Frustrated Magnetism in FeGe$_3$O$_4$ with a Chiral Trillium Network

The discovery of new magnetic ground states in geometrically frustrated lattices remains a central challenge in materials science. Here, we report the synthesis, structural characterization, and frustrated magnetic properties of FeGe$_3$O$_4$, a newly identified compound that crystallizes in the noncentrosymmetric cubic space group $P2_13$. In this structure, Fe atoms form an intricate double-trillium lattice with nearest-neighbor Fe--Fe distances of $\sim$4.2~Å, while Ge$^{2+}$ ions mediate magnetic interactions through Fe-Ge-Fe pathways. Field-dependent magnetization at 2~K shows a pronounced nonlinearity, reaching a maximum moment of 2.55(3)~$μ_\mathrm{B}$/Fe$^{2+}$ at 70~kOe without evidence of saturation. Magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and neutron scattering collectively reveal the onset of short-range magnetic interactions near 5~K, with no long-range ordering detected down to 0.06~K. Specific heat measurements demonstrate strong frustration: only $\sim$34\% of the expected magnetic entropy is recovered at 2.4~K. Taken together, these results establish FeGe$_3$O$_4$ as a rare example of a geometrically frustrated trillium-lattice magnet, offering a promising platform for exploring exotic quantum magnetic phenomena.

Local distortion driven magnetic phase switching in pyrochlore $Yb_2(Ti_{1-x}Sn_x)_2O_7$

While it is commonly accepted that the disorder induced by magnetic ion doping in quantum magnets usually generates a rugged free-energy landscape resulting in slow or glassy spin dynamics, the disorder/distortion effects associated with non-magnetic ion sites doping are still illusive. Here, using AC susceptibility measurements, we show that the mixture of Sn/Ti on the non-magnetic ion sites of pyrochlore $Yb_2(Ti_{1-x}Sn_x)_2O_7$ induces an antiferromagnetic ground state despite both parent compounds, $Yb_2Ti_2O_7$, and $Yb_2Sn_2O_7$, order ferromagnetically. Local structure studies through neutron total scattering reveals the local distortion in the non-magnetic ion sites and its strong correlation with the magnetic phase switching. Our study, for the first time, demonstrates the local distortion as induced by the non-magnetic ion site mixture could be a new path to achieve magnetic phase switching, which has been traditionally obtained by external stimuli such as temperature, magnetic field, pressure, strain, light, etc.

Spinon continuum in the Heisenberg quantum chain compound Sr$_2$V$_3$O$_9$

Magnetic excitations in the spin chain candidate Sr$_2$V$_3$O$_9$ have been investigated by inelastic neutron scattering on a single crystal sample. A spinon continuum with a bandwidth of $\sim22$ meV is observed along the chain formed by alternating magnetic V$^{4+}$ and nonmagnetic V$^{5+}$ ions. Incipient magnetic Bragg peaks due to weak ferromagnetic interchain couplings emerge when approaching the magnetic transition at $T_N\sim 5.3$ K while the excitations remain gapless within the instrumental resolution. Comparisons to the Bethe ansatz, density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations, and effective field theories confirm Sr$_2$V$_3$O$_9$ as a host of weakly coupled $S = 1/2$ chains dominated by antiferromagnetic intrachain interactions of $\sim7.1$(1) meV.

Anticollinear order and degeneracy lifting in square lattice antiferromagnet LaSrCrO4

We report the static and dynamic magnetic properties of LaSrCrO$_4$, a seemingly canonical spin-3/2 square-lattice antiferromagnet that exhibits frustration between magnetic layers -- owing to their AB stacking -- and offers a rare testbed to investigate accidental-degeneracy lifting in magnetism. Neutron diffraction experiments on single-crystal samples uncover a remarkable anticollinear magnetic order below $T_N$ = 170 K characterized by a Néel arrangement of the spins within each layer and an orthogonal arrangement between adjacent layers. To understand the origin of this unusual magnetic structure, we analyze the spin-wave excitation spectrum by means of inelastic neutron scattering and bulk measurements. A spectral gap of 0.5 meV, along with a spin-flop transition at 3.2\, T, reflect the energy scale associated with the degeneracy-lifting. A minimal model to explain these observations requires both a positive biquadratic interlayer exchange and dipolar interactions, both of which are on the order of 10$^{-4}$ meV, only a few parts per million of the dominant exchange interaction $J_1 \approx 11$ meV. These results provide direct evidence for the selection of a non-collinear magnetic structure by the combined effect of two distinct degeneracy lifting interactions.

