Spinor-Vector Duality and the Swampland

The Swampland Program aims to address the question, "when does an effective field theory model of quantum gravity have an ultraviolet complete embedding in string theory?", and can be regarded as a bottom-up approach to investigations of quantum gravity. An alternative top-down approach aim to explore the imprints and the constraints imposed by the string theory dualities and symmetries on the effective field theory representations of quantum gravity. The most celebrated example of this approach is mirror symmetry. Mirror symmetry was first observed in worldsheet contructions of string compactifications. It was completely unexpected from the effective field theory point of view, and its implications in that context were astounding. In terms of the moduli parameters of toroidally compactified Narain spaces, mirror symmetry can be regarded as arising from mappings of the moduli of the internal compactified space. Spinor-vector duality, which was discovered in worldsheet constructions of string vacua, is an extension of mirror symmetry that arises from mappings of the Wilson line moduli, and provide a probe to constrain and explore the moduli spaces of $(2,0)$ string compactifications. Mirror symmetry and spinor-vector duality are mere two examples of a much wider symmetry structure, whose implications are yet to be unravelled. A mapping between supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric vacua is briefly discussed. $T$-duality is another important property of string theory, and can be thought of as phase-space duality in compact space. I propose that manifest phase-space duality, and the related equivalence postulate of quantum mechanics, provide the background independent overarching principles underlying quantum gravity.

Towards Classification of $\mathcal{N}=1$ and $\mathcal{N}=0$ Flipped $SU(5)$ Asymmetric $\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2$ Heterotic String Orbifolds

The free fermionic classification method provides a powerful tool to investigate string vacua, which led to the discovery of spinor--vector duality and exophobic string models. We extend the classification methodology to both $\mathcal{N}=1$ and $\mathcal{N}=0$ Flipped $SU(5)$ $\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2$ heterotic string orbifolds with asymmetric shifts. The impact of the asymmetric assignments on the phenomenological characteristics of these models is investigated. Of particular interest is the analysis of untwisted moduli fixing for various choices of asymmetric boundary conditions. Two classes of vacua with different characteristics are systematically investigated with help from SAT/SMT algorithms, which are shown to increase search efficiency by up to two orders of magnitude, as well as providing useful tools to find contradictions between various phenomenological criteria. The general form of the partition function for the space of models is explained and given for two specific example models for different choices of asymmetric boundary conditions. Additionally, the distribution of one-loop cosmological constant contributions for samples in the two different classes of models are depicted and discussed.

Type $\mathbf{\bar{0}}$ Heterotic String Orbifolds

The $Z_2\times Z_2$ heterotic string orbifold gives rise to a large space of phenomenological three generation models that serves as a testing ground to explore how the Standard Model of particle physics may be incorporated in a theory of quantum gravity. Recently, we demonstrated the existence of type 0 $Z_2\times Z_2$ heterotic string orbifolds in which there are no massless fermionic states. In this paper we demonstrate the existence of non--supersymmetric tachyon--free $Z_2\times Z_2$ heterotic string orbifolds that do not contain any massless bosonic states from the twisted sectors. We dub these configurations type ${\bar 0}$ models. They necessarily contain untwisted bosonic states, producing the gravitational, gauge and scalar moduli degrees of freedom, but possess an excess of massless fermionic states over bosonic ones, hence producing a positive cosmological constant. Such configurations may be instrumental when trying to understand the string dynamics in the early universe.

Doublet-Triplet Splitting in Fertile Left-Right Symmetric Heterotic String Vacua

Classification of Left-Right Symmetric (LRS) heterotic-string vacua in the free fermionic formulation, using random generation of generalised GSO (GGSO) projection coefficients, produced phenomenologically viable models with probability $4\times 10^{-11}$. Extracting substantial number of phenomenologically viable models requires modification of the classification method. This is achieved by identifying phenomenologically amenable conditions on the Generalised GSO projection coefficients that are randomly generated at the $SO(10)$ level. Around each of these fertile cores we perform a complete LRS classification, generating viable models with probabilility $1.4\times 10^{-2}$, hence increasing the probability of generating phenomenologically viable models by nine orders of magnitude, and producing some $1.4\times 10^5$ such models. In the process we identify a doublet-triplet selection mechanism that operates in twisted sectors of the string models that break the $SO(10)$ symmetry to the Pati-Salam subgroup. This mechanism therefore operates as well in free fermionic models with Pati-Salam and Standard-like Model $SO(10)$ subgroups.

Stable Three Generation Standard--like Model From a Tachyonic Ten Dimensional Heterotic--String Vacuum

Recently it was proposed that the ten dimensional tachyonic superstring vacua may serve as good starting points for the construction of viable phenomenological models. Such phenomenologically viable models enlarge the space of possible string solutions, and may offer novel insight into some of the outstanding problems in string phenomenology. In this paper we present a three generation standard--like model that may be regarded as a compactification of a ten dimensional tachyonic vacuum. We discuss the features of the model as compared to a similar model that may be regarded as compactification of the ten dimensional $SO(16)\times SO(16)$ heterotic-string. We further argue that in the four dimensional model all the geometrical moduli are fixed perturbatively, whereas the dilaton may be fixed by hidden sector non--perturbative effects.

The Geometrical Origin of Dark Energy

The geometrical formulation of the quantum Hamilton-Jacobi theory shows that the quantum potential is never trivial, so that it plays the rôle of intrinsic energy. Such a key property selects the Wheeler-DeWitt (WDW) quantum potential $Q[g_{jk}]$ as the natural candidate for the dark energy. This leads to the WDW Hamilton-Jacobi equation with a vanishing kinetic term, and with the identification $$ Λ=-\frac{κ^2}{\sqrt{\bar g}}Q[g_{jk}] \ . $$ This shows that the cosmological constant is a quantum correction of the Einstein tensor, reminiscent of the von Weizsäcker correction to the kinetic term of the Thomas-Fermi theory. The quantum potential also defines the Madelung pressure tensor. The geometrical origin of the vacuum energy density, a strictly non-perturbative phenomenon, provides strong evidence that it is due to a graviton condensate. Time independence of the regularized WDW equation suggests that the ratio between the Planck length and the Hubble radius may be a time constant, providing an infrared/ultraviolet duality. We speculate that such a duality is related to the local to global geometry theorems for constant curvatures, showing that understanding the universe geometry is crucial for a formulation of Quantum Gravity.

