Second-Harmonic Generation in Bulk Diamond Based on Inversion Symmetry Breaking by Color Centers

Breaking inversion symmetry in solids plays a central role in nonlinear optics because it can change material properties, such as producing even-order nonlinear optical (NLO) effects. Although a centrosymmetric diamond has been developed as a photonic platform, including waveguides and light sources, the NLO effects in bulk diamonds are limited to the third-order. Thus, exploiting more powerful second-order NLO effects, such as second harmonic generation (SHG), are still challenging. Here we explore symmetry-breaking-induced second-order NLO effects in bulk diamonds using the color center, nitrogen-vacancy center. Exciting with ultrashort laser pulses, SHG and third-harmonic generation (THG) are simultaneously observed at the same time, exhibiting characteristic intensity patterns, depending on both the excitation fluence and the angle of light polarization. We uncovered that SHG serves as the source for THG by the cascading process. Our findings will offer NLO effect-based quantum sensing by diamond color centers, such as imaging of the electromagnetic field by electro-optic effects on the nanofemto scale.

Temperature-dependent second-harmonic generation from color centers in diamond

Under infrared ultrashort pulse laser stimulation, we investigated temperature-dependent second-harmonic generation (SHG) from nitrogen-vacancy (NV)-introduced bulk diamond. The SHG intensity decreases in the temperature range of 20-300 $^{\circ}C$, due to phase mismatching caused by refractive index modification. We discovered that optical phonon scattering outperforms acoustic phonon one in NV diamond by fitting the temperature dependence of SHG intensity using a model based on the bandgap change via the deformation potential interaction. This study presents an efficient and viable way for creating diamond-based nonlinear optical temperature sensing.

Ultrafast dynamics of coherent phonons and phonon-polaritons in lithium niobate crystals

This study investigates the ultrafast dynamics of coherent phonons and phonon-polaritons in lithium niobate (LiNbO$_{3}$) crystals using reflective pump-probe spectroscopy with 25-fs time resolution. In addition to several coherent optical phonon modes, the electro-optic sampling measurements explored the coexistence of phonon-polariton E-modes near 3.8 and 14.9 THz, which agrees considerably with the theoretical phonon-polariton dispersion curves. We also discovered that a time lag ($Δ$t $\approx$ 0.2 ps) between the coherent optical phonon and phonon-polariton originates from the coupling time for propagating phonon-polariton. Our findings provide a possible application of LiNbO$_{3}$ for ultrafast electro-optic phonon modulators with bandwidths greater than 10 THz.

Ultrafast opto-magnetic effects induced by nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond crystals

The current generation of quantum sensing technologies using color centers in diamond crystals is primarily based on the principle that the resonant microwave frequency of the luminescence between quantum levels of the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center varies with temperature, electric and magnetic fields. This principle enables us to measure, for instance, magnetic and electric fields, as well as local temperature with nanometer resolution in conjunction with a scanning probe microscope (SPM). However, the time resolution of conventional quantum sensing technologies has been limited to microseconds due to the limited luminescence lifetime. Here, we investigate ultrafast opto-magnetic effects in diamond crystals containing nitrogen-vacancy NV centers to improve the time resolution of quantum sensing to sub-picosecond time scales. The spin ensemble from diamond NV centers induces an inverse Cotton-Mouton effect (ICME) in the form of a sub-picosecond optical response in a femtosecond pump-probe measurement. The helicity and quadratic power dependence of the ICME can be interpreted as a second-order opto-magnetic effect in which ensembles of NV electron spins act as a source for the ICME. The results provide fundamental guidelines for enabling high-resolution spatial-time quantum sensing technologies when combined with SPM techniques.

Ultrafast scattering dynamics of coherent phonons in Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_{x}$ in the Weyl semimetal phase

We investigate ultrafast phonon dynamics in the Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_{x}$ alloy system for various compositions $x$ using a reflective femtosecond pump-probe technique. The coherent optical phonons corresponding to the A$_{1g}$ local vibrational modes of Bi-Bi, Bi-Sb, and Sb-Sb are generated and observed in the time domain with a few picoseconds dephasing time. The frequencies of the coherent optical phonons were found to change as the Sb composition $x$ was varied, and more importantly, the relaxation time of those phonon modes was dramatically reduced for $x$ values in the range 0.5--0.8. We argue that the phonon relaxation dynamics are not simply governed by alloy scattering, but are significantly modified by anharmonic phonon-phonon scattering with implied minor contributions from electron-phonon scattering in a Weyl-semimetal phase.

