Spectral multiplier theorems for abstract harmonic oscillators on UMD lattices

We consider operators acting on a UMD Banach lattice $X$ that have the same algebraic structure as the position and momentum operators associated with the harmonic oscillator $-\frac12Δ+ \frac12|x|^{2} $ acting on $L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{d})$. More precisely, we consider abstract harmonic oscillators of the form $\frac12 \sum _{j=1} ^{d}(A_{j}^{2}+B_{j}^{2})$ for tuples of operators $A=(A_{j})_{j=1} ^{d}$ and $B=(B_{k})_{k=1} ^{d}$, where $iA_j$ and $iB_k$ are assumed to generate $C_{0}$ groups and to satisfy the canonical commutator relations. We prove functional calculus results for these abstract harmonic oscillators that match classical Hörmander spectral multiplier estimates for the harmonic oscillator $-\frac12Δ+ \frac12|x|^{2}$ on $L^{p}(\mathbb{R}^{d})$. This covers situations where the underlying metric measure space is not doubling and the use of function spaces that are not particularly well suited to extrapolation arguments. For instance, as an application we treat the harmonic oscillator on mixed norm Bargmann-Fock spaces. Our approach is based on a transference principle for the Schrödinger representation of the Heisenberg group that allows us to reduce the problem to the study of the twisted Laplacian on the Bochner spaces $L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{2d};X)$. This can be seen as a generalisation of the Stone-von Neumann theorem to UMD lattices $X$ that are not Hilbert spaces.

Relational analysis of the Frauchiger--Renner paradox and interaction-free detection of records from the past

We present an analysis of the Frauchiger-Renner Gedankenexperiment from the point of view of the relational interpretation of quantum mechanics. Our analysis shows that the paradox obtained by Frauchiger and Renner disappears if one rejects promoting one agent's certainty to another agent's certainty when it cannot be validated by records from the past. A by-product of our analysis is an interaction-free detection scheme for the existence of such records.

Convergence in Hölder norms with applications to Monte Carlo methods in infinite dimensions

We show that if a sequence of piecewise affine linear processes converges in the strong sense with a positive rate to a stochastic process which is strongly Hölder continuous in time, then this sequence converges in the strong sense even with respect to much stronger Hölder norms and the convergence rate is essentially reduced by the Hölder exponent. Our first application hereof establishes pathwise convergence rates for spectral Galerkin approximations of stochastic partial differential equations. Our second application derives strong convergence rates of multilevel Monte Carlo approximations of expectations of Banach space valued stochastic processes.

Finite speed of propagation and off-diagonal bounds for Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators in infinite dimensions

We study the Hodge-Dirac operators $\mathcal{D}$ associated with a class of non-symmetric Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators $\mathcal{L}$ in infinite dimensions. For $p\in (1,\infty)$ we prove that $i\mathcal{D}$ generates a $C_0$-group in $L^p$ with respect to the invariant measure if and only if $p=2$ and $\mathcal{L}$ is self-adjoint. An explicit representation of this $C_0$-group in $L^2$ is given and we prove that it has finite speed of propagation. Furthermore we prove $L^2$ off-diagonal estimates for various operators associated with $\mathcal{L}$, both in the self-adjoint and the non-self-adjoint case.

Conical stochastic maximal $L^p$-regularity for $1 \leq p \lt \infty$

Let $A = -{\rm div} \,a(\cdot) \nabla$ be a second order divergence form elliptic operator on $\R^n$ with bounded measurable real-valued coefficients and let $W$ be a cylindrical Brownian motion in a Hilbert space $H$. Our main result implies that the stochastic convolution process $$ u(t) = \int_0^t e^{-(t-s)A}g(s)\,dW(s), \quad t\ge 0,$$ satisfies, for all $1\le p<\infty$, a conical maximal $L^p$-regularity estimate $$\E \n \nabla u \n_{ T_2^{p,2}(\R_+\times\R^n)}^p \le C_p^p \E \n g \n_{ T_2^{p,2}(\R_+\times\R^n;H)}^p.$$ Here, $T_2^{p,2}(\R_+\times\R^n)$ and $T_2^{p,2}(\R_+\times\R^n;H)$ are the parabolic tent spaces of real-valued and $H$-valued functions, respectively. This contrasts with Krylov's maximal $L^p$-regularity estimate $$\E \n \nabla u \n_{L^p(\R_+;L^2(\R^n;\R^n))}^p \le C^p \E \n g \n_{L^p(\R_+;L^2(\R^n;H))}^p$$ which is known to hold only for $2\le p<\infty$, even when $A = -Δ$ and $H = \R$. The proof is based on an $L^2$-estimate and extrapolation arguments which use the fact that $A$ satisfies suitable off-diagonal bounds. Our results are applied to obtain conical stochastic maximal $L^p$-regularity for a class of nonlinear SPDEs with rough initial data.

