Exact Ground States and Domain Walls in One Dimensional Chiral Magnets

We determine exactly the phase structure of a chiral magnet in one spatial dimension with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction and a potential that is a function of the third component of the magnetization vector, $n_3$, with a Zeeman (linear with the coefficient $B$) term and an anisotropy (quadratic with the coefficient $A$) term, constrained so that $2A\leq \vert B\vert$. For large values of potential parameters $A$ and $B$, the system is in one of the ferromagnetic phases, whereas it is in the spiral phase for small values. In the spiral phase we find a continuum of spiral solutions, which are one-dimensionally modulated solutions with various periods. The ground state is determined as the spiral solution with the lowest average energy density. As the phase boundary approaches, the period of the lowest energy spiral solution diverges, and the spiral solutions become domain wall solutions with zero energy at the boundary. The energy of the domain wall solutions is positive in the homogeneous phase region, but is negative in the spiral phase region, signaling the instability of the homogeneous (ferromagnetic) state. The order of the phase transition between spiral and homogeneous phases and between polarized ($n_3=\pm 1$) and canted ($n_3\not=\pm 1$) ferromagnetic phases is found to be second order.

Exact WKB analysis of the vacuum pair production by time-dependent electric fields

We study the vacuum pair production by a time-dependent strong electric field based on the exact WKB analysis. We identify the generic structure of a Stokes graph for systems with the vacuum pair production and show that the number of produced pairs is given by a product of connection matrices for Stokes segments connecting pairs of turning points. We derive an explicit formula for the number of produced pairs, assuming the semi-classical limit. The obtained formula can be understood as a generalization of the divergent asymptotic series method by Berry, and is consistent with other semi-classical methods such as the worldline instanton method and the steepest descent evaluation of the Bogoliubov coefficients done by Brezin and Izykson. We also use the formula to discuss effects of time-dependence of the applied strong electric field including the interplay between the perturbative multi-photon pair production and non-peturbative Schwinger mechanism, and the dynamically assisted Schwinger mechanism.

Lattice ${\mathbb C} P^{N-1}$ model with ${\mathbb Z}_{N}$ twisted boundary condition: bions, adiabatic continuity and pseudo-entropy

We investigate the lattice ${\mathbb C} P^{N-1}$ sigma model on $S_{s}^{1}$(large) $\times$ $S_τ^{1}$(small) with the ${\mathbb Z}_{N}$ symmetric twisted boundary condition, where a sufficiently large ratio of the circumferences ($L_{s}\gg L_τ$) is taken to approximate ${\mathbb R} \times S^1$. We find that the expectation value of the Polyakov loop, which is an order parameter of the ${\mathbb Z}_N$ symmetry, remains consistent with zero ($|\langle P\rangle|\sim 0$) from small to relatively large inverse coupling $β$ (from large to small $L_τ$). As $β$ increases, the distribution of the Polyakov loop on the complex plane, which concentrates around the origin for small $β$, isotropically spreads and forms a regular $N$-sided-polygon shape (e.g. pentagon for $N=5$), leading to $|\langle P\rangle| \sim 0$. By investigating the dependence of the Polyakov loop on $S_{s}^{1}$ direction, we also verify the existence of fractional instantons and bions, which cause tunneling transition between the classical $N$ vacua and stabilize the ${\mathbb Z}_{N}$ symmetry. Even for quite high $β$, we find that a regular-polygon shape of the Polyakov-loop distribution, even if it is broken, tends to be restored and $|\langle P\rangle|$ gets smaller as the number of samples increases. To discuss the adiabatic continuity of the vacuum structure from another viewpoint, we calculate the $β$ dependence of ``pseudo-entropy" density $\propto\langle T_{xx}-T_{ττ}\rangle$. The result is consistent with the absence of a phase transition between large and small $β$ regions.

