Pointwise ergodic theorems for non-conventional bilinear polynomial averages

We establish convergence in norm and pointwise almost everywhere for the non-conventional (in the sense of Furstenberg) bilinear polynomial ergodic averages \[ A_N(f,g)(x) := \frac{1}{N} \sum_{n =1}^N f(T^nx) g(T^{P(n)}x)\] as $N \to \infty$, where $T \colon X \to X$ is a measure-preserving transformation of a $σ$-finite measure space $(X,μ)$, $P(\mathrm{n}) \in \mathbb Z[\mathrm{n}]$ is a polynomial of degree $d \geq 2$, and $f \in L^{p_1}(X), \ g \in L^{p_2}(X)$ for some $p_1,p_2 > 1$ with $\frac{1}{p_1} + \frac{1}{p_2} \leq 1$. We also establish an $r$-variational inequality for these averages (at lacunary scales) in the optimal range $r > 2$. We are also able to "break duality" by handling some ranges of exponents $p_1,p_2$ with $\frac{1}{p_1}+\frac{1}{p_2} > 1$, at the cost of increasing $r$ slightly. This gives an affirmative answer to Problem 11 from Frantzikinakis' open problems survey for the Furstenberg--Weiss averages (with $P(\mathrm{n})=\mathrm{n}^2$), which is a bilinear variant of Question 9 considered by Bergelson in his survey on Ergodic Ramsey Theory from 1996. This also gives a contribution to the Furstenberg-Bergelson-Leibman conjecture. Our methods combine techniques from harmonic analysis with the recent inverse theorems of Peluse and Prendiville in additive combinatorics. At large scales, the harmonic analysis of the adelic integers $\mathbb A_{\mathbb Z}$ also plays a role.

Polynomial averages and pointwise ergodic theorems on nilpotent groups

We establish pointwise almost everywhere convergence for ergodic averages along polynomial sequences in nilpotent groups of step two of measure-preserving transformations on $σ$-finite measure spaces. We also establish corresponding maximal inequalities on $L^p$ for $1<p\leq \infty$ and $ρ$-variational inequalities on $L^2$ for $2<ρ<\infty$. This gives an affirmative answer to the Furstenberg-Bergelson-Leibman conjecture in the linear case for all polynomial ergodic averages in discrete nilpotent groups of step two. Our proof is based on almost-orthogonality techniques that go far beyond Fourier transform tools, which are not available in the non-commutative, nilpotent setting. In particular, we develop what we call a nilpotent circle method that allows us to adapt some of the ideas of the classical circle method to the setting of nilpotent groups.

Polynomial sequences in discrete nilpotent groups of step 2

We discuss some of our work on averages along polynomial sequences in nilpotent groups of step 2. Our main results include boundedness of associated maximal functions and singular integrals operators, an almost everywhere pointwise convergence theorem for ergodic averages along polynomial sequences, and a nilpotent Waring theorem. Our proofs are based on analytical tools, such as a nilpotent Weyl inequality, and on complex almost-orthogonality arguments that are designed to replace Fourier transform tools, which are not available in the non-commutative nilpotent setting. In particular, we present what we call a "nilpotent circle method" that allows us to adapt some of the ideas of the classical circle method to the setting of nilpotent groups.

Dimension-free estimates for the discrete spherical maximal functions

We prove that the discrete spherical maximal functions (in the spirit of Magyar, Stein and Wainger) corresponding to the Euclidean spheres in $\mathbb Z^d$ with dyadic radii have $\ell^p(\mathbb Z^d)$ bounds for all $p\in[2, \infty]$ independent of the dimensions $d\ge 5$. An important part of our argument is the asymptotic formula in the Waring problem for the squares with a dimension-free multiplicative error term. By considering new approximating multipliers we will show how to absorb an exponential in dimension (like $C^d$ for some $C>1$) growth in norms arising from the sampling principle of Magyar, Stein and Wainger, and ultimately deduce dimension-free estimates for the discrete spherical maximal functions.

