Global shifted potentials for moduli stacks of sheaves on Calabi-Yau four-folds

It is shown that there are globally defined Lagrangian distributions on the stable loci of derived Quot-stacks of coherent sheaves on Calabi--Yau four-folds. Dividing by these distributions produces perfectly obstructed smooth stacks with globally defined $-1$-shifted potentials, whose derived critical loci give back the stable loci of smooth stacks of sheaves in global Darboux form.

Shifted symplectic structures on derived Quot-stacks I: Differential graded manifolds

A theory of dg schemes is developed so that it becomes a homotopy site, and the corresponding infinity category of stacks is equivalent to the infinity category of stacks, as constructed by Toen and Vezzosi, on the site of dg algebras whose cohomologies have finitely many generators in each degree. Stacks represented by dg schemes are shown to be derived schemes under this correspondence.

Non-commutative counting invariants and curve complexes

In our previous paper, viewing $D^b(K(l))$ as a non-commutative curve, where $K(l)$ is the Kronecker quiver with $l$-arrows, we introduced categorical invariants via counting of non-commutative curves. Roughly, these invariants are sets of subcategories in a given category and their quotients. The non-commutative curve-counting invariants are obtained by restricting the subcategories to be equivalent to $D^b(K(l))$. The general definition defines much larger class of invariants and many of them behave properly with respect to fully faithful functors. Here, after recalling the definition, we focus on examples and extend our studies beyond counting. We enrich our invariants with structures: the inclusion of subcategories makes them partially ordered sets, and considering semi-orthogonal pairs of subcategories as edges amount to directed graphs. In addition to computing the non-commutative curve-counting invariants in $D^b(Q)$ for two affine quivers, for $ A_n$ and $D_4$ we derive formulas for counting of the subcategories of type $D^b(A_k)$ in $D^b(A_n)$, whereas for the two affine quivers and for $D_4$ we determine and count all generated by an exceptional collection subcategories. Estimating the numbers counting non-commutative curves in $D^b({\mathbb P}^2)$ modulo group action we prove finiteness and that an exact determining of these numbers leads to proving (or disproving) of Markov conjecture. Regarding the mentioned structure of a partially ordered set we initiate intersection theory of non-commutative curves. Via the structure of a directed graph we build an analogue to the classical curve complex used in Teichmueller and Thurston theory. The paper contains many pictures of graphs and presents an approach to Markov Conjecture via counting of subgraphs in a graph associated with $D^b(P^2)$. Some of the results proved here were announced in the previous work.

Quantum (Non-commutative) Toric Geometry: Foundations

In this paper, we will introduce Quantum Toric Varieties which are (non-commutative) generalizations of ordinary toric varieties where all the tori of the classical theory are replaced by quantum tori. Quantum toric geometry is the non-commutative version of the classical theory; it generalizes non-trivially most of the theorems and properties of toric geometry. By considering quantum toric varieties as (non-algebraic) stacks, we define their category and show that it is equivalent to a category of quantum fans. We develop a Quantum Geometric Invariant Theory (QGIT) type construction of Quantum Toric Varieties. Unlike classical toric varieties, quantum toric varieties admit moduli and we define their moduli spaces, prove that these spaces are orbifolds and, in favorable cases, up to homotopy, they admit a complex structure.

P=W Phenomena

In this paper, we describe recent work towards the mirror P=W conjecture, which relates the weight filtration on a cohomology of a log Calabi--Yau manifold to the perverse Leray filtration on the cohomology of the homological mirror dual log Calabi--Yau manifold, taken with respect to the affinization map. This conjecture extends the classical relationship between Hodge numbers of mirror dual compact Calabi--Yau manifolds, incorporating tools and ideas which appear in the fascinating and groundbreaking works of de Cataldo, Hausel, and Migliorini, and de Cataldo and Migliorini. We give a broad overview of the motivation for this conjecture, recent results towards it, and describe how this result might arise from the SYZ formulation of mirror symmetry. This interpretation of the mirror P=W conjecture provides a possible bridge between the mirror P=W conjecture and the well-known P=W conjecture in nonabelian Hodge theory.

