Dualizing spheres for compact $p$-adic analytic groups and duality in chromatic homotopy

The primary goal of this paper is to study Spanier-Whitehead duality in the $K(n)$-local category. One of the key players in the $K(n)$-local category is the Lubin-Tate spectrum $E_n$, whose homotopy groups classify deformations of a formal group law of height $n$, in the implicit characteristic $p$. It is known that $E_n$ is self-dual up to a shift; however, that does not fully take into account the action of the Morava stabilizer group $\mathbb{G}_n$, or even its subgroup of automorphisms of the formal group in question. In this paper we find that the $\mathbb{G}_n$-equivariant dual of $E_n$ is in fact $E_n$ twisted by a sphere with a non-trivial (when $n>1$) action by $\mathbb{G}_n$. This sphere is a dualizing module for the group $\mathbb{G}_n$, and we construct and study such an object $I_{\mathcal{G}}$ for any compact $p$-adic analytic group $\mathcal{G}$. If we restrict the action of $\mathcal{G}$ on $I_{\mathcal{G}}$ to certain type of small subgroups, we identify $I_{\mathcal{G}}$ with a specific representation sphere coming from the Lie algebra of $\mathcal{G}$. This is done by a classification of $p$-complete sphere spectra with an action by an elementary abelian $p$-group in terms of characteristic classes, and then a specific comparison of the characteristic classes in question. The setup makes the theory quite accessible for computations, as we demonstrate in the later sections of this paper, determining the $K(n)$-local Spanier-Whitehead duals of $E_n^{hH}$ for select choices of $p$ and $n$ and finite subgroups $H$ of $\mathbb{G}_n$.

Localization and nilpotent spaces in A^1-homotopy theory

For a subring $R$ of the rational numbers, we study $R$-localization functors in the local homotopy theory of simplicial presheaves on a small site and then in ${\mathbb A}^1$-homotopy theory. To this end, we introduce and analyze two notions of nilpotence for spaces in ${\mathbb A}^1$-homotopy theory paying attention to future applications for vector bundles. We show that $R$-localization behaves in a controlled fashion for the nilpotent spaces we consider. We show that the classifying space $BGL_n$ is ${\mathbb A}^1$-nilpotent when $n$ is odd, and analyze the (more complicated) situation where $n$ is even as well. We establish analogs of various classical results about rationalization in the context of ${\mathbb A}^1$-homotopy theory: if $-1$ is a sum of squares in the base field, ${\mathbb A}^n \setminus 0$ is rationally equivalent to a suitable motivic Eilenberg--Mac Lane space, and the special linear group decomposes as a product of motivic spheres.

Consistency of M-Theory on nonorientable manifolds

We prove that there is no parity anomaly in M-theory in the low-energy field theory approximation. Our approach is computational. We determine generators for the 12-dimensional bordism group of pin manifolds with a w_1-twisted integer lift of w_4; these are the manifolds on which Wick-rotated M-theory exists. The anomaly cancellation comes down to computing a specific eta-invariant and cubic form on these manifolds. Of interest beyond this specific problem are our expositions of: computational techniques for eta-invariants, the algebraic theory of cubic forms, Adams spectral sequence techniques, and anomalies for spinor fields and Rarita-Schwinger fields.

Equivariant symmetric monoidal structures

Building on structure observed in equivariant homotopy theory, we define an equivariant generalization of a symmetric monoidal category: a $G$-symmetric monoidal category. These record not only the symmetric monoidal products but also symmetric monoidal powers indexed by arbitrary finite $G$-sets. We then define $G$-commutative monoids to be the natural extension of ordinary commutative monoids to this new context. Using this machinery, we then describe when Bousfield localization in equivariant spectra preserves certain operadic algebra structures, and we explore the consequences of our definitions for categories of modules over a $G$-commutative monoid.

The slice spectral sequence for the $C_{4}$ analog of real $K$-theory

We describe the slice spectral sequence of a 32-periodic $C_{4}$-spectrum $K_{[2]}$ related to the $C_{4}$ norm ${N_{C_{2}}^{C_{4}}MU_{\bf R}}$ of the real cobordism spectrum $MU_{\bf R}$. We will give it as a spectral sequence of Mackey functors converging to the graded Mackey functor $\underline{π}_{*}K_{[2]}$, complete with differentials and exotic extensions in the Mackey functor structure. The slice spectral sequence for the 8-periodic real $K$-theory spectrum $K_{\bf R}$ was first analyzed by Dugger. The $C_{8}$ analog of $K_{[2]}$ is 256-periodic and detects the Kervaire invariant classes $θ_{j}$ in the stable homotopy groups of spheres. A partial analysis of its slice spectral sequence led to the solution to the Kervaire invariant problem, namely the theorem that $θ_{j}$ does not exist for $j\geq 7$.

