A structural evaluation of the tungsten isotopes via thermal neutron capture

Total radiative thermal neutron-capture γγ-ray cross sections for the 182,183,184,186^{182,183,184,186}W isotopes were measured using guided neutron beams from the Budapest Research Reactor to induce prompt and delayed γγ rays from elemental and isotopically-enriched tungsten targets. These cross sections were determined from the sum of measured γγ-ray cross sections feeding the ground state from low-lying levels below a cutoff energy, Ecrit_{\rm crit}, where the level scheme is completely known, and continuum γγ rays from levels above Ecrit_{\rm crit}, calculated using the Monte Carlo statistical-decay code DICEBOX. The new cross sections determined in this work for the tungsten nuclides are: σ0(182W)=20.5(14)σ_{0}(^{182}{\rm W}) = 20.5(14) b and σ11/2+(183Wm,5.2s)=0.177(18)σ_{11/2^{+}}(^{183}{\rm W}^{m}, 5.2 {\rm s}) = 0.177(18) b; σ0(183W)=9.37(38)σ_{0}(^{183}{\rm W}) = 9.37(38) b and σ5−(184Wm,8.33μs)=0.0247(55)σ_{5^{-}}(^{184}{\rm W}^{m}, 8.33 μ{\rm s}) = 0.0247(55) b; σ0(184W)=1.43(10)σ_{0}(^{184}{\rm W}) = 1.43(10) b and σ11/2+(185Wm,1.67min)=0.0062(16)σ_{11/2^{+}}(^{185}{\rm W}^{m}, 1.67 {\rm min}) = 0.0062(16) b; and, σ0(186W)=33.33(62)σ_{0}(^{186}{\rm W}) = 33.33(62) b and σ9/2+(187Wm,1.38μs)=0.400(16)σ_{9/2^{+}}(^{187}{\rm W}^{m}, 1.38 μ{\rm s}) = 0.400(16) b. These results are consistent with earlier measurements in the literature. The 186^{186}W cross section was also independently confirmed from an activation measurement, following the decay of 187^{187}W, yielding values for σ0(186W)σ_{0}(^{186}{\rm W}) that are consistent with our prompt γγ-ray measurement. The cross-section measurements were found to be insensitive to choice of level density or photon strength model, and only weakly dependent on Ecrit_{\rm crit}. Total radiative-capture widths calculated with DICEBOX showed much greater model dependence, however, the recommended values could be reproduced with selected model choices. The decay schemes for all tungsten isotopes were improved in these analyses.

Extracting (n,g) direct capture cross sections from Coulomb dissociation: application to 14^{14}C(n,γγ)15^{15}C

A methodology for extracting neutron direct capture rates from Coulomb dissociation data is developed and applied to the Coulomb dissociation of 15C on 208Pb at 68 MeV/nucleon. Full Continuum Discretized Coupled Channel calculations are performed and an asymptotic normalization coefficient is determined from a fit to the breakup data. Direct neutron capture calculations using the extracted asymptotic normalization coefficient provide (n,γ)(n,γ) cross sections consistent with direct measurements. Our results show that the Coulomb Dissociation data can be reliably used for extracting the cross section for 14C(n,g)15C if the appropriate reaction theory is used. The resulting error bars are of comparable magnitude to those from the direct measurement. This procedure can be used more generally to extract capture cross sections from breakup reactions whenever the desired capture process is fully peripheral.

Sensitivity of 8B breakup cross section to projectile structure in CDCC calculations

Given the Astrophysical interest of 7^7Be(p,γ)8(p,γ)^8B, there have been several experiments applying the Coulomb dissociation method for extracting the capture rate. Measurements at Michigan State are dominated by E1E1 contributions but have a small E2E2 component. On the other hand, a lower energy measurement at Notre Dame has a much stronger E2E2 contribution. The expectation was that the two measurements would tie down the E2E2 and thus allow for an accurate extraction of the E1E1 relevant for the capture process. The aim of this brief report is to show that the E2E2 factor in breakup reactions does not translate into a scaling of the E2E2 contribution in the corresponding capture reaction. We show that changes to the 8^8B single particle parameters, which are directly related to the E2E2 component in the capture reaction, do not effect the corresponding breakup reactions, using the present reaction theory.
