Optimisation of the lowest Robin eigenvalue in exterior domains of the hyperbolic plane

We consider the Robin Laplacian in the exterior of a bounded simply-connected Lipschitz domain in the hyperbolic plane. We show that the essential spectrum of this operator is $[\frac14,\infty)$ and that, under convexity assumption on the domain, there exist discrete eigenvalues below $\frac14$ if, and only if, the Robin parameter is below a non-positive critical constant, which depends on the shape of the domain. As the main result, we prove that the lowest Robin eigenvalue for the exterior of a bounded geodesically convex domain $Ω$ in the hyperbolic plane does not exceed such an eigenvalue for the exterior of the geodesic disk, whose geodesic curvature of the boundary is not smaller than the averaged geodesic curvature of the boundary of $Ω$. This result implies as a consequence that under fixed area or fixed perimeter constraints the exterior of the geodesic disk maximises the lowest Robin eigenvalue among exteriors of bounded geodesically convex domains. Moreover, we obtain under the same geometric constraints a reverse inequality between the critical constants.

Sharp estimates for the Laplacian torsional rigidity with negative Robin boundary conditions

Motivated by pioneering works of Bandle and Wagner, given a bounded Lipschitz domain $Ω\subset \mathbb R^d$ with $d\ge3$, we consider the Robin-Laplacian torsional rigidity $τ_α(Ω)$ with negative boundary parameter $α$ and we show that sharp inequalities for $τ_α(Ω)$ hold if $|α|$ is small enough. In particular, we prove that, if $|α|$ is smaller than the first non-trivial Steklov-Laplacian eigenvalue, then the ball maximises $τ_α(Ω)$ among all convex domains under perimeter or volume constraints. This solves an open problem raised by Bandle and Wagner. We also prove the result in the planar case among simply connected sets and under perimeter constraint.

Pseudomodes for non-self-adjoint Dirac operators

Depending on the behaviour of the complex-valued electromagnetic potential in the neighbourhood of infinity, pseudomodes of one-dimensional Dirac operators corresponding to large pseudoeigenvalues are constructed. This is a first systematic non-semi-classical approach, which results in substantial progress in achieving optimal conditions and conclusions as well as in covering a wide class of previously inaccessible potentials, including superexponential ones.

Spectral optimisation of Dirac rectangles

We are concerned with the dependence of the lowest positive eigenvalue of the Dirac operator on the geometry of rectangles, subject to infinite-mass boundary conditions. We conjecture that the square is a global minimiser both under the area or perimeter constraints. Contrary to well-known non-relativistic analogues, we show that the present spectral problem does not admit explicit solutions. We prove partial optimisation results based on a variational reformulation and newly established lower and upper bounds to the Dirac eigenvalue. We also propose an alternative approach based on symmetries of rectangles and a non-convex minimisation problem; this implies a sufficient condition formulated in terms of a symmetry of the minimiser which guarantees the conjectured results.

Bound states in semi-Dirac semi-metals

New insights into transport properties of nanostructures with a linear dispersion along one direction and a quadratic dispersion along another are obtained by analysing their spectral stability properties under small perturbations. Physically relevant sufficient and necessary conditions to guarantee the existence of discrete eigenvalues are derived under rather general assumptions on external fields. One of the most interesting features of the analysis is the evident spectral instability of the systems in the weakly coupled regime. The rigorous theoretical results are illustrated by numerical experiments and predictions for physical experiments are made.

From Lieb-Thirring inequalities to spectral enclosures for the damped wave equation

Using a correspondence between the spectrum of the damped wave equation and non-self-adjoint Schroedinger operators, we derive various bounds on complex eigenvalues of the former. In particular, we establish a sharp result that the one-dimensional damped wave operator is similar to the undamped one provided that the L^1 norm of the (possibly complex-valued) damping is less than 2. It follows that these small dampings are spectrally undetectable.

On the two-dimensional quantum confined Stark effect in strong electric fields

We consider a Stark Hamiltonian on a two-dimensional bounded domain with Dirichlet boundary conditions. In the strong electric field limit we derive, under certain local convexity conditions, a three-term asymptotic expansion of the low-lying eigenvalues. This shows that the excitation frequencies are proportional to the square root of the boundary curvature at a certain point determined by the direction of the electric field.

