Operator-valued Fourier multipliers of bounded s-variation

In this paper, we establish an operator-valued Fourier multiplier theorem in weighted Lebesgue spaces, Besov and Triebel--Lizorkin spaces, assuming the multiplier has R\mathcal{R}-bounded range and satisfies an ℓr\ell^r-summability condition on its bounded ss-variation seminorms over dyadic intervals. The exponents rr and ss reflect the relationship between the geometric properties of the underlying Banach spaces (type and cotype) and the boundedness of Fourier multiplier operators. As our main tool we prove a weighted vector-valued variational Carleson inequality and deduce an estimate of Littlewood--Paley--Rubio de Francia type.

Nonlinear parabolic stochastic evolution equations in critical spaces Part I. Stochastic maximal regularity and local existence

In this paper we develop a new approach to nonlinear stochastic partial differential equations with Gaussian noise. Our aim is to provide an abstract framework which is applicable to a large class of SPDEs and includes many important cases of nonlinear parabolic problems which are of quasi- or semilinear type. This first part is on local existence and well-posedness. A second part in preparation is on blow-up criteria and regularization. Our theory is formulated in an LpL^p-setting, and because of this we can deal with nonlinearities in a very efficient way. Applications to several concrete problems and their quasilinear variants are given. This includes Burger's equation, the Allen-Cahn equation, the Cahn-Hilliard equation, reaction-diffusion equations, and the porous media equation. The interplay of the nonlinearities and the critical spaces of initial data leads to new results and insights for these SPDEs. The proofs are based on recent developments in maximal regularity theory for the linearized problem for deterministic and stochastic evolution equations. In particular, our theory can be seen as a stochastic version of the theory of critical spaces due to Prüss-Simonett-Wilke (2018). Sharp weighted time-regularity allow us to deal with rough initial values and obtain instantaneous regularization results. The abstract well-posedness results are obtained by a combination of several sophisticated splitting and truncation arguments.

Nonlinear parabolic stochastic evolution equations in critical spaces Part II. Blow-up criteria and instantaneous regularization

This paper is a continuation of Part I of this project, where we developed a new local well-posedness theory for nonlinear stochastic PDEs with Gaussian noise. In the current Part II we consider blow-up criteria and regularization phenomena. As in Part I we can allow nonlinearities with polynomial growth, and rough initial values from critical spaces. In the first main result we obtain several new blow-up criteria for quasi- and semilinear stochastic evolution equations. In particular, for semilinear equations we obtain a Serrin type blow-up criterium, which extends a recent result of Prüss-Simonett-Wilke (2018) to the stochastic setting. Blow-up criteria can be used to prove global well-posedness for SPDEs. As in Part I, maximal regularity techniques and weights in time play a central role in the proofs. Our second contribution is a new method to bootstrap Sobolev and Hölder regularity in time and space, which does not require smoothness of the initial data. The blow-up criteria are at the basis of these new methods. Moreover, in applications the bootstrap results can be combined with our blow-up criteria, to obtain efficient ways to prove global existence. This gives new results even in classical L2L^2-settings, which we illustrate for a concrete SPDE. In future works in preparation we apply the results of the current paper to obtain global well-posedness results, and regularity for several concrete SPDEs. These include stochastic Navier-Stokes, reaction diffusion equations, and Allen-Cahn equations. Our setting allows to put these SPDEs into a more flexible framework, where less restrictions on the nonlinearities are needed, and we are able to treat rough initial values from critical spaces. Moreover, we will obtain higher order regularity results.

On the trace embedding and its applications to evolution equations

In this paper we consider traces at initial times for functions with mixed time-space smoothness. Such results are often needed in the theory of evolution equations. Our result extends and unifies many previous results. Our main improvement is that we can allow general interpolation couples. The abstract results are applied to regularity problems for fractional evolution equations and stochastic evolution equation, where uniform trace estimates on the half-line are shown.

Singular stochastic integral operators

In this paper we introduce Calderón-Zygmund theory for singular stochastic integrals with operator-valued kernel. In particular, we prove LpL^p-extrapolation results under a Hörmander condition on the kernel. Sparse domination and sharp weighted bounds are obtained under a Dini condition on the kernel, leading to a stochastic version of the solution to the A2A_2-conjecture. The results are applied to obtain pp-independence and weighted bounds for stochastic maximal LpL^p-regularity both in the complex and real interpolation scale. As a consequence we obtain several new regularity results for the stochastic heat equation on Rd\mathbb{R}^d and smooth and angular domains.

