Persistence of autoregressive sequences with logarithmic tails

We consider autoregressive sequences $X_n=aX_{n-1}+ξ_n$ and $M_n=\max\{aM_{n-1},ξ_n\}$ with a constant $a\in(0,1)$ and with positive, independent and identically distributed innovations $\{ξ_k\}$. It is known that if $\mathbf P(ξ_1>x)\sim\frac{d}{\log x}$ with some $d\in(0,-\log a)$ then the chains $\{X_n\}$ and $\{M_n\}$ are null recurrent. We investigate the tail behaviour of recurrence times in this case of logarithmically decaying tails. More precisely, we show that the tails of recurrence times are regularly varying of index $-1-d/\log a$. We also prove limit theorems for $\{X_n\}$ and $\{M_n\}$ conditioned to stay over a fixed level $x_0$. Furthermore, we study tail asymptotics for recurrence times of $\{X_n\}$ and $\{M_n\}$ in the case when these chains are positive recurrent and the tail of $\logξ_1$ is subexponential.

Spectral analysis of the diffusion operator with random jumps from the boundary

Using an operator-theoretic framework in a Hilbert-space setting, we perform a detailed spectral analysis of the one-dimensional Laplacian in a bounded interval, subject to specific non-self-adjoint connected boundary conditions modelling a random jump from the boundary to a point inside the interval. In accordance with previous works, we find that all the eigenvalues are real. As the new results, we derive and analyse the adjoint operator, determine the geometric and algebraic multiplicities of the eigenvalues, write down formulae for the eigenfunctions together with the generalised eigenfunctions and study their basis properties. It turns out that the latter heavily depend on whether the distance of the interior point to the centre of the interval divided by the length of the interval is rational or irrational. Finally, we find a closed formula for the metric operator that provides a similarity transform of the problem to a self-adjoint operator.

Conditional survival distributions of Brownian trajectories in a one dimensional Poissonian environment in the critical case

In this work we consider a one-dimensional Brownian motion with constant drift moving among a Poissonian cloud of obstacles. Our main result proves convergence of the law of processes conditional on survival up to time $t$ as $t$ converges to infinity in the critical case where the drift coincides with the intensity of the Poisson process. The complements a previous result of T. Povel, who considered the same question in the case where the drift is strictly smaller than the intensity.

Transience and recurrence of a Brownian path with limited local time and its repulsion envelope

In this note we investigate the behaviour of Brownian motion conditioned on a growth constraint of its local time which has been previously investigated by Berestycki and Benjamini. For a class of non-decreasing positive functions $f(t); t>0$, we consider the Wiener measure under the condition that the Brownian local time is dominated by the function f up to time T. In the case where $f(t)/t^{3/2}$ is integrable we describe the limiting process as T goes to infinity. Moreover, we prove two conjectures in [BB10] in the case for a class of functions f, for which $f(t)/t^{3/2}$ just fails to be integrable. Our methodology is more general as it relies on the study of the asymptotic of the probability of subordinators to stay above a given curve. Immediately or with adaptations one can study questions like the Brownian motioned conditioned on a growth constraint of its local time at the maximum or more generally a Levy process conditioned on a growth constraint of its local time at the maximum or at zero. We discuss briefly the former.

Quasilimiting behavior for one-dimensional diffusions with killing

This paper extends and clarifies results of Steinsaltz and Evans [Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 359 (2007) 1285-1234], which found conditions for convergence of a killed one-dimensional diffusion conditioned on survival, to a quasistationary distribution whose density is given by the principal eigenfunction of the generator. Under the assumption that the limit of the killing at infinity differs from the principal eigenvalue we prove that convergence to quasistationarity occurs if and only if the principal eigenfunction is integrable. When the killing at infinity is larger than the principal eigenvalue, then the eigenfunction is always integrable. When the killing at infinity is smaller, the eigenfunction is integrable only when the unkilled process is recurrent; otherwise, the process conditioned on survival converges to 0 density on any bounded interval.

The rate of convergence to stationarity for M/G/1 models with admission controls via coupling

We study the workload processes of two restricted M/G/1 queueing systems: in Model 1 any service requirement that would exceed a certain capacity threshold is truncated; in Model 2 new arrivals do not enter the system if they have to wait more than a fixed threshold time in line. For Model 1 we obtain several results concerning the rate of convergence to equilibrium. In particular we derive uniform bounds for geometric ergodicity with respect to certain subclasses. However, we prove that for the class of all Model 1 workload processes there is no uniform bound. For Model 2 we prove that geometric ergodicity follows from the finiteness of the moment-generating function of the service time distribution and derive bounds for the convergence rates in special cases. The proofs use the coupling method.

