SoulSeek: Exploring the Use of Social Cues in LLM-based Information Seeking

Social cues, which convey others' presence, behaviors, or identities, play a crucial role in human information seeking by helping individuals judge relevance and trustworthiness. However, existing LLM-based search systems primarily rely on semantic features, creating a misalignment with the socialized cognition underlying natural information seeking. To address this gap, we explore how the integration of social cues into LLM-based search influences users' perceptions, experiences, and behaviors. Focusing on social media platforms that are beginning to adopt LLM-based search, we integrate design workshops, the implementation of the prototype system (SoulSeek), a between-subjects study, and mixed-method analyses to examine both outcome- and process-level findings. The workshop informs the prototype's cue-integrated design. The study shows that social cues improve perceived outcomes and experiences, promote reflective information behaviors, and reveal limits of current LLM-based search. We propose design implications emphasizing better social-knowledge understanding, personalized cue settings, and controllable interactions.

Van der Corput and metric theorems for geometric progressions for self-similar measures

We prove a van der Corput lemma for non-atomic self-similar measures $μ$. As an application, we show that the correlations of all finite orders of $( x^n \mod 1 )_{n\geq 1}$ converge to the Poissonian model for $μ$-a.e. $x$, assuming $x>1$. We also complete a recent result of Algom, Rodriguez Hertz, and Wang (obtained simultaneously by Baker and Banaji), showing that any self-conformal measure with respect to a non-affine real analytic IFS has polynomial Fourier decay.

EV Charging Station Wholesale Market Participation: A Strategic Bidding and Pricing Approach

This paper presents a framework for simultaneous bidding and pricing strategy for wholesale market participation of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations aggregator. The proposed framework incorporates the EV charging stations' technical constraints as well as EV owners' preferences. A bi-level optimization is adopted to model the problem. In the upper level, the total profit of the EV charging station aggregator is maximized. In the lower-level problem, the EV owner's utility function is maximized. The EV owners' preferences are modeled using the quadratic utility function. The bi-level optimization problem which is non-convex and hard to solve is converted to a mixed-integer convex quadratic programming model by writing the optimal conditions of the lower-level problem that is solvable with commercial solvers. The effectiveness of the proposed framework is investigated by implementing simulation results.

ISO and DSO Coordination: A Parametric Programming Approach

In this paper, a framework is proposed to coordinate the operation of the independent system operator (ISO) and distribution system operator (DSO) to leverage the wholesale market participation of distributed energy resources (DERs) aggregators while ensuring secure operation of distribution grids. The proposed coordination framework is based on parametric programming. The DSO builds the bid-in cost function based on the distribution system market considering its market player constraints and distribution system physical constraints including the power balance equations and voltage limitation constraints. The DSO submits the resulting bid-in cost function to the wholesale market operated by the ISO. After the clearance of the wholesale market, the DSO determines the share of its retail market participants (i.e., DER aggregators). Case studies are performed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

On dimensions of visible parts of self-similar sets with finite rotation groups

We derive an upper bound for the Assouad dimension of visible parts of self-similar sets generated by iterated function systems with finite rotation groups and satisfying the open set condition. The bound is valid for all visible parts and it depends on the penetrable part of the set, which is a concept defined in this paper. As a corollary, we obtain in the planar case that if the projection is a finite or countable union of intervals then the visible part is 1-dimensional. We also prove that the Assouad dimension of a visible part is strictly smaller than the Hausdorff dimension of the set provided the projection contains interior points.

