Learning Partial Differential Equations by Spectral Approximates of General Sobolev Spaces

We introduce a novel spectral, finite-dimensional approximation of general Sobolev spaces in terms of Chebyshev polynomials. Based on this polynomial surrogate model (PSM), we realise a variational formulation, solving a vast class of linear and non-linear partial differential equations (PDEs). The PSMs are as flexible as the physics-informed neural nets (PINNs) and provide an alternative for addressing inverse PDE problems, such as PDE-parameter inference. In contrast to PINNs, the PSMs result in a convex optimisation problem for a vast class of PDEs, including all linear ones, in which case the PSM-approximate is efficiently computable due to the exponential convergence rate of the underlying variational gradient descent. As a practical consequence prominent PDE problems were resolved by the PSMs without High Performance Computing (HPC) on a local machine. This gain in efficiency is complemented by an increase of approximation power, outperforming PINN alternatives in both accuracy and runtime. Beyond the empirical evidence we give here, the translation of classic PDE theory in terms of the Sobolev space approximates suggests the PSMs to be universally applicable to well-posed, regular forward and inverse PDE problems.

Multivariate Newton Interpolation

For $m,n \in \mathbb{N}$, $m\geq 1$ and a given function $f : \mathbb{R}^m\longrightarrow \mathbb{R}$, the polynomial interpolation problem (PIP) is to determine a unisolvent node set $P_{m,n} \subseteq \mathbb{R}^m$ of $N(m,n):=|P_{m,n}|=\binom{m+n}{n}$ points and the uniquely defined polynomial $Q_{m,n,f}\in Π_{m,n}$ in $m$ variables of degree $\mathrm{deg}(Q_{m,n,f})\leq n \in \mathbb{N}$ that fits $f$ on $P_{m,n}$, i.e., $Q_{m,n,f}(p) = f(p)$, $\forall\, p \in P_{m,n}$. For $m=1$ the solution to the PIP is well known. In higher dimensions, however, no closed framework was available. We here present a generalization of the classic Newton interpolation from one-dimensional to arbitrary-dimensional spaces. Further we formulate an algorithm, termed PIP-SOLVER, based on a multivariate divided difference scheme that computes the solution $Q_{m,n,f}$ in $\mathcal{O}\big(N(m,n)^2\big)$ time using $\mathcal{O}\big(mN(m,n)\big)$ memory. Further, we introduce unisolvent Newton-Chebyshev nodes and show that these nodes avoid Runge's phenomenon in the sense that arbitrary periodic Sobolev functions $f \in H^k(Ω,\mathbb{R}) \subsetneq C^0(Ω,\mathbb{R})$, $Ω=[-1,1]^m$ of regularity $k >m/2$ can be uniformly approximated, i.e., $ \lim_{n\rightarrow \infty}||\,f -Q_{m,n,f} \,||_{C^0(Ω)}= 0$. Numerical experiments demonstrate the computational performance and approximation accuracy of the PIP-SOLVER in practice. We expect the presented results to be relevant for many applications, including numerical solvers, quadrature, non-linear optimization, polynomial regression, adaptive sampling, Bayesian inference, and spectral analysis.

High-Angular-Resolution and High-Sensitivity Science Enabled by Beamformed ALMA

An international consortium is presently constructing a beamformer for the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile that will be available as a facility instrument. The beamformer will aggregate the entire collecting area of the array into a single, very large aperture. The extraordinary sensitivity of phased ALMA, combined with the extremely fine angular resolution available on baselines to the Northern Hemisphere, will enable transformational new very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations in Bands 6 and 7 (1.3 and 0.8 mm) and provide substantial improvements to existing VLBI arrays in Bands 1 and 3 (7 and 3 mm). The ALMA beamformer will have impact on a variety of scientific topics, including accretion and outflow processes around black holes in active galactic nuclei (AGN), tests of general relativity near black holes, jet launch and collimation from AGN and microquasars, pulsar and magnetar emission processes, the chemical history of the universe and the evolution of fundamental constants across cosmic time, maser science, and astrometry.