Non-Tachyonic Semi-Realistic Non-Supersymmetric Heterotic String Vacua

The heterotic--string models in the free fermionic formulation gave rise to some of the most realistic string models to date, which possess N=1 spacetime supersymmetry. Lack of evidence for supersymmetry at the LHC instigated recent interest in non-supersymmetric heterotic-string vacua. We explore what may be learned in this context from the quasi--realistic free fermionic models. We show that constructions with a low number of families give rise to proliferation of a priori tachyon producing sectors, compared to the non--realistic examples, which typically may contain only one such sector. The reason being that in the realistic cases the internal six dimensional space is fragmented into smaller units. We present one example of a quasi--realistic, non--supersymmetric, non--tachyonic, heterotic--string vacuum and compare the structure of its massless spectrum to the corresponding supersymmetric vacuum. While in some sectors supersymmetry is broken explicitly, i.e. the bosonic and fermionic sectors produce massless and massive states, other sectors, and in particular those leading to the chiral families, continue to exhibit fermi-bose degeneracy. In these sectors the massless spectrum, as compared to the supersymmetric cases, will only differ in some local or global U(1) charges. We discuss the conditions for obtaining $n_b=n_f$ at the massless level in these models. Our example model contains an anomalous U(1) symmetry, which generates a tadpole diagram at one loop-order in string perturbation theory. We speculate that this tadpole diagram may cancel the corresponding diagram generated by the one-loop non-vanishing vacuum energy and that in this respect the supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric vacua should be regarded on equal footing. Finally we discuss vacua that contain two supersymmetry generating sectors.

The 750 GeV diphoton LHC excess and Extra Z's in Heterotic-String Derived Models

The ATLAS and CMS collaborations recently recorded possible di-photon excess at 750 GeV and a less significant di-boson excess around 1.9 TeV. Such excesses may be produced in heterotic-string derived Z' models, where the di-photon excess may be connected with the Standard Model singlet scalar responsible for the Z' symmetry breaking, whereas the di-boson excess arises from production of the extra vector boson. Additional vector-like states in the string Z' model are instrumental to explain the relatively large width of the di-photon events and mandated by anomaly cancellation to be in the vicinity of the Z' breaking scale. Wilson line breaking of the non-Abelian gauge symmetries in the string models naturally gives rise to dark matter candidates. Future collider experiments will discriminate between the high-scale heterotic-string models, which preserve the perturbative unification paradigm indicated by the Standard Model data, versus the low scale string models. We also discuss the possibility for the production of the di-photon events with high scale $U(1)_{Z^\prime}$ breaking.

A Light Z' Heterotic-String Derived Model

The existence of an extra Z' inspired from heterotic-string theory at accessible energy scales attracted considerable interest in the particle physics literature. Surprisingly, however, the construction of heterotic--string derived models that allow for an extra Z' to remain unbroken down to low scales has proven to be very difficult. The main reason being that the U(1) symmetries that are typically discussed in the literature are either anomalous or have to be broken at a high scale to generate light neutrino masses. In this paper we use for that purpose the self duality property under the spinor vector duality, which was discovered in free fermionic heterotic-string models. The chiral massless states in the self--dual models fill complete 27 representations of E6. The anomaly free gauge symmetry in the effective low energy field theory of our string model is $SU(4)_C\times SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R\times U(1)_ζ$, where $U(1)_ζ$ is the family universal $U(1)$ symmetry that descends from E6, and is typically anomalous in other free fermionic heterotic-string models. Our model therefore allows for the existence of a low scale Z', which is a combination of $B-L$, $T_{3_L}$ and $T_{3_R}$. The string model is free of exotic fractionally charged states in the massless spectrum. It contains exotic SO(10) singlet states that carry fractional, non--E6 charge, with respect to $U(1)_ζ$. These non-E6 states arise in the string model due to the breaking of the E6 symmetry by discrete Wilson lines. They represent a distinct signature of the string vacua and cannot arise in E6 Grand Unified Theories. They may provide viable dark matter candidates.

Classification of SU(4) X SU(2) X U(1) Heterotic-String Models

The free fermionic construction of the heterotic string in four dimensions produced a large space of three generation models with the underlying $SO(10)$ embedding of the Standard Model states. The $SO(10)$ symmetry is broken to a subgroup directly at the string scale. Over the past few years free fermionic models with the Pati-Salam and flipped $SU(5)$ subgroups have been classified. In this paper we extend this classification program to models in which the $SO(10)$ symmetry is broken at the string level to the $SU(4)\times SU(2)_L\times U(1)_R$ (SU421) subgroup. The subspace of free fermionic models that we consider corresponds to symmetric ${\mathbb{Z}}_2 \times {\mathbb{Z}}_2$ orbifolds. We provide a general argument that shows that this class of SU421 free fermionic models cannot produce viable three generation models.

Extra $Z^\prime$s and $W^\prime$s in Heterotic--String Derived Models

The ATLAS collaboration recently recorded possible excess in the di--boson production at the di--boson invariant mass at around 2 TeV. Such an excess may be produced if there exist additional $Z^\prime$ and/or $W^\prime$ at that scale. We survey the extra $Z^\prime$s and $W^\prime$s that may arise from semi--realistic heterotic string vacua in the free fermionic formulation in seven distinct cases including: $U(1)_{Z^\prime}\in SO(10)$; family universal $U(1)_{Z^\prime}$ not in $SO(10)$; non--universal $U(1)_{Z^\prime}$; hidden sector $U(1)$ symmetries and kinetic mixing; left--right symmetric models; Pati--Salam models; leptophobic and custodial symmetries. Each case has a distinct signature associated with the extra symmetry breaking scale. In one of the cases we explore the discovery potential at the LHC using resonant leptoproduction. Existence of extra vector boson with the reported properties will significantly constrain the space of allowed string vacua.

