A comparison principle for the Lane-Emden equation and applications to geometric estimates

We prove a comparison principle for positive supersolutions and subsolutions to the Lane-Emden equation for the $p-$Laplacian, with subhomogeneous power in the right-hand side. The proof uses variational tools and the result applies with no regularity assumptions, both on the set and the functions. We then show that such a comparison principle can be applied to prove: uniqueness of solutions; sharp pointwise estimates for positive solutions in convex sets; localization estimates for maximum points and sharp geometric estimates for generalized principal frequencies in convex sets.

A Steklov version of the Torsional Rigidity

Motivated by the connection between the first eigenvalue of the Dirichlet-Laplacian and the torsional rigidity, the aim of this paper is to find a physically coherent and mathematically interesting new concept for boundary torsional rigidity, closely related to the Steklov eigenvalue. From a variational point of view, such a new object corresponds to the sharp constant for the trace embedding of $W^{1,2}(Ω)$ into $L^1(\partialΩ)$. We obtain various equivalent variational formulations, present some properties of the state function and obtain some sharp geometric estimates, both for planar simply connected sets and for convex sets in any dimension.

On the sharp Hardy inequality in Sobolev-Slobodecki\uı spaces

We study the sharp constant in the Hardy inequality for fractional Sobolev spaces defined on open subsets of the Euclidean space. We first list some properties of such a constant, as well as of the associated variational problem. We then restrict the discussion to open convex sets and compute such a sharp constant, by constructing suitable supersolutions by means of the distance function. Such a method of proof works only for $s\,p\ge 1$ or for $Ω$ being a half-space. We exhibit a simple example suggesting that this method can not work for $s\,p<1$ and $Ω$ different from a half-space. The case $s\,p<1$ for a generic convex set is left as an interesting open problem, except in the Hilbertian setting (i.e. for $p=2$): in this case we can compute the sharp constant in the whole range $0<s<1$. This completes a result which was left open in the literature.

Characterisation of homogeneous fractional Sobolev spaces

Our aim is to characterize the homogeneous fractional Sobolev-Slobodecki\uı spaces $\mathcal{D}^{s,p} (\mathbb{R}^n)$ and their embeddings, for $s \in (0,1]$ and $p\ge 1$. They are defined as the completion of the set of smooth and compactly supported test functions with respect to the Gagliardo-Slobodecki\uı seminorms. For $s\,p < n$ or $s = p = n = 1$ we show that $\mathcal{D}^{s,p}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ is isomorphic to a suitable function space, whereas for $s\,p \ge n$ it is isomorphic to a space of equivalence classes of functions, differing by an additive constant. As one of our main tools, we present a Morrey-Campanato inequality where the Gagliardo-Slobodecki\uı seminorm controls from above a suitable Campanato seminorm.

Higher Sobolev regularity for the fractional $p-$Laplace equation in the superquadratic case

We prove that for $p\ge 2$ solutions of equations modeled by the fractional $p$-Laplacian improve their regularity on the scale of fractional Sobolev spaces. Moreover, under certain precise conditions, they are in $W^{1,p}_{loc}$ and their gradients are in a fractional Sobolev space as well. The relevant estimates are stable as the fractional order of differentiation $s$ reaches $1$.

The second eigenvalue of the fractional $p-$Laplacian

We consider the eigenvalue problem for the {\it fractional $p-$Laplacian} in an open bounded, possibly disconnected set $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$, under homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. After discussing some regularity issues for eigenfuctions, we show that the second eigenvalue $λ_2(Ω)$ is well-defined, and we characterize it by means of several equivalent variational formulations. In particular, we extend the mountain pass characterization of Cuesta, De Figueiredo and Gossez to the nonlocal and nonlinear setting. Finally, we consider the minimization problem \[ \inf \{λ_2(Ω)\,:\,|Ω|=c\}. \] We prove that, differently from the local case, an optimal shape does not exist, even among disconnected sets. A minimizing sequence is given by the union of two disjoint balls of volume $c/2$ whose mutual distance tends to infinity.

