Field-induced compensation of magnetic exchange as the possible origin of reentrant superconductivity in UTe$_2$

The potential spin-triplet heavy-fermion superconductor UTe$_2$ exhibits signatures of multiple distinct superconducting phases. For field aligned along the $b$ axis, a metamagnetic transition occurs at $μ_0 H_\mathrm{m}\approx35\,$T. It is associated with magnetic fluctuations that may be beneficial for the field-reinforced superconductivity surviving up to $H_\mathrm{m}$. Once the field is tilted away from the $b$ towards the $c$ axis, a reentrant superconducting phase emerges just above $H_\mathrm{m}$. In order to better understand this remarkably field-resistant superconducting phase, we conducted magnetic-torque and magnetotransport measurements in pulsed magnetic fields. We determine the record-breaking upper critical field of $μ_0 H_\mathrm{c2}\approx 73\,$T and its evolution with angle. Furthermore, the normal-state Hall effect experiences a drastic suppression indicative of a reduced band polarization above $H_\mathrm{m}$ in the angular range around $30^\circ$ caused by a partial compensation between the applied field and an exchange field. This promotes the Jaccarino-Peter effect as a likely mechanism for the reentrant superconductivity above $H_\mathrm{m}$.

Magnetic-field-induced Anderson localization in orbital selective antiferromagnet BaMn$_2$Bi$_2$

We report a metal-insulator transition (MIT) in the half-filled multiorbital antiferromagnet (AF) BaMn$_2$Bi$_2$ that is tunable by a magnetic field perpendicular to the AF sublattices. Instead of an Anderson-Mott mechanism usually expected in strongly correlated systems, we find by scaling analyses that the MIT is driven by an Anderson localization. Electrical and thermoelectrical transport measurements in combination with electronic band calculations reveal a strong orbital-dependent correlation effect, where both weakly and strongly correlated $3d$-derived bands coexist with decoupled charge excitations. Weakly correlated holelike carriers in the $d_{xy}$-derived band dominate the transport properties and exhibit the Anderson localization, whereas other $3d$ bands show clear Mott-like behaviors with their spins ordered into AF sublattices. The tuning role played by the perpendicular magnetic field supports a strong spin-spin coupling between itinerant holelike carriers and the AF fluctuations, which is in sharp contrast to their weak charge coupling.

Large negative magnetoresistance in BaMn$_2$Bi$_2$ antiferromagnet

A very large negative magnetoresistance (LNMR) is observed in the insulating regime of the antiferromagnet BaMn$_2$Bi$_2$ when a magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the direction of the sublattice magnetization. High perpendicular magnetic field eventually suppresses the insulating behavior and allows BaMn$_2$Bi$_2$ to re-enter a metallic state. This effect is seemingly unrelated to any field induced magnetic phase transition, as measurements of magnetic susceptibility and specific heat did not find any anomaly as a function of magnetic fields at temperatures above $2\,\mathrm{K}$. The LNMR appears in both current-in-plane and current-out-of-plane settings, and Hall effects suggest that its origin lies in an extreme sensitivity of conduction processes of holelike carriers to the infinitesimal field-induced canting of the sublattice magnetization. The LNMR-induced metallic state may thus be associated with the breaking of the antiferromagnetic parity-time symmetry by perpendicular magnetic fields and/or the intricate multi-orbital electronic structure of BaMn$_2$Bi$_2$.

Investigation of in-plane anisotropy of c-axis magnetoresistance for BiCh2-based layered superconductor NdO0.7F0.3BiS2

We have investigated the in-plane anisotropy of the c-axis magnetoresistance (MR) in both superconducting and normal states of single crystals of NdO0.7F0.3BiS2 under in-plane magnetic fields. In the superconducting states of NdO0.7F0.3BiS2, four-fold-symmetric in-plane anisotropy of the c-axis MR was observed below the superconducting transition temperature. Since the crystal structure of NdO0.7F0.3BiS2 is tetragonal, the rotational symmetry in the superconducting state is preserved in the present compound. This result is clearly different from the previous report observed in LaO0.5F0.5BiSSe single crystals, where the in-plane MR in the superconducting state shows two-fold symmetry. On the other hand, in the normal states of NdO0.7F0.3BiS2, two-fold symmetric MR with a small amplitude was observed. The possible origin of the two-fold-symmetric behavior was discussed with the presence of local structural disorder in the conducting plane of BiCh2-based compounds.