Large volume susy breaking with a solution to the decompactification problem

We study heterotic ground states in which supersymmetry is broken by coupling the momentum and winding charges of two large extra dimensions to the R-charges of the supersymmetry generators. The large dimensions give rise to towers of heavy string thresholds that contribute to the running of the gauge couplings. In the general case, these contributions are proportional to the volume of the two large dimensions and invalidate the perturbative string expansion. The problem is evaded if the susy breaking sectors arise as a spontaneously broken phase of N=4 -> N=2 -> N=0 supersymmetry, provided that N=4 supersymmetry is restored on the boundary of the moduli space. We discuss the mechanism in the case of Z_2 x Z_2 orbifolds, which requires that the twisted sector that contains the large extra dimensions has no fixed points. We analyse the full string partition function and show that the twisted sectors distribute themselves in non-aligned N=2 orbits, hence preserving the solution to the string decompactification problem. Remarkably, we find that the contribution to the vacuum energy from the N=2 -> N=0 sectors is suppressed, and the only substantial contribution arises from the breaking of the N=4 sector to N=0.

Spinor-vector duality and light Z' in heterotic string vacua

We discuss the construction of heterotic--string models that allow for the existence of an extra $Z^\prime$ at low scales. One of the main difficulties encountered is that the desired symmetries tend to be anomalous in the prevailing three generation constructions. The reason is that these models utilise the symmetry breaking pattern $E_6\rightarrow SO(10)\times U(1)_ζ$ by GGSO projections. Consequently, $U(1)_ζ$ becomes anomalous. The spinor--vector duality that was observed in the fermionic $Z_2\times Z_2$ orbifold compactifications is used to construct a phenomenological three generation Pati--Salam heterotic--string model in which $U(1)_ζ$ is anomaly free and therefore can be a component of a low scale $Z^\prime$. The model implies existence of matter states at the $Z^\prime$ breaking scale, which are required for anomaly cancelation. Moreover, the string model gives rise to exotic states, which are $SO(10)$ singlets but carry exotic $U(1)_ζ$ charges. These states arise due to the breaking of $E_6$ by discrete Wilson lines and provide natural dark matter candidates. Initial indications suggest that the existence of additional gauge symmetries at the TeV scale may be confirmed in run II of the LHC experiment.

Classification of Flipped SU(5) Heterotic-String Vacua

We extend the classification of the free fermionic heterotic-string vacua to models in which the SO(10) GUT symmetry at the string scale is broken to the flipped SU(5) subgroup. In our classification method, the set of basis vectors defined by the boundary conditions which are assigned to the free fermions is fixed and the enumeration of the string vacua is obtained in terms of the Generalised GSO (GGSO) projection coefficients entering the one-loop partition function. We derive algebraic expressions for the GGSO projections for all the physical states appearing in the sectors generated by the set of basis vectors. This enables the analysis of the entire string spectrum to be programmed in to a computer code therefore, we performed a statistical sampling in the space of 2^{44} (approximately 10^{13}) flipped $SU(5)$ vacua and scanned up to 10^{12} GGSO configurations. For that purpose, two independent codes were developed based on JAVA and FORTRAN95. All the results presented here are confirmed by the two independent routines. Contrary to the corresponding Pati-Salam classification, we do not find exophobic flipped SU(5) vacua with an odd number of generations. We study the structure of exotic states appearing in the three generation models that additionally contain a viable Higgs spectrum. Moreover, we demonstrate the existence of models in which all the exotic states are confined by a hidden sector non-Abelian gauge symmetry as well as models that may admit the racetrack mechanism.

String Phenomenology: Past, Present and Future Perspectives

The observation of a scalar resonance at the LHC, compatible with perturbative electroweak symmetry breaking, reinforces the Standard Model parameterisation of all subatomic data. The logarithmic evolution of the SM gauge and matter parameters suggests that this parameterisation remains viable up to the Planck scale, where gravitational effects are of comparable strength. String theory provides a perturbatively consistent scheme to explore how the parameters of the Standard Model may be determined from a theory of quantum gravity. The free fermionic heterotic string models provide concrete examples of exact string solutions that reproduce the spectrum of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. Contemporary studies entail the development of methods to classify large classes of models. This led to the discovery of exophobic heterotic-string vacua and the observation of spinor-vector duality, which provides an insight to the global structure of the space of (2,0) heterotic-string vacua. Future directions entail the study of the role of the massive string states in these models and their incorporation in cosmological scenarios. A complementary direction is the formulation of quantum gravity from the principle of manifest phase space duality and the equivalence postulate of quantum mechanics, which suggest that space is compact. The compactness of space, which implies intrinsic regularisation, may be tightly related to the intrinsic finite length scale, implied by string phenomenology.

Energy Quantisation and Time Parameterisation

We show that if space is compact, then trajectories cannot be defined in the framework of quantum Hamilton--Jacobi equation. The starting point is the simple observation that when the energy is quantized it is not possible to make variations with respect to the energy, and the time parameterisation t-t_0=\partial_E S_0, implied by Jacobi's theorem and that leads to group velocity, is ill defined. It should be stressed that this follows directly form the quantum HJ equation without any axiomatic assumption concerning the standard formulation of quantum mechanics. This provides a stringent connection between the quantum HJ equation and the Copenhagen interpretation. Together with tunneling and the energy quantization theorem for confining potentials, formulated in the framework of quantum HJ equation, it leads to the main features of the axioms of quantum mechanics from a unique geometrical principle. Similarly to the case of the classical HJ equation, this fixes its quantum analog by requiring that there exist point transformations, rather than canonical ones, leading to the trivial hamiltonian. This is equivalent to a basic cocycle condition on the states. Such a cocycle condition can be implemented on compact spaces, so that continuous energy spectra are allowed only as a limiting case. Remarkably, a compact space would also imply that the Dirac and von Neumann formulations of quantum mechanics essentially coincide. We suggest that there is a definition of time parameterisation leading to trajectories in the context of the quantum HJ equation having the probabilistic interpretation of the Copenhagen School.

Proton Stability, Gauge Coupling Unification and a Light $Z^\prime$ in Heterotic-string Models

We explore the phenomenological viability of a light Z' in heterotic-string models, whose existence has been motivated by proton stability arguments. A class of quasi-realistic string models that produce such a viable Z' are the Left-Right Symmetric (LRS) heterotic-string models in the free fermionic formulation. A key feature of these models is that the matter charges under U(1)_Z' do not admit an E6 embedding. The light Z' in the LRS heterotic-string models forbids baryon number violating operators, while allowing lepton number violating operators, hence suppressing proton decay yet allowing for sufficiently small neutrino masses via a seesaw mechanism. We show that the constraints imposed by the gauge coupling data and heterotic-string coupling unification nullify the viability of a light Z' in these models. We further argue that agreement with the gauge coupling data necessitates that the U(1)_Z' charges admit an E6 embedding. We discuss how viable string models with this property may be constructed.