Maximal gamma-regularity

In this paper we prove maximal regularity estimates in "square function spaces" which are commonly used in harmonic analysis, spectral theory, and stochastic analysis. In particular, they lead to a new class of maximal regularity results for both deterministic and stochastic equations in $L^p$-spaces with $1<p<\infty$. For stochastic equations, the case $1<p<2$ was not covered in the literature so far. Moreover, the "square function spaces" allow initial values with the same roughness as in the $L^2$-setting.

On the R-boundedness of stochastic convolution operators

The $R$-boundedness of certain families of vector-valued stochastic convolution operators with scalar-valued square integrable kernels is the key ingredient in the recent proof of stochastic maximal $L^p$-regularity, $2<p<\infty$, for certain classes of sectorial operators acting on spaces $X=L^q(μ)$, $2\le q<\infty$. This paper presents a systematic study of $R$-boundedness of such families. Our main result generalises the afore-mentioned $R$-boundedness result to a larger class of Banach lattices $X$ and relates it to the $\ell^{1}$-boundedness of an associated class of deterministic convolution operators. We also establish an intimate relationship between the $\ell^{1}$-boundedness of these operators and the boundedness of the $X$-valued maximal function. This analysis leads, quite surprisingly, to an example showing that $R$-boundedness of stochastic convolution operators fails in certain UMD Banach lattices with type $2$.

Second quantisation for skew convolution products of infinitely divisible measures

Suppose $λ_1$ and $λ_2$ are infinitely divisible Radon measures on real Banach spaces $E_1$ and $E_2$, respectively and let $T:E_{1} \rightarrow E_{2}$ be a Borel measurable mapping so that $T(λ_1) * ρ= λ_2 $ for some Radon probability measure $ρ$ on $E_{2}$. Extending previous results for the Gaussian and the Poissonian case, we study the problem of representing the `transition operator' $P_{T}:L^{p}(E_{2}, λ_{2}) \rightarrow L^{p}(E_{1}, λ_{1})$ given by $$ P_{T}f(x) = \int_{E_{2}}f(T(x) + y)dρ(y) %% dρ(y) instead of ρ(dy) in order to unify notations $$ as the second quantisation of a contraction operator acting between suitably chosen `reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces' associated with $λ_1$ and $λ_2$.

The L^p-Poincaré inequality for analytic Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators

Consider the linear stochastic evolution equation dU(t) = AU(t) + dW_H(t), t\ge 0, where A generates a C_0-semigroup on a Banach space E and W_H is a cylindrical Brownian motion in a continuously embedded Hilbert subspace H of E. Under the assumption that the solutions to this equation admit an invariant measure μ_\infty we prove that if the associated Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup is analytic and has compact resolvent, then the Poincaré inequality \n f - \overline f\n_{L^p(E,μ_\infty)} \le \n D_H f\n_{L^p(E,μ_\infty)} holds for all 1<p<\infty. Here \overline f denotes the average of f with respect to μ_\infty and D_H the Fréchet derivative in the direction of H.

Poisson stochastic integration in Banach spaces

We prove new upper and lower bounds for Banach space-valued stochastic integrals with respect to a compensated Poisson random measure. Our estimates apply to Banach spaces with non-trivial martingale (co)type and extend various results in the literature. We also develop a Malliavin framework to interpret Poisson stochastic integrals as vector-valued Skorohod integrals, and prove a Clark-Ocone representation formula.

preprint2013arXiv

Second quantisation for skew convolution products of measures in Banach spaces

We study measures in Banach space which arise as the skew convolution product of two other measures where the convolution is deformed by a skew map. This is the structure that underlies both the theory of Mehler semigroups and operator self-decomposable measures. We show how that given such a set-up the skew map can be lifted to an operator that acts at the level of function spaces and demonstrate that this is an example of the well known functorial procedure of second quantisation. We give particular emphasis to the case where the product measure is infinitely divisible and study the second quantisation process in some detail using chaos expansions when this is either Gaussian or is generated by a Poisson random measure.

Equivalence of laws and null controllability for SPDEs driven by a fractional Brownian motion

We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for equivalence of law for linear stochastic evolution equations driven by a general Gaussian noise by identifying the suitable space of controls for the corresponding deterministic control problem. This result is applied to semilinear (reaction-diffusion) equations driven by a fractional Brownian motion. We establish the equivalence of continuous dependence of laws of solutions to semilinear equations on the initial datum in the topology of pointwise convergence of measures and null controllability for the corresponding deterministic control problem.

