Coupled-channels calculations for nuclear reactions: from exotic nuclei to superheavy elements

Atomic nuclei are composite systems, and they may be dynamically excited during nuclear reactions. Such excitations are not only relevant to inelastic scattering but they also affect other reaction processes such as elastic scattering and fusion. The coupled-channels approach is a framework which can describe these reaction processes in a unified manner. It expands the total wave function of the system in terms of the ground and excited states of the colliding nuclei, and solves the coupled Shrödinger equations to obtain the $S$-matrix, from which several cross sections can be constructed. This approach has been a standard tool to analyze experimental data for nuclear reactions. In this paper, we review the present status and the recent developments of the coupled-channels approach. This includes the microscopic coupled-channels method and its application to cluster physics, the continuum discretized coupled-channels (CDCC) method for breakup reactions, the semi-microscopic approach to heavy-ion subbarrier fusion reactions, the channel coupling effects on nuclear astrophysics and syntheses of superheavy elements, and inclusive breakup and incomplete fusion reactions of weakly-bound nuclei.

Experimental investigation of ground-state properties of $^7$H with transfer reactions

The properties of nuclei with extreme neutron-to-proton ratios, far from those naturally occurring on Earth, are key to understand nuclear forces and how nucleons hold together to form nuclei. $^7$H, with six neutrons and a single proton, is the nuclear system with the most unbalanced neutron-to-proton ratio known so far. However, its sheer existence and properties are still a challenge for experimental efforts and theoretical models. Here we report experimental evidences on the formation of $^7$H as a resonance, detected with independent observables, and the first measurement of the structure of its ground state. The resonance is found at $\sim$0.7 MeV above the $^3$H+4n mass, with a narrow width of $\sim$0.2 MeV and a $1/2^+$ spin and parity. These data are consistent with a $^7$H as a $^3$H core surrounded by an extended four-neutron halo, with a unique four-neutron decay and a relatively long half-life thanks to neutron pairing; a prime example of new phenomena occurring in what would be the most pure-neutron nuclear matter we can access in the laboratory.

Study of elastic and inelastic scattering of $^7$Be + $^{12}$C at 35 MeV

The elastic and inelastic scattering of $^7$Be from $^{12}$C have been measured at an incident energy of 35 MeV. The inelastic scattering leading to the 4.439 MeV excited state of $^{12}$C has been measured for the first time. The experimental data cover an angular range of $θ_{cm}$ = 15$^{\circ}$-120$^{\circ}$. Optical model analyses were carried out with Woods-Saxon and double-folding potential using the density dependent M3Y (DDM3Y) effective interaction. The microscopic analysis of the elastic data indicates breakup channel coupling effect. A coupled-channel analysis of the inelastic scattering, based on collective form factors, show that mutual excitation of both $^7$Be and $^{12}$C is significantly smaller than the single excitation of $^{12}$C. The larger deformation length obtained from the DWBA analysis could be explained by including the excitation of $^7$Be in a coupled-channel analysis. The breakup cross section of $^7$Be is estimated to be less than 10$\%$ of the reaction cross section. The intrinsic deformation length obtained for the $^{12}$C$^*$ (4.439 MeV) state is $δ_2$ = 1.37 fm. The total reaction cross section deduced from the analysis agrees very well with Wong's calculations for similar weakly bound light nuclei on $^{12}$C target.

The Hussein-McVoy formula for inclusive breakup revisited. A Tribute to Mahir Hussein

In 1985, Hussein and McVoy [Nuc. Phys. A445 (1985) 124] elucidated a formula for the evaluation of the nonelastic breakup ("stripping") contribution in inclusive breakup reactions. The formula, based on the spectator core model, acquires a particularly simple and appealing form in the eikonal limit, to the extent that it has become the standard procedure to analyze single-nucleon knockout reactions at intermediate energies. In this contribution, a critical assessment of this formula is presented and its connection with other, noneikonal expressions discussed. Some calculations comparing the different formulae are also presented for the one-nucleon removal of $^{14}$O+$^{9}$Be reaction at several incident energies.

