An adjunction inequality for the Bauer-Furuta type invariants, with applications to sliceness and 4-manifold topology

Our main result gives an adjunction inequality for embedded surfaces in certain $4$-manifolds with contact boundary under a non-vanishing assumption on the Bauer--Furuta type invariants. Using this, we give infinitely many knots in $S^3$ that are not smoothly H-slice (that is, bounding a null-homologous disk) in many $4$-manifolds but they are topologically H-slice. In particular, we give such knots in the boundaries of the punctured elliptic surfaces $E(2n)$. In addition, we give obstructions to codimension-0 orientation-reversing embedding of weak symplectic fillings with $b_3=0$ into closed symplectic 4-manifolds with $b_1=0$ and $b_2^+\equiv 3$ mod $4$. From here we prove a Bennequin type inequality for symplectic caps of $(S^3,ξ_{std})$. We also show that any weakly symplectically fillable $3$-manifold bounds a $4$-manifold with at least two smooth structures.

Seifert hypersurfaces of 2-knots and Chern-Simons functional

For a given smooth $2$-knot in $S^4$, we relate the existence of a smooth Seifert hypersurface of a certain class to the existence of irreducible $ SU(2)$-representations of its knot group. For example, we see that any smooth $2$-knot having the Poincaré homology $3$-sphere as a Seifert hypersurface has at least four irreducible $SU(2)$-representations of its knot group. This result is false in the topological category. The proof uses a quantitative formulation of instanton Floer homology. Using similar techniques, we also obtain similar results about codimension-$1$ embeddings of homology $3$-spheres into closed definite $4$-manifolds and a fixed point type theorem for instanton Floer homology.

Involutions, knots, and Floer K-theory

We establish a version of Seiberg--Witten Floer $K$-theory for knots, as well as a version of Seiberg-Witten Floer $K$-theory for 3-manifolds with involution. The main theorems are 10/8-type inequalities for knots and for involutions. The 10/8-inequality for knots yields numerous applications to knots, such as lower bounds on stabilizing numbers and relative genera. We also give obstructions to extending involutions on 3-manifolds to 4-manifolds, and detect non-smoothable involutions on 4-manifolds with boundary.

The groups of diffeomorphisms and homeomorphisms of 4-manifolds with boundary

We give constraints on smooth families of 4-manifolds with boundary using Manolescu's Seiberg-Witten Floer stable homotopy type, provided that the fiberwise restrictions of the families to the boundaries are trivial families of 3-manifolds. As an application, we show that, for a simply-connected oriented compact smooth 4-manifold $X$ with boundary with an assumption on the Frøyshov invariant or the Manolescu invariants $α, β, γ$ of $\partial X$, the inclusion map $\mathrm{Diff}(X,\partial) \hookrightarrow \mathrm{Homeo}(X,\partial)$ between the groups of diffeomorphisms and homeomorphisms which fix the boundary pointwise is not a weak homotopy equivalence. This combined with a classical result in dimension 3 implies that the inclusion map $\mathrm{Diff}(X) \hookrightarrow \mathrm{Homeo}(X)$ is also not a weak homotopy equivalence under the same assumption on $\partial X$. Our constraints generalize both of constraints on smooth families of closed 4-manifolds proven by Baraglia and a Donaldson-type theorem for smooth 4-manifolds with boundary originally due to Frøyshov.

Rational homology 3-spheres and simply connected definite bounding

For each rational homology 3-sphere $Y$ which bounds simply connected definite 4-manifolds of both signs, we construct an infinite family of irreducible rational homology 3-spheres which are homology cobordant to $Y$ but cannot bound any simply connected definite 4-manifold. As a corollary, for any coprime integers $p,q$, we obtain an infinite family of irreducible rational homology 3-spheres which are homology cobordant to the lens space $L(p,q)$ but cannot obtained by a knot surgery.

Instantons for 4-manifolds with periodic ends and an obstruction to embeddings of 3-manifolds

We construct an obstruction for the existence of embeddings of homology $3$-sphere into homology $S^3\times S^1$ under some cohomological condition. The obstruction is defined as an element in the filtered version of the instanton Floer cohomology due to R.Fintushel-R.Stern. We make use of the $\mathbb{Z}$-fold covering space of homology $S^3\times S^1$ and the instantons on it.

