The Gamma and Strominger-Yau-Zaslow conjectures: a tropical approach to periods

We propose a new method to compute asymptotics of periods using tropical geometry, in which the Riemann zeta values appear naturally as error terms in tropicalization. Our method suggests how the Gamma class should arise from the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow conjecture. We use it to give a new proof of (a version of) the Gamma Conjecture for Batyrev pairs of mirror Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces.

Arnold Conjecture and Morava K-theory

We prove that the rank of the cohomology of a closed symplectic manifold with coefficients in a field of characteristic $p$ is smaller than the number of periodic orbits of any non-degenerate Hamiltonian flow. Following Floer, the proof relies on constructing a homology group associated to each such flow, and comparing it with the homology of the ambient symplectic manifold. The proof does not proceed by constructing a version of Floer's complex with characteristic $p$ coefficients, but uses instead the canonical (stable) complex orientations of moduli spaces of Floer trajectories to construct a version of Floer homology with coefficients in Morava's $K$-theories, and can thus be seen as an implementation of Cohen, Jones, and Segal's vision for a Floer homotopy theory. The key feature of Morava K-theory that allows the construction to be carried out is the fact that the corresponding homology and cohomology groups of classifying spaces of finite groups satisfy Poincaré duality.

Homological mirror symmetry without corrections

Let $X$ be a closed symplectic manifold equipped a Lagrangian torus fibration over a base $Q$. A construction first considered by Kontsevich and Soibelman produces from this data a rigid analytic space $Y$, which can be considered as a variant of the $T$-dual introduced by Strominger, Yau, and Zaslow. We prove that the Fukaya category of tautologically unobstructed graded Lagrangians in $X$ embeds fully faithfully in the derived category of (twisted) coherent sheaves on $Y$, under the technical assumption that $π_2(Q)$ vanishes (all known examples satisfy this assumption). The main new tool is the construction and computation of Floer cohomology groups of Lagrangian fibres equipped with topological infinite rank local systems that correspond, under mirror symmetry, to the affinoid rings introduced by Tate, equipped with their natural topologies as Banach algebras.

Lagrangian fibrations on blowups of toric varieties and mirror symmetry for hypersurfaces

We consider mirror symmetry for (essentially arbitrary) hypersurfaces in (possibly noncompact) toric varieties from the perspective of the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow (SYZ) conjecture. Given a hypersurface $H$ in a toric variety $V$ we construct a Landau-Ginzburg model which is SYZ mirror to the blowup of $V\times\mathbb{C}$ along $H\times 0$, under a positivity assumption. This construction also yields SYZ mirrors to affine conic bundles, as well as a Landau-Ginzburg model which can be naturally viewed as a mirror to $H$. The main applications concern affine hypersurfaces of general type, for which our results provide a geometric basis for various mirror symmetry statements that appear in the recent literature. We also obtain analogous results for complete intersections.

The symplectic arc algebra is formal

We prove a formality theorem for the Fukaya categories of the symplectic manifolds underlying symplectic Khovanov cohomology, over fields of characteristic zero. The key ingredient is the construction of a degree one Hochschild cohomology class on a Floer A-infinity algebra associated to the (k,k)-nilpotent slice Y, obtained by counting holomorphic discs which satisfy a suitable conormal condition at infinity in a partial compactification of Y. The partial compactification is obtained as the Hilbert scheme of a partial compactification of a Milnor fibre. A sequel to this paper will prove formality of the symplectic cup and cap bimodules, and infer that symplectic Khovanov cohomology and Khovanov cohomology have the same total rank over characteristic zero fields.

Family Floer cohomology and mirror symmetry

Ideas of Fukaya and Kontsevich-Soibelman suggest that one can use Strominger-Yau-Zaslow's geometric approach to mirror symmetry as a torus duality to construct the mirror of a symplectic manifold equipped with a Lagrangian torus fibration as a moduli space of simple objects of the Fukaya category supported on the fibres. In the absence of singular fibres, the construction of the mirror is explained in this framework, and, given a Lagrangian submanifold, a (twisted) coherent sheaf on the mirror is constructed.

Homological mirror symmetry for punctured spheres

We prove that the wrapped Fukaya category of a punctured sphere ($S^2$ with an arbitrary number of points removed) is equivalent to the triangulated category of singularities of a mirror Landau-Ginzburg model, proving one side of the homological mirror symmetry conjecture in this case. By investigating fractional gradings on these categories, we conclude that cyclic covers on the symplectic side are mirror to orbifold quotients of the Landau-Ginzburg model.

Symplectic cohomology and Viterbo's theorem

This is a research monograph on symplectic cohomology (disguised as an advanced graduate textbook), which provides a construction of this version of Hamiltonian Floer cohomology for cotangent bundles of closed manifolds. The focus is on the aspects of the theory that have been neglected in the literature: (1) the base is not assumed to be orientable or Spin, (2) local systems on the free loop space are used to define twisted versions of Floer cohomology, (3) a (twisted) Batalin-Vilkovisky structure is constructed, and (4) the BV relation is verified. In this setting (i.e. with all the appropriate twists), a proof of Viterbo's theorem relating symplectic cohomology to the homology of the free loop space is provided, and we show that this map respects the BV structure. Viterbo's theorem is proved by constructing three different maps relating the two sides, and proving that two of the compositions are isomorphisms by using degenerations of moduli spaces of genus 0 Riemann surfaces with boundary. Two of the maps constructed are new, and use ideas inspired by a Lagrangian version of family Floer cohomology.

