Non-commutative cluster Lagrangians

The space Loc(m,S) of rank m flat bundles on a closed surface S is K_2-symplectic. A threefold M bounding S gives rise a K_2-Lagrangian in Loc(m,S) given by the flat bundles on S extending to M. We generalize this, replacing the zero section in the cotangent bundle to M by certain singular Lagrangians. First, we introduce Q-diagrams in threefolds. They are collections Q of smooth cooriented surfaces, intersecting transversally everywhere but in a finite set of quadruple crossing points. We require that shifting any surface of the collection from such a point in the direction of its coorientation creates a simplex with the cooriented out faces. The Q-diagrams are 3d analogs of bipartite ribbon graphs. Let L be the Lagrangian in the cotangent bundle to M given by the union of the zero section and the conormal bundles to the cooriented surfaces of Q. Let X(L) be the stack of admissible dg-sheaves on M with the microlocal support in L, whose microlocalization at the conormal bundle to each cooriented surface of Q is a rank one local system. We introduce the boundary dL of L. It is a singular Lagrangian in a symplectic space, providing a symplectic stack X(dL), and a restriction functor from X(L) to X(dL). The image of the latter is Lagrangian. We show that, under mild conditions on Q, this Lagrangian has a cluster description, and so it is a K_2-Lagrangian. It also has a simple description in the non-commutative setting.

Burnside rings and volume forms with logarithmic poles

We develop a theory of Burnside rings in the context of birational equivalences of algebraic varieties equipped with logarithmic volume forms. We introduce a residue homomorphism and construct an additive invariant of birational morphisms. We also define a specialization homomorphism.

Multiplication kernels

We introduce the notion of multiplication kernels of birational and $D$-module type and give various examples. We also introduce the notion of a semi-classical multiplication kernel associated with an integrable system and discuss its quantization. Finally, we discuss geometric and algebraic aspects of method of separation of variables, and describe hypothetically a cyclic $D$-module for the generalized multiplication kernels for Hitchin systems for groups $GL_r$.

A Generalization of King's Equation via Noncommutative Geometry

We introduce a framework in noncommutative geometry consisting of a $*$-algebra $\mathcal A$, a bimodule $Ω^1$ endowed with a derivation $\mathcal A\to Ω^1$ and with a Hermitian structure $Ω^1\otimes \barΩ^1\to \mathcal A$ (a "noncommutative Kähler form"), and a cyclic 1-cochain $\mathcal A\to \mathbb C$ whose coboundary is determined by the previous structures. These data give moment map equations on the space of connections on an arbitrary finitely-generated projective $\mathcal A$-module. As particular cases, we obtain a large class of equations in algebra (King's equations for representations of quivers, including ADHM equations), in classical gauge theory (Hermitian Yang-Mills equations, Hitchin equations, Bogomolny and Nahm equations, etc.), as well as in noncommutative gauge theory by Connes, Douglas and Schwarz. We also discuss Nekrasov's beautiful proposal for re-interpreting noncommutative instantons on $\mathbb{C}^n\simeq \mathbb{R}^{2n}$ as infinite-dimensional solutions of King's equation $$\sum_{i=1}^n [T_i^\dagger, T_i]=\hbar\cdot n\cdot\mathrm{Id}_{\mathcal H}$$ where $\mathcal H$ is a Hilbert space completion of a finitely-generated $\mathbb C[T_1,\dots,T_n]$-module (e.g. an ideal of finite codimension).

Pre-Calabi-Yau algebras and double Poisson brackets

We give an explicit formula showing how the double Poisson algebra introduced in \cite{VdB} appears as a particular part of a pre-Calabi-Yau structure, i.e. cyclically invariant, with respect to the natural inner form, solution of the Maurer-Cartan equation on $A\oplus A^*$. Specific part of this solution is described, which is in one-to-one correspondence with the double Poisson algebra structures. The result holds for any associative algebra $A$ and emphasizes the special role of the fourth component of a pre-Calabi-Yau structure in this respect. As a consequence we have that appropriate pre-Calabi-Yau structures induce a Poisson brackets on representation spaces $({\rm Rep}_n A)^{Gl_n}$ for any associative algebra $A$.

