Inflation and dark matter after spontaneous Planck scale generation by hidden chiral symmetry breaking

Dynamical chiral symmetry breaking in a QCD-like hidden sector is used to generate the Planck mass and the electroweak scale including the heavy right-handed neutrino mass. A real scalar field transmits the energy scale of the hidden sector to the visible sectors, playing besides a role of inflaton in the early Universe while realizing a Higgs-inflation-like model. Our dark matter candidates are hidden pions that raise due to dynamical chiral symmetry breaking. They are produced from the decay of inflaton. Unfortunately, it will be impossible to directly detect them, because they are super heavy ($10^{9\,\sim\,12}$ GeV), and moreover the interaction with the visible sector is extremely suppressed.

Possibility of multi-step electroweak phase transition in the two Higgs doublet models

We discuss whether a multi-step electroweak phase transition (EWPT) occurs in two Higgs doublet models (2HDMs). The EWPT is related to interesting phenomena such as baryogenesis and a gravitational wave from it. We examine parameter regions in CP-conserving 2HDMs and find certain areas where the multi-step EWPTs occur. The parameter search shows the multi-step EWPT prefers the scalar potential with the approximate $Z_2$ symmetry and a mass hierarchy between the neutral CP-odd and CP-even extra scalar bosons $m_A<m_H$. By contrast, the multi-step EWPT whose first step is strongly first order favors a mass hierarchy $m_A>m_H$. In addition, we compute the Higgs trilinear coupling in the parameter region where the multi-step EWPTs occur, which can be observed at future colliders. We also discuss a multi-peaked gravitational wave from a multi-step EWPT.

A hybrid seesaw model and hierarchical neutrino flavor structures based on $A_{4}$ symmetry

We propose a hybrid seesaw model based on $A_{4}$ flavor symmetry, which generates a large hierarchical flavor structure. In our model, tree-level and one-loop seesaw mechanisms predict different flavor structures in the neutrino mass matrix, and generate a notable hierarchy among them. We find that such a hierarchical structure gives a large effective neutrino mass which can be accessible by next-generation neutrinoless double beta decay experiments. Majorana phases can also be predictable. The $A_{4}$ flavor symmetry in the model is spontaneously broken to the $Z_{2}$ symmetry, leading to a dark matter candidate which is assumed to be a neutral scalar field. The favored mass region of the dark matter is obtained by numerical computations of the relic abundance and the cross section of the nucleon. We also investigate the predictions of the several hierarchical flavor structures based on $A_{4}$ symmetry for the effective neutrino mass and the Majorana phases, and find the characteristic features depending on the hierarchical structures.

Gravitational waves from chiral phase transition in a conformally extended standard model

The gravitational wave (GW) background produced at the cosmological chiral phase transition in a conformal extension of the standard model is studied. To obtain the bounce solution of coupled field equations we implement an iterative method. We find that the corresponding $O(3)$ symmetric Euclidean action $S_3$ divided by the temperature $T$ has a simple behavior near the critical temperature $T_C$: $S_3/T \propto (1-T/T_C)^{-γ}$, which is subsequently used to determine the transition's inverse duration $β$ normalized to the Hubble parameter $H$. It turns out that $β/H \gtrsim 10^3$, implying that the sound wave period $τ_\text{sw}$ as an active GW source, too, can be much shorter than the Hubble time. We therefore compute $τ_\text{sw} H$ and use it as the reduction factor for the sound wave contribution. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for Deci-Hertz Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (DECIGO) and Big Bang Observer (BBO) is evaluated, with the result: SNR$^\text{DECIGO} \lesssim 1.2$ and SNR$^\text{BBO} \lesssim 12.0$ for five years observation, from which we conclude that the GW signal predicted by the model in the optimistic case could be detected at BBO.

