The Geometrical Origin of Dark Energy

The geometrical formulation of the quantum Hamilton-Jacobi theory shows that the quantum potential is never trivial, so that it plays the rôle of intrinsic energy. Such a key property selects the Wheeler-DeWitt (WDW) quantum potential $Q[g_{jk}]$ as the natural candidate for the dark energy. This leads to the WDW Hamilton-Jacobi equation with a vanishing kinetic term, and with the identification $$ Λ=-\frac{κ^2}{\sqrt{\bar g}}Q[g_{jk}] \ . $$ This shows that the cosmological constant is a quantum correction of the Einstein tensor, reminiscent of the von Weizsäcker correction to the kinetic term of the Thomas-Fermi theory. The quantum potential also defines the Madelung pressure tensor. The geometrical origin of the vacuum energy density, a strictly non-perturbative phenomenon, provides strong evidence that it is due to a graviton condensate. Time independence of the regularized WDW equation suggests that the ratio between the Planck length and the Hubble radius may be a time constant, providing an infrared/ultraviolet duality. We speculate that such a duality is related to the local to global geometry theorems for constant curvatures, showing that understanding the universe geometry is crucial for a formulation of Quantum Gravity.

Closed Form of the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff Formula for the Generators of Semisimple Complex Lie Algebras

Recently it has been introduced an algorithm Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff (BCH) formula, which extends the Van-Brunt and Visser recent results, leading to new closed forms of BCH formula. More recently, it has been shown that there are {\it 13 types} of such commutator algebras. We show, by providing the explicit solutions, that these include the generators of the semisimple complex Lie algebras. More precisely, for any pair, $X$, $Y$ of the Cartan-Weyl basis, we find $W$, linear combination of $X$, $Y$, such that $$ \exp(X) \exp(Y)=\exp(W) $$ The derivation of such closed forms follows, in part, by using the above mentioned recent results. The complete derivation is provided by considering the structure of of the root system. Furthermore, if $X$, $Y$ and $Z$ are three generators of the Cartan-Weyl basis, we find, for a wide class of cases, $W$, linear combination of $X$, $Y$ and $Z$, such that $$ \exp(X) \exp(Y) \exp(Z)=\exp(W) $$ It turns out that the relevant commutator algebras are {\it type 1c-i}, {\it type 4} and {\it type 5}. A key result concerns an iterative application of the algorithm leading to relevant extensions of the cases admitting closed forms of the BCH formula. Here we provide the main steps of such an iteration that will be developed in a forthcoming paper.

Dual representation for the generating functional of the Feynman path-integral

The generating functional for scalar theories admits a representation which is dual with respect to the one introduced by Schwinger, interchanging the role of the free and interacting terms. It maps $\int V(δ_J)$ and $JΔJ$ to $δ_{ϕ_c}Δδ_{ϕ_c}$ and $\int V(ϕ_c)$, respectively, with $ϕ_c=\int JΔ$ and $Δ$ the Feynman propagator. Comparing the Schwinger representation with its dual version one gets a little known relation that we prove to be a particular case of a more general operatorial relation. We then derive a new representation of the generating functional $T[ϕ_c]=W[J]$ expressed in terms of covariant derivatives acting on 1 $$ T[ϕ_c] = {N\over N_0} \exp(-U_0[ϕ_c])\exp\Big(-\int V({\cal D}_{ϕ_c}^-)\Big) \cdot 1 $$ where ${\cal D}_ϕ^{\pm}(x)=\mpΔ{δ\overδϕ}(x)+ϕ(x)$. The dual representation, which is deeply related to the Hermite polynomials, is the key to express the generating functional associated to a sum of potentials in terms of factorized generating functionals. This is applied to renormalization, leading to a factorization of the counterterms of the interaction. We investigate the structure of the functional generator for normal ordered potentials and derive an infinite set of relations in the case of the potential ${λ\over n!}:ϕ^n:$. Such relations are explicitly derived by using the Faà di Bruno formula. This also yields the explicit expression of the generating functional of connected Green's functions.