Optical and magneto-optical properties of ferromagnetic monolayer CrBr$_3$: A first-principles $GW$ and $GW$ plus Bethe-Salpeter equation study

The discovery of atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) magnetic semiconductors has triggered enormous research interest recently. In this work, we use first-principles many-body perturbation theory to study a prototypical 2D ferromagnetic semiconductor, monolayer chromium tribromide (CrBr$_3$). With broken time-reversal symmetry, spin-orbit coupling, and excitonic effects included through the full-spinor $GW$ and $GW$ plus Bethe-Salpeter equation ($GW$-BSE) methods, we compute the frequency-dependent layer polarizability tensor and dielectric function tensor that govern the optical and magneto-optical properties. In addition, we provide a detailed theoretical formalism for simulating magnetic circular dichroism, magneto-optical Kerr effect, and Faraday effect, demonstrating the approach with monolayer CrBr$_3$. Due to reduced dielectric screening in 2D and the localized nature of the Cr $d$ orbitals, we find strong self-energy effects on the quasiparticle band structure of monolayer CrBr$_3$ that give a 3.8 eV indirect band gap. Also, excitonic effects dominate the low-energy optical and magneto-optical responses in monolayer CrBr$_3$ where a large exciton binding energy of 2.3 eV is found for the lowest bright exciton state with excitation energy at 1.5 eV. We further find that the magneto-optical signals demonstrate strong dependence on the excitation frequency and substrate refractive index. Our theoretical framework for modeling optical and magneto-optical effects could serve as a powerful theoretical tool for future study of optoelectronic and spintronics devices consisting of van der Waals 2D magnets.

Optimal Utilization of Third-Party Demand Response Resources in Vertically Integrated Utilities: A Game Theoretic Approach

This paper studies the optimal mechanisms for the vertically integrated utility to dispatch and incentivize the third-party demand response (DR) providers in its territory. A framework is proposed, with three-layer coupled Stackelberg and simultaneous games, to study the interactions and competitions among the profit-seeking process of the utility, the third-party DR providers, and the individual end users (EUs) in the DR programs. Two coupled single-leader-multiple-followers Stackelberg games with a three-layer structure are proposed to capture the interactions among the utility (modeled in the upper layer), the third-party DR providers (modeled in the middle layer), and the EUs in each DR program (modeled in the lower layer). The competitions among the EUs in each DR program is captured through a non-cooperative simultaneous game. An inconvenience cost function is proposed to model the DR provision willingness and capacity of different EUs. The Stackelberg game between the middle-layer DR provider and the lower-layer EUs is solved by converting the original bi-level programming to a singlelevel programming. This converted single-level programming is embedded in an iterative algorithm toward solving the entire coupled games framework. Case studies are performed on IEEE 34-bus and IEEE 69-bus test systems to illustrate the application of the proposed framework.

Optimal Participation of Price-maker Battery Energy Storage Systems in Energy and Ancillary Services Markets Considering Degradation Cost

This paper proposes a bi-level optimization framework to investigate the optimal market operation strategies of price-maker battery energy storage systems (BESSs) in real-time energy, spinning reserve, and pay as performance regulation markets, with a special focus on understanding BESS's excessive regulation market participation observed by several system operators and the impact of battery degradation cost on BESS market activities. An accurate battery degradation cost function is integrated into the BESS's strategic bidding model. An automatic generation control (AGC) signal dispatch model is proposed to deploy AGC signals in the bi-level framework. This enables thorough studies for BESS's operating characteristics in the frequency regulation market, when both battery degradation and detailed AGC signal following activities are considered. Case studies on a synthetic system with real-world data are performed to study interactions between BESS profit maximization and wholesale market operations, considering system annual load and ancillary service requirements variations. The impacts of BESS capacity and replacement cost on its revenue from energy and ancillary services markets are also investigated.

A DSO Framework for Comprehensive Market Participation of DER Aggregators

In this paper, a distribution system operator (DSO) framework is proposed to optimally coordinate distributed energy resources (DER) aggregators' comprehensive participation in retail energy market as well as wholesale energy and regulation markets. Various types of DER aggregators, including energy storage aggregators (ESAGs), dispatchable distributed generation aggregators (DDGAGs), electric vehicles charging stations (EVCSs), and demand response aggregators (DRAGs), are modeled in the proposed DSO framework. Distribution network constraints are considered by using a linearized power flow. The problem is modeled using mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) which can be solved by commercial solvers. Case studies are performed to analyze the interactions between DER aggregators and wholesale/retail electricity markets.