Antiferromagnetic Kitaev interaction in $J_\rm{eff}=1/2$ cobalt honeycomb materials Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$ and Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$

Finding new materials with antiferromagnetic (AFM) Kitaev interaction is an urgent issue to broaden and enrich the quantum magnetism research significantly. By carrying out inelastic neutron scattering experiments and subsequent analysis, we conclude that Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$ and Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ are new honeycomb cobalt-based AFM Kitaev systems. The spin-orbit excitons at 20-28~meV in both compounds strongly supports the idea that Co$^{2+}$ ions of both compounds have a spin-orbital entangled $J_\rm{eff}=1/2$ state. Furthermore, we found that a generalized Kitaev-Heisenberg Hamiltonian can well describe the spin-wave excitations of both compounds with additional 3rd nearest-neighbor interaction. Our best-fit parameters show large AFM Kitaev terms and off-diagonal symmetric anisotropy terms of a similar magnitude in both compounds. We should stress that our parameters' optimized magnetic structures are consistent with the magnetic structures reported from neutron diffraction studies. Moreover, there is also the magnon-damping effect at the higher energy part of the spin waves, as usually observed in other Kitaev magnets. We demonstrate that Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$ and Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ are the first experimental realization of AFM Kitaev magnets based on the systematic studies of the spin waves and analysis.

Investigation of the monopole magneto-chemical potential in spin ices using capacitive torque magnetometry

The single-ion anisotropy and magnetic interactions in spin-ice systems give rise to unusual non-collinear spin textures, such as Pauling states and magnetic monopoles. The effective spin correlation strength ($J_{eff}$) determines the relative energies of the different spin-ice states. With this work, we display the capability of capacitive torque magnetometry in characterizing the magneto-chemical potential associated with monopole formation. We build a magnetic phase diagram of Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, and show that the magneto-chemical potential depends on the spin-sublattice ($α$ or $β$), i.e., the Pauling state, involved in the transition. Monte-Carlo simulations using the dipolar-spin-ice Hamiltonian support our findings of a sublattice-dependent magneto-chemical potential, but the model underestimates the $J_{eff}$ for the $β$-sublattice. Additional simulations, including next-nearest neighbor interactions ($J_2$), show that long-range exchange terms in the Hamiltonian are needed to describe the measurements. This demonstrates that torque magnetometry provides a sensitive test for $J_{eff}$ and the spin-spin interactions that contribute to it.

Magnetic field tuning of crystal field levels and vibronic states in Spin-ice Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ observed in far-infrared reflectometry

Low temperature optical spectroscopy in applied magnetic fields provides clear evidence of magnetoelastic coupling in the spin ice material Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$. In far-IR reflectometry measurements, we observe field dependent features around 30, 61, 72 and 78~meV, energies corresponding to crystal electronic field (CEF) doublets. The calculations of the crystal-field Hamiltonian model confirm that the observed features in IR spectra are consistent with magnetic-dipole-allowed excitations from the ground state to higher $^5$I$_8$ CEF levels. We present the CEF parameters that best describe our field-dependent IR reflectivity measurements. Additionally, we identify a weak field-dependent shoulder near one of the CEF doublets. This indicates that this level is split even in zero-field, which we associate with a vibronic bound state. Modeling of the observed splitting shows that the phonon resides at slightly lower energy compared to the CEF level that it couples to, which is in contrast with previously published inelastic neutron measurements. The magnetic field dependence of the vibronic state shows a gradual decoupling of the phonon with the CEF level as it shifts. This approach should work in pyrochlores and other systems that have magnetic dipole transitions in the IR spectroscopic range, which can elucidate the presence and the ability to tune the nature of vibronic states in a wide variety of materials.