The Quantum Closet

The equivalence postulate approach to quantum mechanics entails a derivation of quantum mechanics from a fundamental geometrical principle. Underlying the formalism there exists a basic cocycle condition, which is invariant under D-dimensional finite Mobius transformations. The invariance of the cocycle condition under finite Mobius transformations implies that space is compact. Additionally, it implies energy quantisation and the undefinability of quantum trajectories. I argue that the decompactification limit coincides with the classical limit. Evidence for the compactness of the universe may exist in the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation.

The Equivalence Postulate of Quantum Mechanics, Dark Energy and The Intrinsic Curvature of Elementary Particles

The equivalence postulate of quantum mechanics offers an axiomatic approach to quantum field theories and quantum gravity. The equivalence hypothesis can be viewed as adaptation of the classical Hamilton-Jacobi formalism to quantum mechanics. The construction reveals two key identities that underly the formalism in Euclidean or Minkowski spaces. The first is a cocycle condition, which is invariant under $D$--dimensional Mobius transformations with Euclidean or Minkowski metrics. The second is a quadratic identity which is a representation of the D-dimensional quantum Hamilton--Jacobi equation. In this approach, the solutions of the associated Schrodinger equation are used to solve the nonlinear quantum Hamilton-Jacobi equation. A basic property of the construction is that the two solutions of the corresponding Schrodinger equation must be retained. The quantum potential, which arises in the formalism, can be interpreted as a curvature term. I propose that the quantum potential, which is always non-trivial and is an intrinsic energy term characterising a particle, can be interpreted as dark energy. Numerical estimates of its magnitude show that it is extremely suppressed. In the multi--particle case the quantum potential, as well as the mass, are cumulative.

Classification of Heterotic Pati-Salam Models

We extend the classification of free fermionic heterotic-string models to vacua in which the SO(10) GUT symmetry is broken at the string level to the Pati-Salam subgroup. Using our classification method we recently presented the first example of a quasi--realistic heterotic-string vacuum that is free of massless exotic states. Within this method we are able to derive algebraic expressions for the generalised GSO projections for all sectors that appear in the models. This facilitates the programming of the entire spectrum analysis in a computer code. The total number of vacua in the class of models that we classify is 2^{51} ~ 10^{15}. We perform a statistical sampling in this space of models and extract 10^{11} distinct configurations with Pati-Salam gauge group. Our results demonstrate that one in every 10^{6} vacua correspond to a three generation exophobic model with the required Higgs states, needed to induce spontaneous breaking to the Standard Model.

Conformal Aspects of Spinor-Vector Duality

We present a detailed study of various aspects of Spinor-Vector duality in Heterotic string compactifications and expose its origin in terms of the internal conformal field theory. In particular, we illustrate the main features of the duality map by using simple toroidal orbifolds preserving N_4 = 1 and N_4 = 2 spacetime supersymmetries in four dimensions. We explain how the duality map arises in this context by turning on special values of the Wilson lines around the compact cycles of the manifold. We argue that in models with N_4 = 2 spacetime supersymmetry, the interpolation between the Spinor-Vector dual vacua can be continuously realized. We trace the origin of the Spinor-Vector duality map to the presence of underlying N = (2, 2) and N = (4, 4) SCFTs, and explicitly show that the induced spectral-flow in the twisted sectors is responsible for the observed duality. The isomorphism between current algebra representations gives rise to a number of chiral character identities, reminiscent of the recently-discovered MSDS symmetry.

Leptophobic Z' in Heterotic-String Derived Models

The CDF collaboration's recent observation of an excess of events in the Wjj channel may be attributed to a new Abelian vector boson with suppressed couplings to leptons. While D0 finds no evidence of an excess, the CDF data provide an opportunity to revisit an old result on leptophobic Z' in heterotic-string derived models. We re-examine the conditions for the existence of a leptophobic U(1) symmetry, which arises from a combination of the U(1)_{B-L} symmetry and the horizontal flavour symmetries, to form a universal U(1) symmetry. While the conditions for the existence of a leptophobic combination are not generic, we show that the left-right symmetric free fermionic heterotic-string models also admit a leptophobic combination. In some cases the leptophobic U(1) is augmented by the enhancement of the colour group, along the lines of models proposed by Foot and Hernandez.

On the Equivalence of String Vacua

The heterotic-string models in the free fermionic formulation are among the most realistic string vacua constructed to date, which motivates their detailed exploration. Classification of free fermionic heterotic-string vacua revealed a duality under exchange of spinor and vector representations of the SO(10) GUT symmetry. The spinor-vector duality was subsequently demonstrated in a Z2 X Z2 X Z2 orbifold, in which the map is realised as exchange of discrete torsions. Analysis of the orbifold partition function shows that the duality map preserves the number of massless twisted states. While the dual vacua are distinct from the point of view of the low energy field theory it is suggested that they are equivalent from the string point of view and may be connected by continuous and discrete transformations.

OPERA data and The Equivalence Postulate of Quantum Mechanics

An interpretation of the recent results reported by the OPERA collaboration is that neutrinos propagation in vacuum exceeds the speed of light. It has been further been suggested that this interpretation can be attributed to the variation of the particle speed arising from the Relativistic Quantum Hamilton Jacobi Equation. I show that this is in general not the case. I derive an expression for the quantum correction to the instantaneous relativistic velocity in the framework of the relativistic quantum Hamilton-Jacobi equation, which is derived from the equivalence postulate of quantum mechanics. While the quantum correction does indicate deviations from the classical energy--momentum relation, it does not necessarily lead to superluminal speeds. The quantum correction found herein has a non-trivial dependence on the energy and mass of the particle, as well as on distance travelled. I speculate on other possible observational consequences of the equivalence postulate approach.