Instantons in Chiral Magnets

We exhaustively construct instanton solutions and elucidate their properties in one-dimensional anti-ferromagnetic chiral magnets based on the $O(3)$ nonlinear sigma model description of spin chains with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. By introducing an easy-axis potential and a staggered magnetic field, we obtain a phase diagram consisting of ground-state phases with two points (or one point) in the easy-axis dominant cases, a helical modulation at a fixed latitude of the sphere, and a tricritical point allowing helical modulations at an arbitrary latitude. We find that instantons (or skyrmions in two-dimensional Euclidean space) appear as composite solitons in different fashions in these phases: temporal domain walls or wall-antiwall pairs (bions) in the easy-axis dominant cases, dislocations (or phase slips) with fractional instanton numbers in the helical state, and isolated instantons and calorons living on the top of the helical modulation at the tricritical point. We also show that the models with DM interaction and an easy-plane potential can be mapped into those without them, providing a useful tool to investigate the model with the DM interaction.

Lattice study on the twisted ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ models on ${\mathbb R}\times S^{1}$

We report the results of the lattice simulation of the ${\mathbb C} P^{N-1}$ sigma model on $S_{s}^{1}$(large) $\times$ $S_τ^{1}$(small). We take a sufficiently large ratio of the circumferences to approximate the model on ${\mathbb R} \times S^1$. For periodic boundary condition imposed in the $S_τ^{1}$ direction, we show that the expectation value of the Polyakov loop undergoes a deconfinement crossover as the compactified circumference is decreased, where the peak of the associated susceptibility gets sharper for larger $N$. For ${\mathbb Z}_{N}$ twisted boundary condition, we find that, even at relatively high $β$ (small circumference), the regular $N$-sided polygon-shaped distributions of Polyakov loop leads to small expectation values of Polyakov loop, which implies unbroken ${\mathbb Z}_{N}$ symmetry if sufficient statistics and large volumes are adopted. We also argue the existence of fractional instantons and bions by investigating the dependence of the Polyakov loop on $S_{s}^{1}$ direction, which causes transition between ${\mathbb Z}_{N}$ vacua.

Ising Model on Twisted Lattice and Holographic RG flow

The partition function of the two-dimensional Ising model is exactly obtained on a lattice with a twisted boundary condition. The continuum limit of the model off the critical temperature is found to give the mass-deformed Ising conformal field theory (CFT) on the torus with the complex structure $τ$. We find that the renormalization group (RG) flow of the mass parameter can be holographically described in terms of the three-dimensional gravity including a scalar field with a simple nonlinear kinetic function and a quadratic potential.

Non-BPS exact solutions and their relation to bions in ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ models

We investigate non-BPS exact solutions in ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ sigma models on ${\mathbb R}^1 \times S^{1}$ with twisted boundary conditions, by using the Din-Zakrzewski projection method. We focus on the relation of the non-BPS solutions to the ansatz of multi-instanton (bion) configurations and discuss their significance in the context of the resurgence theory. We find that the transition between seemingly distinct configurations of multi-instantons occur as moduli changes in the non-BPS solutions, and the simplest non-BPS exact solution corresponds to multi-bion configurations with fully-compressed double fractional instantons in the middle. It indicates that the non-BPS solutions make small but nonzero contribution to the resurgent trans-series as special cases of the multi-bion configurations. We observe a generic pattern of transitions between distinct multi-bion configurations (flipping partners), leading to the three essential properties of the non-BPS exact solution: (i) opposite sign for terms corresponding to the left and right infinities, (ii) symmetric location of fractional instantons, and (iii) the transition between distinct bion configurations. By studying the balance of forces, we show that the relative phases between the instanton constituents play decisive roles in stability and instability of the muli-instanton configurations. We discuss local and global instabilities of the solutions such as negative modes and the flow to the other saddle points, by considering the deformations of the non-BPS exact solutions within our multi-instanton ansatz. We also briefly discuss some classes of the non-BPS exact solutions in Grassmann sigma models.

Non-perturbative Contributions from Complexified Solutions in $\mathbb{C}P^{N-1}$ Models