A Two-stage Stochastic Programming DSO Framework for Comprehensive Market Participation of DER Aggregators under Uncertainty

In this paper, a distribution system operator (DSO) framework is proposed for comprehensive retail and wholesale markets participation of distributed energy resource (DER) aggregators under uncertainty based on two-stage stochastic programming. Different kinds of DER aggregators including energy storage aggregators (ESAGs), demand response aggregators (DRAGs), electric vehicle (EV) aggregating charging stations (EVCSs), dispatchable distributed generation (DDG) aggregators (DDGAGs), and renewable energy aggregators (REAGs) are modeled. Distribution network operation constraints are considered using a linearized power flow. The problem is modeled using mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) which can be solved by using commercial solvers. Case studies are conducted to investigate the performance of the proposed DSO framework.

Covering the Sierpiński carpet with tubes

We show that non-trivial $\times N$-invariant sets in $[0,1]^d$, such as the Sierpiński carpet and the Sierpiński sponge, are tube-null, that is, they can be covered by a union of tubular neighbourhoods of lines of arbitrarily small total volume. This introduces a new class of tube-null sets of dimension strictly between $d-1$ and $d$. We utilize ergodic-theoretic methods to decompose the set into finitely many parts, each of which projects onto a set of Hausdorff dimension less than $1$ in some direction. We also discuss coverings by tubes for other self-similar sets, and present various applications.

Optimal Participation of Price-Maker Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESSs) in Energy, Reserve and Pay as Performance Regulation Markets

Motivated by the need of assessing the optimal allocation of battery energy storage services across various markets and the corresponding impact on market operations, an optimization framework is proposed in this work to coordinate the operation of an independent utility-scale price-maker battery energy storage system (BESS) in the energy, spinning reserve and performance-based regulation markets. The entire problem is formulated as a bi-level optimization process, where the structure of all markets is modeled considering the joint operation limits. The strategic bidding behavior of a price-maker BESS in a pay as performance regulation market is investigated. Additionally, a specific approach is introduced for modeling automatic generation control (AGC) signals in the optimization. Although the formulated problem is non-linear, it is converted to mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) to find the optimum solution. The proposed framework is evaluated using test case scenarios created from real-world market data. Case study results show the impact of BESS's price-making behavior on the joint operation of energy, reserve, and regulation markets.

Predicting Real-Time Locational Marginal Prices: A GAN-Based Video Prediction Approach

In this paper, we propose an unsupervised data-driven approach to predict real-time locational marginal prices (RTLMPs). The proposed approach is built upon a general data structure for organizing system-wide heterogeneous market data streams into the format of market data images and videos. Leveraging this general data structure, the system-wide RTLMP prediction problem is formulated as a video prediction problem. A video prediction model based on generative adversarial networks (GAN) is proposed to learn the spatio-temporal correlations among historical RTLMPs and predict system-wide RTLMPs for the next hour. An autoregressive moving average (ARMA) calibration method is adopted to improve the prediction accuracy. The proposed RTLMP prediction method takes public market data as inputs, without requiring any confidential information on system topology, model parameters, or market operating details. Case studies using public market data from ISO New England (ISO-NE) and Southwest Power Pool (SPP) demonstrate that the proposed method is able to learn spatio-temporal correlations among RTLMPs and perform accurate RTLMP prediction.

SpecuSym: Speculative Symbolic Execution for Cache Timing Leak Detection

CPU cache is a limited but crucial storage component in modern processors, whereas the cache timing side-channel may inadvertently leak information through the physically measurable timing variance. Speculative execution, an essential processor optimization, and a source of such variances, can cause severe detriment on deliberate branch mispredictions. Despite static analysis could qualitatively verify the timing-leakage-free property under speculative execution, it is incapable of producing endorsements including inputs and speculated flows to diagnose leaks in depth. This work proposes a new symbolic execution based method, SpecuSym, for precisely detecting cache timing leaks introduced by speculative execution. Given a program (leakage-free in non-speculative execution), SpecuSymsystematically explores the program state space, models speculative behavior at conditional branches, and accumulates the cache side effects along with subsequent path explorations. During the dynamic execution, SpecuSymconstructs leak predicates for memory visits according to the specified cache model and conducts a constraint-solving based cache behavior analysis to inspect the new cache behaviors. We have implementedSpecuSymatop KLEE and evaluated it against 15 open-source benchmarks. Experimental results show thatSpecuSymsuccessfully detected from 2 to 61 leaks in 6 programs under 3 different cache settings and identified false positives in 2 programs reported by recent work.

