Advanced cryogenic process control and monitoring for the SPIRAL2 superconducting LINAC

SPIRAL2 is a superconducting accelerator for protons, deuterons and heavy ions delivering a maximum beam power of 200 kW at 40 MeV (for deuteron beams). 26 superconducting quarter wave cavities are operated at 4.4 K, plunged in a liquid helium bath with a drastic phase separator pressure control. Previous years have seen the development of advanced process control for cryogenics allowing to cope with high heat load dynamics thanks to an automatic heat dissipation compensation and a model based control. The latter is based on models, using the Simcryogenics library, optimized and linearised in the Programmable Logic Controllers. The SPIRAL2 operation has demonstrated that such control allows to keep the specified conditions for RF and beam operation even at levels of heat load dissipation approaching the physical limits of the cryogenic system. These developments allowed to synthesise a virtual observer of the dynamic heat load dissipated by the cavities. The present paper summarises the development of such observer based on the physical thermodynamic model and on machine learning techniques.

Cryogenic thermo-acoustics in the SPIRAL2 LINAC

SPIRAL2 is a superconducting LINAC subject to cryogenic thermo-acoustic oscillations occurring in its valves-boxes. 4 years of monitoring and experimental investigations with thousands of datasets turned these unwanted effects into an opportunity to study and understand thermo-acoustics in a complex environment such as a real life accelerator. Without digging deep into Rott's thermo-acoustics theory, thoroughly shown in other works, this paper describes the instrumentation and the methods that prepare more advanced modelling of these phenomena either to damp or to harness the energy of cryogenic thermo-acoustics.

Cryogenic thermo-acoustic oscillations highlight and study in the SPIRAL2 superconducting LINAC

Cryogenic thermoacoustic oscillations is an area of interest of several studies. For superconducting accelerators, it is an unwanted phenomena that we usually want to get rid off. The SPIRAL2 superconducting accelerator had distributed Taconis all over its cryostats. This paper spans the different steps from their first detection to their damping with a highlight on the methods and the instrumentation that has been used. The presented study also sets the ground for a real life experimental investigation of thermo-ascoustics in complex geometries such as superconducting LINACs. With modern Big data analysis and simulation tools, it also sets the ground for the developments of new data linked codes that fit these complex situations.

First full cool down of the SPIRAL 2 superconducting LINAC

SPIRAL 2 is a high intensity heavy ions beams accelerator project that has been going on for more than 10 years now. Countless efforts in different disciplines made it what it is today. One of the most important steps after the set up of the different equipments has been the very first full cool down of the superconducting cavities in an accelerator operation type configuration. While this has been a major achievement for the SPIRAL 2 teams, it also hi-lighted new challenges and constraints that would have to be addressed in order to have a high availability rate of the beam from the cryogenics side. This paper retraces this particular episode.