Heavy Dark Matter, Neutrino Masses and Higgs Naturalness from a Strongly Interacting Hidden Sector

We consider the extension of the Standard Model (SM) with a strongly interacting QCD-like hidden sector, at least two generations of right-handed neutrinos and one scalar singlet. Once scalar singlet obtains a nonzero vacuum expectation value, active neutrino masses are generated through type-I seesaw mechanism. Simultaneously, the electroweak scale is generated through the radiative corrections involving these massive fermions. This is the essence of the scenario that is known as the "neutrino option" for which the successful masses of right-handed neutrinos are in the range $10^7-10^8$ GeV. The main goal of this work is to scrutinize the potential to accommodate dark matter in such a realization. The dark matter candidates are Nambu-Goldstone bosons which appear due to the dynamical breaking of the hidden chiral symmetry. The mass spectrum studied in this work is such that masses of Nambu-Goldstone bosons and singlet scalar exceed those of right-handed neutrinos. Having the masses of all relevant particles several orders of magnitude above $\mathcal{O}$(TeV), the freeze-out of dark matter is not achievable and hence we turn to alternative scenarios, namely freeze-in. The Nambu-Goldstone bosons can interact with particles that are not in SM but, however, have non-negligible abundance through their not-too-small couplings with SM. Utilizing this, we demonstrate that the dark matter in the model is successfully produced at temperature scale where the right-handed neutrinos are still stable. We note that the lepton number asymmetry sufficient for the generation of observable baryon asymmetry of the Universe can be produced in right-handed neutrino decays. Hence, we infer that the model has the potential to simultaneously address several of the most relevant puzzles in contemporary high-energy physics.

Probing charged lepton number violation via $\ell^\pm \ell^{\prime \pm} W^\mp W^\mp$

We study impacts of dimension-five lepton-number violating operators associated with two same-sign weak bosons, $\ell^\pm \ell^{\prime \pm} W^\mp W^\mp$, on current and future experiments for neutrino oscillation, lepton-number violating rare processes and high-energy collider experiments. These operators can contain important information on the origin of tiny neutrino masses, which is independent of that from the so-called Weinberg operator. We examine constraints on the coefficients of the operators by the neutrino oscillation data. Upper bounds on the coefficients are also investigated by using the data for processes of lepton number violation such as neutrinoless double beta decays and $μ^-$-$e^+$ conversion. These operators can also be directly tested by searching for lepton-number violating dilepton production via the same-sign W boson fusion process at high-energy hadron colliders like the Large Hadron Collider. We find that these operators can be considerably probed by these current and future experiments.

Testing neutrino mass generation mechanisms from the lepton flavor violating decay of the Higgs boson

We investigate how observations of the lepton flavor violating decay of the Higgs boson ($h \to \ell\ell^\prime$) can narrow down models of neutrino mass generation mechanisms, which were systematically studied in Refs. [1,2] by focusing on the combination of new Yukawa coupling matrices with leptons. We find that a wide class of models for neutrino masses can be excluded if evidence for $h \to \ell\ell^\prime$ is really obtained in the current or future collider experiments. In particular, simple models of Majorana neutrino masses cannot be compatible with the observation of $h \to \ell\ell^\prime$. It is also found that some of the simple models to generate masses of Dirac neutrinos radiatively can be compatible with a significant rate of the $h \to \ell\ell^\prime$ process.

A model realizing inverse seesaw and resonant leptogenesis

We construct a model realizing the inverse seesaw mechanism. The model has two types of gauge singlet fermions in addition to right-handed neutrinos. A required Majorana mass scale (keV scale) for generating the light active neutrino mass in the conventional inverse seesaw can be naturally explained by a "seesaw" mechanism between the two singlet fermions in our model. We find that our model can decrease the magnitude of hierarchy among the mass parameters by $\mathcal{O}(10^4)$ from that in the conventional inverse seesaw model. We also show that a successful resonant leptogenesis occurs for generating the baryon asymmetry of the universe in our model. The desired mass degeneracy for the resonant leptogenesis can also be achieved by the "seesaw" between the two singlet fermions.

Nambu-Goldstone Dark Matter in a Scale Invariant Bright Hidden Sector

We consider a scale invariant extension of the standard model (SM) with a combined breaking of conformal and electroweak symmetry in a strongly interacting hidden $SU(n_c)$ gauge sector with $n_f$ vector-like hidden fermions. The (pseudo) Nambu-Goldstone bosons that arise due to dynamical chiral symmetry breaking are dark matter (DM) candidates. We focus on $n_f=n_c=3$, where $SU(3)$ is the largest symmetry group of hidden flavor which can be explicitly broken into either $U(1) \times U(1)$ or $SU(2)\times U(1)$. We study DM properties and discuss consistent parameter space for each case. Because of different mechanisms of DM annihilation the consistent parameter space in the case of $SU(2)\times U(1)$ is significantly different from that of $SU(3)$ if the hidden fermions have a SM $U(1)_Y$ charge of $O(1)$.