A bootstrapping approach to jump inequalities and their applications

The aim of this paper is to present an abstract and general approach to jump inequalities in harmonic analysis. Our principal conclusion is the refinement of $r$-variational estimates, previously known for $r>2$, to end-point results for the jump quasi-seminorm corresponding to $r=2$. This is applied to the dimension-free results recently obtained by the first two authors in collaboration with Bourgain and Wróbel (arXiv:1708.04639 and arXiv:1804.07679), and also to operators of Radon type treated by Jones, Seeger, and Wright.

A local $T(b)$ theorem for perfect multilinear Calderón-Zygmund operators

We prove a multilinear local $T(b)$ theorem that differs from previously considered multilinear local $T(b)$ theorems in using exclusively general testing functions $b$ as opposed to a mix of general testing functions and indicator functions. The main new feature is a set of relations between the various testing functions $b$ that to our knowledge has not been observed in the literature and is necessitated by our approach. For simplicity we restrict attention to the perfect dyadic model.

On the Hardy--Littlewood majorant problem for arithmetic sets

The aim of this paper is to exhibit a wide class of sparse deterministic sets, $\mathbf B \subseteq \mathbb{N}$, so that \[ \limsup_{N \to \infty} N^{-1}|\mathbf B \cap [1,N]|= 0, \] for which the Hardy--Littlewood majorant property holds: \[ \sup_{|a_n|\le 1} \Big\| \sum_{n\in\mathbf B\cap[1, N]} a_n e^{2 πi n ξ}\Big \|_{L^p(\mathbb{T}, {\mathrm d} ξ)} \leq \mathbf{C}_p \Big\| \sum_{n\in\mathbf B\cap[1, N]} e^{2 πi n ξ} \Big\|_{L^p(\mathbb{T}, {\mathrm d} ξ)}, \] where $p \geq p_{\mathbf{B}}$ is sufficiently large, the implicit constant $\mathbf{C}_p$ is independent of $N$, and the supremum is taken over all complex sequences $ (a_n : n \in \mathbb{N})$ such that $|a_n| \leq 1$.

$\ell^p(\mathbb{Z})$ -- boundedness of discrete maximal functions along thin subsets of primes and pointwise ergodic theorems

We establish the first pointwise ergodic theorems along thin sets of prime numbers; a set with zero density with respect to the primes. For instance we will be able to achieve this with the Piatetski-Shapiro primes. Our methods will be robust enough to solve the ternary Goldbach problem for some thin sets of primes.

Discrete maximal functions in higher dimensions and applications to ergodic theory

We establish a higher dimensional counterpart of Bourgain's pointwise ergodic theorem along an arbitrary integer-valued polynomial mapping. We achieve this by proving variational estimates $V_r$ on $L^p$ spaces for all $1<p<\infty$ and $r>\max\{p, p/(p-1)\}$. Moreover, we obtain the estimates which are uniform in the coefficients of a polynomial mapping of fixed degree.

Roth's Theorem in the Piatetski-Shapiro primes

Let $\mathbf{P}$ denote the set of prime numbers and, for an appropriate function $h$, define a set $\mathbf{P}_{h}=\{p\in\mathbf{P}: \exists_{n\in\mathbb{N}}\ p=\lfloor h(n)\rfloor\}$. The aim of this paper is to show that every subset of $\mathbf{P}_{h}$ having positive relative upper density contains a nontrivial three-term arithmetic progression. In particular the set of Piatetski--Shapiro primes of fixed type $71/72<γ<1$, i.e. $\{p\in\mathbf{P}: \exists_{n\in\mathbb{N}}\ p=\lfloor n^{1/γ}\rfloor\}$ has this feature. We show this by proving the counterpart of Bourgain--Green's restriction theorem for the set $\mathbf{P}_{h}$.