Quantum Field Perturbation Theory Revisited

Schwinger's formalism in quantum field theory can be easily implemented in the case of scalar theories in $D$ dimension with exponential interactions, such as $μ^D\exp(αϕ)$. In particular, we use the relation $$ \exp\big(α{δ\over δJ(x)}\big)\exp(-Z_0[J])=\exp(-Z_0[J+α_x]) $$ with $J$ the external source, and $α_x(y)=αδ(y-x)$. Such a shift is strictly related to the normal ordering of $\exp(αϕ)$ and to a scaling relation which follows by renormalizing $μ$. Next, we derive a new formulation of perturbation theory for the potentials $V(ϕ)={λ\over n!}:ϕ^n:$, using the generating functional associated to $:\exp(αϕ):$. The $Δ(0)$-terms related to the normal ordering are absorbed at once. The functional derivatives with respect to $J$ to compute the generating functional are replaced by ordinary derivatives with respect to auxiliary parameters. We focus on scalar theories, but the method is general and similar investigations extend to other theories.

A Surprising Relation for the Effective Coupling Constants of N=2 Super Yang-Mills Theories

We show that the effective coupling constants $τ$ of supersymmetric gauge theories described by hyperelliptic curves do not distinguish between the lattices of the two kinds of heterotic string. In particular, the following relation $$ Θ_{D_{16}^+}(τ)=Θ_{E_8}^2(τ) $$ holds. This is reminiscent of the relation, by $T$-duality, of the two heterotic strings. We suggest that such a relation extends to all curves describing effective supersymmetric gauge theories.

An algorithm for the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff formula

A simple algorithm, which exploits the associativity of the BCH formula, and that can be generalized by iteration, extends the remarkable simplification of the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff (BCH) formula, recently derived by Van-Brunt and Visser. We show that if $[X,Y]=uX+vY+cI$, $[Y,Z]=wY+zZ+dI$, and, consistently with the Jacobi identity, $[X,Z]=mX+nY+pZ+eI$, then $$ \exp(X)\exp(Y)\exp(Z)=\exp({aX+bY+cZ+dI}) $$ where $a$, $b$, $c$ and $d$ are solutions of four equations. In particular, the Van-Brunt and Visser formula $$\exp(X)\exp(Z)=\exp({aX+bZ+c[X,Z]+dI}) $$ extends to cases when $[X,Z]$ contains also elements different from $X$ and $Z$. Such a closed form of the BCH formula may have interesting applications both in mathematics and physics. As an application, we provide the closed form of the BCH formula in the case of the exponentiation of the Virasoro algebra, with ${\rm SL}_2({\rm C})$ following as a subcase. We also determine three-dimensional subalgebras of the Virasoro algebra satisfying the Van-Brunt and Visser condition. It turns out that the exponential form of ${\rm SL}_2({\rm C})$ has a nice representation in terms of its eigenvalues and of the fixed points of the corresponding Möbius transformation. This may have applications in Uniformization theory and Conformal Field Theories.

Classification of Commutator Algebras Leading to the New Type of Closed Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff Formulas

We show that there are {\it 13 types} of commutator algebras leading to the new closed forms of the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff (BCH) formula $$\exp(X)\exp(Y)\exp(Z)=\exp({AX+BZ+CY+DI}) \ , $$ derived in arXiv:1502.06589, JHEP {\bf 1505} (2015) 113. This includes, as a particular case, $\exp(X) \exp(Z)$, with $[X,Z]$ containing other elements in addition to $X$ and $Z$. The algorithm exploits the associativity of the BCH formula and is based on the decomposition $\exp(X)\exp(Y)\exp(Z)=\exp(X)\exp({αY}) \exp({(1-α) Y}) \exp(Z)$, with $α$ fixed in such a way that it reduces to $\exp({\tilde X})\exp({\tilde Y})$, with $\tilde X$ and $\tilde Y$ satisfying the Van-Brunt and Visser condition $[\tilde X,\tilde Y]=\tilde u\tilde X+\tilde v\tilde Y+\tilde cI$. It turns out that $e^α$ satisfies, in the generic case, an algebraic equation whose exponents depend on the parameters defining the commutator algebra. In nine {\it types} of commutator algebras, such an equation leads to rational solutions for $α$. We find all the equations that characterize the solution of the above decomposition problem by combining it with the Jacobi identity.