Breakup mechanisms in the 6He+64Zn reaction at near-barrier energies

New experimental results for the elastic scattering of 6He on 64Zn at incident energies of 15.0 and 18.0 MeV and 4He at 17.5 MeV along with results already published at 10.0 and 13.6 MeV, are presented. Elastic and alpha experimental cross sections are compared with coupled-reaction-channel, continuum-discretized coupledchannel, and DWBA inclusive-breakup models. The large yield of alpha particles observed at all measured energies can be explained by considering a nonelastic breakup mechanism.

Quenching of single-particle strength from direct reactions with stable and rare-isotope beams

In this review article we discuss the present status of direct nuclear reactions and the nuclear structure aspects one can study with them. We discuss the spectroscopic information we can assess in experiments involving transfer reactions, heavy-ion-induced knockout reactions and quasifree scattering with (p,2p), (p,pn), and (e,e'p) reactions. In particular, we focus on the proton-to-neutron asymmetry of the quenching of the spectroscopic strength.

Reaction Theory and Advanced CDCC

The Continuum-Discretized Coupled-Channels (CDCC) has been successfully employed to describe elastic and breakup of nuclear reactions induced by weakly bound projectiles. In this contribution, we review some other, less widespread applications of the CDCC wavefunction, some of them in combination with other reaction formalisms, which are being currently employed in the analysis of reactions involving three or more fragments in the initial or final state.

Evidence of strong dynamic core excitation in $^{19}$C resonant break-up

The resonant break-up of $^{19}$C on protons measured at RIKEN [Phys. Lett. B 660, 320 (2008)] is analyzed in terms of a valence-core model for $^{19}$C including possible core excitations. The analysis of the angular distribution of a prominent peak appearing in the relative-energy spectrum could be well described with this model and is consistent with the previous assignment of $5/2^{+}$ for this state. Inclusion of core-excitation effects are found to be essential to give the correct magnitude of the cross section for this state. By contrast, the calculation assuming an inert $^{18}$C core is found to largely underestimate the data.

Continuum-Discretized Coupled-Channels calculations with core excitation

The effect of core excitation in the elastic scattering and breakup of a two-body halo nucleus on a stable target nucleus is studied. The structure of the weakly-bound projectile is described in the weak-coupling limit, assuming a particle-rotor model. The eigenfunctions and the associated eigenvalues are obtained by diagonalizing this Hamiltonian in a square-integrable basis (pseudo-states). For the radial coordinate between the particle and the core, a transformed harmonic oscillator (THO) basis is used. For the reaction dynamics, an extension of the Continuum-Discretized Coupled-Channels (CDCC) method, which takes into account dynamic core excitation and deexcitation due to the presence of non-central parts in the core-target interaction, is adapted to be used along with a pseudo-states (PS) basis.

Semi-microscopic folding model for the description of two-body halo nuclei

One-neutron halo nuclei, composed by a weakly-bound particle coupled to a core nucleus, are studied within a particle-plus-core model. A semi-microscopic method to generate the two-body Hamiltonian of such a system, including core excitation, is proposed. The method consists in generating the spin-independent part of the valence-core interaction using a single-folding procedure, convoluting a realistic nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction with the core transition densities. The latter are calculated with the Antisymetrized Molecular Dynamics (AMD) method. The prescription is applied to the well known halo nucleus, $^{11}$Be, as a test case. The results show an important predictive power that opens a door to the understanding of other lesser known halo nuclei. In order to show the potential usefulness of the method, it is applied to analyze the structure of $^{19}$C.

