BPS Indices, Modularity and Perturbations in Quantum K-theory

We study a perturbation family of N=2 3d gauge theories and its relation to quantum K-theory. A 3d version of the Intriligator-Vafa formula is given for the quantum K-theory ring of Grassmannians. The 3d BPS half-index of the gauge theory is connected to the theory of bilateral hypergeometric q-series, and to modular q-characters of a class of conformal field theories in a certain massless limit. Turning on 3d Wilson lines at torsion points leads to mock modular behavior. Perturbed correlators in the IR regime are computed by determining the UV-IR map in the presence of deformations.

Quantum K-Theory of Calabi-Yau Manifolds

The disk partition function of certain 3d N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories computes a quantum K-theoretic ring for Kahler manifolds X. We study the 3d gauge theory/quantum K-theory correspondence for global and local Calabi-Yau manifolds with several Kahler moduli. We propose a multi-cover formula that relates the 3d BPS world-volume degeneracies computed by quantum K-theory to Gopakumar-Vafa invariants.

Dual Pairs of Gauged Linear Sigma Models and Derived Equivalences of Calabi-Yau threefolds

In this work we study the phase structure of skew symplectic sigma models, which are a certain class of two-dimensional N = (2,2) non-Abelian gauged linear sigma models. At low energies some of them flow to non-linear sigma models with Calabi-Yau target spaces, which emerge from non-Abelian strong coupling dynamics. The observed phase structure results in a non-trivial duality proposal among skew symplectic sigma models and connects non-complete intersection Calabi-Yau threefolds, that are non-birational among another, in a common quantum Kahler moduli space. As a consequence we find non-trivial identifications of spectra of topological B-branes, which from a modern algebraic geometry perspective imply derived equivalences among Calabi-Yau varieties. To further support our proposals, we calculate the two sphere partition function of skew symplectic sigma models to determine geometric invariants, which confirm the anticipated Calabi-Yau threefold phases. We show that the two sphere partition functions of a pair of dual skew symplectic sigma models agree in a non-trivial fashion. To carry out these calculations, we develop a systematic approach to study higher-dimensional Mellin-Barnes type integrals. In particular, these techniques admit the evaluation of two sphere partition functions for gauged linear sigma models with higher rank gauge groups, but are applicable in other contexts as well.

Quantum periods of Calabi-Yau fourfolds

In this work we study the quantum periods together with their Picard-Fuchs differential equations of Calabi-Yau fourfolds. In contrast to Calabi-Yau threefolds, we argue that the large volume points of Calabi-Yau fourfolds generically are regular singular points of the Picard-Fuchs operators of non-maximally unipotent monodromy. We demonstrate this property in explicit examples of Calabi-Yau fourfolds with a single Kahler modulus. For these examples we construct integral quantum periods and study their global properties in the quantum Kahler moduli space with the help of numerical analytic continuation techniques. Furthermore, we determine their genus zero Gromov-Witten invariants, their Klemm-Pandharipande meeting invariants, and their genus one BPS invariants. In our computations we emphasize the features attributed to the non-maximally unipotent monodromy property. For instance, it implies the existence of integral quantum periods that at large volume are purely worldsheet instanton generated. To verify our results, we also present intersection theory techniques to enumerate lines with a marked point on complete intersection Calabi-Yau fourfolds in Grassmannian varieties.

A note on colored HOMFLY polynomials for hyperbolic knots from WZW models

Using the correspondence between Chern-Simons theories and Wess-Zumino-Witten models we present the necessary tools to calculate colored HOMFLY polynomials for hyperbolic knots. For two-bridge hyperbolic knots we derive the colored HOMFLY invariants in terms of crossing matrices of the underlying Wess-Zumino-Witten model. Our analysis extends previous works by incorporating non-trivial multiplicities for the primaries appearing in the crossing matrices, so as to describe colorings of HOMFLY invariants beyond the totally symmetric or anti-symmetric representations of SU(N). The crossing matrices directly relate to 6j-symbols of the quantum group U_q(su(N)). We present powerful methods to calculate such quantum 6j-symbols for general N. This allows us to determine previously unknown colored HOMFLY polynomials for two-bridge hyperbolic knots. We give explicitly the HOMFLY polynomials colored by the representation {2,1} for two-bridge hyperbolic knots with up to eight crossings. Yet, the scope of application of our techniques goes beyond knot theory; e.g., our findings can be used to study correlators in Wess-Zumino-Witten conformal field theories or -- in the limit to classical groups -- to determine color factors for Yang Mills amplitudes.