Symplectic Surgeries Along Certain Singularities and New Lefschetz Fibrations

We define a new 4-dimensional symplectic cut and paste operations arising from the generalized star relations $(t_{a_0}t_{a_1}t_{a_2} \cdots t_{a_{2g+1}})^{2g+1} = t_{b_1} t_{b_2}^{g}t_{b_3}$, also known as the trident relations, in the mapping class group $Γ_{g,3}$ of an orientable surface of genus $g\geq1$ with $3$ boundary components. We also construct new families of Lefschetz fibrations by applying the (generalized) star relations and the chain relations to the families of words $(t_{c_1}t_{c_2} \cdots t_{c_{2g-1}}t_{c_{2g}}t_{c_{2g+1}}^2t_{c_{2g}}t_{c_{2g-1}} \cdots t_{c_2}t_{c_1})^{2n} = 1$, $(t_{c_1}t_{c_2} \cdots t_{c_{2g}}t_{c_{2g+1}})^{(2g+2)n} = 1$ and $(t_{c_1}t_{c_2} \cdots t_{c_{2g-1}}t_{c_{2g}})^{2(2g+1)n} = 1$ in the mapping class group $Γ_{g}$ of the closed orientable surface of genus $g \geq 1$ and $n \geq 1$. Furthemore, we show that the total spaces of some of these Lefschetz fibraions are irreducible exotic symplectic $4$-manifolds. Using the degenerate cases of the generalized star relations, we also realize all elliptic Lefschetz fibrations and genus two Lefschetz fibrations over $\mathbb{S}^{2}$ with non-separating vanishing cycles.

Towards Mirror Symmetry for Varieties of General Type

The goal of this paper is to propose a theory of mirror symmetry for varieties of general type. Using Landau-Ginzburg mirrors as motivation, we describe the mirror of a hypersurface of general type (and more generally varieties of non-negative Kodaira dimension) as the critical locus of the zero fibre of a certain Landau-Ginzburg potential. The critical locus carries a perverse sheaf of vanishing cycles. Our main results shows that one obtains the interchange of Hodge numbers expected in mirror symmetry. This exchange is between the Hodge numbers of the hypersurface and certain Hodge numbers defined using a mixed Hodge structure on the hypercohomology of the perverse sheaf. This exchange can be anticipated from an analysis of Hochschild homology of the relevant categories arising in homological mirror symmetry in this case; we also conjecture that a similar, but different, exchange of dimensions arises from Hochschild cohomology, relating the cohomology of sheaves of polyvector fields on the hypersurface to the cohomology of the critical locus.

Constructing Buildings and Harmonic Maps

In a continuation of our previous work, we outline a theory which should lead to the construction of a universal pre-building and versal building with a $ϕ$-harmonic map from a Riemann surface, in the case of two-dimensional buildings for the group $SL_3$. This will provide a generalization of the space of leaves of the foliation defined by a quadratic differential in the classical theory for $SL_2$. Our conjectural construction would determine the exponents for $SL_3$ WKB problems, and it can be put into practice on examples.

Flat surfaces and stability structures

We identify spaces of half-translation surfaces, equivalently complex curves with quadratic differential, with spaces of stability structures on Fukaya-type categories of punctured surfaces. This is achieved by new methods involving the complete classification of objects in these categories, which are defined in an elementary way. We also introduce a number of tools to deal with surfaces of infinite area, where structures similar to those in cluster algebra appear.

Lagrangian fibrations on blowups of toric varieties and mirror symmetry for hypersurfaces

We consider mirror symmetry for (essentially arbitrary) hypersurfaces in (possibly noncompact) toric varieties from the perspective of the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow (SYZ) conjecture. Given a hypersurface $H$ in a toric variety $V$ we construct a Landau-Ginzburg model which is SYZ mirror to the blowup of $V\times\mathbb{C}$ along $H\times 0$, under a positivity assumption. This construction also yields SYZ mirrors to affine conic bundles, as well as a Landau-Ginzburg model which can be naturally viewed as a mirror to $H$. The main applications concern affine hypersurfaces of general type, for which our results provide a geometric basis for various mirror symmetry statements that appear in the recent literature. We also obtain analogous results for complete intersections.

