Right-angled billiards and volumes of moduli spaces of quadratic differentials on $\mathbb{C}P^1$

We use the relation between the volumes of the strata of meromorphic quadratic differentials with at most simple poles on the Riemann sphere and counting functions of the number of (bands of) closed geodesics in associated flat metrics with singularities to prove a very explicit formula for the volume of each such stratum conjectured by M. Kontsevich a decade ago. The proof is based on a formula for the Lyapunov exponents of the geodesic flow on the moduli space, which gives a recursive formula from which the volumes could be recovered. An appendix with an ergodic theorem proved by Jon Chaika is added to the current version. Applying this ergodic theorem to the Teichmueller geodesic flow we obtain EXACT quadratic asymptotics for the number of (bands of) closed trajectories and for the number of generalized diagonals in almost all right-angled billiards. All coefficients in the asymptotics (expressed in terms of the associated Siegel-Veech constants) are explicitly computed.

The Magic Wand Theorem of A. Eskin and M. Mirzakhani

This is the English translation of a short note published by Gazette des Mathématiciens. The author was asked to present the recent work of Alex Eskin and of Maryam Mirzakhani, arXiv:1302.3320, and their joint work with Amir Mohammadi, arXiv:1305.3015, on SL(2,R)-action on the moduli space of Abelian differentials. This is a popularization paper with no proofs. Its only purpose is to suggest some motivations, and to outline possible applications considering billiards in polygons as an example.

Zero Lyapunov exponents of the Hodge bundle

By the results of G. Forni and of R. Treviño, the Lyapunov spectrum of the Hodge bundle over the Teichmüller geodesic flow on the strata of Abelian and of quadratic differentials does not contain zeroes even though for certain invariant submanifolds zero exponents are present in the Lyapunov spectrum. In all previously known examples, the zero exponents correspond to those PSL(2,R)-invariant subbundles of the real Hodge bundle for which the monodromy of the Gauss-Manin connection acts by isometries of the Hodge metric. We present an example of an arithmetic Teichmüller curve, for which the real Hodge bundle does not contain any PSL(2,R)-invariant, continuous subbundles, and nevertheless its spectrum of Lyapunov exponents contains zeroes. We describe the mechanism of this phenomenon; it covers the previously known situation as a particular case. Conjecturally, this is the only way zero exponents can appear in the Lyapunov spectrum of the Hodge bundle for any PSL(2,R)-invariant probability measure.

Counting generalized Jenkins-Strebel differentials

We study the combinatorial geometry of "lattice" Jenkins--Strebel differentials with simple zeroes and simple poles on $\mathbb{C}P^1$ and of the corresponding counting functions. Developing the results of M. Kontsevich we evaluate the leading term of the symmetric polynomial counting the number of such "lattice" Jenkins-Strebel differentials having all zeroes on a single singular layer. This allows us to express the number of general "lattice" Jenkins-Strebel differentials as an appropriate weighted sum over decorated trees. The problem of counting Jenkins-Strebel differentials is equivalent to the problem of counting pillowcase covers, which serve as integer points in appropriate local coordinates on strata of moduli spaces of meromorphic quadratic differentials. This allows us to relate our counting problem to calculations of volumes of these strata . A very explicit expression for the volume of any stratum of meromorphic quadratic differentials recently obtained by the authors leads to an interesting combinatorial identity for our sums over trees.

Lyapunov spectrum of square-tiled cyclic covers

A cyclic cover over the Riemann sphere branched at four points inherits a natural flat structure from the "pillow" flat structure on the basic sphere. We give an explicit formula for all individual Lyapunov exponents of the Hodge bundle over the corresponding arithmetic Teichmuller curve. The key technical element is evaluation of degrees of line subbundles of the Hodge bundle, corresponding to eigenspaces of the induced action of deck transformations.

Square-tiled cyclic covers

A cyclic cover of the complex projective line branched at four appropriate points has a natural structure of a square-tiled surface. We describe the combinatorics of such a square-tiled surface, the geometry of the corresponding Teichmüller curve, and compute the Lyapunov exponents of the determinant bundle over the Teichmüller curve with respect to the geodesic flow. This paper includes a new example (announced by G. Forni and C. Matheus in \cite{Forni:Matheus}) of a Teichmüller curve of a square-tiled cyclic cover in a stratum of Abelian differentials in genus four with a maximally degenerate Kontsevich--Zorich spectrum (the only known example found previously by Forni in genus three also corresponds to a square-tiled cyclic cover \cite{ForniSurvey}). We present several new examples of Teichmüller curves in strata of holomorphic and meromorphic quadratic differentials with maximally degenerate Kontsevich--Zorich spectrum. Presumably, these examples cover all possible Teichmüller curves with maximally degenerate spectrum. We prove that this is indeed the case within the class of square-tiled cyclic covers.

Explicit Jenkins-Strebel representatives of all strata of Abelian and quadratic differentials

Moduli spaces of Abelian and quadratic differentials are stratified by multiplicities of zeroes; connected components of the strata correspond to ergodic components of the Teichmuller geodesic flow. It is known that the strata are not necessarily connected; the connected components were recently classified by M. Kontsevich and the author and by E. Lanneau. The strata can be also viewed as families of flat metrics with conical singularities and with Z/2Z-holonomy. For every connected component of each stratum of Abelian and quadratic differentials we construct an explicit representative which is a Jenkins-Strebel differential with a single cylinder. By an elementary variation of this construction we represent almost every Abelian (quadratic) differential in the corresponding connected component of the stratum as a polygon with identified pairs of edges, where combinatorics of identifications is explicitly described. Specifically, the combinatorics is expressed in terms of a generalized permutation. For any component of any stratum of Abelian and quadratic differentials we construct a generalized permutation (linear involution) in the corresponding extended Rauzy class.

Flat Surfaces

Various problems of geometry, topology and dynamical systems on surfaces as well as some questions concerning one-dimensional dynamical systems lead to the study of closed surfaces endowed with a flat metric with several cone-type singularities. Such flat surfaces are naturally organized into families which appear to be isomorphic to the moduli spaces of holomorphic one-forms. One can obtain much information about the geometry and dynamics of an individual flat surface by studying both its orbit under the Teichmuller geodesic flow and under the linear group action. In particular, the Teichmuller geodesic flow plays the role of a time acceleration machine (renormalization procedure) which allows to study the asymptotic behavior of interval exchange transformations and of surface foliations. This long survey is an attempt to present some selected ideas, concepts and facts in Teichmuller dynamics in a playful way.

Multiple Saddle Connections on Flat Surfaces and Principal Boundary of the Moduli Spaces of Quadratic Differentials

We describe typical degenerations of quadratic differentials thus describing ``generic cusps'' of the moduli space of meromorphic quadratic differentials with at most simple poles. The part of the boundary of the moduli space which does not arise from ``generic'' degenerations is often negligible in problems involving information on compactification of the moduli space. However, even for a typical degeneration one may have several short loops on the Riemann surface which shrink simultaneously. We explain this phenomenon, describe all rigid configurations of short loops, present a detailed description of analogs of desingularized stable curves arising here, and show how one can reconstruct a Riemann surface endowed with a quadratic differential which is close to a ``cusp'' by the corresponding point at the principal boundary.