Soft quantum waveguides with an explicit cut-locus

We consider two-dimensional Schroedinger operators with an attractive potential in the form of a channel of a fixed profile built along an unbounded curve composed of a circular arc and two straight semi-lines. Using a test-function argument with help of parallel coordinates outside the cut-locus of the curve, we establish the existence of discrete eigenvalues. This is a special variant of a recent result of Exner in a non-smooth case and via a different technique which does not require non-positive constraining potentials.

Spectral analysis of the diffusion operator with random jumps from the boundary

Using an operator-theoretic framework in a Hilbert-space setting, we perform a detailed spectral analysis of the one-dimensional Laplacian in a bounded interval, subject to specific non-self-adjoint connected boundary conditions modelling a random jump from the boundary to a point inside the interval. In accordance with previous works, we find that all the eigenvalues are real. As the new results, we derive and analyse the adjoint operator, determine the geometric and algebraic multiplicities of the eigenvalues, write down formulae for the eigenfunctions together with the generalised eigenfunctions and study their basis properties. It turns out that the latter heavily depend on whether the distance of the interior point to the centre of the interval divided by the length of the interval is rational or irrational. Finally, we find a closed formula for the metric operator that provides a similarity transform of the problem to a self-adjoint operator.

Absence of eigenvalues of Dirac and Pauli Hamiltonians via the method of multipliers

By developing the method of multipliers, we establish sufficient conditions on the magnetic field and the complex, matrix-valued electric potential, which guarantee that the corresponding system of Schrödinger operators has no point spectrum. In particular, this allows us to prove analogous results for Pauli operators under the same electromagnetic conditions and, in turn, as a consequence of the supersymmetric structure, also for magnetic Dirac operators.

preprint2019arXiv

Absence of eigenvalues of non-self-adjoint Robin Laplacians on the half-space

By developing the method of multipliers, we establish sufficient conditions which guarantee the total absence of eigenvalues of the Laplacian in the half-space, subject to variable complex Robin boundary conditions. As a further application of this technique, uniform resolvent estimates are derived under the same assumptions on the potential. Some of the results are new even in the self-adjoint setting, where we obtain quantum-mechanically natural conditions.

Effective quantum dynamics on the Möbius strip

The Laplace-Beltrami operator in the curved Möbius strip is investigated in the limit when the width of the strip tends to zero. By establishing a norm-resolvent convergence, it is shown that spectral properties of the operator are approximated well by an unconventional flat model whose spectrum can be computed explicitly in terms of Mathieu functions. Contrary to the traditional flat Möbius strip, our effective model contains a geometric potential. A comparison of the three models is made and analytical results are accompanied by numerical computations.

Location of eigenvalues of non-self-adjoint discrete Dirac operators

We provide quantitative estimates on the location of eigenvalues of one-dimensional discrete Dirac operators with complex $\ell^p$-potentials for $1\leq p\leq\infty$. As a corollary, subsets of the essential spectrum free of embedded eigenvalues are determined for small $\ell^1$-potential. Further possible improvements and sharpness of the obtained spectral bounds are also discussed.

Quantum strips in higher dimensions

We consider the Dirichlet Laplacian in unbounded strips on ruled surfaces in any space dimension. We locate the essential spectrum under the condition that the strip is asymptotically flat. If the Gauss curvature of the strip equals zero, we establish the existence of discrete spectrum under the condition that the curve along which the strip is built is not a geodesic. On the other hand, if it is a geodesic and the Gauss curvature is not identically equal to zero, we prove the existence of Hardy-type inequalities. We also derive an effective operator for thin strips, which enables one to replace the spectral problem for the Laplace-Beltrami operator on the two-dimensional surface by a one-dimensional Schroedinger operator whose potential is expressed in terms of curvatures. In the appendix, we establish a purely geometric fact about the existence of relatively parallel adapted frames for any curve under minimal regularity hypotheses.

Complex magnetic fields: An improved Hardy-Laptev-Weidl inequality and quasi-self-adjointness

We show that allowing magnetic fields to be complex-valued leads to an improvement in the magnetic Hardy-type inequality due to Laptev and Weidl. The proof is based on the study of momenta on the circle with complex magnetic fields, which is of independent interest in the context of PT-symmetric and quasi-Hermitian quantum mechanics. We study basis properties of the non-self-adjoint momenta and derive closed formulae for the similarity transforms relating them to self-adjoint operators.