Regulate the direct-indirect electronic band gap transition by electron-phonon interaction in BaSnO3

The neutron powder diffraction, specific heat, thermal conductivity, and Raman scattering measurements were presented to study the interplays of lattice, phonons and electrons of the Sr-doping Ba1-xSrxSnO3 (x was less than or equal to 0.1). Although Ba1-xSrxSnO3 kept the cubic lattice, the Raman spectra suggested a dynamic distortion at low temperature. The density functional theory was applied to analyze the electronic structures and phonon dispersions of Ba1-xSrxSnO3(x = 0, 0.0125), and the behaviors of electron bands around Fermi levels were discussed. According to the experimental and theoretical results, the Sr-doping played a significant role in tuning the indirect band gap of BaSnO3 and influenced the electron-phonon interaction.

Magneto-transport evidence for strong topological insulator phase in ZrTe5

The identification of a non-trivial band topology usually relies on directly probing the protected surface/edge states. But, it is difficult to achieve electronically in narrow-gap topological materials due to the small (meV) energy scales. Here, we demonstrate that band inversion, a crucial ingredient of the non-trivial band topology, can serve as an alternative, experimentally accessible indicator. We show that an inverted band can lead to a four-fold splitting of the non-zero Landau levels, contrasting the two-fold splitting (spin splitting only) in the normal band. We confirm our predictions in magneto-transport experiments on a narrow-gap strong topological insulator, zirconium pentatelluride (ZrTe$_5$), with the observation of additional splittings in the quantum oscillations and also an anomalous peak in the extreme quantum limit. Our work establishes an effective strategy for identifying the band inversion as well as the associated topological phases for future topological materials research.

Neutron scattering investigation of proposed Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions in the triangular-lattice Ising antiferromagnet TmMgGaO4

The transverse-field Ising model on the triangular lattice is expected to host an intermediate finite-temperature Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) phase through a mapping of the spins on each triangular unit to a complex order parameter. TmMgGaO$_4$ is a candidate material to realize such physics due to the non-Kramers nature of Tm$^{3+}$ ion and the resulting two-singlet single-ion ground state. Using inelastic neutron scattering, we confirm this picture by determining the leading parameters of the low-energy effective Hamiltonian of TmMgGaO$_4$. Subsequently, we track the predicted KT phase and related transitions by inspecting the field and temperature dependence of the ac susceptibility. We further probe the spin correlations in both reciprocal space and real space via single crystal neutron diffraction and magnetic total scattering techniques, respectively. Magnetic pair distribution function analysis provides evidence for the formation of vortex-antivortex pairs that characterize the proposed KT phase around 5~K. Although structural disorder influences the field-induced behavior of TmMgGaO$_4$, the magnetism in zero field appears relatively free from these effects. These results position TmMgGaO$_4$ as a strong candidate for a solid-state realization of KT physics in a dense spin system.

Current-induced CrI3 surface spin-flop transition probed by proximity magnetoresistance in Pt

By exploiting proximity coupling, we probe the spin state of the surface layers of CrI3, a van der Waals magnetic semiconductor, by measuring the induced magnetoresistance (MR) of Pt in Pt/CrI3 nano-devices. We fabricate the devices with clean and stable interfaces by placing freshly exfoliated CrI3 flake atop pre-patterned thin Pt strip and encapsulating the Pt/CrI3 heterostructure with hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) in a protected environment. In devices consisting of a wide range of CrI3 thicknesses (30 to 150 nm), we observe that an abrupt upward jump in Pt MR emerge at a 2 T magnetic field applied perpendicularly to the layers when the current density exceeds 2.5x10^10 A/m2, followed by a gradual decrease over a range of 5 T. These distinct MR features suggest a spin-flop transition which reveals strong antiferromagnetic interlayer coupling in the surface layers of CrI3. We study the current dependence by holding the Pt/CrI3 sample at approximately the same temperature to exclude the joule heating effect, and find that the MR jump increases with the current density, indicating a spin current origin. This spin current effect provides a new route to control spin configurations in insulating antiferromagnets, which is potentially useful for spintronic applications.