Energy Quantisation and Time Parameterisation

We show that if space is compact, then trajectories cannot be defined in the framework of quantum Hamilton--Jacobi equation. The starting point is the simple observation that when the energy is quantized it is not possible to make variations with respect to the energy, and the time parameterisation t-t_0=\partial_E S_0, implied by Jacobi's theorem and that leads to group velocity, is ill defined. It should be stressed that this follows directly form the quantum HJ equation without any axiomatic assumption concerning the standard formulation of quantum mechanics. This provides a stringent connection between the quantum HJ equation and the Copenhagen interpretation. Together with tunneling and the energy quantization theorem for confining potentials, formulated in the framework of quantum HJ equation, it leads to the main features of the axioms of quantum mechanics from a unique geometrical principle. Similarly to the case of the classical HJ equation, this fixes its quantum analog by requiring that there exist point transformations, rather than canonical ones, leading to the trivial hamiltonian. This is equivalent to a basic cocycle condition on the states. Such a cocycle condition can be implemented on compact spaces, so that continuous energy spectra are allowed only as a limiting case. Remarkably, a compact space would also imply that the Dirac and von Neumann formulations of quantum mechanics essentially coincide. We suggest that there is a definition of time parameterisation leading to trajectories in the context of the quantum HJ equation having the probabilistic interpretation of the Copenhagen School.

Modular Invariant Regularization of String Determinants and the Serre GAGA Principle

Since any string theory involves a path integration on the world-sheet metric, their partition functions are volume forms on the moduli space of genus g Riemann surfaces M_g, or on its super analog. It is well known that modular invariance fixes strong constraints that in some cases appear only at higher genus. Here we classify all the Weyl and modular invariant partition functions given by the path integral on the world-sheet metric, together with space-time coordinates, b-c and/or beta-gamma systems, that correspond to volume forms on M_g. This was a long standing question, advocated by Belavin and Knizhnik, inspired by the Serre GAGA principle and based on the properties of the Mumford forms. The key observation is that the Bergman reproducing kernel provides a Weyl and modular invariant way to remove the point dependence that appears in the above string determinants, a property that should have its superanalog based on the super Bergman reproducing kernel. This is strictly related to the properties of the propagator associated to the space-time coordinates. Such partition functions Z[J] have well-defined asymptotic behavior and can be considered as a basis to represent a wide class of string theories. In particular, since non-critical bosonic string partition functions Z_D are volume forms on M_g, we suggest that there is a mapping, based on bosonization and degeneration techniques, from the Liouville sector to first order systems that may identify Z_D as a subclass of the Z[J]. The appearance of b-c and beta-gamma systems of any conformal weight shows that such theories are related to W algebras. The fact that in a large N 't Hooft-like limit 2D W_N minimal models CFTs are related to higher spin gravitational theories on AdS_3, suggests that the string partition functions introduced here may lead to a formulation of higher spin theories in a string context.

Determinantal Characterization of Canonical Curves and Combinatorial Theta Identities

We characterize genus g canonical curves by the vanishing of combinatorial products of g+1 determinants of Brill-Noether matrices. This also implies the characterization of canonical curves in terms of (g-2)(g-3)/2 theta identities. A remarkable mechanism, based on a basis of H^0(K_C) expressed in terms of Szego kernels, reduces such identities to a simple rank condition for matrices whose entries are logarithmic derivatives of theta functions. Such a basis, together with the Fay trisecant identity, also leads to the solution of the question of expressing the determinant of Brill-Noether matrices in terms of theta functions, without using the problematic Klein-Fay section sigma.

