Blow-up for semilinear parabolic equations in cones of the hyperbolic space

We investigate existence and nonexistence of global in time nonnegative solutions to the semilinear heat equation, with a reaction term of the type $e^{μt}u^p$ ($μ\in\mathbb{R}, p>1$), posed on cones of the hyperbolic space. Under a certain assumption on $μ$ and $p$, related to the bottom of the spectrum of $-Δ$ in $\mathbb H^n$, we prove that any solution blows up in finite time, for any nontrivial nonnegative initial datum. Instead, if the parameters $μ$ and $p$ satisfy the opposite condition we have: (a) blow-up when the initial datum is large enough, (b) existence of global solutions when the initial datum is small enough. Hence our conditions on the parameters $μ$ and $p$ are optimal. We see that blow-up and global existence do not depend on the amplitude of the cone. This is very different from what happens in the Euclidean setting, and it is essentially due to a specific geometric feature of $\mathbb H^n$.

The porous medium equation with large data on Cartan-Hadamard manifolds under general curvature bounds

We consider very weak solutions of the Cauchy problem for the porous medium equation on Cartan-Hadamard manifolds, that are assumed to satisfy general curvature bounds and to be stochastically complete. We identify a class of initial data that can grow at infinity at a prescribed rate, which depends on the assumed curvature bounds through an integral function, such that the corresponding solution exists at least on $[0,T]$ for a suitable $T>0$. The maximal existence time $T$ is estimated in terms of a suitable weighted norm of the initial datum. Our results are sharp, in the sense that slower growth rates yield global existence, whereas one can construct data with critical growth for which the corresponding solutions blow up in finite time. Under further assumptions, uniqueness of very weak solutions is also proved, in the same growth class.

Smoothing effects and infinite time blowup for reaction-diffusion equations: an approach via Sobolev and Poincaré inequalities

We consider reaction-diffusion equations either posed on Riemannian manifolds or in the Euclidean weighted setting, with pow\-er-type nonlinearity and slow diffusion of porous medium time. We consider the particularly delicate case $p<m$ in problem (1.1), a case largely left open in [21] even when the initial datum is smooth and compactly supported. We prove global existence for L$^m$ data, and a smoothing effect for the evolution, i.e. that solutions corresponding to such data are bounded at all positive times with a quantitative bound on their L$^\infty$ norm. As a consequence of this fact and of a result of [21], it follows that on Cartan-Hadamard manifolds with curvature pinched between two strictly negative constants, solutions corresponding to sufficiently large L$^m$ data give rise to solutions that blow up pointwise everywhere in infinite time, a fact that has no Euclidean analogue. The methods of proof of the smoothing effect are functional analytic in character, as they depend solely on the validity of the Sobolev inequality and on the fact that the L$^2$ spectrum of $Δ$ on $M$ is bounded away from zero (namely on the validity of a Poincaré inequality on $M$). As such, they are applicable to different situations, among which we single out the case of (mass) weighted reaction-diffusion equation in the Euclidean setting. In this latter setting, a modification of the methods of [37] allows to deal also, with stronger results for large times, with the case of globally integrable weights.

Blow-up and global existence for solutions to the porous medium equation with reaction and fast decaying density

We are concerned with nonnegative solutions to the Cauchy problem for the porous medium equation with a variable density $ρ(x)$ and a power-like reaction term $u^p$ with $p>1$. The density decays {\it fast} at infinity, in the sense that $ρ(x)\sim |x|^{-q}$ as $|x|\to +\infty$ with $q\ge 2.$ In the case when $q=2$, if $p$ is bigger than $m$, we show that, for large enough initial data, solutions blow-up in finite time and for small initial datum, solutions globally exist. On the other hand, in the case when $q>2$, we show that existence of global in time solutions always prevails. The case of {\it slowly} decaying density at infinity, i.e. $q\in [0,2)$, is examined in [41].