Non-thermal Production of Minimal Dark Matter via Right-handed Neutrino Decay

Minimal Dark Matter (MDM) stands as one of the simplest dark matter scenarios. In MDM models, annihilation and co-annihilation processes among the members of the MDM multiplet are usually very efficient, pushing the dark matter mass above $\mathcal{O}(10)$ TeV in order to reproduce the observed dark matter relic density. Motivated by this little drawback, in this paper we consider an extension of the MDM scenario by three right-handed neutrinos. Two specific choices for the MDM multiplet are studied: a fermionic $SU(2)_L$ quintuplet and a scalar $SU(2)_L$ septuplet. The lightest right-handed neutrino, with tiny Yukawa couplings, never reaches thermal equilibrium in the early universe and is produced by freeze-in. This creates a link between dark matter and neutrino physics: dark matter can be non-thermally produced by the decay of the lightest right-handed neutrino after freeze-out, allowing to lower significantly the dark matter mass. We discuss the phenomenology of the non-thermally produced MDM and, taking into account significant Sommerfeld corrections, we find that the dark matter mass must have some specific values in order not to be in conflict with the current bounds from gamma-ray observations.

Impact of Semi-annihilation of Z3 Symmetric Dark Matter with Radiative Neutrino Masses

We investigate a Z3 symmetric model with two-loop radiative neutrino masses. Dark matter in the model is either a Dirac fermion or a complex scalar as a result of an unbroken Z3 symmetry. In addition to standard annihilation processes, semi-annihilation of the dark matter contributes to the relic density. We study the effect of the semi-annihilation in the model and and that those contributions are important to obtain the observed relic density. The experimental signatures in dark matter searches are also discussed, where some of them are expected to be different from the signatures of dark matter in Z2 symmetric models.

Multicomponent Dark Matter in Radiative Seesaw Model and Monochromatic Neutrino Flux

We consider a two loop radiative seesaw model with an exact $Z_2 \times Z'_2$ symmetry, which can stabilize two or three dark matter particles. The model is a simple extension of the inert scalar model of Ma, where the lepton-number violating mass term of the inert scalar, which is required to be small for small neutrino masses, is generated at the one-loop level. The semi-annihilation processes of different dark matter particles, which are present when there exist more than three different dark matter particles, not only play an important role for their relic densities, but also are responsible for the monochromatic neutrino lines resulting from the dark matter annihilation processes. The monochromatic neutrinos do not suffer from a chiral suppression, and we investigate the observational possibility of the monochromatic neutrino flux from the Sun.

Reconstruction of Inert Doublet Scalars at the International Linear Collider

We study collider signatures for extra scalar bosons in the inert doublet model at the international linear collider (ILC). The inert doublet model is a simple extension of the standard model by introducing an additional isospin-doublet scalar field which is odd under an unbroken Z_2 symmetry. The model predicts four kinds of Z_2-odd scalar bosons, and the lightest of them becomes stable and a candidate of the dark matter as long as it is electrically neutral. Taking into account the constraints from various theoretical and phenomenological conditions, we perform a simulation study for the distinctive signatures of the extra scalars over the standard-model background contributions at the ILC with the center-of-mass energy of sqrt{s} = 250 GeV and 500 GeV. We further discuss observables for determination of the mass of the scalars. We find that the parameter regions which cannot be detected at the large hadron collider can be probed at the ILC.