The heat equation with rough boundary conditions and holomorphic functional calculus

In this paper we consider the Laplace operator with Dirichlet boundary conditions on a smooth domain. We prove that it has a bounded H∞H^\infty-calculus on weighted LpL^p-spaces for power weights which fall outside the classical class of ApA_p-weights. Furthermore, we characterize the domain of the operator and derive several consequences on elliptic and parabolic regularity. In particular, we obtain a new maximal regularity result for the heat equation with rough inhomogeneous boundary data.

Maximal regularity for non-autonomous equations with measurable dependence on time

In this paper we study maximal LpL^p-regularity for evolution equations with time-dependent operators AA. We merely assume a measurable dependence on time. In the first part of the paper we present a new sufficient condition for the LpL^p-boundedness of a class of vector-valued singular integrals which does not rely on Hörmander conditions in the time variable. This is then used to develop an abstract operator-theoretic approach to maximal regularity. The results are applied to the case of mm-th order elliptic operators AA with time and space-dependent coefficients. Here the highest order coefficients are assumed to be measurable in time and continuous in the space variables. This results in an Lp(Lq)L^p(L^q)-theory for such equations for p,q∈(1,∞)p,q\in (1, \infty). In the final section we extend a well-posedness result for quasilinear equations to the time-dependent setting. Here we give an example of a nonlinear parabolic PDE to which the result can be applied.

RR-boundedness versus γγ-boundedness

It is well-known that in Banach spaces with finite cotype, the RR-bounded and γγ-bounded families of operators coincide. If in addition XX is a Banach lattice, then these notions can be expressed as square function estimates. It is also clear that RR-boundedness implies γγ-boundedness. In this note we show that all other possible inclusions fail. Furthermore, we will prove that RR-boundedness is stable under taking adjoints if and only if the underlying space is KK-convex.

Estimates for vector-valued holomorphic functions and Littlewood-Paley-Stein theory

In this paper we consider generalized square function norms of holomorphic functions with values in a Banach space. One of the main results is a characterization of embeddings of the form Lp(X)⊆γ(X)⊆Lq(X),L^p(X)\subseteq γ(X) \subseteq L^q(X), in terms of the type pp and cotype qq for the Banach space XX. As an application we prove LpL^p-estimates for vector-valued Littlewood-Paley-Stein gg-functions and derive an embedding result for real and complex interpolation spaces under type and cotype conditions.

A new approach to stochastic evolution equations with adapted drift

In this paper we develop a new approach to stochastic evolution equations with an unbounded drift AA which is dependent on time and the underlying probability space in an adapted way. It is well-known that the semigroup approach to equations with random drift leads to adaptedness problems for the stochastic convolution term. In this paper we give a new representation formula for the stochastic convolution which avoids integration of nonadapted processes. Here we mainly consider the parabolic setting. We establish connections with other solution concepts such as weak solutions. The usual parabolic regularity properties are derived and we show that the new approach can be applied in the study of semilinear problems with random drift. At the end of the paper the results are illustrated with two examples of stochastic heat equations with random drift.

Forward integration, convergence and nonadapted pointwise multipliers

In this paper we study the forward integral of operator-valued processes with respect to a cylindrical Brownian motion. In particular, we provide conditions under which the approximating sequence of processes of the forward integral, converges to the stochastic integral process with respect to Sobolev norms of smoothness alpha < 1/2. This result will be used to derive a new integration by parts formula for the forward integral.

Maximal gamma-regularity

In this paper we prove maximal regularity estimates in "square function spaces" which are commonly used in harmonic analysis, spectral theory, and stochastic analysis. In particular, they lead to a new class of maximal regularity results for both deterministic and stochastic equations in LpL^p-spaces with 1<p<∞1<p<\infty. For stochastic equations, the case 1<p<21<p<2 was not covered in the literature so far. Moreover, the "square function spaces" allow initial values with the same roughness as in the L2L^2-setting.