Exact Lagrangians in plumbings

Consider a Stein manifold M obtained by plumbing cotangent bundles of manifolds of dimension greater than or equal to 3 at points. We prove that the Fukaya category of closed exact Lagrangians with vanishing Maslov class in M is generated by the compact cores of the plumbing. As applications, we classify exact Lagrangian spheres in A2-Milnor fibres of arbitrary dimension, derive constraints on exact Lagrangian fillings of Legendrian unknots in disk cotangent bundles, and prove that the categorical equivalence given by the spherical twist in a homology sphere is typically not realised by any compactly supported symplectomorphism.

Framed bordism and Lagrangian embeddings of exotic spheres

In dimensions congruent to 1 modulo 4, we prove that the cotangent bundle of an exotic sphere which does not bound a parallelisable manifold is not symplectomorphic to the cotangent bundle of the standard sphere. More precisely, we prove that such an exotic sphere cannot embed as a Lagrangian in the cotangent bundle of the standard sphere. The main ingredients of the construction are (1) the fact that the graph of the Hopf fibration embeds the standard sphere, and hence any Lagrangian which embeds in its cotangent bundle, as a displaceable Lagrangian in the product a symplectic vector space of the appropriate dimension with its complex projective space, and (2) a moduli space of solutions to a perturbed Cauchy-Riemann equation introduced by Gromov.

Nearby Lagrangians with vanishing Maslov class are homotopy equivalent

We prove that the inclusion of every closed exact Lagrangian with vanishing Maslov class in a cotangent bundle is a homotopy equivalence. We start by adapting an idea of Fukaya-Seidel-Smith to prove that such a Lagrangian is equivalent to the zero section in the Fukaya category with integral coefficients. We then study an extension of the Fukaya category in which Lagrangians equipped with local systems of arbitrary dimension are admitted as objects, and prove that this extension is generated, in the appropriate sense, by local systems over a cotangent fibre. Whenever the cotangent bundle is simply connected, this generation statement implies that the universal covering of every closed exact Lagrangian of vanishing Maslov index is trivial. Finally, we borrow ideas from coarse geometry to develop a Fukaya category associated to the universal cover, allowing us to prove the result in the general case.

A geometric criterion for generating the Fukaya category

Given a collection of exact Lagrangians in a Liouville manifold, we construct a map from the Hochschild homology of the Fukaya category that they generate to symplectic cohomology. Whenever the identity in symplectic cohomology lies in the image of this map, we conclude that every Lagrangian lies in the idempotent closure of the chosen collection. The main new ingredients are (1) the construction of operations controlled by discs with two outputs on the Fukaya category, and (2) the Cardy relation.

A topological model for the Fukaya categories of plumbings

We prove that the algebra of singular cochains on a smooth manifold, equipped with the cup product, is equivalent to the A-infinity structure on the Lagrangian Floer cochain group associated to the zero section in the cotangent bundle. More generally, given a pair of smooth manifolds of the same dimension with embeddings of a submanifold B with isomorphic normal bundles, we construct a differential graded category from the singular cochains of these spaces, and prove that it is equivalent to the A-infinity category obtained by considering exact Lagrangian embeddings intersecting cleanly along B.

Altering symplectic manifolds by homologous recombination

We use symplectic cohomology to study the non-uniqueness of symplectic structures on the smooth manifolds underlying affine varieties. Starting with a Lefschetz fibration on such a variety and a finite set of primes, the main new tool is a method, which we call homologous recombination, for constructing a Lefschetz fibration whose total space is smoothly equivalent to the original variety, but for which symplectic cohomology with coefficients in the given set of primes vanishes (there is also a simpler version that kills symplectic cohomology completely). Rather than relying on a geometric analysis of periodic orbits of a flow, the computation of symplectic cohomology depends on describing the Fukaya category associated to the new fibration. As a consequence of this and a result of McLean we prove, for example, that an affine variety of real dimension greater than 4 supports infinitely many different (Wein)stein structures of finite type, and, assuming a mild cohomological condition, uncountably many different ones of infinite type. In addition, we introduce a notion of complexity which measures the number of handle attachments required to construct a given Weinstein manifold, and prove that, in dimensions greater than or equal to 12, one may ensure that the infinitely many different Weinstein manifolds smoothly equivalent to a given algebraic variety have bounded complexity.

On the wrapped Fukaya category and based loops

Given an exact relatively Pin Lagrangian embedding Q in a symplectic manifold M, we construct an A-infinity restriction functor from the wrapped Fukaya category of M to the category of modules on the differential graded algebra of chains over the based loop space of Q. If M is the cotangent bundle of Q, this functor induces an A-infinity equivalence between the wrapped Floer cohomology of a cotangent fibre and the chains over the based loop space of Q, extending a result proved by Abbondandolo and Schwarz at the level of homology.

An open string analogue of Viterbo functoriality

Liouville domains are a special type of symplectic manifolds with boundary (they have an everywhere defined Liouville flow, pointing outwards along the boundary). Symplectic cohomology for Liouville domains was introduced by Cieliebak-Floer-Hofer-Wysocki and Vitero. The latter constructed a restriction (or transfer) map associated to an embedding of one Liouville domain into another. In this preprint, we look at exact Lagrangian submanifolds with Legendrian boundary inside a Liouville domain. The analogue of symplectic cohomology for such submanifolds is called "wrapped Floer cohomology". We construct an A_\infty-structure on the underlying wrapped Floer complex, and (under suitable assumptions) an A_\infty-homomorphism realizing the restriction to a Liouville subdomain. The construction of the A_\infty-structure relies on an implementation of homotopy direct limits, and involves some new moduli spaces which are solutions of generalized continuation map equations.