Symplectomorphism group relations and degenerations of Landau-Ginzburg models

In this paper, we describe explicit relations in the symplectomorphism groups of toric hypersurfaces. To define the elements involved, we construct a proper stack of toric hypersurfaces with compactifying boundary representing toric hypersurface degenerations. Our relations arise through the study of the one dimensional strata of this stack. The results are then examined from the perspective of homological mirror symmetry where we view sequences of relations as maximal degenerations of Landau-Ginzburg models. We then study the B-model mirror to these degenerations, which gives a new mirror symmetry approach to the minimal model program.

A category of kernels for equivariant factorizations and its implications for Hodge theory

We provide a factorization model for the continuous internal Hom, in the homotopy category of $k$-linear dg-categories, between dg-categories of equivariant factorizations. This motivates a notion, similar to that of Kuznetsov, which we call the extended Hochschild cohomology algebra of the category of equivariant factorizations. In some cases of geometric interest, extended Hochschild cohomology contains Hochschild cohomology as a subalgebra and Hochschild homology as a homogeneous component. We use our factorization model for the internal Hom to calculate the extended Hochschild cohomology for equivariant factorizations on affine space. Combining the computation of extended Hochschild cohomology with the Hochschild-Kostant-Rosenberg isomorphism and a theorem of Orlov recovers and extends Griffiths' classical description of the primitive cohomology of a smooth, complex projective hypersurface in terms of homogeneous pieces of the Jacobian algebra. In the process, the primitive cohomology is identified with the fixed subspace of the cohomological endomorphism associated to an interesting endofunctor of the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on the hypersurface. We also demonstrate how to understand the whole Jacobian algebra as morphisms between kernels of endofunctors of the derived category. Finally, we present a bootstrap method for producing algebraic cycles in categories of equivariant factorizations. As proof of concept, we show how this reproves the Hodge conjecture for all self-products of a particular K3 surface closely related to the Fermat cubic fourfold.

A category of kernels for equivariant factorizations, II: further implications

We leverage the results of the prequel in combination with a theorem of D. Orlov to yield some results in Hodge theory of derived categories of factorizations and derived categories of coherent sheaves on varieties. In particular, we provide a conjectural geometric framework to further understand M. Kontsevich's Homological Mirror Symmetry conjecture. We obtain new cases of a conjecture of Orlov concerning the Rouquier dimension of the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on a smooth variety. Further, we introduce actions of $A$-graded commutative rings on triangulated categories and their associated Noether-Lefschetz spectra as a new invariant of triangulated categories. They are intended to encode information about algebraic classes in the cohomology of an algebraic variety. We provide some examples to motivate the connection.

Birational geometry via moduli spaces

In this paper we connect degenerations of Fano threefolds by projections. Using Mirror Symmetry we transfer these connections to the side of Landau--Ginzburg models. Based on that we suggest a generalization of Kawamata's categorical approach to birational geometry enhancing it via geometry of moduli spaces of Landau--Ginzburg models. We suggest a conjectural application to Hasset--Kuznetsov--Tschinkel program based on new nonrationality "invariants" we consider --- gaps and phantom categories. We make several conjectures for these invariants in the case of surfaces of general type and quadric bundles.

Bogomolov-Tian-Todorov theorems for Landau-Ginzburg models

In this paper we prove the smoothness of the moduli space of Landau-Ginzburg models. We formulate and prove a Tian-Todorov theorem for the deformations of Landau-Ginzburg models, develop the necessary Hodge theory for varieties with potentials, and prove a double degeneration statement needed for the unobstructedness result. We discuss the various definitions of Hodge numbers for non-commutative Hodge structures of Landau-Ginzburg type and the role they play in mirror symmetry. We also interpret the resulting families of de Rham complexes attacted to a potential in terms of mirror symmetry for one parameter families of symplectic Fano manifolds and argue that modulo a natural triviality property the moduli spaces of Landau-Ginzburg models posses canonical special coordinates.

Bridgeland stability conditions on the acyclic triangular quiver

Using results in a previous paper "Non-semistable exceptional objects in hereditary categories", we focus here on studying the topology of the space of Bridgeland stability conditions on $D^b(Rep_k(Q ))$, where $Q$ is the acyclic triangular quiver (the underlying graph is the extended Dynkin diagram $\widetilde{\mathbb A}_2$). In particular, we prove that this space is contractible (in the previous paper it was shown that it is connected).

