Spin-harmonic structures and nilmanifolds

We introduce spin-harmonic structures, a class of geometric structures on Riemannian manifolds of low dimension which are defined by a harmonic unitary spinor. Such structures are related to SU(2) (dim=4,5), SU(3) (dim=6) and G_2 (dim=7) structures; in dimension 8, a spin-harmonic structure is equivalent to a balanced Spin(7) structure. As an application, we obtain examples of compact 8-manifolds endowed with non-integrable Spin(7) structures of balanced type.

Homotopic properties of Kähler orbifolds

We prove the formality and the evenness of odd-degree Betti numbers for compact Kähler orbifolds, by adapting the classical proofs for Kähler manifolds. As a consequence, we obtain examples of symplectic orbifolds not admitting any Kähler orbifold structure. We also review the known examples of non-formal simply connected Sasakian manifolds, and produce an example of a non-formal quasi-regular Sasakian manifold with Betti numbers $b_1=0$ and $b_2\,> 1$.

Parallel forms, co-Kähler Manifolds and their Models

We show how certain topological properties of co-Kähler manifolds derive from those of the Kähler manifolds which construct them. In particular, we show that the existence of parallel forms on a co-Kähler manifold reduces the computation of cohomology from the de Rham complex to certain amenable sub-cdga's defined by geometrically natural operators derived from the co-Kähler structure. This provides a simpler proof of the formality of the foliation minimal model in this context.

Formality and the Lefschetz property in symplectic and cosymplectic geometry

We review topological properties of Kähler and symplectic manifolds, and of their odd-dimensional counterparts, coKähler and cosymplectic manifolds. We focus on formality, Lefschetz property and parity of Betti numbers, also distinguishing the simply-connected case (in the Kähler/symplectic situation) and the $b_1=1$ case (in the coKähler/cosymplectic situation).

A $6$-dimensional simply connected complex and symplectic manifold with no Kähler metric

We construct a simply connected compact manifold which has complex and symplectic structures but does not admit Kähler metrics, in the lowest possible dimension where this can happen, that is, dimension 6. Such a manifold is automatically formal and has even odd-degree Betti numbers but it does not satisfy the Lefschetz property for any symplectic form.

Manifolds which are complex and symplectic but not Kähler

The first example of a compact manifold admitting both complex and symplectic structures but not admitting a Kähler structure is the renowned Kodaira-Thurston manifold. We review its construction and show that this paradigm is very general and is not related to the fundamental group. More specifically, we prove that the simply-connected $8$-dimensional compact manifold of [\textsc{M. Fernández and V. Muñoz}, \emph{An 8-dimensional non-formal simply connected symplectic manifold}, Ann. of Math. (2) \textbf{167}, no. 3, 1045--1054, 2008.] admits both symplectic and complex structures but does not carry Kähler metrics.

Non-formal co-symplectic manifolds

We study the formality of the mapping torus of an orientation-preserving diffeomorphism of a manifold. In particular, we give conditions under which a mapping torus has a non-zero Massey product. As an application we prove that there are non-formal compact co-symplectic manifolds of dimension $m$ and with first Betti number $b$ if and only if $m=3$ and $b \geq 2$, or $m \geq 5$ and $b \geq 1$. Explicit examples for each one of these cases are given.

On the structure of co-Kähler manifolds

By the work of Li, a compact co-Kähler manifold $M$ is a mapping torus $K_φ$, where $K$ is a Kähler manifold and $φ$ is a Hermitian isometry. We show here that there is always a finite cyclic cover $\bar M$ of the form $\bar M \cong K \times S^1$, where $\cong$ is equivariant diffeomorphism with respect to an action of $S^1$ on $M$ and the action of $S^1$ on $K \times S^1$ by translation on the second factor. Furthermore, the covering transformations act diagonally on $S^1$, $K$ and are translations on the $S^1$ factor. In this way, we see that, up to a finite cover, all compact co-Kähler manifolds arise as the product of a Kähler manifold and a circle.

Minimal algebras and $2-$step nilpotent Lie algebras in dimension 7

We use the methods of \cite{BM} to give a classification of $7-$dimensional minimal algebras, generated in degree 1, over any field $\bk$ of characteristic $\textrm{char}(\bk)\neq 2$, whose characteristic filtration has length 2. Equivalently, we classify $2-$step nilpotent Lie algebras in dimension 7. This classification also recovers the real homotopy type of $7-$dimensional $2-$step nilmanifolds.

Classification of Minimal Algebras over any Field up to Dimension 6

We give a classification of minimal algebras generated in degree 1, defined over any field $\bk$ of characteristic different from 2, up to dimension 6. This recovers the classification of nilpotent Lie algebras over $\bk$ up to dimension 6. In the case of a field $\bk$ of characteristic zero, we obtain the classification of nilmanifolds of dimension less than or equal to 6, up to $\bk$-homotopy type. Finally, we determine which rational homotopy types of such nilmanifolds carry a symplectic structure.