Coherent gigahertz phonons in Ge$_{2}$Sb$_{2}$Te$_{5}$ phase-change materials

Using $\approx$40 fs ultrashort laser pulses, we investigate the picosecond acoustic response from a prototypical phase change material, thin Ge$_{2}$Sb$_{2}$Te$_{5}$ (GST) films with various thicknesses. After excitation with a 1.53 eV-energy pulse with a fluence of $\approx$ 5 mJ/cm$^{2}$, the time-resolved reflectivity change exhibits transient electronic response, followed by a combination of exponential-like strain and coherent acoustic phonons in the gigahertz (GHz) frequency range. The time-domain shape of the coherent acoustic pulse is well reproduced by the use of the strain model by Thomsen et al. (Phys. Rev. B 34, 4129, 1986). We found that the decay rate (the inverse of the relaxation time) of the acoustic phonon both in the amorphous and in the crystalline phases decreases as the film thickness increases. The thickness dependence of the acoustic phonon decay is well modeled based on both phonon-defect scattering and acoustic phonon attenuation at the GST/Si interface, and it is revealed that those scattering and attenuation are larger in crystalline GST films than those in amorphous GST films.

Femtosecond structural transformation of phase-change materials far from equilibrium monitored by coherent phonons

Multi-component chalcogenides, such as quasi-binary GeTe-Sb$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ alloys, are widely used in optical data storage media in the form of rewritable optical discs. Ge$_{2}$Sb$_{2}$Te$_{5}$ (GST) in particular has proven to be one of the best-performing materials, whose reliability allows more than 10$^{6}$ write-erase cycles. Despite these industrial applications, the fundamental kinetics of rapid phase-change in GST remain controversial and active debate continues over the ultimate speed limit. Here we explore ultrafast structural transformation in a photo-excited GST superlattice, where GeTe and Sb$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ are spatially separated, using coherent phonon spectroscopy with pump-pump-probe sequences. By analysing the coherent phonon spectra in different time regions, complex structural dynamics upon excitation are observed in GST superlattice (but not in GST alloys), which can be described as the mixing of Ge sites from two different coordination environments. Our results suggest possible applicability of GST superlattice for ultrafast switching devices.

Frequency comb generation at THz frequencies by coherent phonon excitation in Si

High-order nonlinear light-matter interactions in gases enable generation of x-ray and attosecond light pulses, metrology, and spectroscopy. Optical nonlinearities in solid-state materials are particularly interesting for combining optical and electronic functions for high-bandwidth information processing. Third-order nonlinear optical processes in silicon have been used to process optical signals with greater than 1 GHz bandwidths. Fundamental physical processes for a Si-based optical modulator in the THz bandwidth range, however, have not yet been explored. Here we demonstrate ultrafast phononic modulation of the optical index of Si by irradiation with intense few-cycle femtosecond pulses. The anisotropic reflectivity modulation by the resonant Raman susceptibility at the fundamental frequency of the longitudinal optical (LO) phonon of Si (15.6 THz) generates a frequency comb up to 7th-order. All optical >100 THz frequency comb generation is realized by harnessing the coherent atomic motion of the Si crystalline lattice at its highest mechanical frequency.

Ultrafast dephasing of coherent optical phonons in atomically controlled GeTe/Sb$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ superlattices

Femtosecond dynamics of coherent optical phonons in GeTe/Sb$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ superlattices (SLs), a new class of semiconductor SLs with three different states, have been investigated by using a reflection-type pump-probe technique at various lattice temperatures. The time-resolved transient reflectivity (TR) obtained in as-grown SLs exhibits the coherent A$_{1}$ optical modes at 5.10 THz and 3.78 THz, while only the single A$_{1}$ mode at 3.68 THz is observed in annealed SLs. The decay rate of the A$_{1}$ mode in annealed SLs is strongly temperature dependent, while that in as-grown SLs is not temperature dependent. This result indicates that the damping of the coherent A$_{1}$ phonons in amorphous SLs is governed by the phonon-defect (vacancy) scattering rather than the anharmonic phonon-phonon coupling.

Anharmonic Decay of Coherent Optical Phonons in Antimony

Anharmonic decay of coherent optical phonons in semimetal Sb has been investigated by using a femtosecond pump-probe technique. The coherent $A_{1g}$ mode is observed in time domain in a wide temperature range of 7 - 290 K. The decay rate (the inverse of the dephasing time) systematically increases as the lattice temperature increases, which is well explained by anharmonic phonon-phonon coupling, causing decay of the optical phonon into two acoustic phonon modes. The frequency of the $A_{1g}$ mode decreases with the temperature, which is interpreted to the results of both thermal expansion and anharmonic phonon-phonon coupling. The temperature dependence of the amplitude of the coherent $A_{1g}$ mode exhibits a decrease with the lattice temperature, which is well reproduced by considering the peaked intensity of spontaneous Raman scattering assuming a Lorentzian line shape with the linewidth controlled by the anharmonic decay, and this model can be applicable to other metallic system, like Zn.

