Extending holomorphic forms from the regular locus of a complex space to a resolution of singularities

We investigate under what conditions holomorphic forms defined on the regular locus of a reduced complex space extend to holomorphic (or logarithmic) forms on a resolution of singularities. We give a simple necessary and sufficient condition for this, whose proof relies on the Decomposition Theorem and Saito's theory of mixed Hodge modules. We use it to generalize the theorem of Greb-Kebekus-Kovács-Peternell to complex spaces with rational singularities, and to prove the existence of a functorial pull-back for reflexive differentials on such spaces. We also use our methods to settle the "local vanishing conjecture" proposed by Mustaţă, Olano, and Popa.

Hodge modules on complex tori and generic vanishing for compact Kähler manifolds

We extend the results of generic vanishing theory to polarizable real Hodge modules on compact complex tori, and from there to arbitrary compact Kähler manifolds. As applications, we obtain a bimeromorphic characterization of compact complex tori among compact Kähler manifolds, semi-positivity results, and a description of the Leray filtration for maps to tori.

The Cremmer-Scherk Mechanism in F-theory Compactifications on K3 Manifolds

It is well understood --- through string dualities --- that there are 20 massless vector fields in the spectrum of eight-dimensional F-theory compactifications on smooth elliptically fibered K3 surfaces at a generic point in the K3 moduli space. Such F-theory vacua, which do not have any enhanced gauge symmetries, can be thought of as supersymmetric type IIB compactifications on P1 with 24 (p,q) seven-branes. Naively, one might expect there to be 24 massless vector fields in the eight-dimensional effective theory coming from world-volume gauge fields of the 24 branes. In this paper, we show how the vector field spectrum of the eight-dimensional effective theory can be obtained from the point of view of type IIB supergravity coupled to the world-volume theory of the seven-branes. In particular, we first show that the two-forms of the type IIB theory absorb the seven-brane world-volume gauge fields via the Cremmer-Scherk mechanism. We then proceed to show that the massless vector fields of the eight-dimensional theory come from KK-reducing the SL(2,Z) doublet two-forms of type IIB theory along SL(2,Z) doublet one-forms on the P1. We also discuss the relation between these vector fields and the "eaten" world-volume vector fields of the seven-branes.

Viehweg's hyperbolicity conjecture for families with maximal variation

We use the theory of Hodge modules to construct Viehweg-Zuo sheaves on the base spaces of families with maximal variation and fibers of general type, or more generally whose geometric generic fiber has a good minimal model. We deduce Viehweg's hyperbolicity conjecture in this context, namely the fact that the base spaces of such families are of log general type. This is approached as part of a general problem of identifying what spaces can support Hodge theoretic objects with certain positivity properties.

Fields of definition of Hodge loci

We show that an irreducible component of the Hodge locus of a polarizable variation of Hodge structure of weight 0 on a smooth complex variety X is defined over an algebraically closed subfield k of finite transcendence degree if X is defined over k and the component contains a k-rational point. We also prove a similar assertion for the Hodge locus inside the Hodge bundle if the Hodge bundle together with the connection is defined over k. This is closely related with the theory of absolute Hodge classes. The proof uses the spread of the Hodge locus, and is quite similar to the case of the zero locus of an admissible normal function.

Graded duality for filtered D-modules

For a coherent filtered D-module we show that the dual of each graded piece over the structure sheaf is isomorphic to a certain graded piece of the ring-theoretic local cohomology complex of the graded quotient of the dual of the filtered D-module along the zero-section of the cotangent bundle. This follows from a similar assertion for coherent graded modules over a polynomial algebra over the structure sheaf. We also prove that the local cohomology sheaves can be calculated by using the higher direct images of the twists of the associated sheaf complex on the projective cotangent bundle. These are closely related to local duality, essentially due to Grothendieck.

On direct images of pluricanonical bundles

We show that techniques inspired by Kollár and Viehweg's study of weak positivity, combined with vanishing theorems for log-canonical pairs, lead to new consequences regarding generation and vanishing properties for direct images of pluricanonical bundles. We formulate the strongest such results as Fujita conjecture-type statements, which are then shown to govern a range of fundamental properties of direct images of pluricanonical and pluriadjoint line bundles, like effective vanishing theorems, weak positivity, or generic vanishing.

The extended locus of Hodge classes

We introduce an "extended locus of Hodge classes" that also takes into account integral classes that become Hodge classes "in the limit". More precisely, given a polarized variation of integral Hodge structure of weight zero on a Zariski-open subset of a complex manifold, we construct a canonical analytic space that parametrizes limits of integral classes; the extended locus of Hodge classes is an analytic subspace that contains the usual locus of Hodge classes, but is finite and proper over the base manifold. The construction uses Saito's theory of mixed Hodge modules and a small generalization of the main technical result of Cattani, Deligne, and Kaplan. We study the properties of the resulting analytic space in the case of the family of hyperplane sections of an odd-dimensional smooth projective variety.

