An aperiodic monotile that forces nonperiodicity through dendrites

We introduce a new type of aperiodic hexagonal monotile; a prototile that admits infinitely many tilings of the plane, but any such tiling lacks any translational symmetry. Adding a copy of our monotile to a patch of tiles must satisfy two rules that apply only to adjacent tiles. The first is inspired by the Socolar--Taylor monotile, but can be realised by shape alone. The second is a local growth rule; a direct isometry of our monotile can be added to any patch of tiles provided that a tree on the monotile connects continuously with a tree on one of its neighbouring tiles. This condition forces tilings to grow along dendrites, which ultimately results in nonperiodic tilings. Our local growth rule initiates a new method to produce tilings of the plane.

Topological spaces associated to higher-rank graphs

We investigate which topological spaces can be constructed as topological realisations of higher-rank graphs. We describe equivalence relations on higher-rank graphs for which the quotient is again a higher-rank graph, and show that identifying isomorphic co-hereditary subgraphs in a disjoint union of two rank-$k$ graphs gives rise to pullbacks of the associated $C^*$-algebras. We describe a combinatorial version of the connected-sum operation and apply it to the rank-2-graph realisations of the four basic surfaces to deduce that every compact 2-manifold is the topological realisation of a rank-2 graph. We also show how to construct $k$-spheres and wedges of $k$-spheres as topological realisations of rank-$k$ graphs.

Dynamical correspondences for Smale spaces

We initiate the study of correspondences for Smale spaces. Correspondences are shown to provide a notion of a generalized morphism between Smale spaces and are a special case of finite equivalences. Furthermore, for shifts of finite type, a correspondence is related to a matrix which intertwines the adjacency matrices of the shifts. This observation allows us to define an equivalence relation on all Smale spaces which reduces to shift equivalence for shifts of finite type. Several other notions of equivalence are introduced on both correspondences and Smale spaces; a hierarchy between these equivalences is established. Finally, we provide several methods for constructing correspondences and provide specific examples.

Equilibrium states on the Cuntz-Pimsner algebras of self-similar actions

We consider a family of Cuntz-Pimsner algebras associated to self-similar group actions, and their Toeplitz analogues. Both families carry natural dynamics implemented by automorphic actions of the real line, and we investigate the equilibrium states (the KMS states) for these dynamical systems. We find that for all inverse temperatures above a critical value, the KMS states on the Toeplitz algebra are given, in a very concrete way, by traces on the full group algebra of the group. At the critical inverse temperature, the KMS states factor through states of the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra; if the self-similar group is contracting, then the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra has only one KMS state. We apply these results to a number of examples, including the self-similar group actions associated to integer dilation matrices, and the canonical self-similar actions of the basilica group and the Grigorchuk group.

Fractal dual substitution tilings

Starting with a substitution tiling, we demonstrate a method for constructing infinitely many new substitution tilings. Each of these new tilings is derived from a graph iterated function system and the tiles have fractal boundary. We show that each of the new tilings is mutually locally derivable to the original tiling. Thus, at the tiling space level, the new substitution rules are expressing geometric and combinatorial, rather than topological, features of the original. Our method is easy to apply to particular substitution tilings, permits experimentation, and can be used to construct border-forcing substitution rules. For a large class of examples we show that the combinatorial dual tiling has a realization as a substitution tiling. Since the boundaries of our new tilings are fractal we are led to compute their fractal dimension. As an application of our techniques we show how to compute the Čech cohomology of a (not necessarily border-forcing) tiling using a graph iterated function system of a fractal tiling.

Twisted C*-algebras associated to finitely aligned higher-rank graphs

We introduce twisted relative Cuntz-Krieger algebras associated to finitely aligned higher-rank graphs and give a comprehensive treatment of their fundamental structural properties. We establish versions of the usual uniqueness theorems and the classification of gauge-invariant ideals. We show that all twisted relative Cuntz-Krieger algebras associated to finitely aligned higher-rank graphs are nuclear and satisfy the UCT, and that for twists that lift to real-valued cocycles, the K-theory of a twisted relative Cuntz-Krieger algebra is independent of the twist. In the final section, we identify a sufficient condition for simplicity of twisted Cuntz-Krieger algebras associated to higher-rank graphs which are not aperiodic. Our results indicate that this question is significantly more complicated than in the untwisted setting.

Zappa-Szép products of semigroups and their C*-algebras

Zappa-Szép products of semigroups encompass both the self-similar group actions of Nekrashevych and the quasi-lattice-ordered groups of Nica. We use Li's construction of semigroup $C^*$-algebras to associate a $C^*$-algebra to Zappa-Szép products and give an explicit presentation of the algebra. We then define a quotient $C^*$-algebra that generalises the Cuntz-Pimsner algebras for self-similar actions. We indicate how known examples, previously viewed as distinct classes, fit into our unifying framework. We specifically discuss the Baumslag-Solitar groups, the binary adding machine, the semigroup $\mathbb{N}\rtimes\mathbb{N}^\times$, and the $ax+b$-semigroup $\mathbb{Z}\rtimes\mathbb{Z}^\times$.

A fractal version of the pinwheel tiling

We introduce a fractal version of the pinwheel substitution tiling. There are thirteen basic prototiles, all of which have fractal boundaries. These tiles, along with their reflections and rotations, create a tiling space which is mutually locally derivable from the pinwheel tiling space. Interesting rotational properties, symmetries, and relative tile frequency are discussed for the tiling space associated with the fractal pinwheel tiling.

C*-algebras of tilings with infinite rotational symmetry

A tiling with infinite rotational symmetry, such as the Conway-Radin Pinwheel Tiling, gives rise to a topological dynamical system to which an étale equivalence relation is associated. A groupoid C*-algebra for a tiling is produced and a separating dense set is exhibited in the C*-algebra which encodes the structure of the topological dynamical system. In the case of a substitution tiling, natural subsets of this separating dense set are used to define an AT-subalgebra of the C*-algebra. Finally our results are applied to the Pinwheel Tiling.