On the R-boundedness of stochastic convolution operators

The RR-boundedness of certain families of vector-valued stochastic convolution operators with scalar-valued square integrable kernels is the key ingredient in the recent proof of stochastic maximal LpL^p-regularity, 2<p<∞2<p<\infty, for certain classes of sectorial operators acting on spaces X=Lq(μ)X=L^q(μ), 2≤q<∞2\le q<\infty. This paper presents a systematic study of RR-boundedness of such families. Our main result generalises the afore-mentioned RR-boundedness result to a larger class of Banach lattices XX and relates it to the ℓ1\ell^{1}-boundedness of an associated class of deterministic convolution operators. We also establish an intimate relationship between the ℓ1\ell^{1}-boundedness of these operators and the boundedness of the XX-valued maximal function. This analysis leads, quite surprisingly, to an example showing that RR-boundedness of stochastic convolution operators fails in certain UMD Banach lattices with type 22.

Pointwise multiplication on vector-valued function spaces with power weights

We investigate pointwise multipliers on vector-valued function spaces over Rd\mathbb{R}^d, equipped with Muckenhoupt weights. The main result is that in the natural parameter range, the characteristic function of the half-space is a pointwise multiplier on Bessel-potential spaces with values in a UMD Banach space. This is proved for a class of power weights, including the unweighted case, and extends the classical result of Shamir and Strichartz. The multiplication estimate is based on the paraproduct technique and a randomized Littlewood-Paley decomposition. An analogous result is obtained for Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces.

Traces and embeddings of anisotropic function spaces

In this paper we characterize the trace spaces of a class of weighted function spaces of intersection type with mixed regularities. To a large extent we can overcome the difficulty of mixed scales by employing a microscopic improvement in Sobolev and mixed derivative embeddings with fixed integrability. We apply the general results to prove maximal LpL^p-LqL^q-regularity for the linearized, fully inhomogeneous two-phase Stefan problem with Gibbs-Thomson correction.

Tools for Malliavin calculus in UMD Banach spaces

In this paper we study the Malliavin derivatives and Skorohod integrals for processes taking values in an infinite dimensional space. Such results are motivated by their applications to SPDEs and in particular financial mathematics. Vector-valued Malliavin theory in Banach space E is naturally restricted to spaces E which have the so-called UMD property, which arises in harmonic analysis and stochastic integration theory. We provide several new results and tools for the Malliavin derivatives and Skorohod integrals in an infinite dimensional setting. In particular, we prove weak characterizations, a chain rule for Lipschitz functions, a sufficient condition for pathwise continuity and an Ito formula for non-adapted processes.

Weak characterizations of stochastic integrability and Dudley's theorem in infinite dimensions

In this paper we consider stochastic integration with respect to cylindrical Brownian motion in infinite dimensional spaces. We study weak characterizations of stochastic integrability and present a natural continuation of results of van Neerven, Weis and the second named author. The limitation of weak characterizations will be demonstrated with a nontrivial counterexample. The second subject treated in the paper addresses representation theory for random variables in terms of stochastic integrals. In particular, we provide an infinite dimensional version of Dudley's representation theorem for random variables and an extension of Doob's representation for martingales.

Is the stochastic parabolicity condition dependent on pp and qq?

In this paper we study well-posedness of a second order SPDE with multiplicative noise on the torus $\T =[0,2π]$. The equation is considered in $L^p(Ø\times(0,T);L^q(\T))$ for p,q∈(1,∞)p,q\in (1, \infty). It is well-known that if the noise is of gradient type, one needs a stochastic parabolicity condition on the coefficients for well-posedness with p=q=2p=q=2. In this paper we investigate whether the well-posedness depends on pp and qq. It turns out that this condition does depend on pp, but not on qq. Moreover, we show that if 1<p<21<p<2 the classical stochastic parabolicity condition can be weakened.

Maximal LpL^p-regularity for stochastic evolution equations

We prove maximal LpL^p-regularity for the stochastic evolution equation \[\{{aligned} dU(t) + A U(t)\, dt& = F(t,U(t))\,dt + B(t,U(t))\,dW_H(t), \qquad t\in [0,T], U(0) & = u_0, {aligned}.\] under the assumption that AA is a sectorial operator with a bounded H∞H^\infty-calculus of angle less than 12π\frac12π on a space Lq(O,μ)L^q(\mathcal{O},μ). The driving process WHW_H is a cylindrical Brownian motion in an abstract Hilbert space HH. For p∈(2,∞)p\in (2,\infty) and q∈[2,∞)q\in [2,\infty) and initial conditions u0u_0 in the real interpolation space $\XAp $ we prove existence of unique strong solution with trajectories in \[L^p(0,T;\Dom(A))\cap C([0,T];\XAp),\] provided the non-linearities $F:[0,T]\times \Dom(A)\to L^q(\mathcal{O},μ)$ and $B:[0,T]\times \Dom(A) \to \g(H,\Dom(A^{\frac12}))$ are of linear growth and Lipschitz continuous in their second variables with small enough Lipschitz constants. Extensions to the case where AA is an adapted operator-valued process are considered as well. Various applications to stochastic partial differential equations are worked out in detail. These include higher-order and time-dependent parabolic equations and the Navier-Stokes equation on a smooth bounded domain $\OO\subseteq \R^d$ with d≥2d\ge 2. For the latter, the existence of a unique strong local solution with values in $(H^{1,q}(\OO))^d$ is shown.