Canonical bases for cluster algebras

In previous work, the first three authors conjectured that the ring of regular functions on a natural class of affine log Calabi-Yau varieties (those with maximal boundary) has a canonical vector space basis parameterized by the integral tropical points of the mirror. Further, the structure constants for the multiplication rule in this basis should be given by counting broken lines (certain combinatorial objects, morally the tropicalisations of holomorphic discs). Here we prove the conjecture in the case of cluster varieties, where the statement is a more precise form of the Fock-Goncharov dual basis conjecture. In particular, under suitable hypotheses, for each Y the partial compactification of an affine cluster variety U given by allowing some frozen variables to vanish, we obtain canonical bases for the ring of functions on Y extending to a basis for functions on U. Each choice of seed canonically identifies the parameterizing sets of these bases with integral points in a polyhedral cone. These results specialize to basis results of combinatorial representation theory. For example, by considering the open double Bruhat cell U in the basic affine space Y we obtain a canonical basis of each irreducible representation of SL_r, parameterized by a set which each choice of seed identifies with integral points of a lattice polytope. These bases and polytopes are all constructed essentially without representation theoretic considerations. Along the way, our methods prove a number of conjectures in cluster theory, including positivity of the Laurent phenomenon for cluster algebras of geometric type.

Flat surfaces and stability structures

We identify spaces of half-translation surfaces, equivalently complex curves with quadratic differential, with spaces of stability structures on Fukaya-type categories of punctured surfaces. This is achieved by new methods involving the complete classification of objects in these categories, which are defined in an elementary way. We also introduce a number of tools to deal with surfaces of infinite area, where structures similar to those in cluster algebra appear.

Algebra of the infrared and secondary polytopes

We study algebraic structures ($L_\infty$ and $A_\infty$-algebras) introduced by Gaiotto, Moore and Witten in their recent work devoted to certain supersymmetric 2-dimensional massive field theories. We show that such structures can be systematically produced in any number of dimensions by using the geometry of secondary polytopes, esp. their factorization properties. In particular, in 2 dimensions, we produce, out of a polyhedral "coefficient system", a dg-category $R$ with a semi-orthogonal decomposition and an $L_\infty$-algebra $\mathfrak g$. We show that $\mathfrak g$ is quasi-isomorphic to the ordered Hochschild complex of $R$, governing deformations preserving the semi-orthogonal decomposition. This allows us to give a more precise mathematical formulation of the (conjectural) alternative description of the Fukaya-Seidel category of a Kahler manifold endowed with a holomorphic Morse function.

Bogomolov-Tian-Todorov theorems for Landau-Ginzburg models

In this paper we prove the smoothness of the moduli space of Landau-Ginzburg models. We formulate and prove a Tian-Todorov theorem for the deformations of Landau-Ginzburg models, develop the necessary Hodge theory for varieties with potentials, and prove a double degeneration statement needed for the unobstructedness result. We discuss the various definitions of Hodge numbers for non-commutative Hodge structures of Landau-Ginzburg type and the role they play in mirror symmetry. We also interpret the resulting families of de Rham complexes attacted to a potential in terms of mirror symmetry for one parameter families of symplectic Fano manifolds and argue that modulo a natural triviality property the moduli spaces of Landau-Ginzburg models posses canonical special coordinates.

Wall-crossing structures in Donaldson-Thomas invariants, integrable systems and Mirror Symmetry

We introduce the notion of Wall-Crossing Structure and discuss it in several examples including complex integrable systems, Donaldson-Thomas invariants and Mirror Symmetry. For a big class of non-compact Calabi-Yau 3-folds we construct complex integrable systems of Hitchin type with the base given by the moduli space of deformations of those 3-folds. Then Donaldson-Thomas invariants of the Fukaya category of such a Calabi-Yau 3-fold can be (conjecturally) described in two more ways: in terms of the attractor flow on the base of the corresponding complex integrable system and in terms of the skeleton of the mirror dual to the total space of the integrable system. The paper also contains a discussion of some material related to the main subject, e.g. Betti model of Hitchin systems with irregular singularities, WKB asymptotics of connections depending on a small parameter, attractor points in the moduli space of complex structures of a compact Calabi-Yau 3-fold, relation to cluster varieties, etc.

Cohomological Hall algebra, exponential Hodge structures and motivic Donaldson-Thomas invariants

We define a new type of Hall algebras associated e.g. with quivers with polynomial potentials. The main difference with the conventional definition is that we use cohomology of the stack of representations instead of constructible sheaves or functions. In order to take into account the potential we introduce a generalization of theory of mixed Hodge structures, related to exponential integrals. Generating series of our Cohomological Hall algebra is a generalization of the motivic Donaldson-Thomas invariants introduced in arXiv:0811.2435. Also we prove a new integrality property of motivic Donaldson-Thomas invariants.