Coherent phonon study of (GeTe)$_{l}$(Sb$_{2}$Te$_{3}$)$_{m}$ interfacial phase change memory materials

The time-resolved reflectivity measurements were carried out on the interfacial phase change memory (iPCM) materials ([(GeTe)$_{2}$(Sb$_{2}$Te$_{3}$)$_{4}$]$_{8}$ and [(GeTe)$_{2}$(Sb$_{2}$Te$_{3}$)$_{1}$]$_{20}$) as well as conventional Ge$_{2}$Sb$_{2}$Te$_{5}$ alloy at room temperature and above the RESET-SET phase transition temperature. In the high-temperature phase, coherent phonons were clearly observed in the iPCM samples while drastic attenuation of coherent phonons was induced in the alloy. This difference strongly suggests the atomic rearrangement during the phase transition in iPCMs is much smaller than that in the alloy. These results are consistent with the unique phase transition model in which a quasi-one-dimensional displacement of Ge atoms occurs for iPCMs and a conventional amorphous-crystalline phase transition takes place for the alloy.

Picosecond strain dynamics in Ge$_{2}$Sb$_{2}$Te$_{5}$ monitored by time-resolved x-ray diffraction

Coherent phonons (CP) generated by laser pulses on the femtosecond scale have been proposed as a means to achieve ultrafast, non-thermal switching in phase-change materials such as Ge$_{2}$Sb$_{2}$Te$_{5}$(GST). Here we use ultrafast optical pump pulses to induce coherent acoustic phonons and stroboscopically measure the corresponding lattice distortions in GST using 100 ps x-ray pulses from the ESRF storage ring. A linear-chain model provides a good description of the observed changes in the diffraction signal, however, the magnitudes of the measured shifts are too large to be explained by thermal effects alone implying the presence of transient non-equilibrium electron heating in addition to temperature driven expansion. The information on the movement of atoms during the excitation process can lead to greater insight into the possibilities of using CP-induced phase-transitions in GST.

Coherent monochromatic phonons in highly-purified semiconducting single-wall carbon nanotubes

We have used a femtosecond pump-probe impulsive Raman technique to explore the polarization dependence of coherent optical phonons in highly-purified and aligned semiconducting single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). Coherent phonon spectra for the radial breathing modes (RBMs) exhibit a different monochromatic frequency between the film and solution samples, indicating the presence of differing exciton excitation processes. By varying the polarization of the incident pump beam on the aligned SWCNT film, we found that the anisotropy of the coherent RBM excitation depends on the laser wavelength, which we consider to be associated with the resonant and off-resonant behavior of RBM excitation.

Coherent phonon induced optical modulation in semiconductors at terahertz frequencies

The coherent modulation of electronic and vibrational nonlinearities in atoms and molecular gases by intense few-cycle pulses has been used for high-harmonic generation in the soft X-ray and attosecond regime, as well as for Raman frequency combs that span multiple octaves from the Terahertz to Petahertz frequency regions. In principle, similar high-order nonlinear processes can be excited efficiently in solids and liquids on account of their high nonlinear polarizability densities. In this paper, we demonstrate the phononic modulation of the optical index of Si and GaAs for excitation and probing near their direct band gaps, respectively at ~3.4 eV and ~3.0 eV. The large amplitude coherent longitudinal optical polarization due to the excitation of longitudinal optical (LO) phonon of Si (001) and LO phonon-plasmon coupled modes in GaAs (001) excited by 10-fs laser pulses induces effective amplitude and phase modulation of the reflected probe light. The combined action of the amplitude and phase modulation in Si and GaAs generates phonon frequency combs with more than 100 and 60 THz bandwidth, respectively.

The birth of a quasiparticle in Si observed in time-frequency space

The concept of quasiparticles in solid-state physics is an extremely powerful way to describe complex many-body phenomena in terms of single particle excitations. Introducing a simple particle such as electron, e, hole, h, or a phonon, p, deforms a many-body system through interaction with other particles. We say the added particle is dressed or renormalized by a self-energy cloud that describes the response of the many-body system forming a new entity, the quasiparticle. With ultrafast laser techniques we can impulsively generate bare particles and observe their dressing by the many-body interactions, that is quasiparticle formation, on the time and energy scales governed by the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. Here we present the coherent response of Si to excitation with a 10 femtosecond (10-14 s) laser pulse. The optical pulse interacts with the sample via the complex second-order nonlinear susceptibility to generate a force on the lattice driving coherent phonon excitation. Transforming the transient reflectivity signal into frequency-time space by wavelet transform reveals interference effects leading to the coherent phonon generation and subsequent dressing of the phonon by electron-hole, e-h, pair excitations.

