Frustrated Magnetism in FeGe3_3O4_4 with a Chiral Trillium Network

The discovery of new magnetic ground states in geometrically frustrated lattices remains a central challenge in materials science. Here, we report the synthesis, structural characterization, and frustrated magnetic properties of FeGe3_3O4_4, a newly identified compound that crystallizes in the noncentrosymmetric cubic space group P213P2_13. In this structure, Fe atoms form an intricate double-trillium lattice with nearest-neighbor Fe--Fe distances of ∼\sim4.2~Å, while Ge2+^{2+} ions mediate magnetic interactions through Fe-Ge-Fe pathways. Field-dependent magnetization at 2~K shows a pronounced nonlinearity, reaching a maximum moment of 2.55(3)~μBμ_\mathrm{B}/Fe2+^{2+} at 70~kOe without evidence of saturation. Magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and neutron scattering collectively reveal the onset of short-range magnetic interactions near 5~K, with no long-range ordering detected down to 0.06~K. Specific heat measurements demonstrate strong frustration: only ∼\sim34\% of the expected magnetic entropy is recovered at 2.4~K. Taken together, these results establish FeGe3_3O4_4 as a rare example of a geometrically frustrated trillium-lattice magnet, offering a promising platform for exploring exotic quantum magnetic phenomena.

gg-Expectation of Distributions

We define gg-expectation of a distribution as the infimum of the gg-expectations of all the terminal random variables sharing that distribution. We present two special cases for nonlinear gg where the gg-expectation of distributions can be explicitly derived. As a related problem, we introduce the notion of law-invariant gg-expectation and provide its sufficient conditions. Examples of application in financial dynamic portfolio choice are supplied.

X-ray charge-density studies −- a suitable probe for superconductivity?

Case studies of 1T1T-TiSe2_2 and YBa2_2Cu3_3O7−δ_{7-δ} have demonstrated that x-ray diffraction (XRD) studies can be used to trace even subtle structural phase transitions which are inherently connected with the onset of superconductivity in these benchmark systems. Yet, the utility of XRD in the investigation of superconductors like MgB2_2 lacking an additional symmetry-breaking structural phase transition is not immediately evident. Even though, high-resolution powder XRD experiments on MgB2_2 in combination with maximum entropy method (MEM) analyses hinted at differences between the electron density distributions at room temperature and 15K, i.e. below the TcT_c of approx. 39K. The high-resolution single-crystal XRD experiments in combination with multipolar refinements presented here can reproduce these results, but show that the observed temperature-dependent density changes are almost entirely due to a decrease of atomic displacement parameters as a natural consequence of reduced thermal vibration amplitude with decreasing temperature. Our investigations also shed new light on the presence or absence of magnesium vacancies in MgB2_2 samples −- a defect type claimed to control the superconducting properties of the compound. We propose that previous reports on the tendency of MgB2_2 to form non-stoichiometric Mg1−x_{1-x}B2_2 phases (1−x∼1 - x \sim0.95) during high-temperature (HT) synthesis might result from the interpretation of XRD data of insufficient resolution and/or usage of inflexible refinement models.
