An inhomogeneous porous medium equation with large data: well-posedness

We study solutions of a Euclidean weighted porous medium equation when the weight behaves at spacial infinity like $|x|^{-γ}$, for $γ\in [0,2)$, and is allowed to be singular at the origin. In particular we show local-in-time existence and uniqueness for a class of large initial data which includes as "endpoints" those growing at a rate of $ |x|^{(2-γ)/(m-1)}$, in a weighted $L^1$-average sense. We also identify global-existence and blow-up classes, whose respective forms strongly support the claim that such a growth rate is optimal, at least for positive solutions. As a crucial step in our existence proof we establish a local smoothing effect for large data without resorting to the classical Aronson-Bénilan inequality and using the Bénilan-Crandall inequality instead, which may be of independent interest since the latter holds in much more general settings.

Some rigidity results for Sobolev inequalities and related PDEs on Cartan-Hadamard manifolds

The Cartan-Hadamard conjecture states that, on every $n$-dimensional Cartan-Hadamard manifold $ \mathbb{M}^n $, the isoperimetric inequality holds with Euclidean optimal constant, and any set attaining equality is necessarily isometric to a Euclidean ball. This conjecture was settled, with positive answer, for $n \le 4$. It was also shown that its validity in dimension $n$ ensures that every $p$-Sobolev inequality ($ 1 < p < n $) holds on $ \mathbb{M}^n $ with Euclidean optimal constant. In this paper we address the problem of classifying all Cartan-Hadamard manifolds supporting an optimal function for the Sobolev inequality. We prove that, under the validity of the $n$-dimensional Cartan-Hadamard conjecture, the only such manifold is $ \mathbb{R}^n $, and therefore any optimizer is an Aubin-Talenti profile (up to isometries). In particular, this is the case in dimension $n \le 4$. Optimal functions for the Sobolev inequality are weak solutions to the critical $p$-Laplace equation. Thus, in the second part of the paper, we address the classification of radial solutions (not necessarily optimizers) to such a PDE. Actually, we consider the more general critical or supercritical equation \[ -Δ_p u = u^q \, , \quad u>0 \, , \qquad \text{on } \mathbb{M}^n \, , \] where $q \ge p^*-1$. We show that if there exists a radial finite-energy solution, then $\mathbb{M}^n$ is necessarily isometric to $\mathbb{R}^n$, $q=p^*-1$ and $u$ is an Aubin-Talenti profile. Furthermore, on model manifolds, we describe the asymptotic behavior of radial solutions not lying in the energy space $\dot{W}^{1,p}(\mathbb{M}^n)$, studying separately the $p$-stochastically complete and incomplete cases.

The porous medium equation with large data on Cartan-Hadamard manifolds under general curvature bounds

We consider very weak solutions of the Cauchy problem for the porous medium equation on Cartan-Hadamard manifolds, that are assumed to satisfy general curvature bounds and to be stochastically complete. We identify a class of initial data that can grow at infinity at a prescribed rate, which depends on the assumed curvature bounds through an integral function, such that the corresponding solution exists at least on $[0,T]$ for a suitable $T>0$. The maximal existence time $T$ is estimated in terms of a suitable weighted norm of the initial datum. Our results are sharp, in the sense that slower growth rates yield global existence, whereas one can construct data with critical growth for which the corresponding solutions blow up in finite time. Under further assumptions, uniqueness of very weak solutions is also proved, in the same growth class.

Wasserstein stability of porous medium-type equations on manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded below

Given a complete, connected Riemannian manifold $ \mathbb{M}^n $ with Ricci curvature bounded from below, we discuss the stability of the solutions of a porous medium-type equation with respect to the 2-Wasserstein distance. We produce (sharp) stability estimates under negative curvature bounds, which to some extent generalize well-known results by Sturm and Otto-Westdickenberg. The strategy of the proof mainly relies on a quantitative $L^1-L^\infty$ smoothing property of the equation considered, combined with the Hamiltonian approach developed by Ambrosio, Mondino and Savaré in a metric-measure setting.