Geometric Ergodicity of a Hypoelliptic Diffusion Modelling The Melt-Spinning Process of Nonwoven Materials

We analyze the large time behavior of a stochastic model for the lay-down of fibers on a conveyor belt in the production process of nonwovens. It is shown, that under weak conditions this degenerate diffusion process is strong mixing, confirming a conjecture of Grothaus and Klar. Moreover, under some additional assumptions even geometric ergodicity is established using probabilistic tools -- described in the book of Meyn and Tweedie -- in combination with methods from stochastic analysis.

On a stochastic Trotter formula with application to spontaneous localization models

We consider the relation between so called continuous localization models - i.e. non-linear stochastic Schrödinger evolutions - and the discrete GRW-model of wave function collapse. The former can be understood as scaling limit of the GRW process. The proof relies on a stochastic Trotter formula, which is of interest in its own right. Our Trotter formula also allows to complement results on existence theory of stochastic Schrödinger evolutions by Holevo and Mora/Rebolledo.

On the Spectral Gap of Brownian Motion with Jump Boundary

In this paper we consider the Brownian motion with jump boundary and present a new proof of a recent result of Li, Leung and Rakesh concerning the exact convergence rate in the one-dimensional case. Our methods are different and mainly probabilistic relying on coupling methods adapted to the special situation under investigation. Moreover, we answer a question raised by Ben-Ari and Pinsky concerning the dependence of the spectral gap on the jump distribution in a multi-dimensional setting.

On the Time-Dependent Analysis of Gamow Decay

Gamow's explanation of the exponential decay law uses complex "eigenvalues" and exponentially growing "eigenfunctions". This raises the question, how Gamow's description fits into the quantum mechanical description of nature, which is based on real eigenvalues and square integrable wave functions. Observing that the time evolution of any wave function is given by its expansion in generalized eigenfunctions, we shall answer this question in the most straightforward manner, which at the same time is accessible to graduate students and specialists. Moreover the presentation can well be used in physics lectures to students.

Spectral Analysis of Diffusions with Jump Boundary

In this paper we consider one-dimensional diffusions with constant coefficients in a finite interval with jump boundary and a certain deterministic jump distribution. We use coupling methods in order to identify the spectral gap in the case of a large drift and prove that that there is a threshold drift above which the bottom of the spectrum no longer depends on the drift. As a Corollary to our result we are able to answer two questions concerning elliptic eigenvalue problems with non-local boundary conditions formulated previously by Iddo Ben-Ari and Ross Pinsky.

The Brownian traveller on manifolds

We study the influence of the intrinsic curvature on the large time behaviour of the heat equation in a tubular neighbourhood of an unbounded geodesic in a two-dimensional Riemannian manifold. Since we consider killing boundary conditions, there is always an exponential-type decay for the heat semigroup. We show that this exponential-type decay is slower for positively curved manifolds comparing to the flat case. As the main result, we establish a sharp extra polynomial-type decay for the heat semigroup on negatively curved manifolds comparing to the flat case. The proof employs the existence of Hardy-type inequalities for the Dirichlet Laplacian in the tubular neighbourhoods on negatively curved manifolds and the method of self-similar variables and weighted Sobolev spaces for the heat equation.

On the Quantum Mechanical Scattering Statistics of Many Particles

The probability of a quantum particle being detected in a given solid angle is determined by the $S$-matrix. The explanation of this fact in time dependent scattering theory is often linked to the quantum flux, since the quantum flux integrated against a (detector-) surface and over a time interval can be viewed as the probability that the particle crosses this surface within the given time interval. Regarding many particle scattering, however, this argument is no longer valid, as each particle arrives at the detector at its own random time. While various treatments of this problem can be envisaged, here we present a straightforward Bohmian analysis of many particle potential scattering from which the $S$-matrix probability emerges in the limit of large distances.

On the long time behavior of stochastic Schroedinger evolutions

We discuss the time evolution of the wave function which is solution of a stochastic Schroedinger equation describing the dynamics of a free quantum particle subject to spontaneous localizations in space. We prove global existence and uniqueness of solutions. Observing that there exist three time regimes, namely the collapse regime, after which the wave function is localized in space; the classical regime, during which the collapsed wave function moves along a classical path and the diffusive regime, in which diffusion overlaps significantly the deterministic motion, we study the long time behavior of the wave function. We assert that the general solution converges a.s. to a diffusing Gaussian wave function having a finite spread both in position as well as in momentum. This paper corrects and completes earlier works on this.
