Hodge modules on complex tori and generic vanishing for compact Kähler manifolds

We extend the results of generic vanishing theory to polarizable real Hodge modules on compact complex tori, and from there to arbitrary compact Kähler manifolds. As applications, we obtain a bimeromorphic characterization of compact complex tori among compact Kähler manifolds, semi-positivity results, and a description of the Leray filtration for maps to tori.

Standard canonical support loci

We consider the union of certain irreducible components of cohomological support loci of the canonical bundle, which we call standard. We prove a structure theorem about them and single out some particular cases, recovering and improving results of Beauville and Chen-Jiang. Finally, as an example of application, we extend to compact Kahler manifolds the classification of smooth complex projective varieties with $p_1(X)=1$, $p_3(X)=2$ and $q(X)=\dim X$.

Gaussian maps and generic vanishing I: subvarieties of abelian varieties

We present an approach to Green-Lazarsfeld's generic vanishing combining gaussian maps and the Fourier-Mukai transform associated to the Poincarè line bundle. As an application we prove the Generic Vanishing Theorem for all normal Cohen-Macaulay subvarieties of abelian varieties over an algebraically closed field. This paper is a reworking of part of arXiv:math/0310026v2 [math.AG], which contained a mistake.

Generic vanishing, gaussian maps, and Fourier-Mukai transform

In the first part of this paper we prove a vanishing criterion for higher direct images of projective families of line bundles on a Cohen-Macaulay variety X. The result involves certain first-order deformations of certain curves on X, and makes essential use of the notion of global co-gaussian maps, a generalization of Wahl's gaussian maps. In the second part we apply the criterion above, combined with Fourier-Mukai transform on abelian varieties, to prove an algebraic version of Green-Lazarsfeld's Generic Vanishing Theorem. In fact we prove a stronger result concerning higher direct images of Poincaré line bundles, which -- in the compact Kähler setting -- was conjectured by Green and Lazarsfeld and was recently proved, by completely different methods, by Hacon (math.AG/0308198)

Hyperplane sections of abelian surfaces

By a theorem of Wahl, the canonically embedded curves which are hyperplane section of K3 surfaces are distinguished by the non-surjectivity of their Wahl map. In this paper we address the problem of distinguishing hyperplane sections of abelian surfaces. The somewhat surprising result is that the Wahl map of such curves is (tendentially) surjective, but their second Wahl map has corank at least 2 (in fact a more precise result is proved).
