SLEI3D: Simultaneous Exploration and Inspection via Heterogeneous Fleets under Limited Communication

Robotic fleets such as unmanned aerial and ground vehicles have been widely used for routine inspections of static environments, where the areas of interest are known and planned in advance. However, in many applications, such areas of interest are unknown and should be identified online during exploration. Thus, this paper considers the problem of simultaneous exploration, inspection of unknown environments and then real-time communication to a mobile ground control station to report the findings. The heterogeneous robots are equipped with different sensors, e.g., long-range lidars for fast exploration and close-range cameras for detailed inspection. Furthermore, global communication is often unavailable in such environments, where the robots can only communicate with each other via ad-hoc wireless networks when they are in close proximity and free of obstruction. This work proposes a novel planning and coordination framework (SLEI3D) that integrates the online strategies for collaborative 3D exploration, adaptive inspection and timely communication (via the intermit-tent or proactive protocols). To account for uncertainties w.r.t. the number and location of features, a multi-layer and multi-rate planning mechanism is developed for inter-and-intra robot subgroups, to actively meet and coordinate their local plans. The proposed framework is validated extensively via high-fidelity simulations of numerous large-scale missions with up to 48 robots and 384 thousand cubic meters. Hardware experiments of 7 robots are also conducted. Project website is available at https://junfengchen-robotics.github.io/SLEI3D/.

Interactive Human-in-the-loop Coordination of Manipulation Skills Learned from Demonstration

Learning from demonstration (LfD) provides a fast, intuitive and efficient framework to program robot skills, which has gained growing interest both in research and industrial applications. Most complex manipulation tasks are long-term and involve a set of skill primitives. Thus it is crucial to have a reliable coordination scheme that selects the correct sequence of skill primitive and the correct parameters for each skill, under various scenarios. Instead of relying on a precise simulator, this work proposes a human-in-the-loop coordination framework for LfD skills that: builds parameterized skill models from kinesthetic demonstrations; constructs a geometric task network (GTN) on-the-fly from human instructions; learns a hierarchical control policy incrementally during execution. This framework can reduce significantly the manual design efforts, while improving the adaptability to new scenes. We show on a 7-DoF robotic manipulator that the proposed approach can teach complex industrial tasks such as bin sorting and assembly in less than 30 minutes.

Radio detection of an elusive millisecond pulsar in the Globular Cluster NGC 6397

We report the discovery of a new 5.78 ms-period millisecond pulsar (MSP), PSR J1740-5340B (NGC 6397B), in an eclipsing binary system discovered with the Parkes radio telescope (now also known as Murriyang), Australia, and confirmed with the MeerKAT radio telescope in South Africa. The measured orbital period, 1.97 days, is the longest among all eclipsing binaries in globular clusters (GCs) and consistent with that of the coincident X-ray source U18, previously suggested to be a 'hidden MSP'. Our XMM-Newton observations during NGC 6397B's radio quiescent epochs detected no X-ray flares. NGC 6397B is either a transitional MSP or an eclipsing binary in its initial stage of mass transfer after the companion star left the main sequence. The discovery of NGC 6397B potentially reveals a subgroup of extremely faint and heavily obscured binary pulsars, thus providing a plausible explanation to the apparent dearth of binary neutron stars in core-collapsed GCs as well as a critical constraint on the evolution of GCs.

Learning and Sequencing of Object-Centric Manipulation Skills for Industrial Tasks

Enabling robots to quickly learn manipulation skills is an important, yet challenging problem. Such manipulation skills should be flexible, e.g., be able adapt to the current workspace configuration. Furthermore, to accomplish complex manipulation tasks, robots should be able to sequence several skills and adapt them to changing situations. In this work, we propose a rapid robot skill-sequencing algorithm, where the skills are encoded by object-centric hidden semi-Markov models. The learned skill models can encode multimodal (temporal and spatial) trajectory distributions. This approach significantly reduces manual modeling efforts, while ensuring a high degree of flexibility and re-usability of learned skills. Given a task goal and a set of generic skills, our framework computes smooth transitions between skill instances. To compute the corresponding optimal end-effector trajectory in task space we rely on Riemannian optimal controller. We demonstrate this approach on a 7 DoF robot arm for industrial assembly tasks.