Visualizing Exotic Orbital Texture in the Single-Layer Mott Insulator 1T-TaSe2

Mott insulating behavior is induced by strong electron correlation and can lead to exotic states of matter such as unconventional superconductivity and quantum spin liquids. Recent advances in van der Waals material synthesis enable the exploration of novel Mott systems in the two-dimensional limit. Here we report characterization of the local electronic properties of single- and few-layer 1T-TaSe2 via spatial- and momentum-resolved spectroscopy involving scanning tunneling microscopy and angle-resolved photoemission. Our combined experimental and theoretical study indicates that electron correlation induces a robust Mott insulator state in single-layer 1T-TaSe2 that is accompanied by novel orbital texture. Inclusion of interlayer coupling weakens the insulating phase in 1T-TaSe2, as seen by strong reduction of its energy gap and quenching of its correlation-driven orbital texture in bilayer and trilayer 1T-TaSe2. Our results establish single-layer 1T-TaSe2 as a useful new platform for investigating strong correlation physics in two dimensions.

Two-dimensional InSe/WS$_2$ heterostructure with enhanced optoelectronic performance in the visible region

Two-dimensional (2D) InSe and WS$_2$ exhibit promising characteristics for optoelectronic and photoelectrochemical applications, e.g. photodetection and photocatalytic water splitting. However, both of them have poor absorption of visible light due to wide band gaps. 2D InSe has high electron mobility but low hole mobility, while 2D WS$_2$ is on the opposite. Here, we design a 2D heterostructure composed of their monolayers and study its optoelectronic properties by first-principles calculations. Our results show that the heterostructure has a direct band gap of 2.19 eV, which is much smaller than those of the monolayers mainly due to a type-II band alignment: the valence band maximum and the conduction band minimum of monolayer InSe are lower than those of monolayer WS$_2$, respectively. The visible-light absorption is enhanced considerably, e.g. about fivefold (threefold) increase at the wavelength of 490 nm in comparison to monolayer InSe (WS$_2$). The type-II band alignment also facilitates the spatial separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, i.e., electrons (holes) reside preferably in the InSe (WS$_2$) layer. The two layers complement each other in carrier mobilities of the heterostructure: the photogenerated electrons and holes inherit the large mobilities from the InSe and WS$_2$ monolayers, respectively.

Path-based Iterative Reconstruction (PBIR) for X-ray Computed Tomography

Model-based iterative reconstruction (MBIR) techniques have demonstrated many advantages in X-ray CT image reconstruction. The MBIR approach is often modeled as a convex optimization problem including a data fitting function and a penalty function. The tuning parameter value that regulates the strength of the penalty function is critical for achieving good reconstruction results but difficult to choose. In this work, we describe two path seeking algorithms that are capable of efficiently generating a series of MBIR images with different strengths of the penalty function. The root-mean-squared-differences of the proposed path seeking algorithms are below 4 HU throughout the entire reconstruction path. With the efficient path seeking algorithm, we suggest a path-based iterative reconstruction (PBIR) to obtain complete information from the scanned data and reconstruction model.

Random affine code tree fractals: Hausdorff and affinity dimensions and pressure

We prove that for random affine code tree fractals the affinity dimension is almost surely equal to the unique zero of the pressure function. As a consequence, we show that the Hausdorff, packing and box counting dimensions of such systems are equal to the zero of the pressure. In particular, we do not presume the validity of the Falconer-Sloan condition or any other additional assumptions which have been essential in all the previously known results.