Fast diffusion on noncompact manifolds: well-posedness theory and connections with semilinear elliptic equations

We investigate the well-posedness of the fast diffusion equation (FDE) in a wide class of noncompact Riemannian manifolds. Existence and uniqueness of solutions for globally integrable initial data was established in [5]. However, in the Euclidean space, it is known from Herrero and Pierre [20] that the Cauchy problem associated with the FDE is well posed for initial data that are merely in $ L^1_{\mathrm{loc}} $. We establish here that such data still give rise to global solutions on general Riemannian manifolds. If, in addition, the radial Ricci curvature satisfies a suitable pointwise bound from below (possibly diverging to $-\infty$ at spatial infinity), we prove that also uniqueness holds, for the same type of data, in the class of strong solutions. Besides, under the further assumption that the initial datum is in $L^2_{\mathrm{loc}}$ and nonnegative, a minimal solution is shown to exist, and we are able to establish uniqueness of purely (nonnegative) distributional solutions, which to our knowledge was not known before even in the Euclidean space. The required curvature bound is in fact sharp, since on model manifolds it turns out to be equivalent to stochastic completeness, and it was shown in [13] that uniqueness for the FDE fails even in the class of bounded solutions on manifolds that are not stochastically complete. Qualitatively this amounts to asking that the curvature diverges at most quadratically at infinity. A crucial ingredient of the uniqueness result is the proof of nonexistence of distributional subsolutions to certain semilinear elliptic equations with power nonlinearities, of independent interest.

Nonexistence of radial optimal functions for the Sobolev inequality on Cartan-Hadamard manifolds

It is well known that the Euclidean Sobolev inequality holds on any Cartan-Hadamard manifold of dimension $ n\ge 3 $, i.e. any complete, simply connected Riemannian manifold with nonpositive sectional curvature. As a byproduct of the Cartan-Hadamard conjecture, a longstanding problem in the mathematical literature settled only very recently in a breakthrough paper by Ghomi and Spruck, we can now assert that the optimal constant is also Euclidean, namely it coincides with the one achieved in the Euclidean space $ \mathbb{R}^n $ by the Aubin-Talenti functions. One may ask whether there exist at all optimal functions on a generic Cartan-Hadamard manifold $ \mathbb{M}^n $. What we prove here, with ad hoc arguments that do not take advantage of the validity of the Cartan-Hadamard conjecture, is that this is false at least for functions that are radially symmetric with respect to the geodesic distance from a fixed pole. More precisely, we show that if the optimum in the Sobolev inequality is achieved by some radial function, then $\mathbb{M}^n $ must be isometric to $ \mathbb{R}^n $.

Nonlinear characterizations of stochastic completeness

We prove that conservation of probability for the free heat semigroup on a Riemannian manifold $M$ (namely stochastic completeness), hence a linear property, is equivalent to uniqueness of positive, bounded solutions to nonlinear evolution equations of fast diffusion type on $M$ of the form $u_t=Δϕ(u)$, $ϕ$ being an arbitrary concave, increasing positive function, regular outside the origin and with $ϕ(0)=0$. Either property is also shown to be equivalent to nonexistence of nontrivial, nonnegative bounded solutions to the elliptic equation $ΔW=ϕ^{-1}(W)$ with $ϕ$ as above. As a consequence, explicit criteria for uniqueness or nonuniqueness of bounded solutions to fast diffusion-type equations on manifolds, and on existence or nonexistence of bounded solutions to the mentioned elliptic equations on $M$ are given, these being the first results on such issues.