On the improvement of the Hardy inequality due to singular magnetic fields

We establish magnetic improvements upon the classical Hardy inequality for two specific choices of singular magnetic fields. First, we consider the Aharonov-Bohm field in all dimensions and establish a sharp Hardy-type inequality that takes into account both the dimensional as well as the magnetic flux contributions. Second, in the three-dimensional Euclidean space, we derive a non-trivial magnetic Hardy inequality for a magnetic field that vanishes at infinity and diverges along a plane.

preprint2018arXiv

Spectral analysis of sheared nanoribbons

We investigate the spectrum of the Dirichlet Laplacian in a unbounded strip subject to a new deformation of "shearing": the strip is built by translating a segment oriented in a constant direction along an unbounded curve in the plane. We locate the essential spectrum under the hypothesis that the projection of the tangent vector of the curve to the direction of the segment admits a (possibly unbounded) limit at infinity and state sufficient conditions which guarantee the existence of discrete eigenvalues. We justify the optimality of these conditions by establishing a spectral stability in opposite regimes. In particular, Hardy-type inequalities are derived in the regime of repulsive shearing.

Optimisation of the lowest Robin eigenvalue in the exterior of a compact set, II: non-convex domains and higher dimensions

We consider the problem of geometric optimisation of the lowest eigenvalue of the Laplacian in the exterior of a compact set in any dimension, subject to attractive Robin boundary conditions. As an improvement upon our previous work (arXiv:1608.04896, to appear in J. Convex Anal.), we show that under either a constraint of fixed perimeter or area, the maximiser within the class of exteriors of simply connected planar sets is always the exterior of a disk, without the need of convexity assumption. Moreover, we generalise the result to disconnected compact planar sets. Namely, we prove that under a constraint of fixed average value of the perimeter over all the connected components, the maximiser within the class of disconnected compact planar sets, consisting of finitely many simply connected components, is again a disk. In higher dimensions, we prove a completely new result that the lowest point in the spectrum is maximised by the exterior of a ball among all sets exterior to bounded convex sets satisfying a constraint on the integral of a dimensional power of the mean curvature of their boundaries. Furthermore, it follows that the critical coupling at which the lowest point in the spectrum becomes a discrete eigenvalue emerging from the essential spectrum is minimised under the same constraint by the critical coupling for the exterior of a ball.

Spectral transitions for Aharonov-Bohm Laplacians on conical layers

We consider the Laplace operator in a tubular neighbourhood of a conical surface of revolution, subject to an Aharonov-Bohm magnetic field supported on the axis of symmetry and Dirichlet boundary conditions on the boundary of the domain. We show that there exists a critical total magnetic flux depending on the aperture of the conical surface for which the system undergoes an abrupt spectral transition from infinitely many eigenvalues below the essential spectrum to an empty discrete spectrum. For the critical flux we establish a Hardy-type inequality. In the regime with infinite discrete spectrum we obtain sharp spectral asymptotics with refined estimate of the remainder and investigate the dependence of the eigenvalues on the aperture of the surface and the flux of the magnetic field.

The Hardy inequality and the heat flow in curved wedges

We show that the polynomial decay rate of the heat semigroup of the Dirichlet Laplacian in curved planar wedges equals the sum of the usual dimensional decay rate and a multiple of the reciprocal value of the opening angle. To prove the result, we develop the method of self-similar variables for the associated heat equation and study the asymptotic behaviour of the transformed non-autonomous parabolic problem for large times. We also establish an improved Hardy inequality for the Dirichlet Laplacian in non-trivially curved wedges and state a conjecture about an improved decay rate in this case.

Qualitative analysis of trapped Dirac fermions in graphene

We study the confinement of Dirac fermions in graphene and in carbon nanotubes by an external magnetic field, mechanical deformations or inhomogeneities in the substrate. By applying variational principles to the square of the Dirac operator, we obtain sufficient and necessary conditions for confinement of the quasi-particles. The rigorous theoretical results are illustrated on the realistic examples of the three classes of traps.