Compactifications of spaces of Landau-Ginzburg models

This paper reviews results and techniques from the authors' previous work "Symplectomorphism group relations and degenerations of Landau-Ginzburg models" and applies them in basic examples. The main example is the $A_n$ category where we observe a relationship to stability conditions and directed quiver representations. We conclude with a brief survey of applications to the birational geometry of del Pezzo surfaces.

Double solids, categories and non-rationality

This paper suggests a new approach to questions of rationality of threefolds based on category theory. Following M. Ballard, D. Favero, L. Katzarkov (ArXiv:1012.0864) and D. Favero, L. Katzarkov (Noether--Lefschetz Spectra and Algebraic cycles, in preparation) we enhance constructions from A. Kuznetsov (arXiv:0904.4330) by introducing Noether--Lefschetz spectra --- an interplay between Orlov spectra (C. Oliva, Algebraic cycles and Hodge theory on generalized Reye congruences, Compos. Math. 92, No. 1 (1994) 1--22) and Hochschild homology. The main goal of this paper is to suggest a series of interesting examples where above techniques might apply. We start by constructing a sextic double solid $X$ with 35 nodes and torsion in $H^3(X,\mathbb Z)$. This is a novelty --- after the classical example of Artin and Mumford (1972), this is the second example of a Fano threefold with a torsion in the 3-rd integer homology group. In particular $X$ is non-rational. We consider other examples as well --- $V_{10}$ with 10 singular points and double covering of quadric ramified in octic with 20 nodal singular points. After analyzing the geometry of their Landau--Ginzburg models we suggest a general non-rationality picture based on Homological Mirror Symmetry and category theory.

Homological mirror symmetry for punctured spheres

We prove that the wrapped Fukaya category of a punctured sphere ($S^2$ with an arbitrary number of points removed) is equivalent to the triangulated category of singularities of a mirror Landau-Ginzburg model, proving one side of the homological mirror symmetry conjecture in this case. By investigating fractional gradings on these categories, we conclude that cyclic covers on the symplectic side are mirror to orbifold quotients of the Landau-Ginzburg model.

Homological Projective Duality via Variation of Geometric Invariant Theory Quotients

We provide a geometric approach to constructing Lefschetz collections and Landau-Ginzburg Homological Projective Duals from a variation of Geometric Invariant Theory quotients. This approach yields homological projective duals for Veronese embeddings in the setting of Landau Ginzburg models. Our results also extend to a relative Homological Projective Duality framework.

Landau-Ginzburg models -- old and new

In the last three years a new concept -- the concept of wall crossing has emerged. The current situation with wall crossing phenomena, after papers of Seiberg-Witten, Gaiotto-Moore-Neitzke, Vafa-Cecoti and seminal works by Donaldson-Thomas, Joyce-Song, Maulik-Nekrasov-Okounkov-Pandharipande, Douglas, Bridgeland, and Kontsevich-Soibelman, is very similar to the situation with Higgs Bundles after the works of Higgs and Hitchin -- it is clear that a general "Hodge type" of theory exists and needs to be developed. Nonabelian Hodge theory did lead to strong mathematical applications -- uniformization, Langlands program to mention a few. In the wall crossing is is also clear that some "Hodge type" of theory exists -- Stability Hodge Structure (SHS). This theory needs to be developed in order to reap some mathematical benefits --- solve long standing problems in algebraic geometry. In this paper we look at SHS from the perspective of Landau--Ginzburg models and we look at some applications. We consider simple examples and explain some conjectures these examples suggest.

On the Derived Categories of Degree d Hypersurface Fibrations

We provide descriptions of the derived categories of degree $d$ hypersurface fibrations which generalize a result of Kuznetsov for quadric fibrations and give a relative version of a well-known theorem of Orlov. Using a local generator and Morita theory, we re-interpret the resulting matrix factorization category as a derived-equivalent sheaf of dg-algebras on the base. Then, applying homological perturbation methods, we obtain a sheaf of $A_\infty$-algebras which gives a new description of homological projective duals for (relative) $d$-Veronese embeddings, recovering the sheaf of Clifford algebras obtained by Kuznetsov in the case when $d=2$.

