$K_2$ and quantum curves

A 2015 conjecture of Codesido-Grassi-Mariño in topological string theory relates the enumerative invariants of toric CY 3-folds to the spectra of operators attached to their mirror curves. We deduce two consequences of this conjecture for the integral regulators of $K_2$-classes on these curves, and then prove both of them; the results thus give evidence for the CGM conjecture. (While the conjecture and the deduction process both entail forms of local mirror symmetry, the consequences/theorems do not: they only involve the curves themselves.) Our first theorem relates zeroes of the higher normal function to the spectra of the operators for curves of genus one, and suggests a new link between analysis and arithmetic geometry. The second theorem provides dilogarithm formulas for limits of regulator periods at the maximal conifold point in moduli of the curves.

Geometric interpretation of toroidal compactifications of moduli of points in the line and cubic surfaces

It is known that some GIT compactifications associated to moduli spaces of either points in the projective line or cubic surfaces are isomorphic to Baily-Borel compactifications of appropriate ball quotients. In this paper, we show that their respective toroidal compactifications are isomorphic to moduli spaces of stable pairs as defined in the context of the MMP. Moreover, we give a precise mixed-Hodge-theoretic interpretation of this isomorphism for the case of eight labeled points in the projective line.

Unipotent extensions and differential equations (after Bloch-Vlasenko)

S. Bloch and M. Vlasenko recently introduced a theory of \emph{motivic Gamma functions}, given by periods of the Mellin transform of a geometric variation of Hodge structure, which they tie to the monodromy and asymptotic behavior of certain unipotent extensions of the variation. Here we further examine these Gamma functions and the related \emph{Apéry and Frobenius invariants} of a VHS, and establish a relationship to motivic cohomology and solutions to inhomogeneous Picard-Fuchs equations.

Variations of Hodge structure and orbits in flag varieties

Period domains, the classifying spaces for (pure, polarized) Hodge structures, and more generally Mumford-Tate domains, arise as open $G_{\mathbb{R}}$--orbits in flag varieties $G/P$. We investigate Hodge--theoretic aspects of the geometry and representation theory associated with these flag varieties. In particular, we relate the Griffiths--Yukawa coupling to the variety of lines on $G/P$ (under a minimal homogeneous embedding), construct a large class of polarized $G_{\mathbb{R}}$--orbits in $G/P$, and compute the associated Hodge--theoretic boundary components. An emphasis is placed throughout on adjoint flag varieties and the corresponding families of Hodge structures of levels two and four.

A Feynman integral via higher normal functions

We study the Feynman integral for the three-banana graph defined as the scalar two-point self-energy at three-loop order. The Feynman integral is evaluated for all identical internal masses in two space-time dimensions. Two calculations are given for the Feynman integral; one based on an interpretation of the integral as an inhomogeneous solution of a classical Picard-Fuchs differential equation, and the other using arithmetic algebraic geometry, motivic cohomology, and Eisenstein series. Both methods use the rather special fact that the Feynman integral is a family of regulator periods associated to a family of K3 surfaces. We show that the integral is given by a sum of elliptic trilogarithms evaluated at sixth roots of unity. This elliptic trilogarithm value is related to the regulator of a class in the motivic cohomology of the K3 family. We prove a conjecture by David Broadhurst that at a special kinematical point the Feynman integral is given by a critical value of the Hasse-Weil L-function of the K3 surface. This result is shown to be a particular case of Deligne's conjectures relating values of L-functions inside the critical strip to periods.

Arithmetic of degenerating principal variations of Hodge structure: examples arising from mirror symmetry and middle convolution

We collect evidence in support of a conjecture of Griffiths, Green and Kerr on the arithmetic of extension classes of limiting mixed Hodge structures arising from semistable degenerations over a number field. After briefly summarizing how a result of Iritani implies this conjecture for a collection of hypergeometric Calabi-Yau threefold examples studied by Doran and Morgan, the authors investigate a sequence of (non-hypergeometric) examples in dimensions 1 through 6 arising from Katz's theory of the middle convolution. A crucial role is played by the Mumford-Tate group (of type G2) of the family of 6-folds, and the theory of boundary components of Mumford-Tate domains.

Algebraic cycles and local quantum cohomology

We review the Hodge theory of some classic examples from mirror symmetry, with an emphasis on what is intrinsic to the A-model, and on interesting open questions and problems. In particular, we illustrate the construction of a quantum Z-local system on the cohomology of the total space of the canonical bundle of P^2, and suggest how this should be related to the higher algebraic cycles studied in our 2011 CNTP article "Algebraic K-theory of toric hypersurfaces".

On the isomorphism question for complete Pick multiplier algebras

Every multiplier algebra of an irreducible complete Pick kernel arises as the restriction algebra $\mv = \{f\big|_V : f \in \cM_d\}$, where $d$ is some integer or $\infty$, $\cM_d$ is the multiplier algebra of the Drury-Arveson space $H^2_d$, and $V$ is a subvariety of the unit ball. For finite $d$ it is known that, under mild assumptions, every isomorphism between two such algebras $\mv$ and $\mw$ is induced by a biholomorphism between $W$ and $V$. In this paper we consider the converse, and obtain positive results in two directions. The first deals with the case where $V$ is the proper image of a finite Riemann surface. The second deals with the case where $V$ is a disjoint union of varieties.

Normal functions, Picard-Fuchs equations, and elliptic fibrations on K3 surfaces

Using Gauss-Manin derivatives of normal functions, we arrive at some remarkable results on the non-triviality of the transcendental regulator for $K_m$ of a very general projective algebraic manifold. Our strongest results are for the transcendental regulator for $K_1$ of a very general $K3$ surface. We also construct an explicit family of $K_1$ cycles on $H \oplus E_8 \oplus E_8$-polarized $K3$ surfaces, and show they are indecomposable by a direct evaluation of the real regulator. Critical use is made of natural elliptic fibrations, hypersurface normal forms, and an explicit parametrization by modular functions.