We discuss the non-perturbative contributions from real and complex saddle point solutions in the $\mathbb{C}P^1$ quantum mechanics with fermionic degrees of freedom, using the Lefschetz thimble formalism beyond the gaussian approximation. We find bion solutions, which correspond to (complexified) instanton-antiinstanton configurations stabilized in the presence of the fermionic degrees of freedom. By computing the one-loop determinants in the bion backgrounds, we obtain the leading order contributions from both the real and complex bion solutions. To incorporate quasi zero modes which become nearly massless in a weak coupling limit, we regard the bion solutions as well-separated instanton-antiinstanton configurations and calculate a complexified quasi moduli integral based on the Lefschetz thimble formalism. The non-perturbative contributions from the real and complex bions are shown to cancel out in the supersymmetric case and give an (expected) ambiguity in the non-supersymmetric case, which plays a vital role in the resurgent trans-series. For nearly supersymmetric situation, evaluation of the Lefschetz thimble gives results in precise agreement with those of the direct evaluation of the Schrödinger equation. We also perform the same analysis for the sine-Gordon quantum mechanics and point out some important differences showing that the sine-Gordon quantum mechanics does not correctly describe the 1d limit of the $\mathbb{C}P^{N-1}$ field theory of $\mathbb{R} \times S^1$.

Resurgence in sine-Gordon quantum mechanics: Exact agreement between multi-instantons and uniform WKB

We compute multi-instanton amplitudes in the sine-Gordon quantum mechanics (periodic cosine potential) by integrating out quasi-moduli parameters corresponding to separations of instantons and anti-instantons. We propose an extension of Bogomolnyi--Zinn-Justin prescription for multi-instanton configurations and an appropriate subtraction scheme. We obtain the multi-instanton contributions to the energy eigenvalue of the lowest band at the zeroth order of the coupling constant. For the configurations with only instantons (anti-instantons), we obtain unambiguous results. For those with both instantons and anti-instantons, we obtain results with imaginary parts, which depend on the path of analytic continuation. We show that the imaginary parts of the multi-instanton amplitudes precisely cancel the imaginary parts of the Borel resummation of the perturbation series, and verify that our results completely agree with those based on the uniform-WKB calculations, thus confirming the resurgence : divergent perturbation series combined with the nonperturbative multi-instanton contributions conspire to give unambiguous results. We also study the neutral bion contributions in the ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ model on ${\mathbb R}^1\times S^{1}$ with a small circumference, taking account of the relative phase moduli between the fractional instanton and anti-instanton. We find that the sign of the interaction potential depends on the relative phase moduli, and that both the real and imaginary parts resulting from quasi-moduli integral of the neutral bion get quantitative corrections compared to the sine-Gordon quantum mechanics.

Classifying bions in Grassmann sigma models and non-Abelian gauge theories by D-branes

We classify bions in the Grassmann $Gr_{N_{\rm F},N_{\rm C}}$ sigma model (including the ${\mathbb C}P^{N_{\rm F}-1}$ model) on ${\mathbb R}^{1}\times S^{1}$ with twisted boundary conditions. We formulate these models as $U(N_{\rm C})$ gauge theories with $N_{\rm F}$ flavors in the fundamental representations. These theories can be promoted to supersymmetric gauge theories and further can be embedded into D-brane configurations in type II superstring theories. We focus on specific configurations composed of multiple fractional instantons, termed neutral bions and charged bions, which are identified as perturbative infrared renormalons by Ünsal and his collaborators. We show that D-brane configurations as well as the moduli matrix offer a very useful tool to classify all possible bion configurations in these models. Contrary to the ${\mathbb C}P^{N_{\rm F}-1}$ model, there exist Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) fractional instantons with topological charge greater than unity (of order $N_{\rm C}$) that cannot be reduced to a composite of an instanton and fractional instantons. As a consequence, we find that the Grassmann sigma model admits neutral bions made of BPS and anti-BPS fractional instantons each of which has topological charge greater (less) than one (minus one), that are not decomposable into instanton anti-instanton and the rests. The ${\mathbb C}P^{N_{\rm F}-1}$ model is found to have no charged bions. In contrast, we find that the Grassmann sigma model admits charged bions, for which we construct exact non-BPS solutions of the field equations.

Dynamics of slender monopoles and anti-monopoles in non-Abelian superconductor

Low energy dynamics of magnetic monopoles and anti-monopoles in the U(2) gauge theory is studied in the Higgs (non-Abelian superconducting) phase. The monopoles in this superconducting phase are not spherical but are of slender ellipsoid which are pierced by a vortex string. We investigate scattering of the slender monopole and anti-monopole, and find that they do not always decay into radiation, contrary to our naive intuition. They can repel, make bound states (magnetic mesons) or resonances. Analytical solutions including any number of monopoles and anti-monopoles are obtained in the first non-trivial order of rigid-body approximation. We point out that some part of solutions of slender monopole system in 1+3 dimensions can be mapped exactly onto the sine-Gordon system in 1+1 dimensions. This observation allows us to visualize dynamics of monopole and anti-monopole scattering easily.

