Bernstein-gamma functions and exponential functionals of Levy Processes

We study the equation $M_Ψ(z+1)=\frac{-z}{Ψ(-z)}M_Ψ(z), M_Ψ(1)=1$ defined on a subset of the imaginary line and where $Ψ$ is a negative definite functions. Using the Wiener-Hopf method we solve this equation in a two terms product which consists of functions that extend the classical gamma function. These functions are in a bijection with Bernstein functions and for this reason we call them Bernstein-gamma functions. Via a couple of computable parameters we characterize of these functions as meromorphic functions on a complex strip. We also establish explicit and universal Stirling type asymptotic in terms of the constituting Bernstein function. The decay of $|M_Ψ(z)|$ along imaginary lines is computed. Important quantities for theoretical and applied studies are rendered accessible. As an application we investigate the exponential functionals of Levy Processes whose Mellin transform satisfies the recurrent equation above. Although these variables have been intensively studied, our new perspective, based on a combination of probabilistic and complex analytical techniques, enables us to derive comprehensive and substantial properties and strengthen several results on the law of these random variables. These include smoothness, regularity and analytical properties, large and small asymptotic behaviour, including asymptotic expansions, bounds, and Mellin-Barnes representations for the density and its successive derivatives. We also study the weak convergence of exponential functionals on a finite time horizon when the latter expands to infinity. As a result of new factorizations of the law of the exponential functional we deliver important intertwining relation between members of the class of positive self-similar semigroups. The derivation of our results relies on a mixture of complex-analytical and probabilistic techniques.

Extinction time of non-Markovian self-similar processes, persistence, annihilation of jumps and the Fréchet distribution

We start by providing an explicit characterization and analytical properties, including the persistence phenomena, of the distribution of the extinction time $\mathbb{T}$ of a class of non-Markovian self-similar stochastic processes with two-sided jumps that we introduce as a stochastic time-change of Markovian self-similar processes. For a suitably chosen time-changed, we observe, for classes with two-sided jumps, the following surprising facts. On the one hand, all the $\mathbb{T}$'s within a class have the same law which we identify in a simple form for all classes and reduces, in the spectrally positive case, to the Fréchet distribution. On the other hand, each of its distribution corresponds to the law of an extinction time of a single Markov process without positive jumps, leaving the interpretation that the time-changed has annihilated the effect of positive jumps. The example of the non-Markovian processes associated to Lévy stable processes is detailed.

Intertwining, Excursion Theory and Krein Theory of Strings for Non-self-adjoint Markov Semigroups

In this paper, we start by showing that the intertwining relationship between two minimal Markov semigroups acting on Hilbert spaces implies that any recurrent extensions, in the sense of Itô, of these semigroups satisfy the same intertwining identity. Under mild additional assumptions on the intertwining operator, we prove that the converse also holds. This connection, which relies on the representation of excursion quantities as developed by Fitzsimmons and Getoor, enables us to give an interesting probabilistic interpretation of intertwining relationships between Markov semigroups via excursion theory: two such recurrent extensions that intertwine share, under an appropriate normalization, the same local time at the boundary point. Moreover, in the case when one of the (non-self-adjoint) semigroup intertwines with the one of a quasi-diffusion, we obtain an extension of Krein's theory of strings byshowing that its densely defined spectral measure is absolutely continuous with respect to the measure appearing in the Stieltjes representation of the Laplace exponent of the inverse local time. Finally, we illustrate our results with the class of positive self-similar Markov semigroups and also the reflected generalized Laguerre semigroups. For the latter, we obtain their spectral decomposition and provide, under some conditions, a perturbed spectral gap estimate for its convergence to equilibrium.

Cauchy Problem of the non-self-adjoint Gauss-Laguerre semigroups and uniform bounds of generalized Laguerre polynomials

We propose a new approach to construct the eigenvalue expansion in a weighted Hilbert space of the solution to the Cauchy problem associated to Gauss-Laguerre invariant Markov semigroups that we introduce. Their generators turn out to be natural non-self-adjoint and non-local generalizations of the Laguerre differential operator. Our methods rely on intertwining relations that we establish between these semigroups and the classical Laguerre semigroup and combine with techniques based on non-harmonic analysis. As a by-product we also provide regularity properties for the semigroups as well as for their heat kernels. The biorthogonal sequences that appear in their eigenvalue expansion can be expressed in terms of sequences of polynomials, and they generalize the Laguerre polynomials. By means of a delicate saddle point method, we derive uniform asymptotic bounds that allow us to get an upper bound for their norms in weighted Hilbert spaces. We believe that this work opens a way to construct spectral expansions for more general non-self-adjoint Markov semigroups.