Polarization Dependent Optical Control of Atomic Arrangement in Multilayer Ge-Sb-Te Phase Change Materials

We report the optical perturbation of atomic arrangement in the layered GeTe/Sb_{2}Te_{3} phase change memory material. To observe the structural change, the coherent A_{1} mode of GeTe_{4} local structure is investigated at various polarization angles of femtosecond pump pulses with the fluence at < 78 μJ/cm^{2}. p-polarization found to be more effective in inducing the A_{1} frequency shift that can be either reversible or irreversible, depending on the pump fluence. The predominant origin of this shift is attributed to rearrangement of Ge atoms driven by anisotropic dissociation of the Ge-Te bonds along the [111] axis after the p-polarized pulse irradiation.

Control of carrier transport in GaAs by longitudinal-optical phonon-carrier scattering using a pair of laser pump pulses

We demonstrate optical control of the LO phonon-plasmon coupled (LOPC) modes in GaAs by using a femtosecond pump-pulse pair. The relaxation time of the plasmon-like LOPC mode significantly depends on the separation time (Δt) of the pump-pulse pair. Especially it is maximized when Δt becomes simultaneously comparable to the half period of the longitudinal optical (LO) phonon oscillation and resonant to the 3/4 period of the plasmon-like LOPC oscillation. We attribute these observations to the modification of carrier-LO phonon scattering and ballistic motion of the plasmon-like LOPC mode.

Forcibly driven coherent soft phonons in GeTe with intense THz-rate pump fields

We propose an experimental technique to generate large amplitude coherent phonons with irradiation of THz-rate pump pulses and to study the dynamics of phase transition in GeTe ferroelectrics. When a single pump pulse irradiates the sample at various pump power densities, the frequency of the soft phonon decreases sub-linearly and saturates at higher pump powers. By contrast, when THz-rate pump pulse sequence irradiates the sample at matched time intervals to forcibly drive the oscillation, a large red-shift of the phonon frequency is observed without saturation effects. After excitation with a four pump pulse sequence, the coherent soft phonon becomes strongly damped leading to a near critical damping condition. This condition indicates that the lattice is driven to a precursor state of the phase transition.

Thermal conductivity of GeTe/Sb$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ superlattices measured by coherent phonon spectroscopy

We report on evaluation of lattice thermal conductivity of GeTe/Sb$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ superlattice (SL) by using femtosecond coherent phonon spectroscopy at various lattice temperatures. The time-resolved transient reflectivity obtained in amorphous and crystalline GeTe/Sb$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ SL films exhibits the coherent $A_{1}$ optical modes at terahertz (THz) frequencies with picoseconds dephasing time. Based on the Debye theory, we calculate the lattice thermal conductivity, including scattering by grain boundary and point defect, umklapp process, and phonon resonant scattering. The results indicate that the thermal conductivity in amorphous SL is less temperature dependent, being attributed to dominant phonon-defect scattering.

Ultrafast optical manipulation of atomic arrangements in chalcogenide alloy memory materials

A class of chalcogenide alloy materials that shows significant changes in optical properties upon an amorphous-to-crystalline phase transition has lead to development of large data capacities in modern optical data storage. Among chalcogenide phase-change materials, Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) is most widely used because of its reliability. We use a pair of femtosecond light pulses to demonstrate the ultrafast optical manipulation of atomic arrangements from tetrahedral (amorphous) to octahedral (crystalline) Ge-coordination in GST superlattices. Depending on the parameters of the second pump-pulse, ultrafast nonthermal phase-change occurred within only few-cycles (~ 1 ps) of the coherent motion corresponding to a GeTe4 local vibration. Using the ultrafast switch in chalcogenide alloy memory could lead to a major paradigm shift in memory devices beyond the current generation of silicon-based flash-memory.

Selective enhancement of coherent optical phonons using THz-rate pulse train

Selective enhancement of coherent optical phonons in Bi-Sb mixed crystals has been performed using terahertz (THz) rate pulse trains generated by spatial phase modulation of femtosecond pulse with a liquid-crystal spatial light modulator. The profile of the shaped pulse train has a flat-toped shape. The Bi-Bi, Bi-Sb, and Sb-Sb vibrations can be enhanced and canceled selectively for pulse trains with a suitable repetition rate.

Ultrafast vibrational motion of carbon nanotubes in different pH environments

We have used a femtosecond pump-probe impulsive Raman technique to explore the ultrafast dynamics of micelle suspended single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in various pH environments. The structures of coherent phonon spectra of the radial breathing modes (RBMs) exhibit significant pH dependence, to which we attribute the effect of the protonation at the surface of SWNTs, resulting in the modification of electronic properties of semiconductor SWNTs. Analysis of the time-domain data using a time-frequency transformation uncovers also a second transient longitudinal breathing mode, which vanishes after 1 ps of the photoexcitation.