Neutral bions in the ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ model

We study classical configurations in the ${\mathbb C}P^{N-1}$ model on ${\mathbb R}^{1}\times S^{1}$ with twisted boundary conditions. We focus on specific configurations composed of multiple fractionalized-instantons, termed "neutral bions", which are identified as "perturbative infrared renormalons" by Ünsal and his collaborators. For ${\mathbb Z}_N$ twisted boundary conditions, we consider an explicit ansatz corresponding to topologically trivial configurations containing one fractionalized instanton ($ν=1/N$) and one fractionalized anti-instanton ($ν=-1/N$) at large separations, and exhibit the attractive interaction between the instanton constituents and how they behave at shorter separations. We show that the bosonic interaction potential between the constituents as a function of both the separation and $N$ is consistent with the standard separated-instanton calculus even from short to large separations, which indicates that the ansatz enables us to study bions and the related physics for a wide range of separations. We also propose different bion ansatze in a certain non-${\mathbb Z}_{N}$ twisted boundary condition corresponding to the "split" vacuum for $N= 3$ and its extensions for $N\geq 3$. We find that the interaction potential has qualitatively the same asymptotic behavior and $N$-dependence as those of bions for ${\mathbb Z}_{N}$ twisted boundary conditions.

Neutral bions in the CP^{N-1} model for resurgence

Classical configurations in the CP^{N-1} model on R^1 x S^1 is studied with twisted boundary conditions. Starting from fractional instantons with the Z_N twisted boundary conditions, we review briefly the relevance of our study to resurgence phenomenon in field theory. We consider primarily configurations composed of multiple fractional instantons, called "neutral bions", which are identified as "perturbative infrared renormalons". We construct an explicit ansatz corresponding to topologically trivial configurations containing one fractional instanton (nu=1/N) and one fractional anti-instanton (nu=-1/N), which is guaranteed to become a solution of field equations asymptotically for large separations. The attractive interactions between the instanton constituents from small to large separations are found to be consistent with the standard separated-instanton calculus. Our results suggest that the ansatz enables us to study bions and the related physics for a wide range of separations. Localization Method for Volume of Domain-Wall Moduli Spaces

Volume of moduli space of non-Abelian BPS domain-walls is exactly obtained in U(N_c) gauge theory with N_f matters. The volume of the moduli space is formulated, without an explicit metric, by a path integral under constraints on BPS equations. The path integral over fields reduces to a finite dimensional contour integral by a localization mechanism. Our volume formula satisfies a Seiberg like duality between moduli spaces of the U(N_c) and U(N_f-N_c) non-Abelian BPS domain-walls in a strong coupling region. We also find a T-duality between domain-walls and vortices on a cylinder. The moduli space volume of non-Abelian local (N_c=N_f) vortices on the cylinder agrees exactly with that on a sphere. The volume formula reveals various geometrical properties of the moduli space.

Stabilizing matter and gauge fields localized on walls

Both non-Abelian gauge fields and minimally interacting massless matter fields are localized on a domain wall in the five-dimensional spacetime. Field-dependent gauge coupling naturally gives a position-dependent coupling to localize non-Abelian gauge fields on the domain wall. An economical field content allows us to eliminate a moduli for a instability, and to demonstrate the positivity of the position-dependent coupling in the entire moduli space. Effective Lagrangian similar to the chiral Lagrangian is found with a new feature of different coupling strengths for adjoint and singlet matter that depend on the width of the domain wall.

Higher Derivative Corrections to Non-Abelian Vortex Effective Theory

We give a systematic method to calculate higher derivative corrections to low-energy effective theories of solitons, which are in general non-linear sigma models on the moduli spaces of the solitons. By applying it to the effective theory of a single BPS non-Abelian vortex in U(N) gauge theory with N fundamental Higgs fields, we obtain four derivative corrections to the effective sigma model on the moduli space C \times CP^{N-1}. We compare them with the Nambu-Goto action and the Faddeev-Skyrme model. We also show that Yang-Mills instantons/monopoles trapped inside a non-Abelian vortex membrane/string are not modified in the presence of higher derivative terms.