Sharp embedding results for spaces of smooth functions with power weights

We consider function spaces of Besov, Triebel-Lizorkin, Bessel-potential and Sobolev type on Rd\R^d, equipped with power weights w(x)=∣x∣γw(x) = |x|^γ, γ>−dγ>-d. We prove two-weight Sobolev embeddings for these spaces. Moreover, we precisely characterize for which parameters the embeddings hold. The proofs are presented in such a way that they also hold for vector-valued functions.

Stochastic maximal LpL^p-regularity

In this article we prove a maximal LpL^p-regularity result for stochastic convolutions, which extends Krylov's basic mixed Lp(Lq)L^p(L^q)-inequality for the Laplace operator on Rd{\mathbb{R}}^d to large classes of elliptic operators, both on Rd{\mathbb{R}}^d and on bounded domains in Rd{\mathbb{R}}^d with various boundary conditions. Our method of proof is based on McIntosh's H∞H^{\infty}-functional calculus, RR-boundedness techniques and sharp Lp(Lq)L^p(L^q)-square function estimates for stochastic integrals in LqL^q-spaces. Under an additional invertibility assumption on AA, a maximal space--time LpL^p-regularity result is obtained as well.

Vector-valued decoupling and the Burkholder-Davis-Gundy inequality

Let X be a Banach space. We prove p-independence of the one-sided decoupling inequality for X-valued tangent martingales as introduced by Kwapien and Woyczynski. It is known that a Banach space X satisfies the two-sided decoupling inequality if and only if X is a UMD Banach space. The one-sided decoupling inequality is a weaker property, including e.g. the space L^1. We provide information on the optimal constants for various spaces, and give a upper estimate of order p in general. In the second part of our paper we derive Burkholder-Davis-Gundy type estimates for p-th moments, p in (0,infty), of X-valued stochastic integrals, provided X is a UMD Banach space or a space in which the one-sided decoupling inequality holds.

Regularity of Gaussian white noise on the d-dimensional torus

In this paper we prove that a Gaussian white noise on the dd-dimensional torus has paths in the Besov spaces $B^{-d/2}_{p,\infty}(\T^d)$ with p∈[1,∞)p\in [1, \infty). This result is shown to be optimal in several ways. We also show that Gaussian white noise on the dd-dimensional torus has paths in a the Fourier-Besov space $\hat{b}^{-d/p}_{p,\infty}(\T^d)$. This is shown to be optimal as well.

Structurally damped plate and wave equations with random point force in arbitrary space dimensions

In this paper we consider structurally damped plate and wave equations with point and distributed random forces. In order to treat space dimensions more than one, we work in the setting of LqL^q--spaces with (possibly small) q∈(1,2)q\in(1,2). We establish existence, uniqueness and regularity of mild and weak solutions to the stochastic equations employing recent theory for stochastic evolution equations in UMD Banach spaces.

Nemirovski's Inequalities Revisited

An important tool for statistical research are moment inequalities for sums of independent random vectors. Nemirovski and coworkers (1983, 2000) derived one particular type of such inequalities: For certain Banach spaces $(\B,\|\cdot\|)$ there exists a constant $K = K(\B,\|\cdot\|)$ such that for arbitrary independent and centered random vectors $X_1, X_2, ..., X_n \in \B$, their sum SnS_n satisfies the inequality E∥Sn∥2≤K∑i=1nE∥Xi∥2 E \|S_n \|^2 \le K \sum_{i=1}^n E \|X_i\|^2. We present and compare three different approaches to obtain such inequalities: Nemirovski's results are based on deterministic inequalities for norms. Another possible vehicle are type and cotype inequalities, a tool from probability theory on Banach spaces. Finally, we use a truncation argument plus Bernstein's inequality to obtain another version of the moment inequality above. Interestingly, all three approaches have their own merits.