Hybridized quadrupolar excitations in the spin-anisotropic frustrated magnet FeI2

Magnetic order is usually associated with well-defined magnon excitations. Exotic magnetic fluctuations with fractional, topological or multipolar character, have been proposed for radically different forms of magnetic matter such as spin-liquids. As a result, considerable efforts have searched for, and uncovered, low-spin materials with suppressed dipolar order at low temperatures. Here, we report neutron-scattering experiments and quantitative theoretical modeling of an exceptional spin-1 system -- the uniaxial triangular magnet FeI2 -- where a bright and dispersive band of mixed dipolar-quadrupolar fluctuations emerges just above a dipolar ordered ground-state. This excitation arises from anisotropic exchange interactions that hybridize overlapping modes carrying fundamentally different quantum numbers. Remarkably, a generalization of spin-wave theory to local SU(3) degrees of freedom accounts for all details of the low-energy dynamical response of FeI2 without going beyond quadratic order. Our work highlights that quantum excitations without classical counterparts can be realized even in presence of fully developed magnetic order.

Nature of Partial Magnetic Order in the Frustrated Antiferromagnet Gd2Ti2O7

Partially-ordered magnets are distinct from both spin liquids and conventional ordered magnets because order and disorder coexist in the same magnetic phase. Here, we determine the nature of partial order in the canonical frustrated pyrochlore antiferromagnet Gd$_2$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$. Using single-crystal neutron-diffraction measurements in applied magnetic field, magnetic symmetry analysis, inelastic neutron-scattering measurements, and spin-wave modeling, we show that its low-temperature magnetic structure involves two propagation vectors (2-$\mathbf{k}$ structure) with suppressed ordered magnetic moments and enhanced spin-wave fluctuations. Our experimental results support theoretical predictions of thermal fluctuation-driven order in Gd$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$.

Successive dielectric anomalies and magnetoelectric coupling in honeycomb Fe$_4$Nb$_2$O$_9$

By combining single crystal x-ray and neutron diffraction, and the magnetodielectric measurements on single crystal Fe4Nb2O9, we present the magnetic structure and the symmetry-allowed magnetoelectric coupling in Fe4Nb2O9. It undergoes an antiferromagnetic transition at TN=93 K, followed by a displacive transition at TS=70 K. The temperature-dependent dielectric constant of Fe4Nb2O9 is strongly anisotropic with the first anomaly at 93 K due to the exchange striction as a result of the long range spin order, and the second one at 70 K emanating from the structural phase transition primarily driven by the O atomic displacements. Magneticfield induced magnetoelectric coupling was observed in single crystal Fe4Nb2O9 and is compatible with the solved magnetic structure that is characteristic of antiferromagnetically arranged ferromagnetic chains in the honeycomb plane. We propose that such magnetic symmetry should be immune to external magnetic fields to some extent favored by the freedom of rotation of moments in the honeycomb plane, laying out a promising system to control the magnetoelectric properties by magnetic fields.

Incommensurate crystal supercell and polarization-flop observed in the magnetoelectric ilmenite, MnTiO3

MnTiO3 has been studied for many decades, but it was only in the last few years that its strong magnetoelectric behavior had been observed. Here, we use neutron scattering on two separately grown single crystals and two powder samples to show the presence of a supercell that breaks R-3 symmetry. We also present the temperature and field dependence of the dielectric constant and pyroelectric current, and show evidence of non-zero off-diagonal magnetoelectric tensor elements (forbidden by R-3 symmetry) followed by a polarization flop accompanying the spin flop transition at μ0HSF = 6.5 T. Mössbauer spectroscopy on MnTiO3 gently doped with 57Fe was used to help shed light on the impact of the supercell on the observed behavior. Although the full supercell structure could not be solved at this time due to a lack of visible reflections, the full-scope of the results presented here suggest that the role of local spin-lattice coupling in the magnetoelectric properties of MnTiO3 is likely more important than previously thought.