Localization of matter fields and non-Abelian gauge fields on domain walls

We propose a method for simultaneous localization of non-Abelian gauge fields and matter fields with minimal interaction on domain walls using $U(N)_c$ gauge theory with $SU(N)_{L}\times SU(N)_{R}\times U(1)_{A}$ flavor symmetry. Localization of non-Abelian fields is achieved using field-dependent gauge coupling. We find that effective Lagrangian up to second order of derivatives for low energy fluctuations resembles a chiral model from hadron physics with additional minimal interactions of pions with localized gauge fields together with nonlinear interactions of moduli fields. This result provides a step towards a realistic model building of brane-world scenario using topological solitons.

Matter Fields and Non-Abelian Gauge Fields Localized on Walls

Massless matter fields and non-Abelian gauge fields are localized on domain walls in a (4+1)-dimensional $U(N)_c$ gauge theory with $SU(N)_{L}\times SU(N)_{R}\times U(1)_{A}$ flavor symmetry. We also introduce $SU(N)_{L+R}$ flavor gauge fields and a scalar-field-dependent gauge coupling, which provides massless non-Abelian gauge fields localized on the wall. We find a chiral Lagrangian interacting minimally with the non-Abelian gauge field together with nonlinear interactions of moduli fields as the (3+1)-dimensional effective field theory up to the second order of derivatives. Our result provides a step towards a realistic model building of brane-world scenario using topological solitons.

Dynamics of Non-Abelian Vortices

The scattering is studied using moduli space metric for well-separated vortices of non-Abelian vortices in (2+1)-dimensional U(N) gauge theories with N Higgs fields in the fundamental representation. Unlike vortices in the Abelian-Higgs model, dynamics of non-Abelian vortices has a lot of new features; The kinetic energy in real space can be transfered to that of internal orientational moduli and vice versa, the energy and charge transfer between two vortices, the scattering angle of collisions with a fixed impact parameter depends on the internal orientations, and some resonances appear due to synchronization of the orientations. Scattering of dyonic non-Abelian vortices in a mass deformed theory is also studied. We find a bound state of two vortices moving along coils around a circle, like a loop of a phone code.

Moduli space volume of vortex and localization

Volume of moduli space of BPS vortices on a compact genus h Riemann surface Sigma_h is evaluated by means of topological field theory and localization technique. Vortex in Abelian gauge theory with a single charged scalar field (ANO vortex) is studied first and is found that the volume of the moduli space agrees with the previous results obtained more directly by integrating over the moduli space metric. Next we extend the evaluation to non-Abelian gauge groups and multi-flavors of scalar fields in the fundamental representation. We find that the result of localization can be consistently understood in terms of moduli matrix formalism wherever possible. More details are found in our paper in Prog.Theor.Phys.126 (2011) 637.

We evaluate volume of moduli space of BPS vortices on a compact Riemann surface by using topological field theory and localization technique developed by Moore, Nekrasov and Shatashvili. We apply this technique to Abelian (ANO) vortex and show that the volume of moduli space agrees with the previous results obtained by integrating over the moduli space metric. We extend the evaluation to non-Abelian gauge groups and multi-flavors. We also compare our results with the volume of the Kahler quotient space inspired by the brane configuration.

Maximally Non-Abelian Vortices from Self-dual Yang--Mills Fields

A particular dimensional reduction of SU(2N) Yang--Mills theory on $Σ\times S^2$, with $Σ$ a Riemann surface, yields an $S(U(N) \times U(N))$ gauge theory on $Σ$, with a matrix Higgs field. The SU(2N) self-dual Yang--Mills equations reduce to Bogomolny equations for vortices on $Σ$. These equations are formally integrable if $Σ$ is the hyperbolic plane, and we present a subclass of solutions.

Non-Abelian Gauge Field Localized on Walls with Four-Dimensional World Volume

A mechanism using the position-dependent gauge coupling is proposed to localize non-Abelian gauge fields on domain walls in five-dimensional space-time. Low-energy effective theory posseses a massless vector field, and a mass gap. The four-dimensional gauge invariance is maintained intact. We obtain perturbatively the four-dimensional Coulomb law for static sources on the domain wall. BPS domain wall solutions with the localization mechanism are explicitly constructed in the U(1)xU(1) supersymmetric gauge theory coupling to the non-Abelian gauge fields only through the cubic prepotential, which is consistent with the general principle of supersymmetry in five-dimensional space-time.