Blow-up and global existence for solutions to the porous medium equation with reaction and slowly decaying density

We study existence of global solutions and finite time blow-up of solutions to the Cauchy problem for the porous medium equation with a variable density $ρ(x)$ and a power-like reaction term $ρ(x) u^p$ with $p>1$; this is a mathematical model of a thermal evolution of a heated plasma (see [25]). The density decays slowly at infinity, in the sense that $ρ(x)\lesssim |x|^{-q}$ as $|x|\to +\infty$ with $q\in [0, 2).$ We show that for large enough initial data, solutions blow-up in finite time for any $p>1$. On the other hand, if the initial datum is small enough and $p>\bar p$, for a suitable $\bar p$ depending on $ρ, m, N$, then global solutions exist. In addition, if $p<\underline p$, for a suitable $\underline p\leq \bar p$ depending on $ρ, m, N$, then the solution blows-up in finite time for any nontrivial initial datum; we need the extra hypotehsis that $q\in [0, ε)$ for $ε>0$ small enough, when $m\leq p<\underline p$. Observe that $\underline p=\bar p$, if $ρ(x)$ is a multiple of $|x|^{-q}$ for $|x|$ large enough. Such results are in agreement with those established in [41], where $ρ(x)\equiv 1$. The case of fast decaying density at infinity, i.e. $q\geq 2$, is examined in [31].

Blow-up and global existence for the inhomogeneous porous medium equation with reaction

We study finite time blow-up and global existence of solutions to the Cauchy problem for the porous medium equation with a variable density $ρ(x)$ and a power-like reaction term. We show that for small enough initial data, if $ρ(x)\sim \frac{1}{\left(\log|x|\right)^α|x|^{2}}$ as $|x|\to \infty$, then solutions globally exist for any $p>1$. On the other hand, when $ρ(x)\sim\frac{\left(\log|x|\right)^α}{|x|^{2}}$ as $|x|\to \infty$, if the initial datum is small enough then one has global existence of the solution for any $p>m$, while if the initial datum is large enough then the blow-up of the solutions occurs for any $p>m$. Such results generalize those established in [27] and [28], where it is supposed that $ρ(x)\sim |x|^{-q}$ for $q>0$ as $|x|\to \infty$.

Fast diffusion on noncompact manifolds: well-posedness theory and connections with semilinear elliptic equations

We investigate the well-posedness of the fast diffusion equation (FDE) in a wide class of noncompact Riemannian manifolds. Existence and uniqueness of solutions for globally integrable initial data was established in [5]. However, in the Euclidean space, it is known from Herrero and Pierre [20] that the Cauchy problem associated with the FDE is well posed for initial data that are merely in $ L^1_{\mathrm{loc}} $. We establish here that such data still give rise to global solutions on general Riemannian manifolds. If, in addition, the radial Ricci curvature satisfies a suitable pointwise bound from below (possibly diverging to $-\infty$ at spatial infinity), we prove that also uniqueness holds, for the same type of data, in the class of strong solutions. Besides, under the further assumption that the initial datum is in $L^2_{\mathrm{loc}}$ and nonnegative, a minimal solution is shown to exist, and we are able to establish uniqueness of purely (nonnegative) distributional solutions, which to our knowledge was not known before even in the Euclidean space. The required curvature bound is in fact sharp, since on model manifolds it turns out to be equivalent to stochastic completeness, and it was shown in [13] that uniqueness for the FDE fails even in the class of bounded solutions on manifolds that are not stochastically complete. Qualitatively this amounts to asking that the curvature diverges at most quadratically at infinity. A crucial ingredient of the uniqueness result is the proof of nonexistence of distributional subsolutions to certain semilinear elliptic equations with power nonlinearities, of independent interest.

Uniqueness of very weak solutions for a fractional filtration equation

We prove existence and uniqueness of distributional, bounded, nonnegative solutions to a fractional filtration equation in ${\mathbb R}^d$. With regards to uniqueness, it was shown even for more general equations in [19] that if two bounded solutions $u,w$ of (1.1) satisfy $u-w\in L^1({\mathbb R}^d\times(0,T))$, then $u=w$. We obtain here that this extra assumption can in fact be removed and establish uniqueness in the class of merely bounded solutions, provided they are nonnegative. Indeed, we show that a minimal solution exists and that any other solution must coincide with it. As a consequence, distributional solutions have locally-finite energy.

The porous medium equation with measure data on negatively curved Riemannian manifolds

We investigate existence and uniqueness of weak solutions of the Cauchy problem for the porous medium equation on negatively curved Riemannian manifolds. We show existence of solutions taking as initial condition a finite Radon measure, not necessarily positive. We then establish uniqueness in the class of nonnegative solutions. On the other hand, we prove that any weak solution of the porous medium equation necessarily takes on as initial datum a finite Radon measure. In addition, we obtain some results in potential analysis on manifolds, concerning the validity of a modified version of the mean-value inequality for superharmonic functions, and properties of potentials of positive Radon measures. Such results are new and of independent interest, and are crucial for our approach.

