The CR Almost Schur Lemma and the positivity conditions

We establish a new version of the CR almost Schur Lemma which gives an estimation of the pseudohermitian scalar curvature on a compact strictly pseudoconvex pseudohermitian manifold to be a constant in terms of the norm of the traceless Webster Ricci tensor and the pseudohermitian torsion under a certain positivity condition. In the torsion-free case, i.e. for a compact Sasakian manifold, our positivity condition coincides with the known one and we obtain a better estimate

Non-symmetric Riemannian gravity and Sasaki-Einstein 5-manifolds

We show that a connection with skew-symmetric torsion satisfying the Einstein metricity condition exists on an almost contact metric manifold exactly when it is D-homothetic to a cosymplectic manifold. In dimension five, we get that the existence of a connection with skew torsion satisfying the Einstein metricity condition is equivalent to the existence of a Sasaki-Einstein 5-manifold and vice versa, any Sasaki-Einstein 5-manifold generates a two parametric family of connections with skew torsion satisfying the Einstein metricity condition. Formulas for the curvature and the Ricci tensors of these connections are presented in terms of the Sasaki-Einstein SU(2) structures.

Non-umbilical quaternionic contact hypersurfaces in hyper-Kähler manifolds

We show that any compact quaternionic contact (qc) hypersurfaces in a hyper-Kähler manifold which is not totally umbilical has an induced qc structure, locally qc homothetic to the standard 3-Sasakian sphere. We also show that any nowhere umbilical qc hypersurface in a hyper-Kähler manifold is endowed with an involutive 7-dimensional distribution whose integral leafs are locally qc-conformal to the standard 3-Sasakian sphere.

Connections on non-symmetric (generalized) Riemannian manifold and gravity

Connections with (skew-symmetric) torsion on non-symmetric Riemannian manifold satisfying the Einstein metricity condition (NGT with torsion) are considered. It is shown that an almost Hermitian manifold is an NGT with torsion if and only if it is a Nearly Kähler manifold. In the case of an almost contact metric manifold the NGT with torsion spaces are characterized and a possibly new class of almost contact metric manifolds is extracted. Similar considerations lead to a definition of a particular classes of almost para-Hermitian and almost paracontact metric manifolds. The conditions are given in terms of the corresponding Nijenhuis tensors and the exterior derivative of the skew-symmetric part of the non-symmetric Riemannian metric.

Formality of 7-dimensional 3-Sasakian manifolds

We prove that any simply connected compact 3-Sasakian manifold, of dimension seven, is formal if and only if its second Betti number is $b_2<2$. In the opposite, we show an example of a 7-dimensional Sasaki-Einstein manifold, with second Betti number $b_2\geq 2$, which is formal. Therefore, such an example does not admit any 3-Sasakian structure. Examples of 7-dimensional simply connected compact formal Sasakian manifolds, with $b_2\geq 2$, are also given.

The Lichnerowicz and Obata first eigenvalue theorems and the Obata uniqueness result in the Yamabe problem on CR and quaternionic contact manifolds

We report on some aspects and recent progress in certain problems in the sub-Riemannian CR and quaternionic contact (QC) geometries. The focus are the corresponding Yamabe problems on the round spheres, the Lichnerowicz-Obata first eigenvalue estimates, and the relation between these two problems. A motivation from the Riemannian case highlights new and old ideas which are then developed in the settings of Iwasawa sub-Riemannian geometries.

Non-Kaehler Heterotic String Solutions with non-zero fluxes and non-constant dilaton

Conformally compact and complete smooth solutions to the Strominger system with non vanishing flux, non-trivial instanton and non-constant dilaton using the first Pontrjagin form of the (-)-connection} on 6-dimensional non-Kaehler nilmanifold are presented. In the conformally compact case the dilaton is determined by the real slices of the elliptic Weierstrass function. The dilaton of non-compact complete solutions is given by the fundamental solution of the Laplacian on $R^4$.