Sobolev-type inequalities on Cartan-Hadamard manifolds and applications to some nonlinear diffusion equations

We investigate the validity, as well as the failure, of Sobolev-type inequalities on Cartan-Hadamard manifolds under suitable bounds on the sectional and the Ricci curvatures. We prove that if the sectional curvatures are bounded from above by a negative power of the distance from a fixed pole (times a negative constant), then all the $ L^p $ inequalities that interpolate between Poincaré and Sobolev hold for radial functions provided the power lies in the interval $ (-2,0) $. The Poincaré inequality was established by H.P. McKean under a constant negative bound from above on the sectional curvatures. If the power is equal to the critical value $ -2 $ we show that $ p $ must necessarily be bounded away from $ 2 $. Upon assuming that the Ricci curvature vanishes at infinity, the nonradial version of such inequalities turns out to fail, except in the Sobolev case. Finally, we discuss applications of the here-established Sobolev-type inequalities to optimal smoothing effects for radial porous medium equations.

Uniqueness of very weak solutions for a fractional filtration equation

We prove existence and uniqueness of distributional, bounded, nonnegative solutions to a fractional filtration equation in ${\mathbb R}^d$. With regards to uniqueness, it was shown even for more general equations in [19] that if two bounded solutions $u,w$ of (1.1) satisfy $u-w\in L^1({\mathbb R}^d\times(0,T))$, then $u=w$. We obtain here that this extra assumption can in fact be removed and establish uniqueness in the class of merely bounded solutions, provided they are nonnegative. Indeed, we show that a minimal solution exists and that any other solution must coincide with it. As a consequence, distributional solutions have locally-finite energy.

Symmetry for extremal functions in subcritical Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequalities

We use the formalism of the R{é}nyi entropies to establish the symmetry range of extremal functions in a family of subcriti-cal Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequalities. By extremal functions we mean functions which realize the equality case in the inequalities, written with optimal constants. The method extends recent results on critical Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequalities. Using heuristics given by a nonlinear diffusion equation, we give a variational proof of a symmetry result, by establishing a rigidity theorem: in the symmetry region, all positive critical points have radial symmetry and are therefore equal to the unique positive, radial critical point, up to scalings and multiplications. This result is sharp. The condition on the parameters is indeed complementary of the condition which determines the region in which symmetry breaking holds as a consequence of the linear instability of radial optimal functions. Compared to the critical case, the subcritical range requires new tools. The Fisher information has to be replaced by R{é}nyi entropy powers, and since some invariances are lost, the estimates based on the Emden-Fowler transformation have to be modified.

The fractional Laplacian in power-weighted $L^p$ spaces: integration-by-parts formulas and self-adjointness

We consider the fractional Laplacian operator $(-Δ)^s$ (let $ s \in (0,1) $) on Euclidean space and investigate the validity of the classical integration-by-parts formula that connects the $ L^2(\mathbb{R}^d) $ scalar product between a function and its fractional Laplacian to the nonlocal norm of the fractional Sobolev space $ \dot{H}^s(\mathbb{R}^d) $. More precisely, we focus on functions belonging to some weighted $ L^2 $ space whose fractional Laplacian belongs to another weighted $ L^2 $ space: we prove and disprove the validity of the integration-by-parts formula depending on the behaviour of the weight $ ρ(x) $ at infinity. The latter is assumed to be like a power both near the origin and at infinity (the two powers being possibly different). Our results have direct consequences for the self-adjointness of the linear operator formally given by $ ρ^{-1}(-Δ)^s $. The generality of the techniques developed allows us to deal with weighted $ L^p $ spaces as well.

The porous medium equation on Riemannian manifolds with negative curvature. The large-time behaviour

We consider nonnegative solutions of the porous medium equation (PME) on a Cartan-Hadamard manifold whose negative curvature can be unbounded. We take compactly supported initial data because we are also interested in free boundaries. We classify the geometrical cases we study into quasi-hyperbolic, quasi-Euclidean and critical cases, depending on the growth rate of the curvature at infinity. We prove sharp upper and lower bounds on the long-time behaviour of the solutions in terms of corresponding bounds on the curvature. In particular we obtain a sharp form of the smoothing effect on such manifolds. We also estimate the location of the free boundary. A global Harnack principle follows. We also present a change of variables that allows to transform radially symmetric solutions of the PME on model manifolds into radially symmetric solutions of a corresponding weighted PME on Euclidean space and back. This equivalence turns out to be an important tool of the theory.