Alexandrov's isodiametric conjecture and the cut locus of a surface

We prove that Alexandrov's conjecture relating the area and diameter of a convex surface holds for the surface of a general ellipsoid. This is a direct consequence of a more general result which estimates the deviation from the optimal conjectured bound in terms of the length of the cut locus of a point on the surface. We also prove that the natural extension of the conjecture to general dimension holds among closed convex spherically symmetric Riemannian manifolds. Our results are based on a new symmetrization procedure which we believe to be interesting in its own right.

Nodal sets of thin curved layers

This paper is concerned with the location of nodal sets of eigenfunctions of the Dirichlet Laplacian in thin tubular neighbourhoods of hypersurfaces of the Euclidean space of arbitrary dimension. In the limit when the radius of the neighbourhood tends to zero, it is known that spectral properties of the Laplacian are approximated well by an effective Schrödinger operator on the hypersurface with a potential expressed solely in terms of principal curvatures. By applying techniques of elliptic partial differential equations, we strengthen the known perturbation results to get a convergence of eigenfunctions in Hölder spaces. This enables us in particular to conclude that every nodal set has a non-empty intersection with the boundary of the tubular neighbourhood.

preprint2014arXiv

The first Robin eigenvalue with negative boundary parameter

We give a counterexample to the long standing conjecture that the ball maximises the first eigenvalue of the Robin eigenvalue problem with negative parameter among domains of the same volume. Furthermore, we show that the conjecture holds in two dimensions provided that the boundary parameter is small. This is the first known example within the class of isoperimetric spectral problems for the first eigenvalue of the Laplacian where the ball is not an optimiser.

Magnetic effects in curved quantum waveguides

The interplay among the spectrum, geometry and magnetic field in tubular neighbourhoods of curves in Euclidean spaces is investigated in the limit when the cross section shrinks to a point. Proving a norm resolvent convergence, we derive effective, lower-dimensional models which depend on the intensity of the magnetic field and curvatures. The results are used to establish complete asymptotic expansions for eigenvalues. Spectral stability properties based on Hardy-type inequalities induced by magnetic fields are also analysed.

Spectral analysis of a quantum system with a double line singular interaction

We consider a non-relativistic quantum particle interacting with a singular potential supported by two parallel straight lines in the plane. We locate the essential spectrum under the hypothesis that the interaction asymptotically approaches a constant value and find conditions which guarantee either the existence of discrete eigenvalues or Hardy-type inequalities. For a class of our models admitting a mirror symmetry, we also establish the existence of embedded eigenvalues and show that they turn into resonances after introducing a small perturbation.

Spectrum of the Laplacian in narrow tubular neighbourhoods of hypersurfaces with combined Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions

We consider the Laplacian in a domain squeezed between two parallel hypersurfaces in Euclidean spaces of any dimension, subject to Dirichlet boundary conditions on one of the hypersurfaces and Neumann boundary conditions on the other. We derive two-term asymptotics for eigenvalues in the limit when the distance between the hypersurfaces tends to zero. The asymptotics are uniform and local in the sense that the coefficients depend only on the extremal points where the ratio of the area of the Neumann boundary to the Dirichlet one is locally the biggest.

The magnetic Laplacian in shrinking tubular neighbourhoods of hypersurfaces

The Dirichlet Laplacian between two parallel hypersurfaces in Euclidean spaces of any dimension in the presence of a magnetic field is considered in the limit when the distance between the hypersurfaces tends to zero. We show that the Laplacian converges in a norm-resolvent sense to a Schroedinger operator on the limiting hypersurface whose electromagnetic potential is expressed in terms of principal curvatures and the projection of the ambient vector potential to the hypersurface. As an application, we obtain an effective approximation of bound-state energies and eigenfunctions in thin quantum layers.

preprint2012arXiv

Location of the essential spectrum in curved quantum layers

We consider the Dirichlet Laplacian in tubular neighbourhoods of complete non-compact Riemannian manifolds immersed in the Euclidean space. We show that the essential spectrum coincides with the spectrum of a planar tube provided that the second fundamental form of the manifold vanishes at infinity and the transport of the cross-section along the manifold is asymptotically parallel. For low dimensions and codimensions, the result applies to the location of propagating states in nanostructures under physically natural conditions.