Quaternionic contact hypersurfaces in hyper-Kähler manifolds

We describe explicitly all quaternionic contact hypersurfaces (qc-hypersurfaces) in the flat quaternion space $\Hnn$ and the quaternion projective space. We show that up to a quaternionic affine transformation a qc-hypersurface in $\Hnn$ is contained in one of the three qc-hyperquadrics in $\Hnn$. Moreover, we show that an embedded qc-hypersurface in a hyper-Kähler manifold is qc-conformal to a qc-Einstein space and the Riemannian curvature tensor of the ambient hyper-Kähler metric is degenerate along the hypersurface.

Sasaki-like almost contact complex Riemannian manifolds

A Sasaki-like almost contact complex Riemannian manifold is defined as an almost contact complex Riemannian manifold which complex cone is a holomorphic complex Riemannian manifold. Explicit compact and non-compact examples are given. A canonical construction producing a Sasaki-like almost contact complex Riemannian manifold from a holomorphic complex Riemannian manifold is presented and called an $S^1$-solvable extension.

The quaternionic Heisenberg group and Heterotic String Solutions with non-constant dilaton in dimensions 7 and 5

New smooth solutions of the Strominger system with non vanishing flux, non-trivial instanton and non-constant dilaton based on the quaternionic Heisenberg group are constructed. We show that through appropriate contractions the solutions found in the $G_2$-heterotic case converge to the heterotic solutions on 6-dimensional inner non-Kähler spaces previously found by the authors and, moreover, to new heterotic solutions with non-constant dilaton in dimension 5. All solutions satisfy the heterotic equations of motion up to the first order of $α^{\prime}$.

The Obata sphere theorems on a quaternionic contact manifold of dimension bigger than seven

We prove a quaternionic contact versions of the Obata's sphere theorems. We show that if the first positive eigenvalue of the sub-Laplacian on a compact qc manifold of dimension bigger than seven takes the smallest possible value then, up to a homothety of the qc structure, the manifold is qc equivalent to the standard 3-Sasakian sphere. We also give a version of the theorem on non-compact qc manifold which is complete with respect to the associated Riemannian metric using the existence of a function with traceless horizontal Hessian. A qc version of the Liouville theorem is shown for qc-conformal maps between open connected sets of the 3-Sasakian sphere.

An Obata type result for the first eigenvalue of the sub-Laplacian on a CR manifold with a divergence free torsion

We prove a CR Obata type result that if the first positive eigenvalue of the sub-Laplacian on a compact strictly pseudoconvex pseudohermitian manifold with a divergence free pseudohermitian torsion takes the smallest possible value then, up to a homothety of the pseudohermitian structure, the manifold is the standart Sasakian unit sphere. We also give a version of this theorem using the existence of a function with traceless horizontal Hessian on a complete, with respect to Webster's metric, pseudohermitian manifold.

An Obata-type theorem on a three-dimensional CR manifold

We prove a CR version of the Obata's result for the first eigenvalue of the sub-Laplacian in the setting of a compact strictly pseudoconvex pseudohermitian three dimensional manifold with non-negative CR-Panietz operator which satisfies a Lichnerowicz type condition. We show that if the first positive eigenvalue of the sub-Laplacian takes the smallest possible value then, up to a homothety of the pseudohermitian structure, the manifold is the standard Sasakian three dimensional unit sphere.

The sharp lower bound of the first eigenvalue of the sub-Laplacian on a quaternionic contact manifold in dimension seven

A version of Lichnerowicz' theorem giving a lower bound of the eigenvalues of the sub-Laplacian under a lower bound on the Sp(1)Sp(1) component of the qc-Ricci curvature on a compact seven dimensional quaternionic contact manifold is established. It is shown that in the case of a seven dimensional compact 3-Sasakian manifold the lower bound is reached if and only if the quaternionic contact manifold is a round 3-Sasakian sphere.