Domain walls with non-Abelian orientational moduli

Domain walls with non-Abelian orientational moduli are constructed in U(N) gauge theories coupled to Higgs scalar fields with degenerate masses. The associated global symmetry is broken by the domain walls, resulting in the Nambu-Goldstone (and quasi-Nambu-Goldstone) bosons, which form the non-Abelian orientational moduli. As walls separate, the wave functions of the non-Abelian orientational moduli spread between domain walls. By taking the limit of Higgs mass differences to vanish, we clarify the convertion of wall position moduli into the non-Abelian orientational moduli. The moduli space metric and its Kahler potential of the effective field theory on the domain walls are constructed. We consider two models: a U(1) gauge theory with several charged Higgs fields, and a U(N) gauge theory with 2N Higgs fields in the fundamental representation. Dynamics of Domain Wall Networks

Networks or webs of domain walls are admitted in Abelian or non-Abelian gauge theory coupled to fundamental Higgs fields with complex masses. We examine the dynamics of the domain wall loops by using the moduli approximation and find a phase rotation induces a repulsive force which can be understood as a Noether charge of Q-solitons. Non-Abelian gauge theory allows different types of loops which can be deformed to each other by changing a modulus. This admits the moduli geometry like a sandglass made by gluing the tips of the two cigar-(cone-)like metrics of a single triangle loop. We conclude that the sizes of all loops tend to grow for a late time in general models with complex Higgs masses, while the sizes are stabilized at some values once triplet masses are introduced for the Higgs fields. We also show that the stationary motion on the moduli space of the domain wall webs represents 1/4 BPS Q-webs of walls.

Moduli Space of BPS Walls in Supersymmetric Gauge Theories

Existence and uniqueness of the solution are proved for the `master equation' derived from the BPS equation for the vector multiplet scalar in the U(1) gauge theory with Nf charged matter hypermultiplets with eight supercharges. This proof finally establishes the fact that the moduli space of the BPS domain wall solution is CP^(N_f-1) for the gauge theory at finite gauge couplings. Therefore the moduli space at finite gauge couplings is topologically the same manifold as that at infinite gauge coupling, where the gauged linear sigma model reduces to a nonlinear sigma model. The proof is extended to the U(Nc) gauge theory with Nf hypermultiplets in the fundamental representation, provided the moduli matrix of the domain wall solution is U(1)-factorizable. Thus the dimension of the moduli space of U(Nc) gauge theory is bounded from below by the dimension of the U(1)-factorizable part of the moduli space. We also obtain sharp estimates of the asymptotic exponential decay which depend on both the gauge coupling and the hypermultiplet mass differences.

Moduli Space of Non-Abelian Vortices

We completely determine the moduli space M_{N,k} of k-vortices in U(N) gauge theory with N Higgs fields in the fundamental representation. Its open subset for separated vortices is found as the symmetric product (C x CP^{N-1})^k / S_k. Orbifold singularities of this space correspond to coincident vortices and are resolved resulting in a smooth moduli manifold. Relation to Kahler quotient construction is discussed.

Solitons in the Higgs phase -- the moduli matrix approach --

We review our recent work on solitons in the Higgs phase. We use U(N_C) gauge theory with N_F Higgs scalar fields in the fundamental representation, which can be extended to possess eight supercharges. We propose the moduli matrix as a fundamental tool to exhaust all BPS solutions, and to characterize all possible moduli parameters. Moduli spaces of domain walls (kinks) and vortices, which are the only elementary solitons in the Higgs phase, are found in terms of the moduli matrix. Stable monopoles and instantons can exist in the Higgs phase if they are attached by vortices to form composite solitons. The moduli spaces of these composite solitons are also worked out in terms of the moduli matrix. Webs of walls can also be formed with characteristic difference between Abelian and non-Abelian gauge theories. We characterize the total moduli space of these elementary as well as composite solitons. Effective Lagrangians are constructed on walls and vortices in a compact form. We also present several new results on interactions of various solitons, such as monopoles, vortices, and walls. Review parts contain our works on domain walls (hep-th/0404198, hep-th/0405194, hep-th/0412024, hep-th/0503033, hep-th/0505136), vortices (hep-th/0511088, hep-th/0601181), domain wall webs (hep-th/0506135, hep-th/0508241, hep-th/0509127), monopole-vortex-wall systems (hep-th/0405129, hep-th/0501207), instanton-vortex systems (hep-th/0412048), effective Lagrangian on walls and vortices (hep-th/0602289), classification of BPS equations (hep-th/0506257), and Skyrmions (hep-th/0508130).