Extending the Belavin-Knizhnik "wonderful formula" by the characterization of the Jacobian

A long-standing question in string theory is to find the explicit expression of the bosonic measure, a crucial issue also in determining the superstring measure. Such a measure was known up to genus three. Belavin and Knizhnik conjectured an expression for genus four which has been proved in the framework of the recently introduced vector-valued Teichmueller modular forms. It turns out that for g>3 the bosonic measure is expressed in terms of such forms. In particular, the genus four Belavin-Knizhnik "wonderful formula" has a remarkable extension to arbitrary genus whose structure is deeply related to the characterization of the Jacobian locus. Furthermore, it turns out that the bosonic string measure has an elegant geometrical interpretation as generating the quadrics in P^{g-1} characterizing the Riemann surface. All this leads to identify forms on the Siegel upper half-space that, if certain conditions related to the characterization of the Jacobian are satisfied, express the bosonic measure as a multiresidue in the Siegel upper half-space. We also suggest that it may exist a super analog on the super Siegel half-space.

Finite Strings From Non-Chiral Mumford Forms

We show that there is an infinite class of partition functions with world-sheet metric, space-time coordinates and first order systems, that correspond to volume forms on the moduli space of Riemann surfaces and are free of singularities at the Deligne-Mumford boundary. An example is the partition function with 4=2(c_2+c_3+c_4-c_5) space-time coordinates, a $b$-$c$ system of weight 3, one of weight 4 and a beta-gamma system of weight 5. Such partition functions are derived from the mapping of the Mumford forms to non-factorized scalar forms on M_g introduced in arXiv:1209.6049.

Vector-Valued Modular Forms from the Mumford Form, Schottky-Igusa Form, Product of Thetanullwerte and the Amazing Klein Formula

Vector-valued Siegel modular forms are the natural generalization of the classical elliptic modular forms as seen by studying the cohomology of the universal abelian variety. We show that for g>=4, a new class of vector-valued modular forms, defined on the Teichmuller space, naturally appears from the Mumford forms, a question directly related to the Schottky problem. In this framework we show that the discriminant of the quadric associated to the complex curves of genus 4 is proportional to the square root of the products of Thetanullwerte χ_{68}, which is a proof of the recently rediscovered Klein `amazing formula'. Furthermore, it turns out that the coefficients of such a quadric are derivatives of the Schottky-Igusa form evaluated at the Jacobian locus, implying new theta relations involving the latter, χ_{68} and the theta series corresponding to the even unimodular lattices E_8\oplus E_8 and D_{16}^+. We also find, for g=4, a functional relation between the singular component of the theta divisor and the Riemann period matrix.

Getting superstring amplitudes by degenerating Riemann surfaces

We explicitly show how the chiral superstring amplitudes can be obtained through factorisation of the higher genus chiral measure induced by suitable degenerations of Riemann surfaces. This powerful tool also allows to derive, at any genera, consistency relations involving the amplitudes and the measure. A key point concerns the choice of the local coordinate at the node on degenerate Riemann surfaces that greatly simplifies the computations. As a first application, starting from recent ansaetze for the chiral measure up to genus five, we compute the chiral two-point function for massless Neveu-Schwarz states at genus two, three and four. For genus higher than three, these computations include some new corrections to the conjectural formulae appeared so far in the literature. After GSO projection, the two-point function vanishes at genus two and three, as expected from space-time supersymmetry arguments, but not at genus four. This suggests that the ansatz for the superstring measure should be corrected for genus higher than four.

Linear relations among holomorphic quadratic differentials and induced Siegel's metric on M_g

We derive the explicit form of the (g-2)(g-3)/2 linearly independent relations among the products of pairs in a basis of holomorphic abelian differentials in the case of canonical curves of genus g greater than 3. It turns out that Petri's relations remarkably match in determinantal conditions. We explicitly express the volume form on the moduli space M_g of canonical curves induced by the Siegel metric, in terms of the period Riemann matrix only. By the Kodaira-Spencer map, the relations lead to an expression of the induced Siegel metric on M_g, that corresponds to the square of the Bergman reproducing kernel. A key role is played by distinguished bases for holomorphic differentials whose properties also lead to an immediate derivation of Fay's trisecant identity.

