Gradient flow formulation of diffusion equations in the Wasserstein space over a metric graph

This paper contains two contributions in the study of optimal transport on metric graphs. Firstly, we prove a Benamou-Brenier formula for the Wasserstein distance, which establishes the equivalence of static and dynamical optimal transport. Secondly, in the spirit of Jordan-Kinderlehrer-Otto, we show that McKean-Vlasov equations can be formulated as gradient flow of the free energy in the Wasserstein space of probability measures. The proofs of these results are based on careful regularisation arguments to circumvent some of the difficulties arising in metric graphs, namely, branching of geodesics and the failure of semi-convexity of entropy functionals in the Wasserstein space.

Tamed spaces -- Dirichlet spaces with distribution-valued Ricci bounds

We develop the theory of tamed spaces which are Dirichlet spaces with distribution-valued lower bounds on the Ricci curvature and investigate these from an Eulerian point of view. To this end we analyze in detail singular perturbations of Dirichlet form by a broad class of distributions. The distributional Ricci bound is then formulated in terms of an integrated version of the Bochner inequality using the perturbed energy form and generalizing the well-known Bakry-Émery curvature-dimension condition. Among other things we show the equivalence of distributional Ricci bounds to gradient estimates for the heat semigroup in terms of the Feynman-Kac semigroup induced by the taming distribution as well as consequences in terms of functional inequalities. We give many examples of tamed spaces including in particular Riemannian manifolds with either interior singularities or singular boundary behavior.

Entropic curvature and convergence to equilibrium for mean-field dynamics on discrete spaces

We consider non-linear evolution equations arising from mean-field limits of particle systems on discrete spaces. We investigate a notion of curvature bounds for these dynamics based on convexity of the free energy along interpolations in a discrete transportation distance related to the gradient flow structure of the dynamics. This notion extends the one for linear Markov chain dynamics studied by Erbar and Maas. We show that positive curvature bounds entail several functional inequalities controlling the convergence to equilibrium of the dynamics. We establish explicit curvature bounds for several examples of mean-field limits of various classical models from statistical mechanics.

From large deviations to Wasserstein gradient flows in multiple dimensions

We study the large deviation rate functional for the empirical distribution of independent Brownian particles with drift. In one dimension, it has been shown by Adams, Dirr, Peletier and Zimmer that this functional is asymptotically equivalent (in the sense of $Γ$-convergence) to the Jordan--Kinderlehrer--Otto functional arising in the Wasserstein gradient flow structure of the Fokker--Planck equation. In higher dimensions, part of this statement (the lower bound) has been recently proved by Duong, Laschos and Renger, but the upper bound remained open, since the proof in \cite{DLR2013} relies on regularity properties of optimal transport maps that are restricted to one dimension. In this note we present a new proof of the upper bound, thereby generalising the result of \cite{ADPZ2011} to arbitrary dimensions.

Gradient flow structure for McKean-Vlasov equations on discrete spaces

In this work, we show that a family of non-linear mean-field equations on discrete spaces can be viewed as a gradient flow of a natural free energy functional with respect to a certain metric structure we make explicit. We also prove that this gradient flow structure arises as the limit of the gradient flow structures of a natural sequence of N-particle dynamics, as N goes to infinity.

Poincaré, modified logarithmic Sobolev and isoperimetric inequalities for Markov chains with non-negative Ricci curvature

We study functional inequalities for Markov chains on discrete spaces with entropic Ricci curvature bounded from below. Our main results are that when curvature is non-negative, but not necessarily positive, the spectral gap, the Cheeger isoperimetric constant and the modified logarithmic Sobolev constant of the chain can be bounded from below by a constant that only depends on the diameter of the space, with respect to a suitable metric. These estimates are discrete analogues of classical results of Riemannian geometry obtained by Li and Yau, Buser and Wang.

Ricci curvature bounds for weakly interacting Markov chains

We establish a general perturbative method to prove entropic Ricci curvature bounds for interacting stochastic particle systems. We apply this method to obtain curvature bounds in several examples, namely: Glauber dynamics for a class of spin systems including the Ising and Curie--Weiss models, a class of hard-core models and random walks on groups induced by a conjugacy invariant set of generators.