Resolutions in factorization categories

Generalizing Eisenbud's matrix factorizations, we define factorization categories. Following work of Positselski, we define their associated derived categories. We construct specific resolutions of factorizations built from a choice of resolutions of their components. We use these resolutions to lift fully-faithfulness statements from derived categories of Abelian categories to derived categories of factorizations and to construct a spectral sequence computing the morphism spaces in the derived categories of factorizations from Ext-groups of their components in the underlying Abelian category.

Variation of geometric invariant theory quotients and derived categories

We study the relationship between derived categories of factorizations on gauged Landau-Ginzburg models related by variations of the linearization in Geometric Invariant Theory. Under assumptions on the variation, we show the derived categories are comparable by semi-orthogonal decompositions and describe the complementary components. We also verify a question posed by Kawamata: we show that $D$-equivalence and $K$-equivalence coincide for such variations. The results are applied to obtain a simple inductive description of derived categories of coherent sheaves on projective toric Deligne-Mumford stacks. This recovers Kawamata's theorem that all projective toric Deligne-Mumford stacks have full exceptional collections. Using similar methods, we prove that the Hassett moduli spaces of stable symmetrically-weighted rational curves also possess full exceptional collections. As a final application, we show how our results recover Orlov's $σ$-model/Landau-Ginzburg model correspondence.

Harmonic Maps to Buildings and Singular Perturbation Theory

The notion of a universal building associated with a point in the Hitchin base is introduced. This is a building equipped with a harmonic map from a Riemann surface that is initial among harmonic maps which induce the given cameral cover of the Riemann surface. In the rank one case, the universal building is the leaf space of the quadratic differential defining the point in the Hitchin base. The main conjectures of this paper are: (1) the universal building always exists; (2) the harmonic map to the universal building controls the asymptotics of the Riemann-Hilbert correspondence and the non-abelian Hodge correspondence; (3) the singularities of the universal building give rise to Spectral Networks; and (4) the universal building encodes the data of a 3d Calabi-Yau category whose space of stability conditions has a connected component that contains the Hitchin base. The main theorem establishes the existence of the universal building, conjecture (3), as well as the Riemann-Hilbert part of conjecture (2), in the case of the rank two example introduced in the seminal work of Berk-Nevins-Roberts on higher order Stokes phenomena. It is also shown that the asymptotics of the Riemann-Hilbert correspondence is always controlled by a harmonic map to a certain building, which is constructed as the asymptotic cone of a symmetric space.

Minifolds and Phantoms

A minifold is a smooth projective $n$-dimensional variety such that its bounded derived category of coherent sheaves $\D^b(X)$ admits a semi-orthogonal decomposition into an exceptional collection of $n+1$ exceptional objects. In this paper we classify minifolds of dimension $n \leq 4$. We conjecture that the derived category of fake projective spaces have a similar semi-orthogonal decomposition into a collection of $n+1$ exceptional objects and a category with vanishing Hochschild homology. We prove this for fake projective planes with non-abelian automorphism group. We construct new examples of phantom categories with both Hochschild homology and Grothendieck group vanishing.

Non-commutative Toric Varieties

In this note we introduce a new family of non-commutative spaces that we call non-commutative toric varieties and we describe some of their main properties. The main technical tool in this investigation is a natural extension of LVM-theory for the irrational case. In order to introduce the moduli space of (non-commutative) toric varieties we use variations on the notion of diffeology as models for non-commutative spaces.

Non-semistable exceptional objects in hereditary categories

For a given stability condition $σ$ on a triangulated category we define a $σ$-exceptional collection as an Ext-exceptional collection, whose elements are $σ$-semistable with phases contained in an open interval of length one. If there exists a full $σ$-exceptional collection, then $σ$ is generated by this collection in a procedure described by E. Macrì. Constructing $σ$-exceptional collections of length at least three in $D^b(\mathcal A)$ from a non-semistable exceptional object, where $\mathcal A$ is a hereditary hom-finite abelian category, we introduce certain conditions on the Ext-nontrivial couples (couples of exceptional objects $X,Y\in \mathcal A$ with ${\rm Ext}^1(X,Y)\neq 0$ and ${\rm Ext}^1(Y,X)\neq 0$). After a detailed study of the exceptional objects of two tame quivers $Q_1$ and $Q_2$ with three and four vertices, respectively, we observe that the needed conditions do hold in $Rep_k(Q_1)$, $Rep_k(Q_2)$, where $k$ is an algebraically closed field. Combining these findings, we prove that for each $σ\in {\rm Stab}(D^b(Q_1))$ there exists a full $σ$-exceptional collection. It follows that ${\rm Stab}(D^b(Q_1))$ is connected.