Observation of a Hidden Hole-Like Band Approaching the Fermi Level in K-Doped Iron Selenide Superconductor

One of the ultimate goals of the study of iron-based superconductors is to identify the common feature that produces the high critical temperature (Tc). In the early days, based on a weak-coupling viewpoint, the nesting between hole- and electron-like Fermi surfaces (FSs) leading to the so-called $s\pm$ state was considered to be one such key feature. However, this theory has faced a serious challenge ever since the discovery of alkali-metal-doped FeSe (AFS) superconductors, in which only electron-like FSs with a nodeless superconducting gap are observed. Several theories have been proposed, but a consistent understanding is yet to be achieved. Here we show experimentally that a hole-like band exists in KxFe2-ySe2, which presumably forms a hole-like Fermi surface. The present study suggests that AFS can be categorized in the same group as iron arsenides with both hole- and electron-like FSs present. This result provides a foundation for a comprehensive understanding of the superconductivity in iron-based superconductors.

Ultrafast electron dynamics at the Dirac node of the topological insulator Sb$_2$Te$_3$

Topological insulators (TIs) are a new quantum state of matter. Their surfaces and interfaces act as a topological boundary to generate massless Dirac fermions with spin-helical textures. Investigation of fermion dynamics near the Dirac point is crucial for the future development of spintronic devices incorporating topological insulators. However, research so far has been unsatisfactory because of a substantial overlap with the bulk valence band and a lack of a completely unoccupied Dirac point (DP). Here, we explore the surface Dirac fermion dynamics in the TI Sb$_2$Te$_3$ by time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (TrARPES). Sb$_2$Te$_3$ has a DP located completely above the Fermi energy ($E_F$) with an in-gap DP. The excited electrons in the upper Dirac cone stay longer than those below the Dirac point to form an inverted population. This was attributed to a reduced density of states (DOS) near the DP .

Realization of bulk insulating property and carrier manipulation in reversible spin current regime of the ideal topological insulator TlBiSe2

The surfaces of three-dimensional topological insulators (TIs) characterized by a spin-helical Dirac fermion provide a fertile ground for realizing exotic phenomena as well as having potential for wide-ranging applications. To realize most of their special properties, the Dirac point (DP) is required to be located near the Fermi energy with a bulk insulating property while it is hardly achieved in most of the discovered TIs. It has been recently found that TlBiSe2 features an in-gap DP, where upper and lower parts of surface Dirac cone are both utilized. Nevertheless, investigations of the surface transport properties of this material are limited due to the lack of bulk insulating characteristics. Here, we present the first realization of bulk insulating property by tuning the composition of Tl1-xBi1+xSe2-d without introducing guest atoms that can bring the novel properties into the reality. This result promises to shed light on new exotic topological phenomena on the surface.

Experimental verification of the surface termination in the topological insulator TlBiSe$_{2}$ using core-level photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy

The surface termination of the promising topological insulator TlBiSe$_{2}$ has been studied by surface and bulk sensitive probes. Our scanning tunneling microscopy has unmasked for the first time the unusual surface morphology of TlBiSe$_{2}$ obtained by cleaving, where islands are formed by residual atoms on the cleaved plane. The chemical condition of these islands was identified using core-level spectroscopy. We observed thallium core-level spectra that are strongly deformed by a surface component in sharp contrast to the other elements. We propose a simple explanation for this behavior by assuming that the sample cleaving breaks the bonding between thallium and selenium atoms, leaving the thallium layer partially covering the selenium layer. These findings will assist the interpretation of future experimental and theoretical studies on this surface.

Anomalous momentum dependence of the multiband electronic structure of FeSe_1-xTe_x superconductors induced by atomic disorder

When periodicity of crystal is disturbed by atomic disorder, its electronic state becomes inhomogeneous and band dispersion is obscured. In case of Fe-based superconductors, disorder of chalcogen/pnictogen height causes disorder of Fe 3d level splitting. Here, we report an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study on FeSe_1-xTe_x with the chalcogen height disorder, showing that the disorder affects the Fe 3d band dispersions in an orbital-selective way instead of simple obscuring effect. The reverse of the Fe 3d level splitting due to the chalcogen height difference causes the splitting of the hole band with Fe 3d x^2-y^2 character around the Gamma point.

Chiral orbital-angular-momentum in the surface states of Bi2Se3

Locking of the spin of a quasi-particle to its momentum in split bands of on the surfaces of metals and topological insulators (TIs) is understood in terms of Rashba effect where a free electron in the surface states feels an effective magnetic field. On the other hand, the orbital part of the angular momentum (OAM) is usually neglected. We performed angle resolved photoemission experiments with circularly polarized lights and first principles density functional calculation with spin-orbit coupling on a TI, Bi2Se3, to study the local OAM of the surface states. We show from the results that OAM in the surface states of Bi2Se3 is significant and locked to the electron momentum in opposite direction to the spin, forming chiral OAM states. Our finding opens a new possibility to have strong light-induced spin-polarized current in the surface states.