Global Lipschitz continuity for minima of degenerate problems

We consider the problem of minimizing the Lagrangian $\int [F(\nabla u)+f\,u]$ among functions on $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^N$ with given boundary datum $φ$. We prove Lipschitz regularity up to the boundary for solutions of this problem, provided $Ω$ is convex and $φ$ satisfies the bounded slope condition. The convex function $F$ is required to satisfy a qualified form of uniform convexity {\it only outside a ball} and no growth assumptions are made.

Improved energy bounds for Schrödinger operators

Given a potential $V$ and the associated Schrödinger operator $-Δ+V$, we consider the problem of providing sharp upper and lower bound on the energy of the operator. It is known that if for example $V$ or $V^{-1}$ enjoys suitable summability properties, the problem has a positive answer. In this paper we show that the corresponding isoperimetric-like inequalities can be improved by means of quantitative stability estimates.

The heart of a convex body

We investigate some basic properties of the {\it heart} $\heartsuit(\mathcal{K})$ of a convex set $\mathcal{K}.$ It is a subset of $\mathcal{K},$ whose definition is based on mirror reflections of euclidean space, and is a non-local object. The main motivation of our interest for $\heartsuit(\mathcal{K})$ is that this gives an estimate of the location of the hot spot in a convex heat conductor with boundary temperature grounded at zero. Here, we investigate on the relation between $\heartsuit(\mathcal{K})$ and the mirror symmetries of $\mathcal{K};$ we show that $\heartsuit(\mathcal{K})$ contains many (geometrically and phisically) relevant points of $\mathcal{K};$ we prove a simple geometrical lower estimate for the diameter of $\heartsuit(\mathcal{K});$ we also prove an upper estimate for the area of $\heartsuit(\mathcal{K}),$ when $\mathcal{K}$ is a triangle.

A continuous model of transportation revisited

We review two models of optimal transport, where congestion effects during the transport can be possibly taken into account. The first model is Beckmann's one, where the transport activities are modeled by vector fields with given divergence. The second one is the model by Carlier et al. (SIAM J Control Optim 47: 1330-1350, 2008), which in turn is the continuous reformulation of Wardrop's model on graphs. We discuss the extensions of these models to their natural functional analytic setting and show that they are indeed equivalent, by using Smirnov decomposition theorem for normal 1-currents.

Faber-Krahn inequalities in sharp quantitative form

The classical Faber-Krahn inequality asserts that balls (uniquely) minimize the first eigenvalue of the Dirichlet-Laplacian among sets with given volume. In this paper we prove a sharp quantitative enhancement of this result, thus confirming a conjecture by Nadirashvili and Bhattacharya-Weitsman. More generally, the result applies to every optimal Poincaré-Sobolev constant for the embeddings $W^{1,2}_0(Ω)\hookrightarrow L^q(Ω)$.

The fractional Cheeger problem

Given an open and bounded set $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^N$, we consider the problem of minimizing the ratio between the $s-$perimeter and the $N-$dimensional Lebesgue measure among subsets of $Ω$. This is the nonlocal version of the well-known Cheeger problem. We prove various properties of optimal sets for this problem, as well as some equivalent formulations. In addition, the limiting behaviour of some nonlinear and nonlocal eigenvalue problems is investigated, in relation with this optimization problem. The presentation is as self-contained as possible.

The location of the hot spot in a grounded convex conductor

We investigate the location of the (unique) hot spot in a convex heat conductor with unitary initial temperature and with boundary grounded at zero temperature. We present two methods to locate the hot spot: the former is based on ideas related to the Alexandrov-Bakelmann-Pucci maximum principle and Monge-Ampère equations; the latter relies on Alexandrov's reflection principle. We then show how such a problem can be simplified in case the conductor is a polyhedron. Finally, we present some numerical computations.