Fermionic Finite-Group Gauge Theories and Interacting Symmetric/Crystalline Orders via Cobordisms

We formulate a family of spin Topological Quantum Filed Theories (spin-TQFTs) as fermionic generalization of bosonic Dijkgraaf-Witten TQFTs. They are obtained by gauging $G$-equivariant invertible spin-TQFTs, or, in physics language, gauging the interacting fermionic Symmetry Protected Topological states (SPTs) with a finite group $G$ symmetry. We use the fact that the latter are classified by Pontryagin duals to spin-bordism groups of the classifying space $BG$. We also consider unoriented analogues, that is $G$-equivariant invertible pin$^\pm$-TQFTs (fermionic time-reversal-SPTs) and their gauging. We compute these groups for various examples of abelian $G$ using Adams spectral sequence and describe all corresponding TQFTs via certain bordism invariants in dimensions 3, 4, and other. This gives explicit formulas for the partition functions of spin-TQFTs on closed manifolds with possible extended operators inserted. The results also provide explicit classification of 't Hooft anomalies of fermionic QFTs with finite abelian group symmetries in one dimension lower. We construct new anomalous boundary deconfined spin-TQFTs (surface fermionic topological orders). We explore SPT and SET (symmetry enriched topologically ordered) states, and crystalline SPTs protected by space-group (e.g. translation $\mathbb{Z}$) or point-group (e.g. reflection, inversion or rotation $C_m$) symmetries, via the layer-stacking construction.

A Gapless MoS$_2$ Allotrope Possessing Both Massless Dirac and Heavy Fermions

MoS$_2$, a member of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), recently emerged as one of the fastest growing two-dimensional materials due to its fascinating mechanical, thermal, electronic and optical properties. Unlike graphene which possesses massless Dirac fermions with ultra-high electron mobility, monolayer MoS$_2$ is a direct band gap semiconductor. An interesting question arises: Can monolayer MoS$_2$ also possess massless Dirac fermions with ultra-high electron mobility? Here, using first-principles calculations, we show that a monolayer MoS$_2$ allotrope, which consists of repeated square-octagon rings (abbreviated as so-MoS$_2$ to distinguish from the normal hexagonal lattice, h-MoS$_2$) possesses both massless Dirac fermions and heavy fermions. Distinct from the $p$-orbital Dirac fermions of graphene, the Dirac fermions of so-MoS$_2$ are $d$-electrons and possess Fermi velocity comparable to that of graphene. The Dirac cone structure in so-MoS$_2$ demonstrated here greatly enriches our understanding on the physical properties of TMDs and opens up new possibilities for developing novel electronic/spintronic devices.

Communication-Free Multi-Agent Control under Local Temporal Tasks and Relative-Distance Constraints

We propose a distributed control and coordination strategy for multi-agent systems where each agent has a local task specified as a Linear Temporal Logic (LTL) formula and at the same time is subject to relative-distance constraints with its neighboring agents. The local tasks capture the temporal requirements on individual agents' behaviors, while the relative-distance constraints impose requirements on the collective motion of the whole team. The proposed solution relies only on relative-state measurements among the neighboring agents without the need for explicit information exchange. It is guaranteed that the local tasks given as syntactically co-safe or general LTL formulas are fulfilled and the relative-distance constraints are satisfied at all time. The approach is demonstrated with computer simulations.

Cooperative Decentralized Multi-agent Control under Local LTL Tasks and Connectivity Constraints

We propose a framework for the decentralized control of a team of agents that are assigned local tasks expressed as Linear Temporal Logic (LTL) formulas. Each local LTL task specification captures both the requirements on the respective agent's behavior and the requests for the other agents' collaborations needed to accomplish the task. Furthermore, the agents are subject to communication constraints. The presented solution follows the automata-theoretic approach to LTL model checking, however, it avoids the computationally demanding construction of synchronized product system between the agents. We suggest a decentralized coordination among the agents through a dynamic leader-follower scheme, to guarantee the low-level connectivity maintenance at all times and a progress towards the satisfaction of the leader's task. By a systematic leader switching, we ensure that each agent's task will be accomplished.