Two-fold symmetry of in-plane magnetoresistance anisotropy in the superconducting states of BiCh2-based LaO0.9F0.1BiSSe single crystal

Recently, two-fold symmetric in-plane anisotropy of the superconducting properties have been observed in a single crystal of BiCh2-based (Ch: S, Se) layered superconductor LaO0.5F0.5BiSSe having a tetragonal (four-fold-symmetric) in-plane structure; the phenomena are very similar to those observed in nematic superconductors. To explore the origin of the two-fold symmetric anisotropy in the BiCh2-based system, we have investigated the electron-doping dependence on the anisotropy by examining the in-plane anisotropy of the magnetoresistance in the superconducting states for a single crystal of LaO0.9F0.1BiSSe under high magnetic fields up to 15 T. We observed a two-fold symmetry of in-plane anisotropy of magnetoresistance for LaO0.9F0.1BiSSe. The results obtained for LaO0.9F0.1BiSSe are quite similar to those observed for LaO0.5F0.5BiSSe, which has a higher electron doping concentration than LaO0.9F0.1BiSSe. Our present finding suggests that the emergence of the in-plane symmetry breaking in the superconducting state is robust to the carrier concentration in the series of LaO1-xFxBiSSe.

Spin Relaxation Mechanism in a Highly Doped Organic Polymer Film

We report the systematic studies of spin current transport and relaxation mechanism in highly doped organic polymer film. In this study, we have determined spin diffusion length (SDL), spin lifetime, and spin diffusion constant by using different experimental techniques. The spin lifetime estimated from the electron paramagnetic resonance experiment is much shorter than the previous expectation beyond the experimental ambiguity. This suggests that significantly large spin diffusion constant, which is reasonably explained by the hopping transport mechanism in degenerate semiconductors, exists in highly doped organic semiconductors. The calculated SDL using the spin lifetime and spin diffusion constant estimated from our experiment is comparable to the experimentally obtained SDL of the order of one hundred nanometers. Moreover, the present study revealed that the spin angular momentum is almost preserved in the hopping events. In other words, the spin relaxation mainly occurs due to the spin-orbit coupling at the nanoscale crystalline grains.

Fermi surface in KFe2As2 determined via de Haas-van Alphen oscillation measurements

We have completely determined the Fermi surface in KFe$_2$As$_2$ via de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) measurements. Fundamental frequencies $ε$, $α$, $ζ$, and $β$ are observed in KFe$_2$As$_2$. The first one is attributed to a hole cylinder near the X point of the Brillouin zone, while the others to hole cylinders at the $Γ$ point. We also observe magnetic breakdown frequencies between $α$ and $ζ$ and suggest a plausible explanation for them. The experimental frequencies show deviations from frequencies predicted by band structure calculations. Large effective masses up to 19 $m_e$ for $B \parallel c$ have been found, $m_e$ being the free electron mass. The carrier number and Sommerfeld coefficient of the specific heat are estimated to be 1.01 -- 1.03 holes per formula unit and 82 -- 94 mJmol$^{-1}$K$^{-2}$, respectively, which are consistent with the chemical stoichiometry and a direct measure of 93 mJmol$^{-1}$K$^{-2}$ [H. Fukazawa \textit{et al}., J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. \textbf{80SA}, SA118 (2011)]. The Sommerfeld coefficient is about 9 times enhanced over a band value, suggesting the importance of low-energy spin and/or orbital fluctuations, and places KFe$_2$As$_2$ among strongly correlated metals. We have also performed dHvA measurements on Ba$_{0.07}$K$_{0.93}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ and have observed the $α$ and $β$ frequencies.

Pressure-induced superconductivity in EuFe2As2 without a quantum critical point: magnetotransport and upper critical field measurements under high pressure

Resistivity and Hall effect measurements of EuFe$_2$As$_2$ up to 3.2\,GPa indicate no divergence of quasiparticle effective mass at the pressure $P_\mathrm{c}$ where the magnetic and structural transition disappears. This is corroborated by analysis of the temperature ($T$) dependence of the upper critical field. $T$-linear resistivity is observed at pressures slightly above $P_\mathrm{c}$. The scattering rates for both electrons and holes are shown to be approximately $T$-linear. When a field is applied, a $T^2$ dependence is recovered, indicating that the origin of the $T$-linear dependence is spin fluctuations.

Cyclotron resonance and mass enhancement by electron correlation in KFe$_2$As$_2$

Cyclotron resonance (CR) measurements for the Fe-based superconductor KFe$_2$As$_2$ are performed. One signal for CR is observed, and is attributed to the two-dimensional $α$ Fermi surface at the $Γ$ point. We found a large discrepancy in the effective masses of CR [(3.4$\pm$0.05)$m_e$ ($m_e$ is the free electron mass)] and de-Haas van Alphen (dHvA) results, a direct evidence of mass enhancement due to electronic correlation. A comparison of the CR and dHvA results shows that both intra- and interband electronic correlations contribute to the mass enhancement in KFe$_2$As$_2$.

