X-ray charge-density studies $-$ a suitable probe for superconductivity?

Case studies of $1T$-TiSe$_2$ and YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ have demonstrated that x-ray diffraction (XRD) studies can be used to trace even subtle structural phase transitions which are inherently connected with the onset of superconductivity in these benchmark systems. Yet, the utility of XRD in the investigation of superconductors like MgB$_2$ lacking an additional symmetry-breaking structural phase transition is not immediately evident. Even though, high-resolution powder XRD experiments on MgB$_2$ in combination with maximum entropy method (MEM) analyses hinted at differences between the electron density distributions at room temperature and 15K, i.e. below the $T_c$ of approx. 39K. The high-resolution single-crystal XRD experiments in combination with multipolar refinements presented here can reproduce these results, but show that the observed temperature-dependent density changes are almost entirely due to a decrease of atomic displacement parameters as a natural consequence of reduced thermal vibration amplitude with decreasing temperature. Our investigations also shed new light on the presence or absence of magnesium vacancies in MgB$_2$ samples $-$ a defect type claimed to control the superconducting properties of the compound. We propose that previous reports on the tendency of MgB$_2$ to form non-stoichiometric Mg$_{1-x}$B$_2$ phases ($1 - x \sim$0.95) during high-temperature (HT) synthesis might result from the interpretation of XRD data of insufficient resolution and/or usage of inflexible refinement models.

Relativistic Effects on X-ray Structure Factors

X-ray structure factors from four-component molecular wave functions have been calculated for the model systems $M$(C$_2$H$_2$) ($M$= Ni, Pd, Pt). Relativistic effects on the structure factors are investigated by the comparison to results obtained from a non-relativistic reference and in order to systematically analyse the effect of different quasi-relativistic approximations, we also included the DKH2 and the ZORA Hamiltonian in our study. We show, that the overall effects of relativity on the structure factors on average amount to 0.47, 0.80 and 1.27% for the three model systems under investigation, but that for individual reflections or reflection series the effects can be orders of magnitude larger. Employing the DKH2 or ZORA Hamiltonian takes these effects into account to a large extend, reducing the according differences by one order of magnitude. In order to determine the experimental significance of the results, the magnitude of the relativistic effects on the structure factors is compared to the according changes due to charge transfer and chemical bonding.

1D to 3D Dimensional Crossover in the Superconducting Transition of the Quasi-One-Dimensional Carbide Superconductor Sc3CoC4

The transition metal carbide superconductor Sc3CoC4 may represent a new benchmark system of quasi-1D superconducting behavior. We investigate the superconducting transition of a high-quality single crystalline sample by electrical transport experiments. Our data show that the superconductor goes through a complex dimensional crossover below the onset Tc of 4.5 K. First, a quasi-1D fluctuating superconducting state with finite resistance forms in the CoC4 ribbons which are embedded in a Sc matrix in this material. At lower temperature, the transversal Josephson or proximity coupling of neighboring ribbons establishes a 3D bulk superconducting state. This dimensional crossover is very similar to Tl2Mo6Se6, which for a long time has been regarded as the most appropriate model system of a quasi-1D superconductor. Sc3CoC4 appears to be even more in the 1D limit than Tl2Mo6Se6.

Ceramic Methyltrioxorhenium

The metal oxide polymeric methyltrioxorhenium [(CH3)xReO3] is an unique epresentative of a layered inherent conducting organometallic polymer which adopts the structural motifs of classical perovskites in two dimensions (2D) in form of methyl-deficient, corner-sharing ReO5(CH3) octahedra. In order to improve the characteristics of polymeric methyltrioxorhenium with respect to its physical properties and potential usage as an inherentconducting polymer we tried to optimise the synthetic routes of polymeric modifications of 1 to obtain a sintered ceramic material, denoted ceramic MTO. Ceramic MTO formed in a solvent-free synthesis via auto-polymerisation and subsequent sintering processing displays clearly different mechanical and physical properties from polymeric MTO synthesised in aqueous solution. Ceramic MTO is shown to display activated Re-C and Re=O bonds relative to MTO. These electronic and structural characteristics of ceramic MTO are also reflected by a different chemical reactivity compared with its monomeric parent compound. First examples of the unprecedented reactivity of ceramic MTO in the field of amine oxidations are shown - results which warrant further exploitation.
