Complete Modified Logarithmic Sobolev inequality for sub-Laplacian on $SU(2)$

We prove that the canonical sub-Laplacian on $SU(2)$ admits a uniform modified log-Sobolev inequality for all its matrix-valued functions, independent of the matrix dimension. This is the first example of sub-Laplacian that a matrix-valued modified log-Sobolev inequality has been obtained. We also show that on Lie groups, the heat kernel measure $p_t$ at time $t$ admits matrix-valued modified log-Sobolev constants of order $O(t^{-1})$.

Weighted $L^2$-contractivity of Langevin dynamics with singular potentials

Convergence to equilibrium of underdamped Langevin dynamics is studied under general assumptions on the potential $U$ allowing for singularities. By modifying the direct approach to convergence in $L^2$ pioneered by F. Hérau and developped by Dolbeault, Mouhot and Schmeiser, we show that the dynamics converges exponentially fast to equilibrium in the topologies $L^2(dμ)$ and $L^2(W^* dμ)$, where $μ$ denotes the invariant probability measure and $W^*$ is a suitable Lyapunov weight. In both norms, we make precise how the exponential convergence rate depends on the friction parameter $γ$ in Langevin dynamics, by providing a lower bound scaling as $\min(γ, γ^{-1})$. The results hold for usual polynomial-type potentials as well as potentials with singularities such as those arising from pairwise Lennard-Jones interactions between particles.

Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes with singular drifts: integral estimates and Girsanov densities

We consider a perturbation of a Hilbert space-valued Ornstein--Uhlenbeck process by a class of singular nonlinear non-autonomous maximal monotone time-dependent drifts. The only further assumption on the drift is that it is bounded on balls in the Hilbert space uniformly in time. First we introduce a new notion of generalized solutions for such equations which we call pseudo-weak solutions and prove that they always exist and obtain pathwise estimates in terms of the data of the equation. Then we prove that their laws are absolutely continuous with respect to the law of the original Ornstein--Uhlenbeck process. In particular, we show that pseudo-weak solutions always have continuous sample paths. In addition, we obtain integrability estimates of the associated Girsanov densities. Some of our results concern non-random equations as well, while probabilistic results are new even in finite-dimensional autonomous settings.

An application of a functional inequality to quasi-invariance in infinite dimensions

One way to interpret smoothness of a measure in infinite dimensions is quasi-invariance of the measure under a class of transformations. Usually such settings lack a reference measure such as the Lebesgue or Haar measure, and therefore we can not use smoothness of a density with respect to such a measure. We describe how a functional inequality can be used to prove quasi-invariance results in several settings. In particular, this gives a different proof of the classical Cameron-Martin (Girsanov) theorem for an abstract Wiener space. In addition, we revisit several more geometric examples, even though the main abstract result concerns quasi-invariance of a measure under a group action on a measure space.

Hypoelliptic heat kernel on nilpotent Lie groups

The starting point of our analysis is an old idea of writing an eigenfunction expansion for a heat kernel considered in the case of a hypoelliptic heat kernel on a nilpotent Lie group $G$. One of the ingredients of this approach is the generalized Fourier transform. The formula one gets using this approach is explicit as long as we can find all unitary irreducible representations of $G$. In the current paper we consider an $n$-step nilpotent Lie group $G_{n}$ as an illustration of this technique. First we apply Kirillov's orbit method to describe these representations for $G_{n}$. This allows us to write the corresponding hypoelliptic heat kernel using an integral formula over a Euclidean space. As an application, we describe a short-time behavior of the hypoelliptic heat kernel in our case.

Equivalence of the Brownian and energy representations

We consider two unitary representations of the infinite-dimensional groups of smooth paths with values in a compact Lie group. The first representation is induced by quasi-invariance of the Wiener measure, and the second representation is the energy representation. We define these representations and their basic properties, and then we prove that these representations are unitarily equivalent.