Maximal $L^p$-regularity for stochastic evolution equations

We prove maximal $L^p$-regularity for the stochastic evolution equation \[\{{aligned} dU(t) + A U(t)\, dt& = F(t,U(t))\,dt + B(t,U(t))\,dW_H(t), \qquad t\in [0,T], U(0) & = u_0, {aligned}.\] under the assumption that $A$ is a sectorial operator with a bounded $H^\infty$-calculus of angle less than $\frac12π$ on a space $L^q(\mathcal{O},μ)$. The driving process $W_H$ is a cylindrical Brownian motion in an abstract Hilbert space $H$. For $p\in (2,\infty)$ and $q\in [2,\infty)$ and initial conditions $u_0$ in the real interpolation space $\XAp $ we prove existence of unique strong solution with trajectories in \[L^p(0,T;\Dom(A))\cap C([0,T];\XAp),\] provided the non-linearities $F:[0,T]\times \Dom(A)\to L^q(\mathcal{O},μ)$ and $B:[0,T]\times \Dom(A) \to \g(H,\Dom(A^{\frac12}))$ are of linear growth and Lipschitz continuous in their second variables with small enough Lipschitz constants. Extensions to the case where $A$ is an adapted operator-valued process are considered as well. Various applications to stochastic partial differential equations are worked out in detail. These include higher-order and time-dependent parabolic equations and the Navier-Stokes equation on a smooth bounded domain $\OO\subseteq \R^d$ with $d\ge 2$. For the latter, the existence of a unique strong local solution with values in $(H^{1,q}(\OO))^d$ is shown.

Stochastic evolution equations driven by Liouville fractional Brownian motion

Let H be a Hilbert space and E a Banach space. We set up a theory of stochastic integration of L(H,E)-valued functions with respect to H-cylindrical Liouville fractional Brownian motions (fBm) with arbitrary Hurst parameter in the interval (0,1). For Hurst parameters in (0,1/2) we show that a function F:(0,T)\to L(H,E) is stochastically integrable with respect to an H-cylindrical Liouville fBm if and only if it is stochastically integrable with respect to an H-cylindrical fBm with the same Hurst parameter. As an application we show that second-order parabolic SPDEs on bounded domains in \mathbb{R}^d, driven by space-time noise which is white in space and Liouville fractional in time with Hurst parameter in (d/4,1) admit mild solution which are Hölder continuous both and space.

Stochastic maximal $L^p$-regularity

In this article we prove a maximal $L^p$-regularity result for stochastic convolutions, which extends Krylov's basic mixed $L^p(L^q)$-inequality for the Laplace operator on ${\mathbb{R}}^d$ to large classes of elliptic operators, both on ${\mathbb{R}}^d$ and on bounded domains in ${\mathbb{R}}^d$ with various boundary conditions. Our method of proof is based on McIntosh's $H^{\infty}$-functional calculus, $R$-boundedness techniques and sharp $L^p(L^q)$-square function estimates for stochastic integrals in $L^q$-spaces. Under an additional invertibility assumption on $A$, a maximal space--time $L^p$-regularity result is obtained as well.

The stochastic Weiss conjecture for bounded analytic semigroups

Suppose -A admits a bounded H-infinity calculus of angle less than pi/2 on a Banach space E with Pisier's property (alpha), let B be a bounded linear operator from a Hilbert space H into the extrapolation space E_{-1} of E with respect to A, and let W_H denote an H-cylindrical Brownian motion. Let gamma(H,E) denote the space of all gamma-radonifying operators from H to E. We prove that the following assertions are equivalent: (i) the stochastic Cauchy problem dU(t) = AU(t)dt + BdW_H(t) admits an invariant measure on E; (ii) (-A)^{-1/2} B belongs to gamma(H,E); (iii) the Gaussian sum \sum_{n\in\mathbb{Z}} γ_n 2^{n/2} R(2^n,A)B converges in gamma(H,E) in probability. This solves the stochastic Weiss conjecture proposed recently by the second and third named authors.

A maximal inequality for stochastic convolutions in 2-smooth Banach spaces

Let (e^{tA})_{t \geq 0} be a C_0-contraction semigroup on a 2-smooth Banach space E, let (W_t)_{t \geq 0} be a cylindrical Brownian motion in a Hilbert space H, and let (g_t)_{t \geq 0} be a progressively measurable process with values in the space γ(H,E) of all γ-radonifying operators from H to E. We prove that for all 0<p<\infty there exists a constant C, depending only on p and E, such that for all T \geq 0 we have \E \sup_{0\le t\le T} || \int_0^t e^{(t-s)A} g_s dW_s \ ||^p \leq C \mathbb{E} (\int_0^T || g_t ||_{γ(H,E)}^2 dt)^\frac{p}{2}. For p \geq 2 the proof is based on the observation that ψ(x) = || x ||^p is Fréchet differentiable and its derivative satisfies the Lipschitz estimate || ψ'(x) - ψ'(y)|| \leq C(|| x || + || y ||)^{p-2} || x-y ||; the extension to 0<p<2 proceeds via Lenglart's inequality.