Structure of 8B from elastic and inelastic 7Be+p scattering

Motivation: Detailed experimental knowledge of the level structure of light weakly bound nuclei is necessary to guide the development of new theoretical approaches that combine nuclear structure with reaction dynamics. Purpose: The resonant structure of 8B is studied in this work. Method: Excitation functions for elastic and inelastic 7Be+p scattering were measured using a 7Be rare isotope beam. Excitation energies ranging between 1.6 and 3.4 MeV were investigated. An R-matrix analysis of the excitation functions was performed. Results: New low-lying resonances at 1.9, 2.5, and 3.3 MeV in 8B are reported with spin-parity assignment 0+, 2+, and 1+, respectively. Comparison to the Time Dependent Continuum Shell (TDCSM) model and ab initio no-core shell model/resonating-group method (NCSM/RGM) calculations is performed. This work is a more detailed analysis of the data first published as a Rapid Communication. [J.P. Mitchell, et al, Phys. Rev. C 82, 011601(R) (2010)] Conclusions: Identification of the 0+, 2+, 1+ states that were predicted by some models at relatively low energy but never observed experimentally is an important step toward understanding the structure of 8B. Their identification was aided by having both elastic and inelastic scattering data. Direct comparison of the cross sections and phase shifts predicted by the TDCSM and ab initio No Core Shell Model coupled with the resonating group method is of particular interest and provides a good test for these theoretical approaches.

Interplay between valence and core excitation mechanisms in the breakup of halo nuclei

The phenomenon of core excitation in the breakup of a two-body halo nucleus is investigated. We show that this effect plays a significant role in the reaction dynamics and, furthermore, its interference with the valence excitation mechanism has sizable and measurable effects on the breakup angular distributions. These effects have been studied in the resonant breakup of 11Be on a carbon target, populating the resonances at 1.78 MeV (5/2+) and 3.41 MeV (3/2+). The calculations have been performed using a recently extension of the DWBA method, which takes into account the effect of core excitation in both the structure of the halo nucleus and in the reaction mechanism. The calculated angular distributions have been compared with the available data [Fukuda et al., Phys. Rev. C70,054606]. Although each of these resonances is dominated by one of the two considered mechanisms, the angular patterns of these resonances depend in a very delicate way on the interference between them. This is the first clear evidence of this effect but the phenomenon is likely to occur in other similar reactions.

Particle motion in a deformed potential using a transformed oscillator basis

The quantum description of a particle moving in a deformed potential is investigated. A pseudostate (PS) basis is used to represent the states of the composite system. This PS basis is obtained by diagonalizing the system Hamiltonian in a family of square integrable functions. In this work the Transformed Harmonic Oscillator (THO) functions, obtained from the solutions of the Harmonic Oscillator using a Local Scale Transformation (LST), are used. The proposed method is applied to the 11Be nucleus, treated in a two-body model (10Be+n). Both structure and reaction observables have been studied. Wavefunctions and energies obtained for the bound states and some low-lying resonances are compared with those obtained by direct integration of the Schroedinger equation. The dipole and quadrupole electric transition probabilities for the low-energy continuum have been calculated in the THO basis, and compared with the exact distributions obtained with the scattering states. Finally, the method is applied to describe the 11Be states in the Coulomb breakup of 11Be+208Pb at 69 MeV/nucleon. The energy and angular distributions of the exclusive breakup have been calculated using the Equivalent Photon Method, including both E1 and E2 contributions. The calculated distributions are found to be in good agreement with the available experimental data from RIKEN [Phys. Rev. C70, 054606]. At the very forward angles, the cross section is completely dominated by the dipole couplings.

Exploring continuum structures with a pseudo-state basis

The ability of a recently developed square-integrable discrete basis to represent the properties of the continuum of a two-body system is investigated. The basis is obtained performing a simple analytic local scale transformation to the harmonic oscillator basis. Scattering phase-shifts and the electric transition probabilities B(E1) and B(E2) have been evaluated for several potentials using the proposed basis. Both quantities are found to be in excellent agreement with the exact values calculated from the true scattering states. The basis has been applied to describe the projectile continuum in the 6He scattering by 12C and 208Pb targets at 240 MeV/nucleon and the 11Be scattering by 12C at 67 MeV/nucleon. The calculated breakup differential cross sections are found to be in very good agreement with the available experimental data for these reactions.