Sub-Laplacians on sub-Riemannian manifolds

We consider different sub-Laplacians on a sub-Riemannian manifold $M$. Namely, we compare different natural choices for such operators, and give conditions under which they coincide. One of these operators is a sub-Laplacian we constructed previously in \cite{GordinaLaetsch2014a}. This operator is canonical with respect to the horizontal Brownian motion, we are able to define the sub-Laplacian without some a priori choice of measure. The other operator is $\operatorname{div}^ω \operatorname{grad}_{\mathcal{H}}$ for some volume form $ω$ on $M$. We illustrate our results by examples of three Lie groups equipped with a sub-Riemannian structure: $\operatorname{SU}\left( 2 \right)$, the Heisenberg group and the affine group.

Weak Convergence to Brownian Motion on Sub-Riemannian Manifolds

This paper considers a classical question of approximation of Brownian motion by a random walk in the setting of a sub-Riemannian manifold $M$. To construct such a random walk we first address several issues related to the degeneracy of such a manifold. In particular, we define a family of sub-Laplacian operators naturally connected to the geometry of the underlining manifold. In the case when $M$ is a Riemannian (non-degenerate) manifold, we recover the Laplace-Beltrami operator. We then construct the corresponding random walk, and under standard assumptions on the sub-Laplacian and $M$ we show that this random walk weakly converges to a process, horizontal Brownian motion, whose infinitesimal generator is the sub-Laplacian. An example of the Heisenberg group equipped with a standard sub-Riemannian metric is considered in detail, in which case the sub-Laplacian we introduced is shown to be the sum of squares (Hörmander's) operator.

Harnack inequalities in infinite dimensions

We consider the Harnack inequality for harmonic functions with respect to three types of infinite dimensional operators. For the infinite dimensional Laplacian, we show no Harnack inequality is possible. We also show that the Harnack inequality fails for a large class of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes, although functions that are harmonic with respect to these processes do satisfy an a priori modulus of continuity. Many of these processes also have a coupling property. The third type of operator considered is the infinite dimensional analog of operators in Hörmander's form. In this case a Harnack inequality does hold.

Lévy Processes in a Step 3 Nilpotent Lie Group

The infinitesimal generators of Lévy processes in Euclidean space are pseudo-differential operators with symbols given by the Lévy-Khintchine formula. This classical analysis relies heavily on Fourier analysis which in the case when the state space is a Lie group becomes much more subtle. Still the notion of pseudo-differential operators can be extended to connected, simply connected nilpotent Lie groups by employing the Weyl functional calculus. With respect to this definition, the generators of Lévy processes in the simplest step 3 nilpotent Lie group $G$ are pseudo-differential operators which admit $C_c(G)$ as its core.

A subelliptic Taylor isomorphism on infinite-dimensional Heisenberg groups

Let $G$ denote an infinite-dimensional Heisenberg-like group, which is a class of infinite-dimensional step 2 stratified Lie groups. We consider holomorphic functions on $G$ that are square integrable with respect to a heat kernel measure which is formally subelliptic, in the sense that all appropriate finite dimensional projections are smooth measures. We prove a unitary equivalence between a subclass of these square integrable holomorphic functions and a certain completion of the universal enveloping algebra of the "Cameron-Martin" Lie subalgebra. The isomorphism defining the equivalence is given as a composition of restriction and Taylor maps.

Quasi-invariance for heat kernel measures on sub-Riemannian infinite-dimensional Heisenberg groups

We study heat kernel measures on sub-Riemannian infinite-dimensional Heisenberg-like Lie groups. In particular, we show that Cameron-Martin type quasi-invariance results hold in this subelliptic setting and give $L^p$-estimates for the Radon-Nikodym derivatives. The main ingredient in our proof is a generalized curvature-dimension estimate which holds on approximating finite-dimensional projection groups. Such estimates were first introduced by Baudoin and Garofalo in \cite{BaudoinGarofalo2011}.

Dimension-independent Harnack inequalities for subordinated semigroups

Dimension-independent Harnack inequalities are derived for a class of subordinate semigroups. In particular, for a diffusion satisfying the Bakry-Emery curvature condition, the subordinate semigroup with power $α$ satisfies a dimension-free Harnack inequality provided $α\in(1/2, 1)$, and it satisfies the log-Harnack inequality for all $α\in (0,1).$ Some infinite-dimensional examples are also presented.