Proton Stability and Light $Z^\prime$ Inspired by String Derived Models

Proton stability is one of the most perplexing puzzles in particle physics. While the renormalizable Standard Model forbids proton decay mediating operators due to accidental global symmetries, many of its extensions introduce such dimension four, five and six operators. Furthermore, it is, in general, expected that quantum gravity only respects local gauge, or discreet, symmetries. String theory provides the arena to study particle physics in a consistent framework of perturbative quantum gravity. An appealing proposition, in this context, is that the dangerous operators are suppressed by an Abelian gauge symmetry, which is broken near the TeV scale. A viable U(1) symmetry should also be anomaly free, be family universal, and allow the generation of fermion masses via the Higgs mechanism. We discuss such U(1) symmetries that arise in quasi--realistic free fermionic heterotic--string derived models. Ensuring that the U(1) symmetry is anomaly free at the low scale requires that the Standard Model spectrum is augmented by additional states that are compatible with the charge assignments in the string models. We construct such string--inspired models and discuss some of their phenomenological implications.

T-branes and Yukawa Couplings

We consider various configurations of T-branes which are non-abelian bound states of branes and were recently introduced by Cecotti, Cordova, Heckman and Vafa. They are a refinement of the concept of monodromic branes featured in phenomenological F-theory models. We are particularly interested in the T-branes corresponding to Z3 and Z4 monodromies, which are used to break E7 or E8 gauge groups to SU(5) GUT. Our results imply that the up-type and down-type Yukawa couplings for the breaking of E7 are zero, whereas up-type and down-type Yukawa couplings, together with right handed neutrino Yukawas are non-zero for the case of the breaking of E8. The dimension four proton decay mediating term is avoided in models with either E7 or E8 breaking.

Top Quark Mass in Exophobic Pati--Salam Heterotic String Model

We analyse the phenomenology of an exemplary exophobic Pati-Salam heterotic string vacuum, in which no exotic fractionally charged states exist in the massless string spectrum. Our model also contains the Higgs representations that are needed to break the gauge symmetry to that of the Standard Model and to generate fermion masses at the electroweak scale. We show that the requirement of a leading mass term for the heavy generation, which is not degenerate with the mass terms of the lighter generations, places an additional strong constraint on the viability of the models. In many models a top quark Yukawa may not exist at all, whereas in others two or more generations may obtain a mass term at leading order. In our exemplary model a mass term at leading order exist only for one family. Additionally, we demonstrate the existence of supersymmetric F- and D-flat directions that give heavy mass to all the colour triplets beyond those of the Standard Model and leave one pair of electroweak Higgs doublets light. Hence, below the Pati-Salam breaking scale, the matter states in our model that are charged under the observable gauge symmetries, consist solely of those of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model.

Exophobic Quasi-Realistic Heterotic String Vacua

We demonstrate the existence of heterotic-string vacua that are free of massless exotic fields. The need to break the non-Abelian GUT symmetries in k=1 heterotic-string models by Wilson lines, while preserving the GUT embedding of the weak-hypercharge and the GUT prediction sin^2θ_w(M(GUT))=3/8, necessarily implies that the models contain states with fractional electric charge. Such states are severely restricted by observations, and must be confined or sufficiently massive and diluted. We construct the first quasi-realistic heterotic-string models in which the exotic states do not appear in the massless spectrum, and only exist, as they must, in the massive spectrum. The SO(10) GUT symmetry is broken to the Pati-Salam subgroup. Our PS heterotic-string models contain adequate Higgs representations to break the GUT and electroweak symmetry, as well as colour Higgs triplets that can be used for the missing partner mechanism. By statistically sampling the space of Pati-Salam vacua we demonstrate the abundance of quasi--realistic three generation models that are completely free of massless exotics, rendering it plausible that obtaining realistic Yukawa couplings may be possible in this space of models.

Interpolations Among NAHE-based Supersymmetric and Nonsupersymmetric String Vacua

The quasi-realistic free fermionic heterotic-string models provide some of the most detailed examples to explore the phenomenology of string unification. While providing a powerful tool to generate models and their spectra, understanding the realisation of the free fermion models in a bosonic formalism will provide important insight into their basic properties away from the free fermion point. In this paper we elucidate bosonic equivalent of the basic symmetry breaking pattern in the free fermion models from E8XE8 to SO(16)XSO(16) and exhibit the connection of the free fermion models with corresponding non--supersymmetric vacua by interpolations.

Little heterotic strings

We discuss toroidal orbifolds of the E8XE8 heterotic string, in which the free fermionic Higgs-matter splitting is implemented by a shift in the internal lattice coupled with the fermion numbers of the gauge degrees of freedom. We consider models in which some choices of the orbifold result in the projection of the graviton. In the models that we consider the projection also results in flipping the spin-statistics assignments in the massive string spectrum, whereas the massless spectrum retains the conventional spin-statistics assignments. We argue that the partition functions are mathematically consistent for one- and multi-loop amplitudes, owning to the existence of supersymmetry in the spectrum. A duality between different models at nonzero temperature is briefly discussed.

Z-prime Searches at the LHC: Some QCD Precision Studies in Drell-Yan

Discovery potentials for extra neutral interactions at the Large Hadron Collider in forthcoming experiments are analyzed in Drell-Yan. For this purpose we use high precision next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) determination of the mass invarian distributions and of the total cross sections in the kinematic region around 1 TeV. In this region we explore the possibility to make a preliminary distinction between different anomaly-free extentions of the Standard Model.

Higgs--Matter splitting in quasi-realistic orbifold string GUTs

E6 grand unification combines the Standard Model matter and Higgs states in the single 27 representation. I discuss how the E6 structure underlies the quasi-realistic free fermion heterotic-string models. E6 -> SO(10) X U(1) breaking is obtained by a GSO phase in the N=1 partition function. The equivalence of this symmetry breaking phase with a particular choice of a boundary condition basis vector, which is used in the quasi-realistic models, is demonstrated in several cases. As a result matter states in the spinorial 16 representation of SO(10) arise from the twisted sectors, whereas the Higgs states arise from the untwisted sector. Possible additional phenomenological implications of this E6 symmetry breaking pattern are discussed.