Non-Geometric F-Theory-Heterotic Duality

In this work we study the duality between F-theory and the heterotic string beyond the stable degeneration limit in F-theory and large fiber limit in the heterotic theory. Building upon a recent proposal by Clingher-Doran and Malmendier-Morrison, which phrases the duality on the heterotic side for a particular class of models in terms of (fibered) genus two curves as non-geometric heterotic compactifications - we establish the precise limit to the semi-classical heterotic string in both eight and lower space-time dimensions. In particular for six dimensional theories, we argue that this class of non-geometric heterotic compactifications capture alpha'-quantum corrections to the semi-classical heterotic supergravity compactifications on elliptically fibered K3 surfaces. From the non-geometric heterotic theory, the semi-classical phase on the K3 surface is recovered from a remarkable limit of genus two Siegel modular forms combined with a geometric surgery operation. Finally, in four dimensions we analyze another limit deep in the quantum regime of the non-geometric heterotic string, which we refer to as the heterotic Sen limit. In this limit we can explicitly argue that the semi-classical two-staged fibrational structure of the heterotic hypermultiplet moduli space - recently established by Alexandrov, Louis, Pioline and Valandro - gets corrected by quantum effects.

Knot Invariants from Topological Recursion on Augmentation Varieties

Using the duality between Wilson loop expectation values of SU(N) Chern-Simons theory on $S^3$ and topological open-string amplitudes on the local mirror of the resolved conifold, we study knots on $S^3$ and their invariants encoded in colored HOMFLY polynomials by means of topological recursion. In the context of the local mirror Calabi-Yau threefold of the resolved conifold, we generalize the topological recursion of the remodelled B-model in order to study branes beyond the class of toric Harvey-Lawson special Lagrangians -- as required for analyzing non-trivial knots on $S^3$. The basic ingredients for the proposed recursion are the spectral curve, given by the augmentation variety of the knot, and the calibrated annulus kernel, encoding the topological annulus amplitudes associated to the knot. We present an explicit construction of the calibrated annulus kernel for torus knots and demonstrate the validity of the topological recursion. We further argue that -- if an explicit form of the calibrated annulus kernel is provided for any other knot -- the proposed topological recursion should still be applicable. We study the implications of our proposal for knot theory, which exhibit interesting consequences for colored HOMFLY polynomials of mutant knots.

Perturbative Corrections to Kahler Moduli Spaces

We propose a general formula for perturbative-in-alpha' corrections to the Kahler potential on the quantum Kahler moduli space of Calabi-Yau n-folds, for any n, in their asymptotic large volume regime. The knowledge of such perturbative corrections provides an important ingredient needed to analyze the full structure of this Kahler potential, including nonperturbative corrections such as the Gromov-Witten invariants of the Calabi-Yau n-folds. We argue that the perturbative corrections take a universal form, and we find that this form is encapsulated in a specific additive characteristic class of the Calabi-Yau n-fold which we call the log Gamma class, and which arises naturally in a generalization of Mukai's modified Chern character map. Our proposal is inspired heavily by the recent observation of an equality between the partition function of certain supersymmetric, two-dimensional gauge theories on a two-sphere, and the aforementioned Kahler potential. We further strengthen our proposal by comparing our findings on the quantum Kahler moduli space to the complex structure moduli space of the corresponding mirror Calabi-Yau geometry.

Two-Sphere Partition Functions and Gromov-Witten Invariants

Many N=(2,2) two-dimensional nonlinear sigma models with Calabi-Yau target spaces admit ultraviolet descriptions as N=(2,2) gauge theories (gauged linear sigma models). We conjecture that the two-sphere partition function of such ultraviolet gauge theories -- recently computed via localization by Benini et al. and Doroud et al. -- yields the exact Kähler potential on the quantum Kähler moduli space for Calabi-Yau threefold target spaces. In particular, this allows one to compute the genus zero Gromov-Witten invariants for any such Calabi-Yau threefold without the use of mirror symmetry. More generally, when the infrared superconformal fixed point is used to compactify string theory, this provides a direct method to compute the spacetime Kähler potential of certain moduli (e.g., vector multiplet moduli in type IIA), exactly in α'. We compute these quantities for the quintic and for Rødland's Pfaffian Calabi-Yau threefold and find agreement with existing results in the literature. We then apply our methods to a codimension four determinantal Calabi-Yau threefold in P^7, recently given a nonabelian gauge theory description by the present authors, for which no mirror Calabi-Yau is currently known. We derive predictions for its Gromov-Witten invariants and verify that our predictions satisfy nontrivial geometric checks.