Non-BPS Walls and Their Stability in 5D Supersymmetric Theory

Although it is only metastable under large fluctuations, we can give topological stability by considering a model with a double covering of the T^\star(\mathbb{CP}^1) target manifold. Even if we allow discontinuities of the Z_2 odd field across the boundary, we always obtain SUSY preservation but obtain the radius stabilization only when the discontinuity is fixed by other mechanism.

Walls and vortices in supersymmetric non-abelian gauge theories

We review recent results on the BPS multi-wall solutions in supersymmetric U(N_C) gauge theories in five dimensions with N_F(>N_C) hypermultiplets in the fundamental representation. Total moduli space of the BPS non-Abelian walls is found to be the complex Grassmann manifold SU(N_F)/[SU(N_C)xSU(N_F-N_C)xU(1)]. Exact solutions are obtained with full generic moduli for infinite gauge coupling. A 1/4 BPS equation is also solved, giving vortices together with the non-Abelian walls and monopoles in the Higgs phase attached to the vortices. Manifest Supersymmetry for BPS Walls in N=2 Nonlinear Sigma Models

BPS equations and wall solutions are studied keeping (part of) supersymmetry (SUSY) manifest. Using N=1 superfields, massive hyper-Kahler quotient is introduced to obtain massive N=2 (8 SUSY) nonlinear sigma models in four dimensions with T*CP(n) target manifold, which yield BPS wall solutions for the n=1 case. We also describe massive hyper-Kahler quotient of T*CP(n) by using the harmonic superspace formalism which preserves all SUSY manifestly, and BPS equations and wall solutions are obtained in the n=1 case.

Stability and Fluctuations on Walls in N=1 Supergravity

The recently found non-BPS multi-wall configurations in the N=1 supergravity in four dimensions is shown to have no tachyonic scalar fluctuations without additional stabilization mechanisms. Mass of radion (lightest massive fluctuation) is found to be proportional to $Lambda {\rm e}^{-πΛR/2}$, where $Λ$ is the inverse width of the wall and $ R$ is the radius of compactified dimension. We obtain localized massless graviton and gravitino forming a supermultiplet with respect to the Killing spinor. The relation between the bulk energy density and the boundary energy density (cosmological constants) is an automatic consequence of the field equation and Einstein equation. In the limit of vanishing gravitational coupling, the Nambu-Goldstone modes are reproduced.

Wall Solution with Weak Gravity Limit in Five Dimensional Supergravity

In five-dimensional supergravity, an exact solution of BPS wall is found for a gravitational deformation of the massive Eguchi-Hanson nonlinear sigma model. The warp factor decreases for both infinities of the extra dimension. Thin wall limit gives the Randall-Sundrum model without fine-tuning of input parameters. We also obtain wall solutions with warp factors which are flat or increasing in one side, by varying a deformation parameter of the potential.

Brane - Antibrane as a Defect of Tachyon Condensation

In a tachyon effective field theory of a non-BPS brane, we construct a classical solution representing a parallel brane-antibrane. The solution is made of a kink and an antikink placed at antipodal points of S^1. Estimation of the brane energy suggests an excitation of a string connecting the two branes, even though the theory is Abelian. We performed fluctuation analysis around the obtained solution, and find the structure of the supersymmetry breaking by the co-existence of the brane and the antibrane. We discuss possible processes of the pair-annihilation of the brane defect.

Exactly solved BPS wall and winding number in N=1 Supergravity

A BPS exact wall solution is found in N=1 supergravity in four dimensions. The model uses chiral scalar field with a periodic superpotential admitting winding numbers. Maintaining the periodicity in supergravity requires a gravitational correction to superpotential which allows the exact solution. By introducing boundary cosmological constants, we construct non-BPS multi-wall solutions for which a systematic analytic approximation is worked out for small gravitational coupling.