Two-loop radiative seesaw with multicomponent dark matter explaining the possible gamma excess in the Higgs boson decay and at the Fermi LAT

A non-supersymmetric model of a two-loop radiative seesaw is proposed. The model contains, in addition to the standard model (SM) Higgs boson, an inert SU(2)_L doublet scalar eta and two inert singlet scalars phi and chi. The lepton number is softly broken by a dimension-two operator, and the tree-level Dirac mass is forbidden by Z_2 x Z_2' (or D_{2N}), which predicts the existence of two or three dark matter particles. The scalar sector is minimal; none of the scalar fields can be suppressed for the radiative seesaw mechanism to work. There are by-products: The SM Higgs boson decay into two gamma's is slightly enhanced by eta^+ (the charged component of eta) circulating in one-loop diagrams for h to gamma gamma. The 135 GeV gamma-ray line observed at the Fermi LAT can be also explained by the annihilation of chi dark matter. We employ a mechanism of temperature-dependent annihilation cross section to suppress the continuum gamma rays and the production of antiprotons. The explanation can survive even down to the XENON1T sensitivity limit.

Multi-Component Dark Matter Systems and Their Observation Prospects

Conversions and semi-annihilations of dark matter (DM) particles in addition to the standard DM annihilations are considered in a three-component DM system. We find that the relic abundance of DM can be very sensitive to these non-standard DM annihilation processes, which has been recently found for two-component DM systems. To consider a concrete model of a three-component DM system, we extend the radiative seesaw model of Ma by adding a Majorana fermion χand a real scalar boson ϕ, to obtain a Z_2 \times Z'_2 DM stabilizing symmetry, where we assume that the DM particles are the inert Higgs boson, χand ϕ. It is shown how the allowed parameter space, obtained previously in the absence of χand ϕ, changes. The semi-annihilation process in this model produces monochromatic neutrinos. The observation rate of these monochromatic neutrinos from the Sun at IceCube is estimated. Observations of high energy monochromatic neutrinos from the Sun may indicate a multi-component DM system.

Radiative corrections to the Higgs boson couplings in the triplet model

We calculate a full set of one-loop corrections to the Higgs boson coupling constants as well as the electroweak parameters. We compute the decay rate of the standard model (SM)-like Higgs boson ($h$) into diphoton. Renormalized Higgs couplings with the weak gauge bosons $hVV$ ($V=W$ and $Z$) and the trilinear coupling $hhh$ are also calculated at the one-loop level in the on-shell scheme. Magnitudes of the deviations in these quantities are evaluated in the parameter regions where the unitarity and vacuum stability bounds are satisfied and the predicted W boson mass at the one-loop level is consistent with the data. We find that there are strong correlations among deviations in the Higgs boson couplings $hγγ$, $hVV$ and $hhh$. For example, if the event number of the $pp\to h\toγγ$ channel deviates by +30% (-40%) from the SM prediction, deviations in the one-loop corrected $hVV$ and $hhh$ vertices are predicted about -0.1% (-2%) and -10% $(+150%)$, respectively. The model can be discriminated from the other models by measuring these coupling constants accurately at future collider experiments.

Renormalization of the Higgs sector in the triplet model

We study radiative corrections to the mass spectrum and the triple Higgs boson coupling in the model with an additional Y=1 triplet field. In this model, the vacuum expectation value for the triplet field is strongly constrained from the electroweak precision data, under which characteristic mass spectrum appear at the tree level; i.e., $m_{H^{++}}^2-m_{H^+}^2\simeq m_{H^+}^2-m_A^2$ and $m_A^2\simeq m_H^2$, where the CP-even ($H$), the CP-odd ($A$) and the doubly-charged ($H^{\pm\pm}$) as well as the singly-charged ($H^\pm$) Higgs bosons are the triplet-like. We evaluate how the tree-level formulae are modified at the one-loop level. The $hhh$ coupling for the standard model-like Higgs boson ($h$) is also calculated at the one-loop level. One-loop corrections to these quantities can be large enough for identification of the model by future precision data at the LHC or the International Linear Collider.