Removing the spin ice cap: magnetic ground states of rare earth tripod kagome lattice Mg$_2$RE$_3$Sb$_3$O$_{14}$ (RE = Gd, Dy, Er)

We present the structural and magnetic properties of a new compound family, Mg$_2$RE$_3$Sb$_3$O$_{14}$ (RE = Gd, Dy, Er), with a hitherto unstudied frustrating lattice, the "tripod kagome" structure. Susceptibility (ac, dc) and specific heat exhibit features that are understood within a simple Luttinger-Tisza type theory. For RE = Gd, we found long ranged order (LRO) at 1.65 K, which is consistent with a 120 $^{\circ}$ structure, demonstrating the importance of diople interactions for this 2D Heisenberg system. For RE = Dy, LRO at 0.37 K is related to the "kagome spin ice (KSI)" physics for a 2D system. This result shows that the tripod kagome structure accelerates the transition to LRO predicted for the related pyrochlore systems. For RE = Er, two transitions, at 80 mK and 2.1 K are observed, suggesting the importance of quantum fluctuations for this putative XY system.

Structural and magnetic phase transitions in EuTi1-xNbxO3

We investigate the structural and magnetic phase transitions in EuTi1-xNbxO3 with synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (RUS), and magnetization measurements. Upon Nb-doping, the Pm-3m to I4/mcm structural transition shifts to higher temperatures and the room temperature lattice parameter increases while the magnitude of the octahedral tilting decreases. In addition, Nb substitution for Ti destabilizes the antiferromagnetic ground state of the parent compound and long range ferromagnetic order is observed in the samples containing more than 10% Nb. The structural transition in pure and doped compounds is marked by a step-like softening of the elastic moduli in a narrow temperature interval near TS, which resembles that of SrTiO3 and can be adequately modeled using the Landau free energy model employing the same coupling between strain and octahedral tilting order parameter as previously used to model SrTiO3.

Excess-Hole Induced High Temperature Polarized State and its Correlation with the Multiferroicity in Single Crystalline DyMnO3

Controlling the ferroelectricity and magnetism in multiferroic materials has been an important research topic. We report the formation of a highly polarized state in multiferroic DyMnO3 single crystals which develops well above the magnetic transition temperatures, and we attribute it the thermally stimulated depolarization current effect of excess holes forming Mn4+ ions in the system. We also show that this high temperature polarized state intimately correlates with the lower temperature ferroelectric state that is induced by the incommensurate spiral magnetic order of Mn spins. This study demonstrate an efficient approach to tune the multiferroicity in the manganite system.

Origin of the phase transition in IrTe2: structural modulation and local bonding instability

We used X-ray/neutron diffraction to determine the low temperature (LT) structure of IrTe2. A structural modulation was observed with a wavevector of k =(1/5, 0, 1/5) below Ts?285 K, accompanied by a structural transition from a trigonal to a triclinic lattice. We also performed the first principles calculations for high temperature (HT) and LT structures, which elucidate the nature of the phase transition and the LT structure. A local bonding instability associated with the Te 5p states is likely the origin of the structural phase transition in IrTe2.

Evidence that the upper critical field of Nb3Sn is independent of whether it is cubic or tetragonal

Although 2011 marks the 50th anniversary of Nb3Sn as the first high field superconductor, real understanding of its upper critical field behavior μ0Hc2 is incomplete. Here we show surprising μ0Hc2 data on highly homogeneous bulk samples examined both by small-current, transport and by volumetric-averaging specific heat and the reversible magnetization techniques, which exhibit identical upper critical field μ0Hc2(0.3 K) ~ 29{\pm} 0.2 T with or without undergoing the cubic to tetragonal transition, a result in strong contrast to widely used multiple-source data compilations that show a strong depression of μ0Hc2(0K) from 29 T to 21.4 T in the tetragonal state.