The porous medium equation with measure data on negatively curved Riemannian manifolds

We investigate existence and uniqueness of weak solutions of the Cauchy problem for the porous medium equation on negatively curved Riemannian manifolds. We show existence of solutions taking as initial condition a finite Radon measure, not necessarily positive. We then establish uniqueness in the class of nonnegative solutions. On the other hand, we prove that any weak solution of the porous medium equation necessarily takes on as initial datum a finite Radon measure. In addition, we obtain some results in potential analysis on manifolds, concerning the validity of a modified version of the mean-value inequality for superharmonic functions, and properties of potentials of positive Radon measures. Such results are new and of independent interest, and are crucial for our approach.

Weighted fast diffusion equations (Part I): Sharp asymptotic rates without symmetry and symmetry breaking in Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequalities

In this paper we consider a family of Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg interpolation inequalities (CKN), with two radial power law weights and exponents in a subcritical range. We address the question of symmetry breaking: are the optimal functions radially symmetric, or not ? Our intuition comes from a weighted fast diffusion (WFD) flow: if symmetry holds, then an explicit entropy - entropy production inequality which governs the intermediate asymptotics is indeed equivalent to (CKN), and the self-similar profiles are optimal for (CKN). We establish an explicit symmetry breaking condition by proving the linear instability of the radial optimal functions for (CKN). Symmetry breaking in (CKN) also has consequences on entropy - entropy production inequalities and on the intermediate asymptotics for (WFD). Even when no symmetry holds in (CKN), asymptotic rates of convergence of the solutions to (WFD) are determined by a weighted Hardy-Poincar{é} inequality which is interpreted as a linearized entropy - entropy production inequality. All our results rely on the study of the bottom of the spectrum of the linearized diffusion operator around the self-similar profiles, which is equivalent to the linearization of (CKN) around the radial optimal functions, and on variational methods. Consequences for the (WFD) flow will be studied in Part II of this work.

Weighted fast diffusion equations (Part II): Sharp asymptotic rates of convergence in relative error by entropy methods

This paper is the second part of the study. In Part~I, self-similar solutions of a weighted fast diffusion equation (WFD) were related to optimal functions in a family of subcritical Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequalities (CKN) applied to radially symmetric functions. For these inequalities, the linear instability (symmetry breaking) of the optimal radial solutions relies on the spectral properties of the linearized evolution operator. Symmetry breaking in (CKN) was also related to large-time asymptotics of (WFD), at formal level. A first purpose of Part~II is to give a rigorous justification of this point, that is, to determine the asymptotic rates of convergence of the solutions to (WFD) in the symmetry range of (CKN) as well as in the symmetry breaking range, and even in regimes beyond the supercritical exponent in (CKN). Global rates of convergence with respect to a free energy (or entropy) functional are also investigated, as well as uniform convergence to self-similar solutions in the strong sense of the relative error. Differences with large-time asymptotics of fast diffusion equations without weights will be emphasized.

Weighted interpolation inequalities: a perturbation approach

We study optimal functions in a family of Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequalities with a power-law weight, in a regime for which standard symmetrization techniques fail. We establish the existence of optimal functions, study their properties and prove that they are radial when the power in the weight is small enough. Radial symmetry up to translations is true for the limiting case where the weight vanishes, a case which corresponds to a well-known subfamily of Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities. Our approach is based on a concentration-compactness analysis and on a perturbation method which uses a spectral gap inequality. As a consequence, we prove that optimal functions are explicit and given by Barenblatt-type profiles in the perturbative regime.