Conifold Transitions in M-theory on Calabi-Yau Fourfolds with Background Fluxes

We consider topology changing transitions for M-theory compactifications on Calabi-Yau fourfolds with background G-flux. The local geometry of the transition is generically a genus g curve of conifold singularities, which engineers a 3d gauge theory with four supercharges, near the intersection of Coulomb and Higgs branches. We identify a set of canonical, minimal flux quanta which solve the local quantization condition on G for a given geometry, including new solutions in which the flux is neither of horizontal nor vertical type. A local analysis of the flux superpotential shows that the potential has flat directions for a subset of these fluxes and the topologically different phases can be dynamically connected. For special geometries and background configurations, the local transitions extend to extremal transitions between global fourfold compactifications with flux. By a circle decompactification the M-theory analysis identifies consistent flux configurations in four-dimensional F-theory compactifications and flat directions in the deformation space of branes with bundles.

Flat Connections in Open String Mirror Symmetry

We study a flat connection defined on the open-closed deformation space of open string mirror symmetry for type II compactifications on Calabi-Yau threefolds with D-branes. We use flatness and integrability conditions to define distinguished flat coordinates and the superpotential function at an arbitrary point in the open-closed deformation space. Integrability conditions are given for concrete deformation spaces with several closed and open string deformations. We study explicit examples for expansions around different limit points, including orbifold Gromov-Witten invariants, and brane configurations with several brane moduli. In particular, the latter case covers stacks of parallel branes with non-Abelian symmetry.

Nonabelian 2D Gauge Theories for Determinantal Calabi-Yau Varieties

The two-dimensional supersymmetric gauged linear sigma model (GLSM) with abelian gauge groups and matter fields has provided many insights into string theory on Calabi--Yau manifolds of a certain type: complete intersections in toric varieties. In this paper, we consider two GLSM constructions with nonabelian gauge groups and charged matter whose infrared CFTs correspond to string propagation on determinantal Calabi-Yau varieties, furnishing another broad class of Calabi-Yau geometries in addition to complete intersections. We show that these two models -- which we refer to as the PAX and the PAXY model -- are dual descriptions of the same low-energy physics. Using GLSM techniques, we determine the quantum Kähler moduli space of these varieties and find no disagreement with existing results in the literature.

Torus Knots and the Topological Vertex

We propose a class of toric Lagrangian A-branes on the resolved conifold that is suitable to describe torus knots on S^3. The key role is played by the SL(2,Z) transformation, which generates a general torus knot from the unknot. Applying the topological vertex to the proposed A-branes, we rederive the colored HOMFLY polynomials for torus knots, in agreement with the Rosso and Jones formula. We show that our A-model construction is mirror symmetric to the B-model analysis of Brini, Eynard and Marino. Comparing to the recent proposal by Aganagic and Vafa for knots on S^3, we demonstrate that the disk amplitude of the A-brane associated to any knot is sufficient to reconstruct the entire B-model spectral curve. Finally, the construction of toric Lagrangian A-branes is generalized to other local toric Calabi-Yau geometries, which paves the road to study knots in other three-manifolds such as lens spaces.

N=1 Sigma Models in AdS_4

We study sigma models in AdS_4 with global N=1 supersymmetry and find that they differ significantly from their flat-space cousins -- the target space is constrained to be a Kahler manifold with an exact Kahler form, the superpotential transforms under Kahler transformations, the space of supersymmetric vacua is generically a set of isolated points even when the superpotential vanishes, and the R-symmetry is classically broken by the cosmological constant. Remarkably, the exactness of the Kahler class is also required for the sigma model to arise as a decoupling limit of N=1 supergravity, and ensures the vanishing of gravitational anomalies. As simple applications of these results, we argue that fields with AdS_4 scale masses are ubiquitous in, for example, type IIB N=1 AdS_4 vacua stabilized near large volume; we also show that the Affleck-Dine-Seiberg runaway of N_f < N_c SQCD is regulated by considering the theory in AdS_4.