On the metric operator for the imaginary cubic oscillator

We show that the eigenvectors of the PT-symmetric imaginary cubic oscillator are complete, but do not form a Riesz basis. This results in the existence of a bounded metric operator having intrinsic singularity reflected in the inevitable unboundedness of the inverse. Moreover, the existence of non-trivial pseudospectrum is observed. In other words, there is no quantum-mechanical Hamiltonian associated with it via bounded and boundedly invertible similarity transformations. These results open new directions in physical interpretation of PT-symmetric models with intrinsically singular metric, since their properties are essentially different with respect to self-adjoint Hamiltonians, for instance, due to spectral instabilities.

The Cheeger constant of curved strips

We study the Cheeger constant and Cheeger set for domains obtained as strip-like neighbourhoods of curves in the plane. If the reference curve is complete and finite (a "curved annulus"), then the strip itself is a Cheeger set and the Cheeger constant equals the inverse of the half-width of the strip. The latter holds true for unbounded strips as well, but there is no Cheeger set. Finally, for strips about non-complete finite curves, we derive lower and upper bounds to the Cheeger set, which become sharp for infinite curves. The paper is concluded by numerical results for circular sectors.

The effective Hamiltonian in curved quantum waveguides under mild regularity assumptions

The Dirichlet Laplacian in a curved three-dimensional tube built along a spatial (bounded or unbounded) curve is investigated in the limit when the uniform cross-section of the tube diminishes. Both deformations due to bending and twisting of the tube are considered. We show that the Laplacian converges in a norm-resolvent sense to the well known one-dimensional Schroedinger operator whose potential is expressed in terms of the curvature of the reference curve, the twisting angle and a constant measuring the asymmetry of the cross-section. Contrary to previous results, we allow the reference curves to have non-continuous and possibly vanishing curvature. For such curves, the distinguished Frenet frame standardly used to define the tube need not exist and, moreover, the known approaches to prove the result for unbounded tubes do not work. Our main ideas how to establish the norm-resolvent convergence under the minimal regularity assumptions are to use an alternative frame defined by a parallel transport along the curve and a refined smoothing of the curvature via the Steklov approximation.

The Brownian traveller on manifolds

We study the influence of the intrinsic curvature on the large time behaviour of the heat equation in a tubular neighbourhood of an unbounded geodesic in a two-dimensional Riemannian manifold. Since we consider killing boundary conditions, there is always an exponential-type decay for the heat semigroup. We show that this exponential-type decay is slower for positively curved manifolds comparing to the flat case. As the main result, we establish a sharp extra polynomial-type decay for the heat semigroup on negatively curved manifolds comparing to the flat case. The proof employs the existence of Hardy-type inequalities for the Dirichlet Laplacian in the tubular neighbourhoods on negatively curved manifolds and the method of self-similar variables and weighted Sobolev spaces for the heat equation.

The effective Hamiltonian for thin layers with non-Hermitian Robin-type boundary conditions

The Laplacian in an unbounded tubular neighbourhood of a hyperplane with non-Hermitian complex-symmetric Robin-type boundary conditions is investigated in the limit when the width of the neighbourhood diminishes. We show that the Laplacian converges in a norm resolvent sense to a self-adjoint Schroedinger operator in the hyperplane whose potential is expressed solely in terms of the boundary coupling function. As a consequence, we are able to explain some peculiar spectral properties of the non-Hermitian Laplacian by known results for Schroedinger operators.

preprint2011arXiv

The improved decay rate for the heat semigroup with local magnetic field in the plane

We consider the heat equation in the presence of compactly supported magnetic field in the plane. We show that the magnetic field leads to an improvement of the decay rate of the heat semigroup by a polynomial factor with power proportional to the distance of the total magnetic flux to the discrete set of flux quanta. The proof employs Hardy-type inequalities due to Laptev and Weidl for the two-dimensional magnetic Schroedinger operator and the method of self-similar variables and weighted Sobolev spaces for the heat equation. A careful analysis of the asymptotic behaviour of the heat equation in the similarity variables shows that the magnetic field asymptotically degenerates to an Aharonov-Bohm magnetic field with the same total magnetic flux, which leads asymptotically to the gain on the polynomial decay rate in the original physical variables. Since no assumptions about the symmetry of the magnetic field are made in the present work, it confirms that the recent results of Kovarik about large-time asymptotics of the heat kernel of magnetic Schroedinger operators with radially symmetric field hold in greater generality.