preprint2012arXiv

Testing the Higgs triplet model with the mass difference at the LHC

In general, there can be mass differences among scalar bosons of the Higgs triplet field with the hypercharge of Y=1. In the Higgs triplet model, when the vacuum expectation value $v_Δ$ of the triplet field is much smaller than that $v$ ($\simeq 246$ GeV) of the Higgs doublet field as required by the electroweak precision data, a characteristic mass spectrum $ m_{H^{++}}^2-m_{H^+}^2\simeq m_{H^+}^2-m_{ϕ^0}^2(\equiv ξ)$ appears, where $m_{H^{++}}$, $m_{H^+}$, $m_{ϕ^0}$ are the masses of the doubly-charged ($H^{++}$), the singly-charged ($H^+$) and the neutral ($ϕ^0=H^0$ or $A^0$) scalar bosons, respectively. It should be emphasized that phenomenology with $ξ\neq 0$ is drastically different from that in the case with $ξ=0$ where the doubly-charged scalar boson decays into the same sign dilepton $\ell^+\ell^+$ or the diboson $W^+W^+$ depending on the size of $v_Δ$. We find that, in the case of $ξ> 0$, where $H^{++}$ is the heaviest, $H^{++}$ can be identified via the cascade decays such as $H^{++}\to H^+W^{+(*)}\to ϕ^0 W^{+(*)}W^{+(*)}\to b\bar{b}\ell^+ν\ell^+ν$. We outline how the Higgs triplet model can be explored in such a case at the LHC. By the determination of the mass spectrum, the model can be tested and further can be distinguished from the other models with doubly-charged scalar bosons.

Decoupling property of the supersymmetric Higgs sector with four doublets

In supersymmetric standard models with multi Higgs doublet fields, selfcoupling constants in the Higgs potential come only from the D-terms at the tree level. We investigate the decoupling property of additional two heavier Higgs doublet fields in the supersymmetric standard model with four Higgs doublets. In particular, we study how they can modify the predictions on the quantities well predicted in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM), when the extra doublet fields are rather heavy to be measured at collider experiments. The B-term mixing between these extra heavy Higgs bosons and the relatively light MSSM-like Higgs bosons can significantly change the predictions in the MSSM such as on the masses of MSSM-like Higgs bosons as well as the mixing angle for the two light CP-even scalar states. We first give formulae for deviations in the observables of the MSSM in the decoupling region for the extra two doublet fields. We then examine possible deviations in the Higgs sector numerically, and discuss their phenomenological implications.

Doubly-charged scalar bosons from the doublet

We consider the extended Higgs models, in which one of the isospin doublet scalar fields carries the hypercharge Y=3/2. Such a doublet field $Φ_{3/2}$ is composed of a doubly charged scalar boson as well as a singly charged one. We first discuss a simple model with $Φ_{3/2}$ (Model I), and study its collider phenomenology at the LHC. We then consider a new model for radiatively generating neutrino masses with a dark matter candidate (Model II), in which $Φ_{3/2}$ and an extra Y=1/2 doublet as well as vector-like singlet fermions carry the odd quantum number for an unbroken discrete $Z_2$ symmetry. We also discuss the neutrino mass model (Model III), in which the exact $Z_2$ parity in Model II is softly broken. It is found that the doubly charged scalar bosons in these models show different phenomenological aspects from those which appear in models with a Y=2 isospin singlet field or a Y=1 triplet one. They could be clearly distinguished at the LHC.

Impact of Inert Higgsino Dark Matter

We consider a recently proposed supersymmetric radiative seesaw model which is coupled with the minimal supergravity. The conventional R parity and $Z_2$ invariance are imposed, which ensures the existence of a multi-component dark matter system. We assume that the pair of the lightest neutralino $\tildeχ$ and the fermionic component $\tildeξ$ of the inert Higgs supermultiplet is dark matter. If $\tildeξ$ is lighter than $\tildeχ$, and the lightest neutral inert Higgs boson is kinematically forbidden to decay (third dark matter), the allowed region in the $m_0{\rm \mathchar`-}M_{1/2}$ plane increases considerably, where $m_0$ and $M_{1/2}$ are the universal soft-supersymmetry-breaking scalar and gaugino mass, respectively, although the dominant component of the multi-component dark matter system is $\tildeχ$. There is a wide allowed region above the recent LHC limit.

Light Charged Higgs bosons at the LHC in 2HDMs

We present a discussion of light charged Higgs boson searches at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in CP-conserving 2-Higgs Doublet Models (2HDMs). Taking into account all available experimental and theoretical constraints we review all possible processes that would allow for a detection of such a particle with a mass below the top quark mass. Two different types of processes are analysed: one that depends only on tan beta and on the charged Higgs boson mass because it involves only the charged Higgs boson Yukawa couplings; the other that depends on almost all model parameters, mainly due to the presence of Higgs self-couplings. We discuss the regions of parameter space of 2HDMs that can be covered be each type of process and define some guidelines for experimental searches at the LHC.

