Emergent spin-$1$ Haldane gap and ferroelectricity in a frustrated spin-$1/2$ ladder

We report experimental and theoretical evidence that Rb$_2$Cu$_2$Mo$_3$O$_{12}$ has a nonmagnetic tetramer ground state of a two-leg ladder comprising antiferromagnetically coupled frustrated spin-$1/2$ chains and exhibits a Haldane spin gap of emergent spin-1 pairs. Three spin excitations split from the spin-1 triplet by a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction are identified in inelastic neutron-scattering and electron spin resonance spectra. A tiny magnetic field generates ferroelectricity without closing the spin gap, indicating a novel class of ferroelectricity induced by a vector spin chirality order.

YUI and HANA: Control and Visualization Programs for HRC in J-PARC

We developed control and visualization programs, YUI and HANA, for High- Resolution Chopper spectrometer (HRC) installed at BL12 in MLF, J-PARC. YUI is a comprehensive program to control DAQ-middleware, the accessories, and sample environment devices. HANA is a program for the data transformation and visualization of inelastic neutron scattering spectra. In this paper, we describe the basic system structures and unique functions of these programs from the viewpoint of users.

Superparamagnetism induced by polar nanoregions in relaxor ferroelectric (1$-$$x$)BiFeO$_{3}$-$x$BaTiO$_{3}$

A new class of superparamagnetism was found in relaxor ferroelectric 2/3BiFeO$_{3}$-1/3BaTiO$_{3}$. The size of the magnetic particle, estimated from the superparamagnetic magnetization curve, coincides with the size of the polar nanoregion (PNR), which governs the relaxor ferroelectric property. This suggests that the magnetic domain is identical to the PNR. The temperature variations in the sizes of the magnetic domains and PNRs estimated by our neutron diffraction measurements support this picture. Since the same domain provides both electric and magnetic properties, strong coupling between the two properties through the domain size is expected.

Successive Magnetic Transitions of the Kagome Staircase Compound Co3V2O8 Studied in Various Magnetic Fields

For the spin-3/2 kagome staircase system Co3V2O8, magnetic field (H)-temperature (T) phase diagrams have been constructed for the fields along three principal directions up to 5 T, using results of various macroscopic measurements on single crystal samples and also using neutron diffraction data taken on both powder and single crystal samples under H along c. In zero magnetic field, the system exhibits three transitions at temperatures Tc1~11.2 K, Tc2~8.8 K and Tc3~ (6.0-7.0) K. The single crystal data present clear evidence for the noncollinear nature of the magnetic structures in all magnetically ordered phases below Tc1. The sinusoidal nature of the incommensurate modulation of the ordered moment reported in the former work has been confirmed between Tc1 and Tc2, that is, no higher harmonics of the modulation have been detected even for the present large single crystal. Even in the phase of commensurate modulation between Tc2 and Tc3, we have not detected any higher harmonics of the modulation. The phase diagrams show that the magnetically ordered phases sensitively change to other phases with H, indicating that the geometrical frustration inherent in this system is important for the determination of the phase diagram. No evidence for ferroelectric transitions has been observed in the measurements of the dielectric constant applying the electric fields along three crystallographic axes, a, b and c. Only small dielectric anomalies closely connected with the magnetic phase transitions have been found.