Moduli Fixing in Realistic String Vacua

I illustrate the existence of quasi-realistic heterotic-string models in which all the untwisted Kaehler and complex structure moduli, as well as all of the twisted sectors moduli, are projected out by the generalized GSO projections. I discuss the conditions and characteristics of the models that produce this result. The existence of such models offers a novel perspective on the realization of extra dimensions in string theory. In this view, while the geometrical picture provides a useful mean to classify string vacua, in the phenomenologically viable cases there is no physical realization of extra dimensions. The models under consideration correspond to Z2 X Z2 orbifolds of six dimensional tori, plus additional identifications by internal shifts and twists. The special property of the Z2 X Z2 orbifold is that it may act on the compactified dimensions as real, rather than complex, dimensions. This property enables an asymmetric projection on all six internal coordinates, which enables the projection of all the untwisted Kaehler and complex structure moduli.

On the Number of Chiral Generations in Z2 X Z2 Orbifolds

The data from collider experiments and cosmic observatories indicates the existence of three light matter generations. In some classes of string compactifications the number of generations is related to a topological quantity, the Euler characteristic. However, these do not explain the existence of three generations. In a class of free fermionic string models, related to the Z2 X Z2 orbifold compactification, the existence of three generations is correlated with the existence of three twisted sectors in this class of compactifications. However, the three generation models are constructed in the free fermionic formulation and their geometrical correspondence is not readily available. In this paper we classify quotients of the Z2 X Z2 orbifold by additional symmetric shifts on the three complex tori. We show that three generation vacua are not obtained in this manner, indicating that the geometrical structures underlying the free fermionic models are more esoteric.

String Inspired Neutrino Mass Textures in Light of KamLAND and WMAP

Recent data from astrophysical and terrestrial experiments indicates large mixing angles in the neutral lepton sector and restricts the allowed regions of neutrino masses. In particular, the large mixing angles in the lepton sector are disparate from the small mixing in the quark sector. This disparity is unnatural from the point of view of grand unified theories, that are well motivated by the Standard Model multiplet structure and logarithmic running of its parameters. we examine the issue of this disparity from the perspective of string derived SO(10) GUT models, in which the SO(10) symmetry is broken directly at the string theory level. A characteristic feature of such models is the appearance of numerous SO(10) singlet fields. We propose that the mismatch between the quark and lepton mixing parameters arises due to this extended singlet spectrum and its mixing with the right-handed neutrinos. We discuss a string inspired effective parameterization of the extended neutrino mass matrix and demonstrates that the coupling with the SO(10) singlet spectrum can readily account for the neutrino flavor parameters. The mechanism implies that some SO(10) singlet fields should exist at intermediate mass scales. We study the possibilty of deriving the neutrino mass spectrum from string theory in a specific string derived vacuum solution, and comment on the properties that such a solution should possess.

NAHE-based string models with SU(4) X SU(2) X U(1) SO(10) Subgroup

The orbifold GUT doublet-triplet splitting mechanism was discussed in 1994 in the framework of the NAHE-based free fermionic models in which the SO(10) GUT symmetry is broken to SO(6) X SO(4), SU(3) X SU(2) X U(1)^2, or SU(3) X U(1) X SU(2)^2. In this paper we study NAHE-based free fermionic models in which the SO(10) symmetry is broken at the string level to SU(4) X SU(2) X U(1). In addition to the doublet-triplet splitting this case also has the advantage of inducing the doublet-doublet splitting already at the string level. We demonstrate, however, that NAHE-based models with SU(4) X SU(2) X U(1) SO(10) subgroup are not viable. We show that, similarly to the LRS models, and in contrast to the FSU5, PS and SLM models, the SU421 case gives rise to models without an anomalous U(1) symmetry, and discuss the different cases in terms of their N=4 origins.

Yukawa couplings in SO(10) heterotic M-theory vacua

We demonstrate the existence of a class of N=1 supersymmetric nonperturbative vacua of Horava-Witten M-theory compactified on a torus fibered Calabi-Yau 3-fold Z with first homotopy group π_{1}(Z)= Z2, having the following properties: 1) SO(10) grand unification group, 2) net number of three generations of chiral fermions in the observable sector, and 3) potentially viable matter Yukawa couplings. These vacua correspond to semistable holomorphic vector bundles V_{Z} over Z having structure group SU(4)_C, and generically contain M5-branes in the bulk space. The nontrivial first homotopy group allows Wilson line breaking of the SO(10) symmetry. Additionally, we propose how the 11-dimensional Horava-Witten M-theory framework may be used to extend the perturbative calculation of the top quark Yukawa coupling in the realistic free-fermionic models to the nonperturbative regime. The basic argument being that the relevant coupling couples twisted-twisted-untwisted states and can be calculated at the level of the Z2 X Z2 orbifold without resorting to the full three generation models.

CP violation in realistic String Models with family universal anomalous U(1)

The characteristic property of the Z2XZ2 orbifold compactification is the cyclic permutation symmetry between the three twisted sectors. We discuss how this property, which is retained in a class of realistic free fermionic string models, may be instrumental in enabling fermion mass hierarchy while ensuring sfermion mass degeneracy, irrespective of the dominant source of supersymmetry breaking. The cyclic symmetry is reflected in some models in the existence of a family universal anomalous U(1)_A. We analyze the FCNC and CP violation effects in a model with a dominant U(1)_A SUSY breaking. In this theories, new sources of FC are always suppressed with respect to the average sfermion masses. We make a phenomenological analysis of these effects and find that in most of the cases they are in qualitative agreement with the phenomenological limits. The most sensitive low-energy observables to these new FC sources are the $ε_K$ parameter, measuring indirect CP violation in neutral kaon mixing and EDMs. These observables set important constraints on the structure of the sfermion mass matrices, but do not require a large fine-tuning of the initial parameters and can be satisfied in most realistic constructions.

Partition functions of NAHE-based free fermionic string models

The heterotic string free fermionic formulation produced a large class of three generation models, with an underlying SO(10) GUT symmetry which is broken directly at the string level by Wilson lines. A common subset of boundary condition basis vectors in these models is the NAHE set, which corresponds to Z2 X Z2 orbifold of an SO(12) Narain lattice, with (h11,h21)=(27,3). Alternatively, a manifold with the same data is obtained by starting with a Z2 X Z2 orbifold at a generic point on the lattice, with (h11,h21)=(51,3), and adding a freely acting Z2 involution. The equivalence of the two constructions is proven by examining the relevant partition functions. The explicit realization of the shift that reproduces the compactification at the free fermionic point is found. It is shown that other closely related shifts reproduce the same massless spectrum, but different massive spectrum, thus demonstrating the utility of extracting information from the full partition function. A freely acting involution of the type discussed here, enables the use of Wilson lines to break the GUT symmetry and can be utilized in non-perturbative studies of the free fermionic models.