BPS Lumps and Their Intersections in ${\cal N}=2$ SUSY Nonlinear Sigma Models

BPS lumps in ${\cal N}=2$ SUSY nonlinear sigma models on hyper-\kahler manifolds in four dimensions are studied. We present new lump solutions with various kinds of topological charges. New BPS equations and a new BPS bound, expressed by the three complex structures on hyper-\kahler manifolds, are found. We show that any states satisfying these BPS equations preserve 1/8 (1/4) SUSY of ${\cal N}=2$ SUSY nonlinear sigma models with (without) a potential term. These BPS states include non-parallel multi-(Q-)lumps.

An Exact Solution of BPS Domain Wall Junction

An exact solution of domain wall junction is obtained in a four-dimensional N=1 supersymmetric U(1) X U(1)' gauge theory with three pairs of chiral superfields which is motivated by the N=2 SU(2) gauge theory with one flavor perturbed by an adjoint scalar mass. The solution allows us to evaluate various quantities including a new central charge Y_k associated with the junction besides Z_k which appears already in domain walls. We find that the new central charge Y_k gives a negative contribution to the mass of the domain wall junction whereas the central charge Z_k gives a dominant positive contribution. One has to be cautious to identify the central charge Y_k alone as the mass of the junction.

M theory and the ``integrating in'' method with an antisymmetric tensor

Recently, a non-hyperelliptic curve describing the Coulomb branch of N=2 SUSY $SU(N_c)$ Yang-Mills theory with an antisymmetric tensor matter was proposed using a configuration of a single M theory five-brane. We study the singular surface in the moduli space of the curve to compare it with results from the ``integrating in'' method in field theory. In order to achieve the consistency, we find it necessary to take account of an additional superpotential $W_Δ$ which has been neglected so far. The explicit form of $W_Δ$ is worked out.

Vacuum Structures of Supersymmetric Yang-Mills Theories in $1+1$ Dimensions

Vacuum structures of supersymmetric (SUSY) Yang-Mills theories in $1+1$ dimensions are studied with the spatial direction compactified. SUSY allows only periodic boundary conditions for both fermions and bosons. By using the Born-Oppenheimer approximation for the weak coupling limit, we find that the vacuum energy vanishes, and hence the SUSY is unbroken. Other boundary conditions are also studied, especially the antiperiodic boundary condition for fermions which is related to the system in finite temperatures. In that case we find for gaugino bilinears a nonvanishing vacuum condensation which indicates instanton contributions.

Mass Spectra of Supersymmetric Yang-Mills Theories in 1+1 Dimensions

Physical mass spectra of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories in 1+1 dimensions are evaluated in the light-cone gauge with a compact spatial dimension. The supercharges are constructed and the infrared regularization is unambiguously prescribed for supercharges, instead of the light-cone Hamiltonian. This provides a manifestly supersymmetric infrared regularization for the discretized light-cone approach. By an exact diagonalization of the supercharge matrix between up to several hundred color singlet bound states, we find a rapidly increasing density of states as mass increases.

Renormalization group flow in one- and two-matrix models

Large-$N$ renormalization group equations for one- and two-matrix models are derived. The exact renormalization group equation involving infinitely many induced interactions can be rewritten in a form that has a finite number of coupling constants by taking account of reparametrization identities. Despite the nonlinearity of the equation, the location of fixed points and the scaling exponents can be extracted from the equation. They agree with the spectrum of relevant operators in the exact solution. A linearized $β$-function approximates well the global phase structure which includes several nontrivial fixed points. The global renormalization group flow suggests a kind of $c$-theorem in two-dimensional quantum gravity.

Physical Degrees of Freedom in 2-D String Field Theories

States in the absolute (semi-relative) cohomology but not in the relative cohomology are examined through the component decomposition of the string field theory action for the 2-D string. It is found that they are auxiliary fields without kinetic terms, but are important for instance in the master equation for the Ward-Takahashi identities. The ghost structure is analyzed in the Siegel gauge, but it is noted that the absolute (semi-relative) cohomology states are lost.
