordination of Ho sites more symmetric thus extinguishing the electric polarization. At significantly higher temperatures, rotation of the MnO5 polyhedra occurs without a significant change in electric polarization. The born effective charge tensor is found to be highly anisotropic at the O sites but does not change appreciably at high temperatures.

Strong magnetoelastic effect on the magnetoelectric phenomena of TbMn$_{2}$O$_{5}$

Comparative studies of magnetoelectric susceptibility ($α$), magnetization ($M$), and magnetostriction ($u$) in TbMn$_{2}$O$_{5}$ reveal that the increment of $M$ owing to the field-induced Tb$^{3+}$ spin alignment coins a field-asymmetric line shape in the $α(H)$ curve, being conspicuous in a low temperature incommensurate phase but persistently subsisting in the entire ferroelectric phase. Correlations among electric polarization, $u$, and $M^{2}$ variation represent linear relationships, unambiguously showing the significant role of Tb magnetoelastic effects on the low field magnetoelectric phenomena of TbMn$_{2}$O$_{5}$. An effective free energy capturing the observed experimental features is also suggested.

The spin state of Co(2+) remains unresolved, due to a discrepancy between high temperature X-ray absorption (S=3/2) and low temperature neutron (S=1/2) measurements. Using a combination of magnetic modeling and crystal-field analysis, we show that the existing low temperature data cannot be reconciled within a high spin scenario by invoking spin-orbit or Jahn-Teller distortions. To unify the experimental results, we propose a spin-state crossover with specific experimental predictions.

Helical spin-waves, magnetic order, and fluctuations in the langasite compound Ba3NbFe3Si2O14

We have investigated the spin fluctuations in the langasite compound Ba3NbFe3Si2O14 in both the ordered state and as a function of temperature. The low temperature magnetic structure is defined by a spiral phase characterized by magnetic Bragg peaks at q=(0,0,tau ~ 1/7) onset at TN=27 K as previously reported by Marty et al. The nature of the fluctuations and temperature dependence of the order parameter is consistent with a classical second order phase transition for a two dimensional triangular antiferromagnet. We will show that the physical properties and energy scales including the ordering wavevector, Curie-Weiss temperature, and the spin-waves can be explained through the use of only symmetric exchange constants without the need for the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. This is accomplished through a set of ``helical" exchange pathways along the c direction imposed by the chiral crystal structure and naturally explains the magnetic diffuse scattering which displays a strong vector chirality up to high temperatures well above the ordering temperature. This illustrates a strong coupling between magnetic and crystalline chirality in this compound.

Observation of Anomalous Phonons in E-Type Orthorhombic REMnO3

We observe the appearance of a phonon near the lock-in temperature in orthorhombic REMnO3 (RE: Lu and Ho) and anomalous phonon hardening in orthorhombic LuMnO3. The anomalous phonon occurs at the onset of spontaneous polarization. No such changes were found in incommensurate orthorhombic DyMnO3. These observations directly reveal different electric polarization mechanisms in the E-type and IC-type REMnO3.

Magnetic excitations and optical transitions in the multiferroic spin-1/2 system LiCu$_2$O$_2$

Magnetic excitations in cycloidal magnet LiCu$_2$O$_2$ are explored using THz absorption spectroscopy in magnetic fields up to 12 T. Below the spin ordering temperature we observe eight optically active transitions in the spin system of LiCu$_2$O$_2$ in the energy range from 4 to 30 cm$^{-1}$. In magnetic field the number of modes increases and the electric polarization flop is seen as a change in magnetic field dependence of mode energies. The polarization dependence of two of the modes in zero magnetic field fits the selection rules for the cycloid tilted by $θ=41\pm1^{\circ}$ from the bc plane. For the remaining six modes electric and magnetic dipole approximations cannot explain the observed polarization dependence. We do not see the electromagnon in the explored energy range although there is evidence that it could exist below 4 cm$^{-1}$.

Spin-Coupled Local Distortions in Multiferroic Hexagonal HoMnO3

Local structural measurements have been performed on hexagonal HoMnO3 in order to ascertain the specific changes in bond distances which accompany magnetic ordering transitions. The transition from paramagnetic to the antiferromagetic (noncollinear) phase near ~70 K is dominated by changes in the a-b plane Mn-Mn bond distances. The spin rotation transition near ~40 K involves both Mn-Mn and nearest neighbor Ho-Mn interactions while the low temperature transition below 10 K involves all interactions, Mn-Mn, Ho-Mn (nearest and next nearest) and Ho-Ho correlations. These changes in bond distances reveal strong spin-lattice coupling. The similarity in magnitude of the change in J(Mn-Mn) and J(Ho-Mn) enhances the system frustration. The structural changes are interpreted in terms of a model of competing spin order and local structural distortions. Density functional calculations are used to estimate the energies associated with ionic displacements. The calculations also reveal asymmetric polarization of the charge density of Ho, O3 and O4 sites along the z-axis in the ferroelectric phase. This polarization facilitates coupling between Ho atoms on neighboring planes normal to the z-axis.