Long range effects on the optical model of 6He around the Coulomb barrier

We present an optical model (OM) analysis of the elastic scattering data of the reactions 6He+27Al and 6He+208Pb at incident energies around the Coulomb barrier. The bare part of the optical potential is constructed microscopically by means of a double folding procedure, using the Sao Paulo prescription without any renormalization. This bare interaction is supplemented with a Coulomb dipole polarization (CDP) potential, which takes into account the effect of the dipole Coulomb interaction. For this CDP potential, we use an analytical formula derived from the semiclassical theory of Coulomb excitation. The rest of the optical potential is parametrized in terms of Woods-Saxon shapes. In the 6He+208Pb case, the analysis confirms the presence of long range components, in agreement with previous works. Four-body Continuum-Discretized Coupled-Channels calculations have been performed in order to better understand the features of the optical potentials found in the OM analysis. This study searches to elucidate some aspects of the optical potential of weakly bound systems, such as the dispersion relation and the long range (attractive and absorptive) mechanisms.

Low-lying states in 8B

Excitation functions of elastic and inelastic 7Be+p scattering were measured in the energy range between 1.6 and 2.8 MeV in the c.m. An R-matrix analysis of the excitation functions provides strong evidence for new positive parity states in 8B. A new 2+ state at an excitation energy of 2.55 MeV was observed and a new 0+ state at 1.9 MeV is tentatively suggested. The R-matrix and Time Dependent Continuum Shell Model were used in the analysis of the excitation functions. The new results are compared to the calculations of contemporary theoretical models.

One dimensional scattering of a two body interacting system by an infinite wall

The one-dimensional scattering of a two body interacting system by an infinite wall is studied in a quantum-mechanical framework. This problem contains some of the dynamical features present in the collision of atomic, molecular and nuclear systems. The scattering problem is solved exactly, for the case of a harmonic interaction between the fragments. The exact result is used to assess the validity of two different approximations to the scattering process. The adiabatic approximation, which considers that the relative co-ordinate is frozen during the scattering process, is found to be inadequate for this problem. The uncorrelated scattering approximation, which neglects the correlation between the fragments, gives results in accordance with the exact calculations when the scattering energy is high compared to the oscillator parameter.

Probing nucleon-nucleon interactions in breakup of a one-neutron halo $^{11}$Be on a proton target

A comparison between full few-body Faddeev/Alt-Grassberger-Sandhas (Faddeev/AGS) and continuum-discretized coupled channels (CDCC) calculations is made for the resonant and nonresonant breakup of $^{11}$Be on proton target at 63.7 MeV/u incident energy. A simplified two-body model is used for $^{11}$Be which involves an inert $^{10}$Be(0$^+$) core and a valence neutron. The sensitivity of the calculated observables to the nucleon-nucleon potential dynamical input is analysed. We show that with the present NN and N-core dynamics the results remain a puzzle for the few-body problem of scattering from light exotic halo nuclei.

Simultaneous analysis of elastic scattering and transfer/breakup channels for the 6He+208Pb reaction at energies near the Coulomb barrier

The elastic and alpha-production channels for the 6He+208Pb reaction are investigated at energies around the Coulomb barrier (E_{lab}=14, 16, 18, 22, and 27 MeV). The effect of the two-neutron transfer channels on the elastic scattering has been studied within the Coupled-Reaction-Channels (CRC) method. We find that the explicit inclusion of these channels allows a simultaneous description of the elastic data and the inclusive alpha cross sections at backward angles. Three-body Continuum-Discretized Coupled-Channels (CDCC) calculations are found to reproduce the elastic data, but not the transfer/breakup data. The trivially-equivalent local polarization potential (TELP) derived from the CRC and CDCC calculations are found to explain the features found in previous phenomenological optical model calculations for this system.

Nuclear polarizability of helium isotopes in atomic transitions

We estimate the nuclear polarizability correction to atomic transition frequencies in various helium isotopes. This effect is non-negligible for high precision tests of quantum electrodynamics or accurate determination of the nuclear charge radius from spectroscopic measurements in helium atoms and ions. In particular, it amounts to $28(3)$ kHz for 1S-2S transition in 4He+.
