A compact $G_2$-calibrated manifold with first Betti number $b_1=1$

We construct a compact formal 7-manifold with a closed $G_2$-structure and with first Betti number $b_1=1$, which does not admit any torsion-free $G_2$-structure, that is, it does not admit any $G_2$-structure such that the holonomy group of the associated metric is a subgroup of $G_2$. We also construct associative calibrated (hence volume-minimizing) 3-tori with respect to this closed $G_2$-structure and, for each of those 3-tori, we show a 3-dimensional family of non-trivial associative deformations. We also construct a fibration of our 7-manifold over $S^2\times S^1$ with generic fiber a (non-calibrated) coassociative 4-torus and some singular fibers.

A non Ricci-flat Einstein pseudo-Riemannian metric on a 7-dimensional nilmanifold

We answer in the affirmative the question posed by Conti and Rossi on the existence of nilpotent Lie algebras of dimension 7 with an Einstein pseudo-metric of nonzero scalar curvature. Indeed, we construct a left-invariant pseudo-Riemannian metric $g$ of signature $(3, 4)$ on a nilpotent Lie group of dimension 7, such that $g$ is Einstein and not Ricci-flat. We show that the pseudo-metric $g$ cannot be induced by any left-invariant closed $G_2^*$-structure on the Lie group. Moreover, some results on closed and harmonic $G_2^*$-structures on an arbitrary 7-manifold $M$ are given. In particular, we prove that the underlying pseudo-Riemannian metric of a closed and harmonic $G_2^*$-structure on $M$ is not necessarily Einstein, but if it is Einstein then it is Ricci-flat.

Exact $G_2$-structures on unimodular Lie algebras

We consider seven-dimensional unimodular Lie algebras $\mathfrak{g}$ admitting exact $G_2$-structures, focusing our attention on those with vanishing third Betti number $b_3(\mathfrak{g})$. We discuss some examples, both in the case when $b_2(\mathfrak{g})\neq0$, and in the case when the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ is (2,3)-trivial, i.e., when both $b_2(\mathfrak{g})$ and $b_3(\mathfrak{g})$ vanish. These examples are solvable, as $b_3(\mathfrak{g})=0$, but they are not strongly unimodular, a necessary condition for the existence of lattices on the simply connected Lie group corresponding to $\mathfrak{g}$. More generally, we prove that any seven-dimensional (2,3)-trivial strongly unimodular Lie algebra does not admit any exact $G_2$-structure. From this, it follows that there are no compact examples of the form $(Γ\backslash G,φ)$, where $G$ is a seven-dimensional simply connected Lie group with (2,3)-trivial Lie algebra, $Γ\subset G$ is a co-compact discrete subgroup, and $φ$ is an exact $G_2$-structure on $Γ\backslash G$ induced by a left-invariant one on $G$.

Einstein almost cokähler manifolds

We study an odd-dimensional analogue of the Goldberg conjecture for compact Einstein almost Kähler manifolds. We give an explicit non-compact example of an Einstein almost cokähler manifold that is not cokähler. We prove that compact Einstein almost cokähler manifolds with non-negative $*$-scalar curvature are cokähler (indeed, transversely Calabi-Yau); more generally, we give a lower and upper bound for the $*$-scalar curvature in the case that the structure is not cokähler. We prove similar bounds for almost Kähler Einstein manifolds that are not Kähler.

Homotopic properties of Kähler orbifolds

We prove the formality and the evenness of odd-degree Betti numbers for compact Kähler orbifolds, by adapting the classical proofs for Kähler manifolds. As a consequence, we obtain examples of symplectic orbifolds not admitting any Kähler orbifold structure. We also review the known examples of non-formal simply connected Sasakian manifolds, and produce an example of a non-formal quasi-regular Sasakian manifold with Betti numbers $b_1=0$ and $b_2\,> 1$.

Formality and the Lefschetz property in symplectic and cosymplectic geometry

We review topological properties of Kähler and symplectic manifolds, and of their odd-dimensional counterparts, coKähler and cosymplectic manifolds. We focus on formality, Lefschetz property and parity of Betti numbers, also distinguishing the simply-connected case (in the Kähler/symplectic situation) and the $b_1=1$ case (in the coKähler/cosymplectic situation).

Formality of 7-dimensional 3-Sasakian manifolds

We prove that any simply connected compact 3-Sasakian manifold, of dimension seven, is formal if and only if its second Betti number is $b_2<2$. In the opposite, we show an example of a 7-dimensional Sasaki-Einstein manifold, with second Betti number $b_2\geq 2$, which is formal. Therefore, such an example does not admit any 3-Sasakian structure. Examples of 7-dimensional simply connected compact formal Sasakian manifolds, with $b_2\geq 2$, are also given.

Laplacian flow of closed $G_2$-structures inducing nilsolitons

We study the existence of left invariant closed $G_2$-structures defining a Ricci soliton metric on simply connected nonabelian nilpotent Lie groups. For each one of these $G_2$-structures, we show long time existence and uniqueness of solution for the Laplacian flow on the noncompact manifold. Moreover, considering the Laplacian flow on the associated Lie algebra as a bracket flow on $\R^7$ in a similar way as in [23] we prove that the underlying metrics $g(t)$ of the solution converge smoothly, up to pull-back by time-dependent diffeomorphisms, to a flat metric, uniformly on compact sets in the nilpotent Lie group, as $t$ goes to infinity.