Electronic structure of BaNi$_2$As$_2$

BaNi$_2$As$_2$, with a first order phase transition around 131 K, is studied by the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The measured electronic structure is compared to the local density approximation calculations, revealing similar large electronlike bands around $\bar{M}$ and differences along $\barΓ$-$\bar{X}$. We further show that the electronic structure of BaNi$_2$As$_2$ is distinct from that of the sibling iron pnictides. Particularly, there is no signature of band folding, indicating no collinear SDW related magnetic ordering. Moreover, across the strong first order phase transition, the band shift exhibits a hysteresis, which is directly related to the significant lattice distortion in BaNi$_2$As$_2$.

Emergence of Orbital Angular Momentum by Inversion Symmetry Breaking and Its Detection by ARPES

Rashba-split surface band is characterized by a one-to-one correspondence between the electron's momentum k and its spin orientation. Here we show that a similar correspondence between momentum and orbital angular momentum (OAM) must exist on surface bands once the inversion symmetry is broken. The correspondence is valid even when there is no spin-orbit interaction. Tight-binding and first-principles calculations are presented to support our claim. As a method to detect such OAM-momentum correspondence, we propose the circular dichroism (CD) experiment using the angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) setup. CD-ARPES experiment performed on Cu surface confirms the existence of chiral OAM. A new concept of "orbital Galvanic effect" is proposed.

Spin and Orbital Angular Momentum Structures of Cu(111) and Au(111) Surface States

We performed angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) studies on Cu(111) and Au(111) surface states with circularly polarized light. Existence of local orbital angular momentum (OAM) is confirmed as has been predicted to be broadly present in a system with an inversion symmetry breaking (ISB). The single band of Cu(111) surface states is found to have chiral OAM in spite of very small spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in Cu, which is consistent with theoretical prediction. As for Au(111), we observe split bands for which OAM for the inner and outer bands are parallel, unlike the Bi2Se3 case. We also performed first principles calculation and the results are found to be consistent with the experimental results. Moreover, majority of OAM is found to be from d-orbitals and a small contribution has p-orbital origin which is anti-aligned to the spins. We derive an effective Hamiltonian that incorporates the role of OAM and used it to extract the OAM and spin structures of surface states with various SOC strength. We discuss the evolution of angular momentum structures from pure OAM case to a strongly spin-orbit entangled state. We predict that the transition occurs through reversal of OAM direction at a k-point in the inner band if the system has a proper SOC strength.

Electronic structure of Fe1.04(Te0.66Se0.34)

We report the electronic structure of the iron-chalcogenide superconductor, Fe1.04(Te0.66Se0.34), obtained with high resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density functional calculations. In photoemission measurements, various photon energies and polarizations are exploited to study the Fermi surface topology and symmetry properties of the bands. The measured band structure and their symmetry characters qualitatively agree with our density function theory calculations of Fe(Te0.66Se0.34), although the band structure is renormalized by about a factor of three. We find that the electronic structures of this iron-chalcogenides and the iron-pnictides have many aspects in common, however, significant differences exist near the Gamma-point. For Fe1.04(Te0.66Se0.34), there are clearly separated three bands with distinct even or odd symmetry that cross the Fermi energy (EF) near the zone center, which contribute to three hole-like Fermi surfaces. Especially, both experiments and calculations show a hole-like elliptical Fermi surface at the zone center. Moreover, no sign of spin density wave was observed in the electronic structure and susceptibility measurements of this compound.

High-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of the electronic structure of EuFe2As2

We report the high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy studies of electronic structure of EuFe2As2. The paramagnetic state data are found to be consistent with density-functional calculations. In the antiferromagnetic ordering state of Fe, our results show that the band splitting, folding, and hybridization evolve with temperature, which cannot be explained by a simple folding picture. Detailed measurements reveal that a tiny electron Fermi pocket and a tiny hole pocket are formed near (pi,pi) in the (0,0)-(pi,pi) direction, which qualitatively agree with the results of quantum oscillations, considering kz variation of Fermi surface. Furthermore, no noticeable change within the energy resolution is observed across the antiferromagnetic transition of Eu2+ ordering, suggesting weak coupling between Eu sublattice and FeAs sublattice.