The Slice Spectral Sequence for certain $RO(C_{p^n})$-graded Suspensions of $H\underline{\mathbb Z}$

We study the slice filtration and associated spectral sequence for a family of $RO(C_{p^{n}})$-graded suspensions of the Eilenberg-MacLane spectrum for the constant Mackey functor $\underline{\mathbb Z}$. Since $H\underline{\mathbb Z}$ is the zero slice of the sphere spectrum, this begins an analysis of how one can describe the slices of a suspension in terms of the original slices.

An $\infty$-categorical approach to $R$-line bundles, $R$-module Thom spectra, and twisted $R$-homology

We develop a generalization of the theory of Thom spectra using the language of infinity categories. This treatment exposes the conceptual underpinnings of the Thom spectrum functor: we use a new model of parametrized spectra, and our definition is motivated by the geometric definition of Thom spectra of May-Sigurdsson. For an associative ring spectrum $R$, we associate a Thom spectrum to a map of infinity categories from the infinity groupoid of a space $X$ to the infinity category of free rank one $R$-modules, which we show is a model for $BGL_1 R$; we show that $BGL_1 R$ classifies homotopy sheaves of rank one $R$-modules, which we call $R$-line bundles. We use our $R$-module Thom spectrum to define the twisted $R$-homology and cohomology of an $R$-line bundle over a space $X$, classified by a map from $X$ to $BGL_1 R$, and we recover the generalized theory of orientations in this context. In order to compare this approach to the classical theory, we characterize the Thom spectrum functor axiomatically, from the perspective of Morita theory. An earlier version of this paper was part of arXiv:0810.4535.

Chern-Weil forms and abstract homotopy theory

We prove that Chern-Weil forms are the only natural differential forms associated to a connection on a principal G-bundle. We use the homotopy theory of simplicial sheaves on smooth manifolds to formulate the theorem and set up the proof. Other arguments come from classical invariant theory. We identify the Weil algebra as the de Rham complex of a specific simplicial sheaf, and similarly give a new interpretation of the Weil model in equivariant de Rham theory. There is an appendix proving a general theorem about set-theoretic transformations of polynomial functors. This paper is dedicated to the memory of Dan Quillen.

Equivariant Multiplicative Closure

This paper describes an issue that arises when inverting elements of the homotopy groups of an equivariant commutative ring. Equivariant commutative rings possess an enhanced multiplicative structure arising from the presence of "indexed products" (products indexed by a set with a non-trivial action of the group). The formation of the "multiplicative closure" of a set must be altered in order to accomodate this structure, and the result of localizing an equivariant commutative ring can have an unexpected homotopy type.

Loop Groups and Twisted K-Theory II

This is the second in a series of papers investigating the relationship between the twisted equivariant K-theory of a compact Lie group G and the "Verlinde ring" of its loop group. We introduce the Dirac family of Fredholm operators associated to a positive energy representation of a loop group. It determines a map from isomorphism classes of representations to twisted K-theory, which we prove is an isomorphism if $G$ is connected with torsion-free fundamental group. We also introduce a Dirac family for finite dimensional representations of compact Lie groups; it is closely related to both the Kirillov correspondence and the equivariant Thom isomorphism. In Part III (math.AT/0312155) we extend the proof of our main theorem to arbitrary compact Lie groups G and provide supplements in various directions. In Part I (arXiv:0711.1906) we develop twisted equivariant K-theory and carry out some of the computations needed here. We refer to the announcements math.AT/0312155 and math.AT/0206237 for further expository material and motivation.

Higher real K-theories and topological automorphic forms

Given a maximal finite subgroup G of the nth Morava stabilizer group at a prime p, we address the question: is the associated higher real K-theory EO_n a summand of the K(n)-localization of a TAF-spectrum associated to a unitary similitude group of type U(1,n-1)? We answer this question in the affirmative for p in {2, 3, 5, 7} and n = (p-1)p^{r-1} for a maximal finite subgroup containing an element of order p^r. We answer the question in the negative for all other odd primary cases. In all odd primary cases, we to give an explicit presentation of a global division algebra with involution in which the group G embeds unitarily.

Loop groups and twisted K-theory I

This is the first in a series of papers investigating the relationship between the twisted equivariant K-theory of a compact Lie group G and the "Verlinde ring" of its loop group. In this paper we set up the foundations of twisted equivariant K-groups, and more generally twisted K-theory of groupoids. We establish enough basic properties to make effective computations. Using the Mayer-Vietoris spectral sequence we compute the twisted equivariant K-groups of a compact connected Lie group G with torsion free fundamental group. We relate this computation to the representation theory of the loop group at a level related to the twisting.

Twisted equivariant K-theory with complex coefficients

Using a global version of the equivariant Chern character, we describe the complexified twisted equivariant K-theory of a space with a compact Lie group action in terms of fixed-point data. We apply this to the case of a compact Lie group acting on itself by conjugation, and relate the result to the Verlinde algebra and to the Kac numerator at q=1. Verlinde's formula is also discussed in this context.