Giant Magnetoelectric Effect in a Multiferroic Material with a High Ferroelectric Transition Temperature

We present a unique example of giant magnetoelectric effect in a conventional multiferroic HoMnO3, where polarization is very large (~56 mC/m2) and the ferroelectric transition temperature is higher than the magnetic ordering temperature by an order. We attribute the uniqueness of the giant magnetoelectric effect to the ferroelectricity induced entirely by the off-center displacement of rare earth ions with large magnetic moments. This finding suggests a new avenue to design multiferroics with large polarization and higher ferroelectric transition temperature as well as large magnetoelectric effects.

From Cooperative Paramagnet to Néel Order in Y_2Ru_2O_7

Spin correlations in the pyrochlore antiferromagnet Y_2Ru_2O_7 with Curie-Weiss temperature $Θ_{CW}=-1100$ K and critical temperature T_N=77 K were examined through neutron scattering. For $T_N<T<Θ_{CW}/3$ the data show spin relaxation with a rate $\hbarΓ= 1.17(9)k_BT$. For T<T_N spectral weight moves to higher energies with substantial changes up to $4\times k_BT_N$. For T<<T_N there is a $Δ=11(1)$ meV energy gap and a pronounced spectral maximum at 19.7 meV. Throughout the temperature range examined the wave vector dependence of inelastic scattering exhibits a broad peak for $Qd\approx 3.8$ (d is Ru-Ru spacing) consistent with dipolar spin correlations.

Inhomogeneous level splitting in Pr$_{2-x}$Bi$_x$Ru$_2$O$_7$

We report that Bi doping drives Pr$_x$Bi$_{2-x}$Ru$_2$O$_7$ from an antiferromagnetic insulator ($x=2$) to a metallic paramagnet ($x\approx 1$) with a broad low $T$ maximum in $C/T$. Neutron scattering reveals local low energy spin excitations ($\hbarω\approx 1$ meV) with a spectrum that is unaffected by heating to $k_BT>>\hbarω$. We show that a continuous distribution of splittings of the non-Kramers Pr$^{3+}$ ground state doublet such as might result from various types of lattice strain can account for all the data.

First-order transition in the itinerant ferromagnet CoS$_{1.9}$Se$_{0.1}$

Undoped CoS$_2$ is an isotropic itinerant ferromagnet with a continuous or nearly continuous phase transition at $T_{\rm C} = 122$ K. In the doped CoS$_{1.9}$Se$_{0.1}$ system, the Curie temperature is lowered to $T_{\rm C} = 90$ K, and the transition becomes clearly first order in nature. In particular we find a discontinuous evolution of the spin dynamics as well as strong time relaxation in the ferromagnetic Bragg intensity and small angle neutron scattering in vicinity of the ferromagnetic transition. In the ordered state the long-wavelength spin excitations were found to be conventional ferromagnetic spin-waves with negligible spin-wave gap ($ < 0.04$ meV), indicating that this system is also an excellent isotropic (soft) ferromagnet. In a wide temperature range up to $0.9T_{\rm C}$, the spin-wave stiffness $D(T)$ follows the prediction of the two-magnon interaction theory, $D(T) = D(0)(1 - AT^{5/2})$, with $D(0) = 131.7 \pm 2.8$ meV-Å$^{2}$. The stiffness, however, does not collapse as $T \to T_{\rm C}$ from below. Instead a quasielastic central peak abruptly develops in the excitation spectrum, quite similar to results found in the colossal magnetoresistance oxides such as (La-Ca)MnO$_3$.

Magnetic relaxation in La0.250Pr0.375Ca0.375MnO3 with varying phase separation

We have studied the magnetic relaxation properties of the phase-separated manganite compound La0.250Pr0.375Ca0.375MnO3 . A series of polycrystalline samples was prepared with different sintering temperatures, resulting in a continuous variation of phase fraction between metallic (ferromagnetic) and charge-ordered phases at low temperatures. Measurements of the magnetic viscosity show a temperature and field dependence which can be correlated to the static properties. Common to all the samples, there appears to be two types of relaxation processes - at low fields associated with the reorientation of ferromagnetic domains and at higher fields associated with the transformation between ferromagnetic and non-ferromagnetic phases.

Observation of magnetic order in La_{1.9}Sr_{0.1}CuO_{4} from two-magnon Raman scattering

We reported two-magnon Raman scattering from La_{1.9}Sr_{0.1}CuO_4, which has a suppressed Tc=12 K, as the temperature is lowered below 37 K and an ordered spin phase is formed. The two-magnon Raman intensity increases with decreasing temperature. The magnetic scattering in La_{1.9}Sr_{0.1}CuO_4 is totally different from that reported in the parent compound La_2CuO_4. We analyze the line shape of the two-magnon scattering within the traditional Loudon-Fleury theory and find the superexchange constant J=1052 cm^{-1}. The calculation of the frequency moment suggests that the quantum fluctuations are very weak in the system. The room temperature Raman scattering from La_2CuO_4 is also measured. Strong features appear in the one-phonon spectrum at the frequencies of the longitudinal optical (LO) infrared modes which we suggest become Raman active through a Fröhlich-interaction.