Triviality and vacuum stability bounds in the three-loop neutrino mass model

We study theoretical constraints on the parameter space under the conditions from vacuum stability and triviality in the three-loop radiative seesaw model with TeV-scale right-handed neutrinos which are odd under the $Z_2$ parity. In this model, some of the neutrino Yukawa coupling constants can be of the order of one. Requirement of strongly first order phase transition for successful electroweak baryogenes is also prefers order-one coupling constants in the scalar sector. Hence, it is important to clarify whether this model satisfies those theoretical conditions up to a given cutoff scale. It is found that the model can be consistent up to the scale above 10 TeV in the parameter region where the neutrino data, the lepton flavor violation data, the thermal relic abundance of dark matter as well as the requirement from the strongly first order phase transition are satisfied.

An R-parity conserving radiative neutrino mass model without right-handed neutrinos

The model proposed by A. Zee (1986) and K.S. Babu (1988) is a simple radiative seesaw model, in which tiny neutrino masses are generated at the two-loop level. We investigate a supersymmetric extension of the Zee-Babu model under R-parity conservation. The lightest superpartner particle can then be a dark matter candidate. We find that the neutrino data can be reproduced with satisfying current data from lepton flavour violation even in the scenario where not all the superpartner particles are heavy. Phenomenology at the Large Hadron Collider is also discussed.

ILC phenomenology in a TeV scale radiative seesaw model for neutrino mass, dark matter and baryon asymmetry

We discuss phenomenology in a new TeV scale model which would explain neutrino oscillation, dark matter, and baryon asymmetry of the Universe simultaneously by the dynamics of the extended Higgs sector and TeV-scale right-handed neutrinos. Tiny neutrino masses are generated at the three-loop level due to the exact $Z_2$ symmetry, by which the stability of the dark matter candidate is guaranteed. The model provides various discriminative predictions in Higgs phenomenology, which can be tested at the Large Hadron Collider and the International Linear Collider.

Multi-Higgs portal dark matter under the CDMS II results

In a scenario of Higgs portal dark matter, Higgs exchange processes are essential for both dark matter annihilation in the early Universe and direct search experiments. The CDMS II collaboration has recently released their final results on direct dark matter searches. We study a scalar dark matter model with multi-Higgs doublets under the constraint from the CDMS II results and also from the WMAP data. We find that the possible maximal value for the branching ratio of the invisible decay of the Higgs boson can be significantly greater than that in the Higgs portal model with one Higgs doublet, in particular, for the case of the so-called Type-X Yukawa interaction. Therefore, the search for the invisible decay of the Higgs boson at the CERN Large Hadron Collider and future collider experiments would provide useful information not only for the nature of dark matter but also for the structure of the Higgs sector even without directly detecting any extra scalar boson.

Probing the Majorana nature of TeV-scale radiative seesaw models at collider experiments

A general feature of TeV-scale radiative seesaw models, in which tiny neutrino masses are generated via loop corrections, is an extended scalar (Higgs) sector. Another feature is the Majorana nature; e.g., introducing right-handed neutrinos with TeV-scale Majorana masses under the discrete symmetry, or otherwise introducing some lepton number violating interactions in the scalar sector. We study phenomenological aspects of these models at collider experiments. We find that, while properties of the extended Higgs sector of these models can be explored to some extent, the Majorana nature of the models can also be tested directly at the International Linear Collider via the electron-positron and electron-electron collision experiments.

Two important features of TeV-scale radiative seesaw models, in which tiny neutrino masses are generated at the quantum level, are an extended scalar (Higgs) sector and the Majorana nature. We study phenomenological aspects of these models at the ILC. It is found that the Majorana nature of the models can be tested directly via the electron-positron and electron-electron collision experiments.

Tau polarization effects in the CNGS tau-neutrino appearance experiments

We studied tau polarization effects on the decay distributions of tau produced in the CNGS tau-neutrino appearance experiments. We show that energy and angular distributions for the decay products in the laboratory frame are significantly affected by the tau polarization. Rather strong azimuthal asymmetry about the tau momentum axis is predicted, which may have observable consequences in experiments even with small statistics.