Vanishing theorems on (l|k)-strong Kaehler manifolds with torsion

We derive sufficient conditions for the vanishing of plurigenera, $p_m(J), m>0$, on compact (l|k)-strong, $ω^l\wedge \partial\bar\partial ω^k=0$, Kaehler manifolds with torsion. In particular, we show that the plurigenera of compact (l|k)-strong manifolds, k<n-1, for which the holonomy of the unique Hermitian connection with skew-symmetric torsion is contained in SU(n) vanish. As a consequence all generalized k-Gauduchon manifolds with holonomy of the Hermitian connection with skew-symmetric torsion contained in SU(n) do not admit holomorphic (n,0) forms. Furthermore we show that all conformally balanced, (l|k)-strong Kaehler manifolds with torsion, k<n-1, are Kähler. We also give several compact examples of (l|k)-strong Kaehler and Calabi-Yau manifolds with torsion.

HKT manifolds with holonomy SL(n,H)

We show that on an HKT manifold the holonomy of the Obata connection is contained in SL(n,H) if and only if the Lee form is an exact one form. As an application, we show compact HKT manifolds with holomorphically trivial canonical bundle which are not balanced. A simple criterion for non-existence of HKT metric on hypercomplex manifold is given in terms of the Ricci-type tensors of the Obata connection.

Conformal quaternionic contact curvature and the local sphere theorem

A tensor invariant is defined on a quaternionic contact manifold in terms of the curvature and torsion of the Biquard connection involving derivatives up to third order of the contact form. This tensor, called quaternionic contact conformal curvature, is similar to the Weyl conformal curvature in Riemannian geometry and to the Chern-Moser tensor in CR geometry. It is shown that a quaternionic contact manifold is locally quaternionic contact conformal to the standard flat quaternionic contact structure on the quaternionic Heisenberg group, or equivalently, to the standard 3-sasakian structure on the sphere iff the quaternionic contact conformal curvature vanishes.

Heterotic supersymmetry, anomaly cancellation and equations of motion

We show that the heterotic supersymmetry (Killing spinor equations) and the anomaly cancellation imply the heterotic equations of motion in dimensions five, six, seven, eight if and only if the connection on the tangent bundle is an instanton. For heterotic compactifications in dimension six this reduces the choice of that connection to the unique SU(3) instanton on a manifold with stable tangent bundle of degree zero.

Quaternionic contact Einstein structures and the quaternionic contact Yamabe problem

A partial solution of the quaternionic contact Yamabe problem on the quaternionic sphere is given. It is shown that the torsion of the Biquard connection vanishes exactly when the trace-free part of the horizontal Ricci tensor of the Biquard connection is zero and this occurs precisely on 3-Sasakian manifolods. All conformal deformations sending the standard flat torsion-free quaternionic contact structure on the quaternionic Heisenberg group to a quaternionic contact structure with vanishing torsion of the Biquard connection are explicitly described. A '3-Hamiltonian form' of infinitesimal conformal automorphisms of quaternionic contact structures is presented.

Quaternionic Kaehler and Spin(7) metrics arising from quaternionic contact Einstein structures

We construct left invariant quaternionic contact (qc) structures on Lie groups with zero and non-zero torsion and with non-vanishing quaternionic contact conformal curvature tensor, thus showing the existence of non-flat quaternionic contact manifolds. We prove that the product of the real line with a seven dimensional manifold, equipped with a certain qc structure, has a quaternionic Kaehler metric as well as a metric with holonomy contained in Spin(7). As a consequence we determine explicit quaternionic Kaehler metrics and Spin(7)-holonomy metrics which seem to be new. Moreover, we give explicit non-compact eight dimensional almost quaternion hermitian manifolds with either a closed fundamental four form or fundamental two forms defining a differential ideal that are not quaternionic Kaehler.

preprint2008arXiv

Conformal paracontact curvature and the local flatness theorem

A curvature-type tensor invariant called para contact (pc) conformal curvature is defined on a paracontact manifold. It is shown that a paracontact manifold is locally paracontact conformal to the hyperbolic Heisenberg group or to a hyperquadric of neutral signature if and only if the pc conformal curvature vanishes. In the three dimensional case the corresponding result is achieved through employing a certain symmetric (0,2) tensor. The well known result of Cartan-Chern-Moser giving necessary and sufficient condition a CR-structure to be CR equivalent to a hyperquadric in the complex vector space is presented in-line with the paracontact case. An explicit formula for the regular part of a solution to the sub-ultrahyperbolic Yamabe equation on the hyperbolic Heisenberg group is shown.