Phase Diagram of Pressure-Induced Superconductivity in EuFe2As2 Probed by High-Pressure Resistivity up to 3.2 GPa

We have constructed a pressure$-$temperature ($P-T$) phase diagram of $P$-induced superconductivity in EuFe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals, via resistivity ($ρ$) measurements up to 3.2 GPa. As hydrostatic pressure is applied, an antiferromagnetic (AF) transition attributed to the FeAs layers at $T_\mathrm{0}$ shifts to lower temperatures, and the corresponding resistive anomaly becomes undetectable for $P$ $\ge$ 2.5 GPa. This suggests that the critical pressure $P_\mathrm{c}$ where $T_\mathrm{0}$ becomes zero is about 2.5 GPa. We have found that the AF order of the Eu$^{2+}$ moments survives up to 3.2 GPa without significant changes in the AF ordering temperature $T_\mathrm{N}$. The superconducting (SC) ground state with a sharp transition to zero resistivity at $T_\mathrm{c}$ $\sim$ 30 K, indicative of bulk superconductivity, emerges in a pressure range from $P_\mathrm{c}$ $\sim$ 2.5 GPa to $\sim$ 3.0 GPa. At pressures close to but outside the SC phase, the $ρ(T)$ curve shows a partial SC transition (i.e., zero resistivity is not attained) followed by a reentrant-like hump at approximately $T_\mathrm{N}$ with decreasing temperature. When nonhydrostatic pressure with a uniaxial-like strain component is applied using a solid pressure medium, the partial superconductivity is continuously observed in a wide pressure range from 1.1 GPa to 3.2 GPa.

Upper Critical Field of Pressure-Induced Superconductor EuFe$_2$As$_2$

We have carried out high-field resistivity measurements up to 27\,T in EuFe$_2$As$_2$ at $P$\,=\,2.5\,GPa, a virtually optimal pressure for the $P$-induced superconductivity, where $T_\mathrm{c}$\,=\,30\,K. The $B_\mathrm{c2}-T_\mathrm{c}$ phase diagram has been constructed in a wide temperature range with a minimum temperature of 1.6 K ($\approx 0.05 \times T_\mathrm{c}$), for both $B \parallel ab$ ($B_\mathrm{c2}^\mathrm{ab}$) and $B \parallel c$ ($B_\mathrm{c2}^\mathrm{c}$). The upper critical fields $B_\mathrm{c2}^\mathrm{ab}$(0) and $B_\mathrm{c2}^\mathrm{c}$(0), determined by the onset of resistive transitions, are 25 T and 22 T, respectively, which are significantly smaller than those of other Fe-based superconductors with similar values of $T_\mathrm{c}$. The small $B_\mathrm{c2}(0)$ values and the $B_\mathrm{c2}(T)$ curves with positive curvature around 20 K can be explained by a multiple pair-breaking model that includes the exchange field due to the magnetic Eu$^{2+}$ moments. The anisotropy parameter, $Γ=B_\mathrm{c2}^{ab}/B_\mathrm{c2}^{c}$, in EuFe$_2$As$_2$ at low temperatures is comparable to that of other "122" Fe-based systems.

Comment on "Quantum Criticality and Nodal Superconductivity in the FeAs-Based Superconductor KFe$_2$As$_2$"

In a recent Letter [J. K. Dong et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 087005 (2010)], Dong \textit{et al}. have observed a $T^{1.5}$ dependence of resistivity $ρ$ in KFe$_2$As$_2$ at the upper critical field $B_{c2}$ = 5 T parallel to the c axis and have suggested the existence of a field-induced quantum critical point (QCP) at $B_{c2}$. In this comment, we argue that observation of a $T^{1.5}$ dependence of $ρ$ in a sample showing broad resistive transitions does not constitute evidence for a QCP and that recent dHvA results do not support the proposed QCP.

Fermi surface and mass enhancement in KFe$_2$As$_2$ from de Haas-van Alphen effect measurements

We report on a band structure calculation and de Haas-van Alphen measurements of KFe$_2$As$_2$. Three cylindrical Fermi surfaces are found. Effective masses of electrons range from 6 to 18$m_e$, $m_e$ being the free electron mass. Remarkable discrepancies between the calculated and observed Fermi surface areas and the large mass enhancement ($\gtrsim 3$) highlight the importance of electronic correlations in determining the electronic structures of iron pnicitide superconductors.

Pressure-Induced Antiferromagnetic Bulk Superconductor EuFe$_2$As$_2$

We present the magnetic and superconducting phase diagram of EuFe$_2$As$_2$ for $B \parallel c$ and $B \parallel ab$. The antiferromagnetic phase of the Eu$^{2+}$ moments is completely enclosed in the superconducting phase. The upper critical field vs. temperature curves exhibit strong concave curvatures, which can be explained by the Jaccarino-Peter compensation effect due to the antiferromagnetic exchange interaction between the Eu$^{2+}$ moments and conduction electrons.