Isomorphic chain complexes of Hamiltonian dynamics on tori

In this work we construct for a given smooth, generic Hamiltonian $H : \mathbb{S}^1\times\mathbb{T}^n \longrightarrow \mathbb{R}$ on the torus a chain isomorphism $ Φ_* : \big(C_*(H),\partial^M_*\big) \longrightarrow \big(C_*(H),\partial^F_*\big)$ between the Morse complex of the Hamiltonian action $A_H$ on the free loop space of the torus $Λ_0(\mathbb{T}^n)$ and the Floer complex. Though both complexes are generated by the critical points of $A_H$, their boundary operators differ. Therefore the construction of $Φ$ is based on counting the moduli spaces of hybrid type solutions which involves stating a new non-Lagrangian boundary value problem for Cauchy-Riemann type operators not yet studied in Floer theory.

Flat Connections in Open String Mirror Symmetry

We study a flat connection defined on the open-closed deformation space of open string mirror symmetry for type II compactifications on Calabi-Yau threefolds with D-branes. We use flatness and integrability conditions to define distinguished flat coordinates and the superpotential function at an arbitrary point in the open-closed deformation space. Integrability conditions are given for concrete deformation spaces with several closed and open string deformations. We study explicit examples for expansions around different limit points, including orbifold Gromov-Witten invariants, and brane configurations with several brane moduli. In particular, the latter case covers stacks of parallel branes with non-Abelian symmetry.

Type II/F-theory Superpotentials with Several Deformations and N=1 Mirror Symmetry

We present a detailed study of D-brane superpotentials depending on several open and closed-string deformations. The relative cohomology group associated with the brane defines a generalized hypergeometric GKZ system which determines the off-shell superpotential and its analytic properties under deformation. Explicit expressions for the N=1 superpotential for families of type II/F-theory compactifications are obtained for a list of multi-parameter examples. Using the Hodge theoretic approach to open-string mirror symmetry, we obtain new predictions for integral disc invariants in the A model instanton expansion. We study the behavior of the brane vacua under extremal transitions between different Calabi-Yau spaces and observe that the web of Calabi-Yau vacua remains connected for a particular class of branes.

Hints for Off-Shell Mirror Symmetry in type II/F-theory Compactifications

We perform a Hodge theoretic study of parameter dependent families of D-branes on compact Calabi-Yau manifolds in type II and F-theory compactifcations. Starting from a geometric Gauss-Manin connection for B type branes we study the integrability and flatness conditions. The B model geometry defines an interesting ring structure of operators. For the mirror A model this indicates the existence of an open-string extension of the so-called A model connection, whereas the discovered ring structure should be part of the open-string A model quantum cohomology. We obtain predictions for genuine Ooguri-Vafa invariants for Lagrangian branes on the quintic in P4 that pass some non-trivial consistency checks. We discuss the lift of the brane compactifications to F-theory on Calabi-Yau 4-folds and the effective couplings in the effective supergravity action as determined by the N = 1 special geometry of the open-closed deformation space.

Wall-crossing holomorphic anomaly and mock modularity of multiple M5-branes

Using wall-crossing formulae and the theory of mock modular forms we derive a holomorphic anomaly equation for the modified elliptic genus of two M5-branes wrapping a rigid divisor inside a Calabi-Yau manifold. The anomaly originates from restoring modularity of an indefinite theta-function capturing the wall-crossing of BPS invariants associated to D4-D2-D0 brane systems. We show the compatibility of this equation with anomaly equations previously observed in the context of N=4 topological Yang-Mills theory on P^2 and E-strings obtained from wrapping M5-branes on a del Pezzo surface. The non-holomorphic part is related to the contribution originating from bound-states of singly wrapped M5-branes on the divisor. We show in examples that the information provided by the anomaly is enough to compute the BPS degeneracies for certain charges. We further speculate on a natural extension of the anomaly to higher D4-brane charge.