The Liouville Geometry of N=2 Instantons and the Moduli of Punctured Spheres

We study the instanton contributions of N=2 supersymmetric gauge theory and propose that the instanton moduli space is mapped to the moduli space of punctured spheres. Due to the recursive structure of the boundary in the Deligne-Knudsen-Mumford stable compactification, this leads to a new recursion relation for the instanton coefficients, which is bilinear. Instanton contributions are expressed as integrals on M_{0,n} in the framework of the Liouville F-models. This also suggests considering instanton contributions as a kind of Hurwitz numbers and also provides a prediction on the asymptotic form of the Gromov-Witten invariants. We also interpret this map in terms of the geometric engineering approach to the gauge theory, namely the topological A-model, as well as in the noncritical string theory framework. We speculate on the extension to nontrivial gravitational background and its relation to the uniformization program. Finally we point out an intriguing analogy with the self-dual YM equations for the gravitational version of SU(2) where surprisingly the same Hauptmodule of the SW solution appears.

The Equivalence Postulate of Quantum Mechanics

The Equivalence Principle (EP), stating that all physical systems are connected by a coordinate transformation to the free one with vanishing energy, univocally leads to the Quantum Stationary HJ Equation (QSHJE). Trajectories depend on the Planck length through hidden variables which arise as initial conditions. The formulation has manifest p-q duality, a consequence of the involutive nature of the Legendre transform and of its recently observed relation with second-order linear differential equations. This reflects in an intrinsic psi^D-psi duality between linearly independent solutions of the Schroedinger equation. Unlike Bohm's theory, there is a non-trivial action even for bound states. No use of any axiomatic interpretation of the wave-function is made. Tunnelling is a direct consequence of the quantum potential which differs from the usual one and plays the role of particle's self-energy. The QSHJE is defined only if the ratio psi^D/psi is a local self-homeomorphism of the extended real line. This is an important feature as the L^2 condition, which in the usual formulation is a consequence of the axiomatic interpretation of the wave-function, directly follows as a basic theorem which only uses the geometrical gluing conditions of psi^D/psi at q=\pm\infty as implied by the EP. As a result, the EP itself implies a dynamical equation that does not require any further assumption and reproduces both tunnelling and energy quantization. Several features of the formulation show how the Copenhagen interpretation hides the underlying nature of QM. Finally, the non-stationary higher dimensional quantum HJ equation and the relativistic extension are derived.

Non-holomorphic terms in N=2 SUSY Wilsonian actions and RG equation

In this paper we first investigate the Ansatz of one of the present authors for K(Ψ,\barΨ), the adimensional modular invariant non-holomorphic correction to the Wilsonian effective Lagrangian of an N=2 globally supersymmetric gauge theory. The renormalisation group beta-function of the theory crucially allows us to express K(Ψ,\barΨ) in a form that easily generalises to the case in which the theory is coupled to N_F hypermultiplets in the fundamental representation of the gauge group. This function satisfies an equation which should be viewed as a fully non-perturbative ``non-chiral superconformal Ward identity". We also determine its renormalisation group equation. Furthermore, as a first step towards checking the validity of this Ansatz, we compute the contribution to K(Ψ,\barΨ) from instantons of winding number k=1 and k=2. As a by-product of our analysis we check a non-renormalisation theorem for N_F=4.

A Statistical Interpretation of Space and Classical-Quantum duality

By defining a prepotential function for the stationary Schrödinger equation we derive an inversion formula for the space variable $x$ as a function of the wave-function $ψ$. The resulting equation is a Legendre transform that relates $x$, the prepotential ${\cal F}$, and the probability density. We invert the Schrödinger equation to a third-order differential equation for ${\cal F}$ and observe that the inversion procedure implies a $x$-$ψ$ duality. This phenomenon is related to a modular symmetry due to the superposition of the solutions of the Schrödinger equation. We propose that in quantum mechanics the space coordinate can be interpreted as a macroscopic variable of a statistical system with $\hbar$ playing the role of a scaling parameter. We show that the scaling property of the space coordinate with respect to $τ=\partial_ψ^2{\cal F}$ is determined by the ``beta-function''. We propose that the quantization of the inversion formula is a natural way to quantize geometry. The formalism is extended to higher dimensions and to the Klein-Gordon equation.