Approximating the coefficients in semilinear stochastic partial differential equations

We investigate, in the setting of UMD Banach spaces E, the continuous dependence on the data A, F, G and X_0 of mild solutions of semilinear stochastic evolution equations with multiplicative noise of the form dX(t) = [AX(t) + F(t,X(t))]dt + G(t,X(t))dW_H(t), X(0)=X_0, where W_H is a cylindrical Brownian motion on a Hilbert space H. We prove continuous dependence of the compensated solutions X(t)-e^{tA}X_0 in the norms L^p(Ω;C^λ([0,T];E)) assuming that the approximating operators A_n are uniformly sectorial and converge to A in the strong resolvent sense, and that the approximating nonlinearities F_n and G_n are uniformly Lipschitz continuous in suitable norms and converge to F and G pointwise. Our results are applied to a class of semilinear parabolic SPDEs with finite-dimensional multiplicative noise.

Gradient estimates and domain identification for analytic Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators

Let (P(t)) be the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup associated with the stochastic Cauchy problem dU(t) = AU(t)dt + dW_H(t), where A is the generator of a C_0-semigroup (S(t)) on a Banach space E, H is a Hilbert subspace of E, and (W_H(t)) is an H-cylindrical Brownian motion. Assuming that (S(t)) restricts to a C_0-semigroup on H, we obtain L^p-bounds for the gradient D_H P(t). We show that if (P(t)) is analytic, then the invariance assumption is fulfilled. As an application we determine the L^p-domain of the generator of (P(t)) explicitly in the case where (S(t)) restricts to a C_0-semigroup on H which is similar to an analytic contraction semigroup. The results are applied to the 1D stochastic heat equation driven by additive space-time white noise.

Uniformly gamma-radonifying families of operators and and the stochastic Weiss conjecture

We introduce the notion of uniform gamma-radonification of a family of operators, which unifies the notions of R-boundedness of a family of operators and gamma-radonification of an individual operator. We study the the properties of uniformly gamma-radonifying families of operators in detail and apply our results to the stochastic abstract Cauchy problem $dU(t) = AU(t) dt + B dW(t); U(0) = 0$ Here, $A$ is the generator of a strongly continuous semigroup of operators on a Banach space $E$, $B$ is a bounded linear operator from a separable Hilbert space $H$ into $E$, and $W$ is an $H$-cylindrical Brownian motion. When $A$ and $B$ are simultaneously diagonalisable, we prove that an invariant measure exists if and only if the family $ \{\sqrtλ R(λ, A)B : λ> 0\} $ is uniformly gamma-radonifying. This result can be viewed as a partial solution of a stochastic version of the Weiss conjecture in linear systems theory.

Convergence rates of the splitting scheme for parabolic linear stochastic Cauchy problems

We study the splitting scheme associated with the linear stochastic Cauchy problem dU(t) = AU(t) dt + dW(t), where A is the generator of an analytic C_0-semigroup S={S(t)} on a Banach space E and W={W(t)} is a Brownian motion with values in a fractional domain space E_\b associated with A. We prove that if \a,\b,\g,þ\ge 0 are such that \g + þ< 1 and max[0,(\a-\b+þ)] + \g < 1/2, then the approximate solutions U_n (where n is the number of time steps) converge to the solution U in the Holder space C^\g([0,T];E_\a), both in L^p-means and almost surely, with rate 1/n^þ.

Non-tangential maximal functions and conical square functions with respect to the Gaussian measure

We study, in $L^{1}(\R^n;γ)$ with respect to the gaussian measure, non-tangential maximal functions and conical square functions associated with the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operator by developing a set of techniques which allow us, to some extent, to compensate for the non-doubling character of the gaussian measure. The main result asserts that conical square functions can be controlled in $L^1$-norm by non-tangential maximal functions. Along the way we prove a change of aperture result for the latter. This complements recent results on gaussian Hardy spaces due to Mauceri and Meda.

Second quantization and the L^p-spectrum of nonsymmetric Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators

The spectra of the second quantization and the symmetric second quantization of a strict Hilbert space contraction are computed explicitly and shown to coincide. As an application, we compute the spectrum of the nonsymmetric Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operator $L$ associated with the infinite-dimensional Langevin equation $$ dU(t) = AU(t)dt + dW(t), $$ where $A$ is the generator of a strongly continuous semigroup on a Banach space $E$ and $W$ is a cylindrical Wiener process in $E$. In the case of a finite-dimensional space $E$ we recover the recent Metafune-Pallara-Priola formula for the spectrum of $L$.
