The Du Bois complex of a hypersurface and the minimal exponent

We study the Du Bois complex $\underlineΩ_Z^\bullet$ of a hypersurface $Z$ in a smooth complex algebraic variety in terms its minimal exponent $\widetildeα(Z)$. The latter is an invariant of singularities, defined as the negative of the greatest root of the reduced Bernstein-Sato polynomial of $Z$, and refining the log canonical threshold. We show that if $\widetildeα(Z)\geq p+1$, then the canonical morphism $Ω_Z^p\to \underlineΩ_Z^p$ is an isomorphism, where $\underlineΩ_Z^p$ is the $p$-th associated graded piece of the Du Bois complex with respect to the Hodge filtration. On the other hand, if $Z$ is singular and $\widetildeα(Z)>p\geq 2$, we obtain non-vanishing results for some of the higher cohomologies of $\underlineΩ_Z^{n-p}$.

Hodge ideals for Q-divisors, V-filtration, and minimal exponent

We explicitly compute the Hodge ideals of Q-divisors in terms of the V-filtration induced by a local defining equation, inspired by a result of Saito in the reduced case. We deduce basic properties of Hodge ideals in this generality, and relate them to Bernstein-Sato polynomials. As a consequence of our study we establish general properties of the minimal exponent, a refined version of the log canonical threshold, and bound it in terms of discrepancies on log resolutions, addressing a question of Lichtin and Kollár.

Hodge filtration, minimal exponent, and local vanishing

We bound the generation level of the Hodge filtration on the localization along a hypersurface in terms of its minimal exponent. As a consequence, we obtain a local vanishing theorem for sheaves of forms with log poles. These results are extended to Q-divisors, and are derived from a result of independent interest on the generation level of the Hodge filtration on nearby and vanishing cycles.

Hodge modules on complex tori and generic vanishing for compact Kähler manifolds

We extend the results of generic vanishing theory to polarizable real Hodge modules on compact complex tori, and from there to arbitrary compact Kähler manifolds. As applications, we obtain a bimeromorphic characterization of compact complex tori among compact Kähler manifolds, semi-positivity results, and a description of the Leray filtration for maps to tori.

Viehweg's hyperbolicity conjecture for families with maximal variation

We use the theory of Hodge modules to construct Viehweg-Zuo sheaves on the base spaces of families with maximal variation and fibers of general type, or more generally whose geometric generic fiber has a good minimal model. We deduce Viehweg's hyperbolicity conjecture in this context, namely the fact that the base spaces of such families are of log general type. This is approached as part of a general problem of identifying what spaces can support Hodge theoretic objects with certain positivity properties.

On direct images of pluricanonical bundles

We show that techniques inspired by Kollár and Viehweg's study of weak positivity, combined with vanishing theorems for log-canonical pairs, lead to new consequences regarding generation and vanishing properties for direct images of pluricanonical bundles. We formulate the strongest such results as Fujita conjecture-type statements, which are then shown to govern a range of fundamental properties of direct images of pluricanonical and pluriadjoint line bundles, like effective vanishing theorems, weak positivity, or generic vanishing.

Generic vanishing theory via mixed Hodge modules

We extend the dimension and strong linearity results of generic vanishing theory to bundles of holomorphic forms and rank one local systems, and more generally to certain coherent sheaves of Hodge-theoretic origin associated to irregular varieties. Our main tools are Saito's mixed Hodge modules, the Fourier-Mukai transform for D-modules on abelian varieties introduced by Laumon and Rothstein, and Simpson's harmonic theory for flat bundles. In the process, we discover two natural categories of perverse coherent sheaves, one on the Picard variety, and the other on the moduli space of Higgs line bundles or that of line bundles with flat connection.

Derivative complex, BGG correspondence, and numerical inequalities for compact Kähler manifolds

The cohomology algebra of the canonical bundle of a compact Kähler manifold is naturally viewed as a module over an exterior algebra. We use the Bernstein-Gel'fand-Gel'fand correspondence, together with Generic Vanishing theory, in order to understand the regularity properties of this module. We also relate it to the infinitesimal theory of the canonical linear series inside paracanonical space. Finally, we apply vector bundle methods on the polynomial ring side to obtain inequalities for the holomorphic Euler characteristic and the Hodge numbers of compact Kähler manifolds without irregular fibrations.

Derived invariance of the number of holomorphic 1-forms and vector fields

We prove that smooth projective varieties with equivalent derived categories have isogenous (and sometimes isomorphic) Picard varieties. In particular their irregularity and number of independent vector fields are the same. This is turn implies, in combination with the invariance of Hochschild homology, that all Hodge numbers are the same for arbitrary derived equivalent threefolds.

Generalized theta linear series on moduli spaces of vector bundles on curves

This article is based on lecture notes prepared for the August 2006 Cologne Summer School. The first part contains background material and references for beginners. The second (and main) part is a survey of the current status in the theory of pluri-theta linear series and generalized theta divisors on moduli spaces of vector bundles on curves. It emphasizes relatively new techniques employed in the analysis of linear series on these moduli spaces, namely the use of moduli spaces of stable maps for understanding Quot schemes, and the Fourier-Mukai functor in the study of coherent sheaves on abelian varieties. In addition, it briefly describes recent important developments, most significant of which is the proof of the Strange Duality conjecture due to Belkale and Marian-Oprea.

Stable maps and Quot schemes

In this paper we study the relationship between two different compactifications of the space of vector bundle quotients of an arbitrary vector bundle on a curve. One is Grothendieck's Quot scheme, while the other is a moduli space of stable maps to the relative Grassmannian. We establish an essentially optimal upper bound on the dimension of the two compactifications. Based on that, we prove that for an arbitrary vector bundle, the Quot schemes of quotients of large degree are irreducible and generically smooth. We precisely describe all the vector bundles for which the same thing holds in the case of the moduli spaces of stable maps. We show that there are in general no natural morphisms between the two compactifications. Finally, as an application, we obtain new cases of a conjecture on effective base point freeness for pluritheta linear series on moduli spaces of vector bundles.