Spectral expansions of non-self-adjoint generalized Laguerre semigroups

We provide the spectral expansion in a weighted Hilbert space of a substantial class of invariant non-self-adjoint and non-local Markov operators which appear in limit theorems for positive-valued Markov processes. We show that this class is in bijection with a subset of negative definite functions and we name it the class of generalized Laguerre semigroups. Our approach, which goes beyond the framework of perturbation theory, is based on an in-depth and original analysis of an intertwining relation that we establish between this class and a self-adjoint Markov semigroup, whose spectral expansion is expressed in terms of the classical Laguerre polynomials. As a by-product, we derive smoothness properties for the solution to the associated Cauchy problem as well as for the heat kernel. Our methodology also reveals a variety of possible decays, including the hypocoercivity type phenomena, for the speed of convergence to equilibrium for this class and enables us to provide an interpretation of these in terms of the rate of growth of the weighted Hilbert space norms of the spectral projections. Depending on the analytic properties of the aforementioned negative definite functions, we are led to implement several strategies, which require new developments in a variety of contexts, to derive precise upper bounds for these norms.

Conditional survival distributions of Brownian trajectories in a one dimensional Poissonian environment in the critical case

In this work we consider a one-dimensional Brownian motion with constant drift moving among a Poissonian cloud of obstacles. Our main result proves convergence of the law of processes conditional on survival up to time $t$ as $t$ converges to infinity in the critical case where the drift coincides with the intensity of the Poisson process. The complements a previous result of T. Povel, who considered the same question in the case where the drift is strictly smaller than the intensity.

On the Range of Subordinators

In this note we look into detail at the box-counting dimension of subordinators. Given that $X$ is a non-decreasing Levy process, which is not a compound Poisson process, we show that in the limit, the minimum number of boxes of size $δ$ that cover the range of $(X_s)_{s\leq t}$ is a.s. of order $t/U(δ)$, where $U$ is the potential function of $X$. This is a more refined result than the lower and upper index of the box-counting dimension computed in the literature which deals with the asymptotic number of boxes at logarithmic scale.

Transience and recurrence of a Brownian path with limited local time and its repulsion envelope

In this note we investigate the behaviour of Brownian motion conditioned on a growth constraint of its local time which has been previously investigated by Berestycki and Benjamini. For a class of non-decreasing positive functions $f(t); t>0$, we consider the Wiener measure under the condition that the Brownian local time is dominated by the function f up to time T. In the case where $f(t)/t^{3/2}$ is integrable we describe the limiting process as T goes to infinity. Moreover, we prove two conjectures in [BB10] in the case for a class of functions f, for which $f(t)/t^{3/2}$ just fails to be integrable. Our methodology is more general as it relies on the study of the asymptotic of the probability of subordinators to stay above a given curve. Immediately or with adaptations one can study questions like the Brownian motioned conditioned on a growth constraint of its local time at the maximum or more generally a Levy process conditioned on a growth constraint of its local time at the maximum or at zero. We discuss briefly the former.

Fluctuation Limits of a locally regulated population and generalized Langevin equations

We consider a locally regulated spatial population model introduced by Bolker and Pacala. Based on the deterministic approximation studied by Fournier and Méléard, we prove that the fluctuation theorem holds under some mild moment conditions. The limiting process is shown to be an infinite-dimensional Gaussian process solving a generalized Langevin equation. In particular, we further consider its properties in one-dimension case, which is characterized as a time-inhomogeneous Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process.