Locally conformal calibrated $G_2$-manifolds

We study conditions for which the mapping torus of a 6-manifold endowed with an $SU(3)$-structure is a locally conformal calibrated $G_2$-manifold, that is, a 7-manifold endowed with a $G_2$-structure $φ$ such that $d φ= - θ\wedge φ$ for a closed non-vanishing 1-form $θ$. Moreover, we show that if $(M, φ)$ is a compact locally conformal calibrated $G_2$-manifold with $\mathcal{L}_{θ^{\#}} φ=0$, where ${θ^{\#}}$ is the dual of $θ$ with respect to the Riemannian metric $g_φ$ induced by $φ$, then $M$ is a fiber bundle over $S^1$ with a coupled $SU(3)$-manifold as fiber.

A $6$-dimensional simply connected complex and symplectic manifold with no Kähler metric

We construct a simply connected compact manifold which has complex and symplectic structures but does not admit Kähler metrics, in the lowest possible dimension where this can happen, that is, dimension 6. Such a manifold is automatically formal and has even odd-degree Betti numbers but it does not satisfy the Lefschetz property for any symplectic form.

preprint2014arXiv

Non-formal co-symplectic manifolds

We study the formality of the mapping torus of an orientation-preserving diffeomorphism of a manifold. In particular, we give conditions under which a mapping torus has a non-zero Massey product. As an application we prove that there are non-formal compact co-symplectic manifolds of dimension $m$ and with first Betti number $b$ if and only if $m=3$ and $b \geq 2$, or $m \geq 5$ and $b \geq 1$. Explicit examples for each one of these cases are given.

G_2-structures on Einstein solvmanifolds

We study the $G_2$ analogue of the Goldberg conjecture on non-compact solvmanifolds. In contrast to the almost-Kähler case we prove that a 7-dimensional solvmanifold cannot admit any left-invariant calibrated $G_2$-structure $φ$ such that the induced metric $g_φ$ is Einstein, unless $g_φ$ is flat. We give an example of 7-dimensional solvmanifold admitting a left-invariant calibrated $G_2$-structure $φ$ such that $g_φ$ is Ricci-soliton. Moreover, we show that a 7-dimensional (non-flat) Einstein solvmanifold $(S,g)$ cannot admit any left-invariant cocalibrated $G_2$-structure $φ$ such that the induced metric $g_φ = g$.

On seven dimensional quaternionic contact solvable Lie groups

We answer in the affirmative a question posed by Ivanov and Vassilev on the existence of a seven dimensional quaternionic contact manifold with closed fundamental 4-form and non-vanishing torsion endomorphism. Moreover, we show an approach to the classification of seven dimensional solvable Lie groups having an integrable left invariant quaternionic contact structure. In particular, we prove that the unique seven dimensional nilpotent Lie group admitting such a structure is the quaternionic Heisenberg group.

preprint2011arXiv

Nilmanifolds with a calibrated G_2-structure

We introduce obstructions to the existence of a calibrated G_2-structure on a Lie algebra g of dimension seven, not necessarily nilpotent. In particular, we prove that if there is a Lie algebra epimorphism from g to a six-dimensional Lie algebra h with kernel contained in the center of g, then h has a symplectic form. As a consequence, we obtain a classification of the nilpotent Lie algebras that admit a calibrated G_2-structure.

Quaternionic Kaehler and Spin(7) metrics arising from quaternionic contact Einstein structures

We construct left invariant quaternionic contact (qc) structures on Lie groups with zero and non-zero torsion and with non-vanishing quaternionic contact conformal curvature tensor, thus showing the existence of non-flat quaternionic contact manifolds. We prove that the product of the real line with a seven dimensional manifold, equipped with a certain qc structure, has a quaternionic Kaehler metric as well as a metric with holonomy contained in Spin(7). As a consequence we determine explicit quaternionic Kaehler metrics and Spin(7)-holonomy metrics which seem to be new. Moreover, we give explicit non-compact eight dimensional almost quaternion hermitian manifolds with either a closed fundamental four form or fundamental two forms defining a differential ideal that are not quaternionic Kaehler.

Nearly hypo structures and compact Nearly Kähler 6-manifolds with conical singularities

We prove that any totally geodesic hypersurface $N^5$ of a 6-dimensional nearly Kähler manifold $M^6$ is a Sasaki-Einstein manifold, and so it has a hypo structure in the sense of \cite{ConS}. We show that any Sasaki-Einstein 5-manifold defines a nearly Kähler structure on the sin-cone $N^5\times\mathbb R$, and a compact nearly Kähler structure with conical singularities on $N^5\times [0,π]$ when $N^5$ is compact thus providing a link between Calabi-Yau structure on the cone $N^5\times [0,π]$ and the nearly Kähler structure on the sin-cone $N^5\times [0,π]$. We define the notion of {\it nearly hypo} structure that leads to a general construction of nearly Kähler structure on $N^5\times\mathbb R$. We determine {\it double hypo} structure as the intersection of hypo and nearly hypo structures and classify double hypo structures on 5-dimensional Lie algebras with non-zero first Betti number. An extension of the concept of nearly Kähler structure is introduced, which we refer to as {\it nearly half flat} SU(3)-structure, that leads us to generalize the construction of nearly parallel $G_2$-structures on $M^6\times\mathbb R$ given in \cite{BM}. For $N^5=S^5\subset S^6$ and for $N^5=S^2 \times S^3\subset S^3 \times S^3$, we describe explicitly a Sasaki-Einstein hypo structure as well as the corresponding nearly Kähler structures on $N^5\times\mathbb R$ and $N^5\times [0,π]$, and the nearly parallel $G_2$-structures on $N^5\times\mathbb R^2$ and $(N^5\times [0,π])\times [0,π]$.