Nearly hypo structures and compact Nearly Kähler 6-manifolds with conical singularities

We prove that any totally geodesic hypersurface $N^5$ of a 6-dimensional nearly Kähler manifold $M^6$ is a Sasaki-Einstein manifold, and so it has a hypo structure in the sense of \cite{ConS}. We show that any Sasaki-Einstein 5-manifold defines a nearly Kähler structure on the sin-cone $N^5\times\mathbb R$, and a compact nearly Kähler structure with conical singularities on $N^5\times [0,π]$ when $N^5$ is compact thus providing a link between Calabi-Yau structure on the cone $N^5\times [0,π]$ and the nearly Kähler structure on the sin-cone $N^5\times [0,π]$. We define the notion of {\it nearly hypo} structure that leads to a general construction of nearly Kähler structure on $N^5\times\mathbb R$. We determine {\it double hypo} structure as the intersection of hypo and nearly hypo structures and classify double hypo structures on 5-dimensional Lie algebras with non-zero first Betti number. An extension of the concept of nearly Kähler structure is introduced, which we refer to as {\it nearly half flat} SU(3)-structure, that leads us to generalize the construction of nearly parallel $G_2$-structures on $M^6\times\mathbb R$ given in \cite{BM}. For $N^5=S^5\subset S^6$ and for $N^5=S^2 \times S^3\subset S^3 \times S^3$, we describe explicitly a Sasaki-Einstein hypo structure as well as the corresponding nearly Kähler structures on $N^5\times\mathbb R$ and $N^5\times [0,π]$, and the nearly parallel $G_2$-structures on $N^5\times\mathbb R^2$ and $(N^5\times [0,π])\times [0,π]$.

Hyper-ParaHermitian manifolds with torsion

Necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a hyper-parahermitian connection with totally skew-symmetric torsion (HPKT-structure) are presented. It is shown that any HPKT-structure is locally generated by a real (potential) function. An invariant first order differential operator is defined on any almost hyper-paracomplex manifold showing that it is two-step nilpotent exactly when the almost hyper-paracomplex structure is integrable. A local HPKT-potential is expressed in terms of this operator. Examples of (locally) invariant HPKT-structures with closed as well as non-closed torsion 3-form on a class of (locally) homogeneous hyperparacomplex manifolds (some of them compact) are constructed.

Killing spinor equations in dimension 7 and geometry of integrable G_2-manifolds

We compute the scalar curvature of 7-dimensional ${G}_2$-manifolds admitting a connection with totally skew-symmetric torsion. We prove the formula for the general solution of the Killing spinor equation and express the Riemannian scalar curvature of the solution in terms of the dilation function and the NS 3-form field. In dimension n=7 the dilation function involved in the second fermionic string equation has an interpretation as a conformal change of the underlying integrable ${G}_2$-structure into a cocalibrated one of pure type $W_3$.

Geometry of Quaternionic Kähler connections with torsion

The target space of a (4,0) supersymmetric two-dimensional sigma model with Wess-Zumino term has a connection with totally skew-symmetric torsion and holonomy contained in Sp(n).Sp(1), QKT-connection. We study the geometry of QKT-connections. We find conditions to the existence of a QKT-connection and prove that if it exists it is unique. Studying conformal transformations we obtain a lot of (compact) examples of QKT manifolds. We present a (local) description of 4-dimensional homogeneous QKT structures relying on the known result of naturally reductive homogeneous Riemannian manifolds. We consider Einstein-like QKT manifold and find closed relations with Einstein-Weyl geometry in dimension four.