Smoothing and non-smoothing via a flow tangent to the Ricci flow

We study a transformation of metric measure spaces introduced by Gigli and Mantegazza consisting in replacing the original distance with the length distance induced by the transport distance between heat kernel measures. We study the smoothing effect of this procedure in two important examples. Firstly, we show that in the case of some Euclidean cones, a singularity persists at the apex. Secondly, we generalize the construction to a sub-Riemannian manifold, namely the Heisenberg group, and show that it regularizes the space instantaneously to a smooth Riemannian manifold.

Optimal transport, Cheeger energies and contractivity of dynamic transport distances in extended spaces

We introduce the setting of extended metric-topological measure spaces as a general "Wiener-like" framework for optimal transport problems and nonsmooth metric analysis in infinite dimension. After a brief review of optimal transport tools for general Radon measures, we discuss the notions of the Cheeger energy, of the Radon measures concentrated on absolutely continuous curves, and of the induced "dynamic transport distances." We study their main properties and their links with the theory of Dirichlet forms and the Bakry-Émery curvature condition, in particular concerning the contractivity properties and the EVI formulation of the induced Heat semigroup.

Curvature bounds for configuration spaces

We show that the configuration space over a manifold M inherits many curvature properties of the manifold. For instance, we show that a lower Ricci curvature bound on M implies for the configuration space a lower Ricci curvature bound in the sense of Lott-Sturm-Villani, the Bochner inequality, gradient estimates and Wasserstein contraction. Moreover, we show that the heat flow on the configuration space, or the infinite independent particle process, can be identified as the gradient flow of the entropy.

On the Equivalence of the Entropic Curvature-Dimension Condition and Bochner's Inequality on Metric Measure Spaces

We prove the equivalence of the curvature-dimension bounds of Lott-Sturm-Villani (via entropy and optimal transport) and of Bakry--Émery (via energy and Γ_2$-calculus) in complete generality for infinitesimally Hilbertian metric measure spaces. In particular, we establish the full Bochner inequality on such metric measure spaces. Moreover, we deduce new contraction bounds for the heat flow on Riemannian manifolds and on mms in terms of the $L^2$-Wasserstein distance.

Gradient flow structures for discrete porous medium equations

We consider discrete porous medium equations of the form \partial_t ρ_t = Δϕ(ρ_t), where Δis the generator of a reversible continuous time Markov chain on a finite set X, and ϕis an increasing function. We show that these equations arise as gradient flows of certain entropy functionals with respect to suitable non-local transportation metrics. This may be seen as a discrete analogue of the Wasserstein gradient flow structure for porous medium equations in R^n discovered by Otto. We present a one-dimensional counterexample to geodesic convexity and discuss Gromov-Hausdorff convergence to the Wasserstein metric.

preprint2012arXiv

Gradient flows of the entropy for jump processes

We introduce a new transportation distance between probability measures that is built from a Lévy jump kernel. It is defined via a non-local variant of the Benamou-Brenier formula. We study geometric and topological properties of this distance, in particular we prove existence of geodesics. For translation invariant jump kernels we identify the semigroup generated by the associated non-local operator as the gradient flow of the relative entropy w.r.t. the new distance and show that the entropy is convex along geodesics.

Ricci curvature of finite Markov chains via convexity of the entropy

We study a new notion of Ricci curvature that applies to Markov chains on discrete spaces. This notion relies on geodesic convexity of the entropy and is analogous to the one introduced by Lott, Sturm, and Villani for geodesic measure spaces. In order to apply to the discrete setting, the role of the Wasserstein metric is taken over by a different metric, having the property that continuous time Markov chains are gradient flows of the entropy. Using this notion of Ricci curvature we prove discrete analogues of fundamental results by Bakry--Emery and Otto--Villani. Furthermore we show that Ricci curvature bounds are preserved under tensorisation. As a special case we obtain the sharp Ricci curvature lower bound for the discrete hypercube.

Low noise limit for the invariant measure of a multi-dimensional stochastic Allen-Cahn equation

We study the invariant measure of a discretized stochastic Allen-Cahn equation in d+1 dimensions in the low noise limit. We consider a cuboidal domain and impose the two stable phases as boundary conditions at two opposite faces. We then take a joint limit where the temperature and the mesh of the discretization go to zero while the size of the domain grows. Our main result is that the invariant measures concentrate exponentially fast around the minimizers of the free energy functional if the domain does not grow too fast.