A Wiener-Hopf Type Factorization for the Exponential Functional of Levy Processes

For a Lévy process $ξ=(ξ_t)_{t\geq0}$ drifting to $-\infty$, we define the so-called exponential functional as follows \[{\rm{I}}_ξ=\int_0^{\infty}e^{ξ_t} dt.\] Under mild conditions on $ξ$, we show that the following factorization of exponential functionals \[{\rm{I}}_ξ\stackrel{d}={\rm{I}}_{H^-} \times {\rm{I}}_{Y}\] holds, where, $\times $ stands for the product of independent random variables, $H^-$ is the descending ladder height process of $ξ$ and $Y$ is a spectrally positive Lévy process with a negative mean constructed from its ascending ladder height process. As a by-product, we generate an integral or power series representation for the law of ${\rm{I}}_ξ$ for a large class of Lévy processes with two-sided jumps and also derive some new distributional properties. The proof of our main result relies on a fine Markovian study of a class of generalized Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes which is of independent interest on its own. We use and refine an alternative approach of studying the stationary measure of a Markov process which avoids some technicalities and difficulties that appear in the classical method of employing the generator of the dual Markov process.

First passage times of Lévy processes over a one-sided moving boundary

We study the asymptotic behaviour of the tail of the distribution of the first passage time of a Lévy process over a one-sided moving boundary. Our main result states that if the boundary behaves as $t^γ$ for large $t$ for some $γ<1/2$ then the probability that the process stays below the boundary behaves asymptotically as in the case of a constant boundary. We do not have to assume Spitzer's condition in contrast to all previously known results. Both positive ($+t^γ$) and negative ($-t^γ$) boundaries are considered. These results extend the findings of Greenwood and Novikov (1986) and are also motivated by results in the case of Brownian motion, for which the above result was proved in Uchiyama (1980).

Extended Factorizations of Exponential Functionals of Lévy Processes

In [16], under mild conditions, a Wiener-Hopf type factorization is derived for the exponential functional of proper Lévy processes. In this paper, we extend this factorization by relaxing a finite moment assumption as well as by considering the exponential functional for killed Lévy processes. As a by-product, we derive some interesting new distributional properties enjoyed by a large class of this random variable, such as the absolute continuity of its distribution and the smoothness, boundedness or complete monotonicity of its density. This type of results is then used to derive similar properties for the law of maxima and first passage time of some stable Lévy processes. Thus, for example, we show that for a large class of stable processes the first passage time has a bounded and non-increasing density on the positive half-line. We also generate many instances of integral or power series representations for the law of the exponential functional of Lévy processes with one or two-sided jumps. The proof of our main results requires different devices from the one developed in [16]. It relies in particular on a generalization of a transform recently introduced in [8] together with some extensions to killed Lévy process of Wiener-Hopf techniques.

Geometric Ergodicity of a Hypoelliptic Diffusion Modelling The Melt-Spinning Process of Nonwoven Materials

We analyze the large time behavior of a stochastic model for the lay-down of fibers on a conveyor belt in the production process of nonwovens. It is shown, that under weak conditions this degenerate diffusion process is strong mixing, confirming a conjecture of Grothaus and Klar. Moreover, under some additional assumptions even geometric ergodicity is established using probabilistic tools -- described in the book of Meyn and Tweedie -- in combination with methods from stochastic analysis.

Right inverses of Levy processes: the excursion measure in the general case

This article is about right inverses of Levy processes as first introduced by Evans in the symmetric case and later studied systematically by the present authors and their co-authors. Here we add to the existing fluctuation theory an explicit description of the excursion measure away from the (minimal) right inverse. This description unifies known formulas in the case of a positive Gaussian coefficient and in the bounded variation case. While these known formulas relate to excursions away from a point starting negative continuously, and excursions started by a jump, the present description is in terms of excursions away from the supremum continued up to a return time. In the unbounded variation case with zero Gaussian coefficient previously excluded, excursions start negative continuously, but the excursion measures away from the right inverse and away from a point are mutually singular. We also provide a new construction and a new formula for the Laplace exponent of the minimal right inverse.

Some applications of duality for Lévy processes in a half-line

The central result of this paper is an analytic duality relation for real-valued Lévy processes killed upon exiting a half-line. By Nagasawa's theorem, this yields a remarkable time-reversal identity involving the Lévy process conditioned to stay positive. As examples of applications, we construct a version of the Lévy process indexed by the entire real line and started from $-\infty$ which enjoys a natural spatial-stationarity property, and point out that the latter leads to a natural Lamperti-type representation for self-similar Markov processes in $(0,\infty)$ started from the entrance point 0+.