PT-symmetric models in curved manifolds

We consider the Laplace-Beltrami operator in tubular neighbourhoods of curves on two-dimensional Riemannian manifolds, subject to non-Hermitian parity and time preserving boundary conditions. We are interested in the interplay between the geometry and spectrum. After introducing a suitable Hilbert space framework in the general situation, which enables us to realize the Laplace-Beltrami operator as an m-sectorial operator, we focus on solvable models defined on manifolds of constant curvature. In some situations, notably for non-Hermitian Robin-type boundary conditions, we are able to prove either the reality of the spectrum or the existence of complex conjugate pairs of eigenvalues, and establish similarity of the non-Hermitian m-sectorial operators to normal or self-adjoint operators. The study is illustrated by numerical computations.

preprint2010arXiv

The asymptotic behaviour of the heat equation in a twisted Dirichlet-Neumann waveguide

We consider the heat equation in a straight strip, subject to a combination of Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. We show that a switch of the respective boundary conditions leads to an improvement of the decay rate of the heat semigroup of the order of $t^{-1/2}$. The proof employs similarity variables that lead to a non-autonomous parabolic equation in a thin strip contracting to the real line, that can be analyzed on weighted Sobolev spaces in which the operators under consideration have discrete spectra. A careful analysis of its asymptotic behaviour shows that an added Dirichlet boundary condition emerges asymptotically at the switching point, breaking the real line in two half-lines, which leads asymptotically to the 1/2 gain on the spectral lower bound, and the $t^{-1/2}$ gain on the decay rate in the original physical variables. This result is an adaptation to the case of strips with twisted boundary conditions of previous results by the authors on geometrically twisted Dirichlet tubes.

Geometric versus spectral convergence for the Neumann Laplacian under exterior perturbations of the domain

We analyze the behavior of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Laplace operator with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions when the domain is perturbed. We focus on exterior perturbations of the domain, that is, the limit domain is contained in each of the perturbed domains. Moreover, the family of perturbed domains is made up of bounded domains although not necessarily uniformly bounded. We show that if we know that the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the perturbed domains converge to the ones of the limit domain, then necessarily we have that the measure of the perturbation tends to zero, while it is not necessarily true for the Hausdorff distance of the perturbation. As a matter of fact we will construct an example of a perturbation where the spectra behave continuously but the distance tends to infinity.

Spectrum of the Laplacian in a narrow curved strip with combined Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions

We consider the Laplacian in a domain squeezed between two parallel curves in the plane, subject to Dirichlet boundary conditions on one of the curves and Neumann boundary conditions on the other. We derive two-term asymptotics for eigenvalues in the limit when the distance between the curves tends to zero. The asymptotics are uniform and local in the sense that the coefficients depend only on the extremal points where the ratio of the curvature radii of the Neumann boundary to the Dirichlet one is the biggest. We also show that the asymptotics can be obtained from a form of norm-resolvent convergence which takes into account the width-dependence of the domain of definition of the operators involved.

Bound States in Mildly Curved Layers

It has been shown recently that a nonrelativistic quantum particle constrained to a hard-wall layer of constant width built over a geodesically complete simply connected noncompact curved surface can have bound states provided the surface is not a plane. In this paper we study the weak-coupling asymptotics of these bound states, i.e. the situation when the surface is a mildly curved plane. Under suitable assumptions about regularity and decay of surface curvatures we derive the leading order in the ground-state eigenvalue expansion. The argument is based on Birman-Schwinger analysis of Schroedinger operators in a planar hard-wall layer.

Waveguides coupled through a semitransparent barrier: a Birman-Schwinger analysis

The paper is devoted to a model of a mesoscopic system consisting of a pair of parallel planar waveguides separated by an infinitely thin semitransparent boundary modeled by a transverse delta interaction. We develop the Birman-Schwinger theory for the corresponding generalized Schroedinger operator. The spectral properties become nontrivial if the barrier coupling is not invariant with respect to longitudinal translations, in particular, there are bound states if the barrier is locally more transparent in the mean and the coupling parameter reaches the same asymptotic value in both directions along the guide axis. We derive the weak-coupling expansion of the ground-state eigenvalue for the cases when the perturbation is small in the supremum and the L^1-norms. The last named result applies to the situation when the support of the leaky part shrinks: the obtained asymptotics differs from that of a double guide divided by a pierced Dirichlet barrier. We also derive an upper bound on the number of bound states.