Torsion points on cohomology support loci: from D-modules to Simpson's theorem

We study cohomology support loci of regular holonomic D-modules on complex abelian varieties, and obtain conditions under which each irreducible component of such a locus contains a torsion point. One case is that both the D-module and the corresponding perverse sheaf are defined over a number field; another case is that the D-module underlies a grade-polarizable mixed Hodge module with a Z-structure. As a consequence, we obtain a new proof for Simpson's result that Green-Lazarsfeld sets are translates of subtori by torsion points.

Holonomic D-modules on abelian varieties

We study the Fourier-Mukai transform for holonomic D-modules on complex abelian varieties. Among other things, we show that the cohomology support loci of a holonomic D-module are finite unions of linear subvarieties, which go through points of finite order for objects of geometric origin; that the standard t-structure on the derived category of holonomic complexes corresponds, under the Fourier-Mukai transform, to a certain perverse coherent t-structure in the sense of Kashiwara and Arinkin-Bezrukavnikov; and that Fourier-Mukai transforms of simple holonomic D-modules are intersection complexes in this t-structure. This supports the conjecture that Fourier-Mukai transforms of holonomic D-modules are "hyperkähler perverse sheaves".

Generic vanishing theory via mixed Hodge modules

We extend the dimension and strong linearity results of generic vanishing theory to bundles of holomorphic forms and rank one local systems, and more generally to certain coherent sheaves of Hodge-theoretic origin associated to irregular varieties. Our main tools are Saito's mixed Hodge modules, the Fourier-Mukai transform for D-modules on abelian varieties introduced by Laumon and Rothstein, and Simpson's harmonic theory for flat bundles. In the process, we discover two natural categories of perverse coherent sheaves, one on the Picard variety, and the other on the moduli space of Higgs line bundles or that of line bundles with flat connection.

Holonomic complexes on abelian varieties, Part I

We study the Fourier-Mukai transform for holonomic D-modules on a complex abelian variety. Among other things, we show that the cohomology support loci of a holonomic complex are finite unions of translates of triple tori, the translates being by torsion points for objects of geometric origin; and that the standard t-structure on the derived category of holonomic complexes corresponds, under the Fourier-Mukai transform, to a certain perverse coherent t-structure in the sense of Kashiwara and Arinkin-Bezrukavnikov.

A variant of Neron models over curves

We study a variant of the Neron models over curves which is recently found by the second named author in a more general situation using the theory of Hodge modules. We show that its identity component is a certain open subset of an iterated blow-up along smooth centers of the Zucker extension of the family of intermediate Jacobians and that the total space is a complex Lie group over the base curve and is Hausdorff as a topological space. In the unipotent monodromy case, the image of the map to the Clemens extension coincides with the Neron model defined by Green, Griffiths and Kerr. In the case of families of Abelian varieties over curves, it coincides with the Clemens extension, and hence with the classical Néron model in the algebraic case (even in the non-unipotent monodromy case).

preprint2010arXiv

Complex-analytic Neron models for arbitrary families of intermediate Jacobians

Given a family of intermediate Jacobians (for a polarized variation of Hodge structure of weight -1) on a Zariski-open subset of a complex manifold, we construct an analytic space that naturally extends the family. Its two main properties are: (a) the horizontal and holomorphic sections are precisely the admissible normal functions without singularities; (b) the graph of any admissible normal function has an analytic closure inside our space. As a consequence, we obtain a new proof for the zero locus conjecture of M. Green and P. Griffiths. The construction uses filtered D-modules and M. Saito's theory of mixed Hodge modules; it is functorial, and does not require normal crossing or unipotent monodromy assumptions.

Derived invariance of the number of holomorphic 1-forms and vector fields

We prove that smooth projective varieties with equivalent derived categories have isogenous (and sometimes isomorphic) Picard varieties. In particular their irregularity and number of independent vector fields are the same. This is turn implies, in combination with the invariance of Hochschild homology, that all Hodge numbers are the same for arbitrary derived equivalent threefolds.

Residues and filtered D-modules

For an embedding of sufficiently high degree of a smooth projective variety X into projective space, we use residues to define a filtered holonomic D-module (M, F) on the dual projective space. This gives a concrete description of the intermediate extension to a Hodge module on P of the variation of Hodge structure on the middle-dimensional cohomology of the hyperplane sections of X. We also establish many results about the sheaves F_k M, such as positivity, vanishing theorems, or reflexivity.