Orlov spectra: bounds and gaps

The Orlov spectrum is a new invariant of a triangulated category. It was introduced by D. Orlov building on work of A. Bondal-M. van den Bergh and R. Rouquier. The supremum of the Orlov spectrum of a triangulated category is called the ultimate dimension. In this work, we study Orlov spectra of triangulated categories arising in mirror symmetry. We introduce the notion of gaps and outline their geometric significance. We provide the first large class of examples where the ultimate dimension is finite: categories of singularities associated to isolated hypersurface singularities. Similarly, given any nonzero object in the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on a smooth Calabi-Yau hypersurface, we produce a new generator by closing the object under a certain monodromy action and uniformly bound this new generator's generation time. In addition, we provide new upper bounds on the generation times of exceptional collections and connect generation time to braid group actions to provide a lower bound on the ultimate dimension of the derived Fukaya category of a symplectic surface of genus greater than one.

The Mori Program and Non-Fano Toric Homological Mirror Symmetry

In the case of toric varieties, we continue the pursuit of Kontsevich's fundamental insight, Homological Mirror Symmetry, by unifying it with the Mori program. We give a refined conjectural version of Homological Mirror Symmetry relating semi-orthogonal decompositions of the $B$-model on toric varieties to semi-orthogonal decompositions on the $A$-model on the mirror Landau-Ginzburg models. As evidence, we prove a new case of Homological Mirror Symmetry for a toric surface whose anticanonical bundle is not nef, namely a certain blow-up of $¶^2$ at three infinitesimally near points.

On the Griffiths Groups of Fano Manifolds of Calabi-Yau Hodge Type

A deep result of Voisin asserts that the Griffiths group of a general non-rigid Calabi-Yau (CY) 3-fold is infinitely generated. This theorem builds on an earlier method of hers which was implemented by Albano and Collino to prove the same result for a general cubic sevenfold. In fact, Voisin's method can be utilized precisely because the variation of Hodge structure on a cubic 7-fold behaves just like the variation of Hodge structure of a Calabi-Yau 3-fold. We explain this relationship concretely using Kontsevitch's noncommutative geometry. Namely, we show that for a cubic 7-fold, there is a noncommutative CY 3-fold which has an isomorphic Griffiths group. Similarly, one can consider other examples of Fano manifolds with with the same type of variation of Hodge structure as a Calabi-Yau threefold (FCYs). Among the complete intersections in weighted projective spaces, there are only three classes of smooth FCY manifolds; the cubic 7-fold, the fivefold quartic double solid, and the fivefold intersection of a quadric and a cubic. We settle the two remaining cases, following Voisin's method to demonstrate that the Griffiths group for a smooth general complete intersection FCY manifolds, is also infinitely generated. In the case of the fivefold quartic double solid, we also show that there is a noncommutative CY 3-fold with an isomorphic Griffiths group. Finally, for the fivefold intersection of a quadric and a cubic there is a noncommutative CY 3-fold, such that the Griffiths group of the intersection surjects on to the Griffiths group of noncommutative 3-fold. We finish by discussing some examples of noncommutative covers which relate our noncommutative CYs back to honest algebraic varieties such as products of elliptic curves and K3-surfaces.

Singular Lefschetz pencils

We consider structures analogous to symplectic Lefschetz pencils in the context of a closed 4-manifold equipped with a `near-symplectic' structure (ie, a closed 2-form which is symplectic outside a union of circles where it vanishes transversely). Our main result asserts that, up to blowups, every near-symplectic 4-manifold (X,omega) can be decomposed into (a) two symplectic Lefschetz fibrations over discs, and (b) a fibre bundle over S^1 which relates the boundaries of the Lefschetz fibrations to each other via a sequence of fibrewise handle additions taking place in a neighbourhood of the zero set of the 2-form. Conversely, from such a decomposition one can recover a near-symplectic structure.
