Spectrally resolved detection in transient-reflectivity measurements of coherent optical phonons in diamond

Coherent optical phonons in bulk solid system play a crucial role in understanding and designing light-matter interactions and can be detected by the transient-reflectivity measurement. In this paper, we demonstrate spectrally resolved detection of coherent optical phonons in diamond from ultrashort infrared pump-probe measurements using optical band-pass filters. We show that this enhances the sensitivity approximately 35 times in measuring the coherent oscillations in the transient reflectivity compared with the commonly used spectrally integrated measurement. To explain this observation, we discuss its mechanism.

Anharmonic Decay of Coherent Optical Phonons in Antimony

Anharmonic decay of coherent optical phonons in semimetal Sb has been investigated by using a femtosecond pump-probe technique. The coherent $A_{1g}$ mode is observed in time domain in a wide temperature range of 7 - 290 K. The decay rate (the inverse of the dephasing time) systematically increases as the lattice temperature increases, which is well explained by anharmonic phonon-phonon coupling, causing decay of the optical phonon into two acoustic phonon modes. The frequency of the $A_{1g}$ mode decreases with the temperature, which is interpreted to the results of both thermal expansion and anharmonic phonon-phonon coupling. The temperature dependence of the amplitude of the coherent $A_{1g}$ mode exhibits a decrease with the lattice temperature, which is well reproduced by considering the peaked intensity of spontaneous Raman scattering assuming a Lorentzian line shape with the linewidth controlled by the anharmonic decay, and this model can be applicable to other metallic system, like Zn.

Effect of n- and p-type Doping on Coherent Phonons in GaN

Effect of doping on the carrier-phonon interaction in wurtzite GaN is investigated by pump-probe reflectivity measurements using 3.1 eV light in near resonance with the fundamental band gap of 3.39 eV. Coherent modulations of the reflectivity due to the E2 and the A1(LO) modes, as well as the 2A1(LO) overtone are observed. Doping of acceptor and more so for donor atoms enhances the dephasing of the polar A1(LO) phonon via coupling with plasmons, with the effect of donors being stronger. Doping also enhances the relative amplitude of the coherent A1(LO) phonon with respect to that of the high-frequency E2 phonon, though it does not affect the relative intensity in Raman spectroscopic measurements. This enhanced coherent amplitude indicates that transient depletion field screening (TDFS), in addition to impulsive stimulated Raman scattering (ISRS), contribute to generation of the coherent polar phonons even for sub-band gap excitation. Because the TDFS mechanism requires photoexcitation of carriers, we argue that the interband transition is made possible at the surface with photon energies below the bulk band gap through the Franz-Keldysh effect.

The birth of a quasiparticle in Si observed in time-frequency space

The concept of quasiparticles in solid-state physics is an extremely powerful way to describe complex many-body phenomena in terms of single particle excitations. Introducing a simple particle such as electron, e, hole, h, or a phonon, p, deforms a many-body system through interaction with other particles. We say the added particle is dressed or renormalized by a self-energy cloud that describes the response of the many-body system forming a new entity, the quasiparticle. With ultrafast laser techniques we can impulsively generate bare particles and observe their dressing by the many-body interactions, that is quasiparticle formation, on the time and energy scales governed by the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. Here we present the coherent response of Si to excitation with a 10 femtosecond (10-14 s) laser pulse. The optical pulse interacts with the sample via the complex second-order nonlinear susceptibility to generate a force on the lattice driving coherent phonon excitation. Transforming the transient reflectivity signal into frequency-time space by wavelet transform reveals interference effects leading to the coherent phonon generation and subsequent dressing of the phonon by electron-hole, e-h, pair excitations.

Forcibly driven coherent soft phonons in GeTe with intense THz-rate pump fields

We propose an experimental technique to generate large amplitude coherent phonons with irradiation of THz-rate pump pulses and to study the dynamics of phase transition in GeTe ferroelectrics. When a single pump pulse irradiates the sample at various pump power densities, the frequency of the soft phonon decreases sub-linearly and saturates at higher pump powers. By contrast, when THz-rate pump pulse sequence irradiates the sample at matched time intervals to forcibly drive the oscillation, a large red-shift of the phonon frequency is observed without saturation effects. After excitation with a four pump pulse sequence, the coherent soft phonon becomes strongly damped leading to a near critical damping condition. This condition indicates that the lattice is driven to a precursor state of the phase transition.