Susy QCD and High Energy Cosmic Rays 1. Fragmentation functions of Susy QCD

The supersymmetric evolution of the fragmentation functions (or timelike evolution) within N=1 $QCD$ is discussed and predictions for the fragmentation functions of the theory (into final protons) are given. We use a backward running of the supersymmetric DGLAP equations, using a method developed in previous works. We start from the usual QCD parameterizations at low energy and run the DGLAP back, up to an intermediate scale -assumed to be supersymmetric- where we switch-on supersymmetry. From there on we assume the applicability of an N=1 supersymmetric evolution (ESAP). We elaborate on possible application of these results to High Energy Cosmic Rays near the GZK cutoff.

Doublet-Triplet Splitting in Realistic Heterotic String Derived models

There has been recently a surge of interest in Grand Unified Theories on orbifolds of higher dimensional spaces. In particular, the higher dimensional doublet-triplet splitting mechanism has been of much interest. I revisit the superstring doublet-triplet splitting mechanism in which the color triplets are projected out by the GSO projections, while leaving the electroweak doublets in the physical spectrum. The connection with the higher dimensional theories is elucidated. It is shown that the doublet-triplet splitting depends crucially on the assignment of boundary conditions in the compactified directions.

Duality, Equivalence, Mass and The Quest For The Vacuum

I contemplate the possibility that the mismatch between the maximally symmetric point (the free fermionic point) and the strictly self-dual point in the Narain moduli space plays a role in the string vacuum selection. The role of self-duality in the recent formulation of quantum mechanics from an equivalence postulate, and the new perspective that it offers on the foundations of quantum gravity and the origin of mass, are discussed.

Self-Interacting Dark Matter from the Hidden Heterotic-String Sector

It has been suggested recently that self-interacting dark matter fits better the observational characteristics of galaxy dynamics. We propose that the self-interacting dark matter is composed from the glueballs of the hidden sector non-Abelian gauge group, while the hidden matter states exist in vector-like representation and decouple from the light spectrum. It is shown that these glueballs are semi-stable with the life-time larger than the present age of the Universe, if their mass is 1 GeV or less. The constraint on their abundance today suggests that the energy was stored in the hidden sector soon after inflation. This imposes an upper limit on the reheating temperature. We further study the naturalness of this scenario in the context of the free-fermionic string models and point out a class of such models where the self-interacting dark matter from the hidden sector is indeed plausible.

Phenomenological Issues in TeV scale Gravity with Light Neutrino Masses

The possible existence of bulk singlet neutrinos in the scenario with large compactified dimensions and low string scale $M_*$ has important consequences for low-energy observables. We demonstrate that intergenerational mass splitting and mixing lead to the effective violation of the lepton universality and flavor changing processes in charged lepton sector. Current experimental constraints push $M_*$ to the scale of 10 TeV over most of the interesting range for neutrino mass splitting.

The Equivalence Postulate of Quantum Mechanics

The Equivalence Principle (EP), stating that all physical systems are connected by a coordinate transformation to the free one with vanishing energy, univocally leads to the Quantum Stationary HJ Equation (QSHJE). Trajectories depend on the Planck length through hidden variables which arise as initial conditions. The formulation has manifest p-q duality, a consequence of the involutive nature of the Legendre transform and of its recently observed relation with second-order linear differential equations. This reflects in an intrinsic psi^D-psi duality between linearly independent solutions of the Schroedinger equation. Unlike Bohm's theory, there is a non-trivial action even for bound states. No use of any axiomatic interpretation of the wave-function is made. Tunnelling is a direct consequence of the quantum potential which differs from the usual one and plays the role of particle's self-energy. The QSHJE is defined only if the ratio psi^D/psi is a local self-homeomorphism of the extended real line. This is an important feature as the L^2 condition, which in the usual formulation is a consequence of the axiomatic interpretation of the wave-function, directly follows as a basic theorem which only uses the geometrical gluing conditions of psi^D/psi at q=\pm\infty as implied by the EP. As a result, the EP itself implies a dynamical equation that does not require any further assumption and reproduces both tunnelling and energy quantization. Several features of the formulation show how the Copenhagen interpretation hides the underlying nature of QM. Finally, the non-stationary higher dimensional quantum HJ equation and the relativistic extension are derived.

Family Universal Anomalous U(1) in Realistic Superstring Derived Models

An important issue in supersymmetry phenomenology is the suppression of squarks contributions to Flavor Changing Neutral Currents (FCNC). Recently it was noted that in some free fermionic three generation models the anomalous U(1) is family universal. It was further shown that if the $D$--term of the $U(1)_A$ is the dominant source of supersymmetry breaking, the squark masses are indeed approximately degenerate. In this paper I discuss the properties of the superstring models that give rise to the flavor universal anomalous U(1). The root cause for the universal $U(1)_A$ is the cyclic permutation symmetry, the characteristic property of the $Z_2\times Z_2$ orbifold compactification, realized in the free fermionic models by the NAHE set of boundary condition basis vectors. The properties of the three generation models that preserve this cyclic permutation symmetry in the flavor charges are discussed. The cyclic permutation symmetry of the $Z_2\times Z_2$ orbifold compactification is proposed to be the characteristic property, of phenomenological interest, that distinguishes it from other classes of superstring compactifications.

Meeting the Constraint of Neutrino-Higgsino Mixing in Gravity Unified Theories

In Gravity Unified Theories all operators that are consistent with the local gauge and discrete symmetries are expected to arise in the effective low-energy theory. Given the absence of multiplets like 126 of SO(10) in string models, and assuming that B-L is violated spontaneously to generate light neutrino masses via a seesaw mechanism, it is observed that string theory solutions generically face the problem of producing an excessive $ν_L-{\tilde H}$ mixing mass at the GUT scale, which is some nineteen orders of magnitude larger than the experimental bound of 1 MeV. The suppression of $ν_L-{\tilde H}$ mixing, like proton longevity, thus provides one of the most severe constraints on the validity of any string theory solution. We examine this problem in a class of superstring derived models. We find a family of solutions within this class for which the symmetries of the models and an allowed pattern of VEVs, surprisingly, succeed in adequately suppressing the neutrino-Higgsino mixing terms. At the same time they produce the terms required to generate small neutrino masses via a seesaw mechanism.