Fractional porous media equations: existence and uniqueness of weak solutions with measure data

We prove existence and uniqueness of solutions to a class of porous media equations driven by the fractional Laplacian when the initial data are positive finite Radon measures on the Euclidean space. For given solutions without a prescribed initial condition, the problem of existence and uniqueness of the initial trace is also addressed. By the same methods we can also treat weighted fractional porous media equations, with a weight that can be singular at the origin, and must have a sufficiently slow decay at infinity (power-like). In particular, we show that the Barenblatt-type solutions exist and are unique. Such a result has a crucial role in [24], where the asymptotic behavior of solutions is investigated. Our uniqueness result solves a problem left open, even in the non-weighted case, in [42]

Smoothing effects for the porous medium equation on Cartan-Hadamard manifolds

We prove three sharp bounds for solutions to the porous medium equation posed on Riemannian manifolds, or for weighted versions of such equation. Firstly we prove a smoothing effect for solutions which is valid on any Cartan-Hadamard manifold whose sectional curvatures are bounded above by a strictly negative constant. This bound includes as a special case the sharp smoothing effect recently proved by Vázquez on the hyperbolic space in \cite{V}, which is similar to the absolute bound valid in the case of bounded Euclidean domains but has a logarithmic correction. Secondly we prove a bound which interpolates between such smoothing effect and the Euclidean one, supposing a suitable quantitative Sobolev inequality holds, showing that it is sharp by means of explicit examples. Finally, assuming a stronger functional inequality of sub-Poincaré type, we prove that the above mentioned (sharp) absolute bound holds, and provide examples of weighted porous media equations on manifolds of infinite volume in which it holds, in contrast with the non-weighted Euclidean situation. It is also shown that sub-Poincaré inequalities cannot hold on Cartan-Hadamard manifolds.

On the asymptotic behaviour of solutions to the fractional porous medium equation with variable density

We are concerned with the long time behaviour of solutions to the fractional porous medium equation with a variable spatial density. We prove that if the density decays slowly at infinity, then the solution approaches the Barenblatt-type solution of a proper singular fractional problem. If, on the contrary, the density decays rapidly at infinity, we show that the minimal solution multiplied by a suitable power of the time variable converges to the minimal solution of a certain fractional sublinear elliptic equation.

Porous media equations with two weights: smoothing and decay properties of energy solutions via Poincaré inequalities

We study weighted porous media equations on domains $Ω\subseteq{\mathbb R}^N$, either with Dirichlet or with Neumann homogeneous boundary conditions when $Ω\not={\mathbb R}^N$. Existence of weak solutions and uniqueness in a suitable class is studied in detail. Moreover, $L^{q_0}$-$L^\varrho$ smoothing effects ($1\leq q_0<\varrho<\infty$) are discussed for short time, in connection with the validity of a Poincaré inequality in appropriate weighted Sobolev spaces, and the long-time asymptotic behaviour is also studied. Particular emphasis is given to the Neumann problem, which is much less studied in the literature, as well as to the case $Ω={\mathbb R}^N$ when the corresponding weight makes its measure finite, so that solutions converge to their weighted average instead than to zero. Examples are given in terms of wide classes of weights.

Sharp short and long time $\mathbf L^{\boldsymbol \infty}$ bounds for solutions to porous media equations with Neumann boundary conditions

We study a class of nonlinear diffusion equations whose model is the classical porous media equation on domains $Ω\subseteq{\mathbb R}^N$, $N\ge3$, with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. Firstly we improve some known results in such model case, both as concerns sharp $L^{q_0}$-$L^\infty$ regularizing properties of the evolution for short time and as concerns sharp long time asymptotics in the sense of $L^\infty$ convergence of solutions to their mean value. The generality of the discussion allows to consider, almost at the same time, also weighted versions of the above equation provided an appropriate weighted Sobolev inequality is required to hold. \normalcolor In fact, we show that the validity of a slightly weaker functional inequality is equivalent to the validity of a suitable $L^{q_0}$-$L^\infty$ bound for solutions to the associated weighted porous media equation. The long time asymptotic analysis relies as well on the assumed weighted Sobolev inequality only, and allows to prove uniform convergence to the mean value, with the rate predicted by linearization, in such generality. This fact was not known even for the explicit classes of weights previously considered in the literature.