Weak type (1, 1) inequalities for discrete rough maximal functions

The aim of this paper is to show that the discrete maximal function $$\mathcal{M}_{h}f(x)=\sup_{N\in\mathbb{N}}\frac{1}{|\mathbf{N}_{h}\cap[1, N]|}\Big|\sum_{n\in \mathbf{N}_{h}\cap[1, N]}f(x-n)\Big|,\ \ \mbox{for $x\in\mathbb{Z}$},$$ is of weak type $(1, 1)$, where $\mathbf{N}_{h}=\{n\in\mathbb{N}: \exists_{m\in\mathbb{N}}\ n=\lfloor h(m)\rfloor\}$ for an appropriate function $h$. As a consequence we also obtain pointwise ergodic theorem along the set $\mathbf{N}_{h}$.

Asymptotics of stationary solutions of multivariate stochastic recursions with heavy tailed inputs and related limit theorems

Let $Φ_n$ be an i.i.d. sequence of Lipschitz mappings of $\R^d$. We study the Markov chain $\{X_n^x\}_{n=0}^\infty$ on $\R^d$ defined by the recursion $X_n^x = Φ_n(X^x_{n-1})$, $n\in\N$, $X_0^x=x\in\R^d$. We assume that $Φ_n(x)=Φ(A_n x,B_n(x))$ for a fixed continuous function $Φ:\R^d\times \R^d\to\R^d$, commuting with dilations and i.i.d random pairs $(A_n,B_n)$, where $A_n\in {End}(\R^d)$ and $B_n$ is a continuous mapping of $\R^d$. Moreover, $B_n$ is $α$-regularly varying and $A_n$ has a faster decay at infinity than $B_n$. We prove that the stationary measure $ν$ of the Markov chain $\{X_n^x\}$ is $α$-regularly varying. Using this result we show that, if $α<2$, the partial sums $S_n^x=\sum_{k=1}^n X_k^x$, appropriately normalized, converge to an $α$-stable random variable. In particular, we obtain new results concerning the random coefficient autoregressive process $X_n = A_n X_{n-1}+B_n$.

On fixed points of a generalized multidimensional affine recursion

Let $G$ be a multiplicative subsemigroup of the general linear group $\Gl(\mathbb{R}^d)$ which consists of matrices with positive entries such that every column and every row contains a strictly positive element. Given a $G$--valued random matrix $A$, we consider the following generalized multidimensional affine equation R\stackrel{\mathcal{D}}{=}\sum_{i=1}^N A_iR_i+B, where $N\ge2$ is a fixed natural number, $A_1,...,A_N$ are independent copies of $A$, $B\in\mathbb{R}^d$ is a random vector with positive entries, and $R_1,...,R_N$ are independent copies of $R\in\mathbb{R}^d$, which have also positive entries. Moreover, all of them are mutually independent and $\stackrel{\mathcal{D}}{=}$ stands for the equality in distribution. We will show with the aid of spectral theory developed by Guivarc'h and Le Page and Kesten's renewal theorem, that under appropriate conditions, there exists $χ>0$ such that $¶(\{<R, u>>t\})\asymp t^{-χ},$ as $t\to\8$, for every unit vector $u\in\mathbb{S}^{d-1}$ with positive entries.

Heavy tail phenomenon and convergence to stable laws for iterated Lipschitz maps

We consider the Markov chain $\{X_n^x\}_{n=0}^\infty$ on $\R^d$ defined by the stochastic recursion $X_{n}^{x}=\p_{θ_{n}}(X_{n-1}^{x})$, starting at $x\in\R^d$, where $θ_{1}, θ_{2},...$ are i.i.d. random variables taking their values in a metric space $(Θ, \mathfrak{r}),$ and $\p_{θ_{n}}:\R^d\mapsto\R^d$ are Lipschitz maps. Assume that the Markov chain has a unique stationary measure $ν$. Under appropriate assumptions on $\p_{θ_n}$, we will show that the measure $ν$ has a heavy tail with the exponent $α>0$ i.e. $ν(\{x\in\R^d: |x|>t\})\asymp t^{-α}$. Using this result we show that properly normalized Birkhoff sums $S_n^x=\sum_{k=1}^n X_k^x$, converge in law to an $α$--stable law for $α\in(0, 2]$.