A Statistical Interpretation of Space and Classical-Quantum duality

By defining a prepotential function for the stationary Schrödinger equation we derive an inversion formula for the space variable $x$ as a function of the wave-function $ψ$. The resulting equation is a Legendre transform that relates $x$, the prepotential ${\cal F}$, and the probability density. We invert the Schrödinger equation to a third-order differential equation for ${\cal F}$ and observe that the inversion procedure implies a $x$-$ψ$ duality. This phenomenon is related to a modular symmetry due to the superposition of the solutions of the Schrödinger equation. We propose that in quantum mechanics the space coordinate can be interpreted as a macroscopic variable of a statistical system with $\hbar$ playing the role of a scaling parameter. We show that the scaling property of the space coordinate with respect to $τ=\partial_ψ^2{\cal F}$ is determined by the ``beta-function''. We propose that the quantization of the inversion formula is a natural way to quantize geometry. The formalism is extended to higher dimensions and to the Klein-Gordon equation.

Calculating Fermion masses in Superstring Derived Standard-like Models

I discuss the calculation of the heavy generation masses in the superstring derived standard-like models. The top quark Yukawa coupling is obtained from a cubic level mass term while the bottom quark and tau lepton mass terms are obtained from nonrenormalizable terms. The calculation of the heavy fermion Yukawa couplings is outlined in detail in a specific toy model. The dependence of the effective bottom quark and tau lepton Yukawa couplings on the flat directions at the string scale is examined. The gauge and Yukawa couplings are extrapolated from the string unification scale to low energies. Agreement with $α_{strong}$, $sin^2θ_W$ and $α_{em}$ at M_Z is imposed, which necessitates the existence of intermediate matter thresholds. The needed intermediate matter thresholds exist in the specific toy model. The effect of the intermediate matter thresholds on the extrapolated Yukawa couplings in studied. It is observed that the intermediate matter thresholds also help to maintain the correct $b/τ$ mass relation. It is found that for a large portion of the parameter space that the LEP precision data for $α_{strong}$, $sin^2θ_W$ and $α_{em}$, as well as the top quark mass and the $b/τ$ mass relation can all simultaneously be consistent with the superstring derived standard-like models. Possible corrections due to the supersymmetric mass spectrum are studied as well as the minimization of the supersymmetric Higgs potential. It is demonstrated that the calculated values of the Higgs VEV ratio, $tanβ=v_1/v_2$, can be compatible with the minimization of the one-loop effective Higgs potential.

Leptophobic Z' from Superstring Derived Models

It was recently suggested that the reported anomalies in $R_b$ and $R_c$ can be interpreted as the effect of a heavy vector boson that couples to quarks and is universally decoupled from leptons. We examine how an extra gauge boson with this property can arise from superstring derived models. In a specific three generation model we show that the $U(1)_{B-L}$ symmetry combines with the horizontal flavor symmetries to form a universal leptophobic $U(1)$ symmetry. In our model there is an enhancement of the color gauge group from twisted sectors. The enhancement occurs after the breaking of the unifying gauge symmetry by ``Wilson lines''. The leptophobic $U(1)$ symmetry then becomes a generator of the color $SU(4)$ gauge group. We examine how similar symmetries may appear in other string models without the enhancement. We propose that if the current LEP anomalies persist it may be evidence for a certain class of un--unified superstring models.

Cabibbo--Kobayashi--Maskawa Mixing in Superstring Derived Standard--like Models

We examine the problem of three generation quark flavor mixing in realistic, superstring derived standard--like models, constructed in the free fermionic formulation. We study the sources of family mixing in these models and discuss the necessary conditions to obtain a realistic Cabibbo--Kobayashi--Maskawa (CKM) mixing matrix. In a specific model, we estimate the mixing angles and discuss the weak CP violating phase. We argue that the superstring standard--like models can produce a realistic CKM mixing matrix. We discuss the possible textures of quark mass matrices that may be obtained in these models.

Light Threshold Effects in Supersymmetric Grand Unified Theories

Supersymmetric Grand Unified Theories have a rich spectrum of particles barely heavier than the intermediate vector bosons. As their non-supersymmetric counterparts, they lead to many relations among low energy observables. But the precise form of the predictions is modified by the extended spectrum. If the masses of these new particles are comparable to $M_Z$, the standard computation of their effect becomes inaccurate. We present a detail discussion of the correct procedure, and carry out the relevant computations to one loop order. The procedure we propose has the advantage over other existing methods that two-loop running of gauge couplings can be incorporated readily and consistently. Attention is paid to the special treatment that the top and Higgs particles must receive. The size of the effect is explored for a range of parameters in the minimal supersymmetric $SU(5)$ grand-unified theory with radiative breaking. It is found that the naive (leading-log) computation can be fairly inaccurate.

Neutrino Masses in Superstring Derived Standard--like Models

We propose a new scenario in a class of superstring derived standard--like models that explains the suppression of the left--handed neutrino masses. Due to nonrenormalizable terms and the breaking of the $U(1)_{Z^\prime}$ symmetry a generalized see--saw mechanism takes place. Contrary to the traditional see--saw mechanism in GUTs, the see--saw scale and the right--handed neutrino mass scale are suppressed relative to the $U(1)_{Z^\prime}$ breaking scale.

Z_2\times Z_2$ orbifold compactification as the origin of realistic free fermionic models

I discuss the correspondence between realistic four dimensional free fermionic models and $Z_2\times Z_2$ orbifold compactification. %I illustrate this correspondence for one particular example. I discuss the properties of the $Z_2\times Z_2$ orbifold that are reflected in the realistic free fermionic models. I argue that the properties of the realistic free fermionic models arise due to the underlying $Z_2\times Z_2$ orbifold compactification with nontrivial background fields. I suggest that three generation is a natural outcome of $Z_2\times Z_2$ orbifold compactification with ``standard embedding'' and at the point in compactification space that corresponds to the free fermionic formulation. I discuss how quark flavor mixing is related to the compactification.