Elliptic and parabolic equations with Dirichlet conditions at infinity on Riemannian manifolds

We investigate existence and uniqueness of bounded solutions of parabolic equations with unbounded coefficients in $M\times \mathbb R_+$, where $M$ is a complete noncompact Riemannian manifold. Under specific assumptions, we establish existence of solutions satisfying prescribed conditions at infinity, depending on the direction along which infinity is approached. Moreover, the large-time behavior of such solutions is studied. We consider also elliptic equations on $M$ with similar conditions at infinity.

Fractional porous media equations: existence and uniqueness of weak solutions with measure data

We prove existence and uniqueness of solutions to a class of porous media equations driven by the fractional Laplacian when the initial data are positive finite Radon measures on the Euclidean space. For given solutions without a prescribed initial condition, the problem of existence and uniqueness of the initial trace is also addressed. By the same methods we can also treat weighted fractional porous media equations, with a weight that can be singular at the origin, and must have a sufficiently slow decay at infinity (power-like). In particular, we show that the Barenblatt-type solutions exist and are unique. Such a result has a crucial role in [24], where the asymptotic behavior of solutions is investigated. Our uniqueness result solves a problem left open, even in the non-weighted case, in [42]

On the stability of solutions of semilinear elliptic equations with Robin boundary conditions on Riemannian manifolds

We investigate existence and nonexistence of stationary stable nonconstant solutions, i.e. patterns, of semilinear parabolic problems in bounded domains of Riemannian manifolds satisfying Robin boundary conditions. These problems arise in several models in applications, in particular in Mathematical Biology. We point out the role both of the nonlinearity and of geometric objects such as the Ricci curvature of the manifold, the second fundamental form of the boundary of the domain and its mean curvature. Special attention is devoted to surfaces of revolution and to spherically symmetric manifolds, where we prove refined results.

Prescribed conditions at infinity for fractional parabolic and elliptic equations with unbounded coefficients

We investigate existence and uniqueness of solutions to a class of fractional parabolic equations satisfying prescribed pointwise conditions at infinity (in space), which can be time- dependent. Moreover, we study the asymptotic behaviour of such solutions. We also consider solutions of elliptic equations satisfying appropriate conditions at infinity.

On the asymptotic behaviour of solutions to the fractional porous medium equation with variable density

We are concerned with the long time behaviour of solutions to the fractional porous medium equation with a variable spatial density. We prove that if the density decays slowly at infinity, then the solution approaches the Barenblatt-type solution of a proper singular fractional problem. If, on the contrary, the density decays rapidly at infinity, we show that the minimal solution multiplied by a suitable power of the time variable converges to the minimal solution of a certain fractional sublinear elliptic equation.

Allen-Cahn Approximation of Mean Curvature Flow in Riemannian manifolds I, uniform estimates

We are concerned with solutions to the parabolic Allen-Cahn equation in Riemannian manifolds. For a general class of initial condition we show non positivity of the limiting energy discrepancy. This in turn allows to prove almost monotonicity formula (a weak counterpart of Huisken's monotonicity formula) which gives a local uniform control of the energy densities at small scales. Such results will be used in [40] to extend previous important results from [31] in Euclidean space, showing convergence of solutions to the parabolic Allen-Cahn equations to Brakke's motion by mean curvature in space forms.

Allen-Cahn Approximation of Mean Curvature Flow in Riemannian manifolds II, Brakke's flows

We prove convergence of solutions to the parabolic Allen-Cahn equation to Brakke's motion by mean curvature in space forms, generalizing previous results from [15] in Euclidean space. We show that a sequence of measures, associated to energy density of solutions of the parabolic Allen-Cahn equation, converges in the limit to a family of rectifiable Radon measures, which evolves by mean curvature flow in the sense of Brakke. A key role is played by a local almost monotonicity formula (a weak counterpart of Huisken's monotonicity formula) proved in [22], to get various density bounds for the limiting measures.

On a fractional sublinear elliptic equation with a variable coefficient

We study existence and uniqueness of bounded solutions to a fractional sublinear elliptic equation with a variable coefficient, in the whole space. Existence is investigated in connection to a certain fractional linear equation, whereas the proof of uniqueness relies on uniqueness of solutions to an associated fractional porous medium equation with variable density.