The Research and Optimization of Parallel Finite Element Algorithm based on MiniFE

Finite element method (FEM) is one of the most important numerical methods in modern engineering design and analysis. Since traditional serial FEM is difficult to solve large FE problems efficiently and accurately, high-performance parallel FEM has become one of the essential way to solve practical engineering problems. Based on MiniFE program, which is released by National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center(NERSC), this work analyzes concrete steps, key computing pattern and parallel mechanism of parallel FEM. According to experimental results, this work analyzes the proportion of calculation amount of each module and concludes the main performance bottleneck of the program. Based on that, we optimize the MiniFE program on a server platform. The optimization focuses on the bottleneck of the program - SpMV kernel, and uses an efficient storage format named BCRS. Moreover, an improving plan of hybrid MPI+OpenMP programming is provided. Experimental results show that the optimized program performs better in both SpMV kernel and synchronization. It can increase the performance of the program, on average, by 8.31%. Keywords : finite element, parallel, MiniFE, SpMV, performance optimization

$(111)$ surface states of SnTe

The characterization and applications of topological insulators depend critically on their protected surface states, which, however, can be obscured by the presence of trivial dangling bond states. Our first principle calculations show that this is the case for the pristine $(111)$ surface of SnTe. Yet, the predicted surface states unfold when the dangling bond states are passivated in proper chemisorption. We further extract the anisotropic Fermi velocities, penetration lengths and anisotropic spin textures of the unfolded $\barΓ$- and $\bar M$-surface states, which are consistent with the theory in http://dx.doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.86.081303 Phys. Rev. B 86, 081303 (R). More importantly, this chemisorption scheme provides an external control of the relative energies of different Dirac nodes, which is particularly desirable in multi-valley transport.

Multifractal analysis of some multiple ergodic averages

In this paper we study the multiple ergodic averages $$ \frac{1}{n}\sum_{k=1}^n φ(x_k, x_{kq}, ..., x_{k q^{\ell-1}}), \qquad (x_n) \in Σ_m $$ on the symbolic space $Σ_m ={0, 1, ..., m-1}^{\mathbb{N}^*}$ where $m\ge 2, \ell\ge 2, q\ge 2$ are integers. We give a complete solution to the problem of multifractal analysis of the limit of the above multiple ergodic averages. Actually we develop a non-invariant and non-linear version of thermodynamic formalism that is of its own interest. We study a large class of measures (called telescopic measures) and the special case of telescopic measures defined by the fixed points of some non-linear transfer operators plays a crucial role in studying our multiplicatively invariant sets. These measures share many properties with Gibbs measures in the classical thermodynamic formalism. Our work also concerns with variational principle, pressure function and Legendre transform in this new setting.

The Multifractal Spectra of V-Statistics

Let $(X, T)$ be a topological dynamical system and let $Φ: X^r \to \mathbb{R}$ be a continuous function on the product space $X^r= X\times ... \times X$ ($r\ge 1$). We are interested in the limit of V-statistics taking $Φ$ as kernel: [\lim_{n\to \infty} n^{-r}\sum_{1\le i_1, ..., i_r\le n} Φ(T^{i_1}x, ..., T^{i_r} x).] The multifractal spectrum of topological entropy of the above limit is expressed by a variational principle when the system satisfies the specification property. Unlike the classical case ($r=1$) where the spectrum is an analytic function when $Φ$ is Hölder continuous, the spectrum of the limit of higher order V-statistics ($r\ge 2$) may be discontinuous even for very nice kernel $Φ$.

The Dimension of Spline Spaces with Highest Order Smoothness over Hierarchical T-meshes

This paper discusses the dimension of spline spaces with highest order smoothness over hierarchical T-meshes over certain type of hierarchical T-meshes. The major step is to set up a bijection between the spline space with highest order smoothness over a hierarchical T-mesh and a univariate spline space whose definition depends on the l-edges of the extended T-mesh. We decompose the univariate spline space into direct sums in the sense of isomorphism using the theory of the short exact sequence in homological algebra. According to the decomposition of the univariate spline space, the dimension formula of the spline space with highest order smoothness over certain type of hierarchical T-mesh is presented. A set of basis functions of the spline space is also constructed.