Type II/F-theory Superpotentials with Several Deformations and N=1 Mirror Symmetry

We present a detailed study of D-brane superpotentials depending on several open and closed-string deformations. The relative cohomology group associated with the brane defines a generalized hypergeometric GKZ system which determines the off-shell superpotential and its analytic properties under deformation. Explicit expressions for the N=1 superpotential for families of type II/F-theory compactifications are obtained for a list of multi-parameter examples. Using the Hodge theoretic approach to open-string mirror symmetry, we obtain new predictions for integral disc invariants in the A model instanton expansion. We study the behavior of the brane vacua under extremal transitions between different Calabi-Yau spaces and observe that the web of Calabi-Yau vacua remains connected for a particular class of branes.

Hints for Off-Shell Mirror Symmetry in type II/F-theory Compactifications

We perform a Hodge theoretic study of parameter dependent families of D-branes on compact Calabi-Yau manifolds in type II and F-theory compactifcations. Starting from a geometric Gauss-Manin connection for B type branes we study the integrability and flatness conditions. The B model geometry defines an interesting ring structure of operators. For the mirror A model this indicates the existence of an open-string extension of the so-called A model connection, whereas the discovered ring structure should be part of the open-string A model quantum cohomology. We obtain predictions for genuine Ooguri-Vafa invariants for Lagrangian branes on the quintic in P4 that pass some non-trivial consistency checks. We discuss the lift of the brane compactifications to F-theory on Calabi-Yau 4-folds and the effective couplings in the effective supergravity action as determined by the N = 1 special geometry of the open-closed deformation space.

On N=1 4d Effective Couplings for F-theory and Heterotic Vacua

We show that certain superpotential and Kahler potential couplings of N=1 supersymmetric compactifications with branes or bundles can be computed from Hodge theory and mirror symmetry. This applies to F-theory on a Calabi-Yau four-fold and three-fold compactifications of type II and heterotic strings with branes. The heterotic case includes a class of bundles on elliptic manifolds constructed by Friedmann, Morgan and Witten. Mirror symmetry of the four-fold computes non-perturbative corrections to mirror symmetry on the three-folds, including D-instanton corrections. We also propose a physical interpretation for the observation by Warner that relates the deformation spaces of certain matrix factorizations and the periods of non-compact 4-folds that are ALE fibrations.

Defects and D-Brane Monodromies

In this paper D-brane monodromies are studied from a world-sheet point of view. More precisely, defect lines are used to describe the parallel transport of D-branes along deformations of the underlying bulk conformal field theories. This method is used to derive B-brane monodromies in Kahler moduli spaces of non-linear sigma models on projective hypersurfaces. The corresponding defects are constructed at Landau-Ginzburg points in these moduli spaces where matrix factorisation techniques can be used. Transporting them to the large volume phase by means of the gauged linear sigma model we find that their action on B-branes at large volume can be described by certain Fourier-Mukai transformations which are known from target space geometric considerations to represent the corresponding monodromies.

Effective superpotentials for B-branes in Landau-Ginzburg models

We compute the partition function for the topological Landau-Ginzburg B-model on the disk. This is done by treating the worldsheet superpotential perturbatively. We argue that this partition function as a function of bulk and boundary perturbations may be identified with the effective D-brane superpotential in the target spacetime. We point out the relationship of this approach to matrix factorizations. Using these methods, we prove a conjecture for the effective superpotential of Herbst, Lazaroiu and Lerche for the A-type minimal models. We also consider the Landau-Ginzburg theory of the cubic torus where we show that the effective superpotential, given by the partition function, is consistent with the one obtained by summing up disk instantons in the mirror A-model. This is done by explicitly constructing the open-string mirror map.

D-terms and F-terms from D7-brane fluxes

Using a Kaluza-Klein reduction of the fermionic part of the D-brane action we compute D- and F-terms of the N=1 effective action for generic Calabi-Yau orientifold compactifications in the presence of a space-time filling D7-brane. We include non-trivial background fluxes for the D7-brane U(1) field strength on the internal four-cycle wrapped by the brane. First the four-dimensional fermionic spectrum arising from the D7-brane is derived and then the D- and F-terms are obtained by computing appropriate couplings of these fermionic fields. For specific examples we examine the resulting flux-induced scalar potentials and comment on their relevance in string cosmology.