Lyapunov spectrum of square-tiled cyclic covers

A cyclic cover over the Riemann sphere branched at four points inherits a natural flat structure from the "pillow" flat structure on the basic sphere. We give an explicit formula for all individual Lyapunov exponents of the Hodge bundle over the corresponding arithmetic Teichmuller curve. The key technical element is evaluation of degrees of line subbundles of the Hodge bundle, corresponding to eigenspaces of the induced action of deck transformations.

Quantization on Curves

Deformation quantization on varieties with singularities offers perspectives that are not found on manifolds. Essential deformations are classified by the Harrison component of Hochschild cohomology, that vanishes on smooth manifolds and reflects information about singularities. The Harrison 2-cochains are symmetric and are interpreted in terms of abelian $*$-products. This paper begins a study of abelian quantization on plane curves over $\Crm$, being algebraic varieties of the form R2/I where I is a polynomial in two variables; that is, abelian deformations of the coordinate algebra C[x,y]/(I). To understand the connection between the singularities of a variety and cohomology we determine the algebraic Hochschild (co-)homology and its Barr-Gerstenhaber-Schack decomposition. Homology is the same for all plane curves C[x,y]/(I), but the cohomology depends on the local algebra of the singularity of I at the origin.

Operads and Motives in Deformation Quantization

This paper is dedicated to the memory of Moshe Flato, and will appear in Lett. Math. Phys. 48 (1) It became clear during last 5-6 years that the algebraic world of associative algebras (abelian categories, triangulated categories, etc) has many deep connections with the geometric world of two-dimensional surfaces. One of manifestations of this is Deligne's conjecture (1993) which says that on the cohomological Hochschild complex of any associative algebra naturally acts the operad of singular chains in the little discs operad. Recently D. Tamarkin discovered that the operad of chains of the little discs operad is formal, i.e. it is homotopy equivalent to its cohomology. From this fact and from Deligne's conjecture follows almost immediately my formality result in deformation quantization. I review the situation as it looks now. Also I conjecture that the motivic Galois group acts on deformation quantizations, and speculate on possible relations of higher-dimensional algebras and of motives to quantum field theories.

Noncommutative smooth spaces

We make an attempt to develop "noncommutative algebraic geometry" in which noncommutative affine schemes are in one-to-one correspondence with associative algebras. In the first part we discuss various aspects of smoothness in affine noncommutative algebraic geometry. The main example for us is the noncommutative affine space. The algebra of functions on this space is free finitely generated algebra. We propose a general correspondence principle which allows us to give definitions of various differential-geometric structures in the noncommutative setting. In the second part we propose a definition of noncommutative spaces based on a version of flat topology. Our category of noncommutative spaces contains as full subcategories both the category of quasi-compact separated schemes and the opposite category to the category of associative algebras. In the third part we describe the noncommutative projective space and the derived category of coherent sheaves on it.

Deformation quantization of Poisson manifolds, I

I prove that every finite-dimensional Poisson manifold X admits a canonical deformation quantization. Informally, it means that the set of equivalence classes of associative algebras close to the algebra of functions on X is in one-to-one correspondence with the set of equivalence classes of Poisson structures on X modulo diffeomorphisms. In fact, a more general statement is proven ("Formality conjecture"), relating the Lie superalgebra of polyvector fields on X and the Hochschild complex of the algebra of functions on X. Coefficients in explicit formulas for the deformed product can be interpreted as correlators in a topological open string theory, although I do not use explicitly the language of functional integrals. One of corollaries is a justification of the orbit method in the representation theory.

Geometry of determinants of elliptic operators

This paper is essentially a short version of hep-th/9404046. We compute multiplicative anomaly det(AB)/(detA detB) =F(A,B) for elliptic pseudo-differential operators (PDOs) A, B on a closed manifold M in terms of their symbols. We prove that F(A,B)=1 for elliptic differential operators close to positive-definite ones on an odd-dimensional M. For such M we introduce a holomorphic determinant. Its monodromy lies in a finite group of roots of unity. In general case, we relate the multiplicative anomaly with a central extension of the group of elliptic symbols and with an invariant quadratic form on this extension. We compute the Lie algebra of the central extension in terms of logarithmic symbols. The main tool is a new trace-type functional defined on classical PDOs of non-integer orders. A canonical det of elliptic PDOs generalizing the zeta-regularized det is introduced.
