CFT description of BH's and ECO's: QNMs, superradiance, echoes and tidal responses

Using conformal field theory and localization tecniques we study the propagation of waves in gravity backgrounds described by Schrödinger like equations with Fuchsian singularities. Exact formulae for the connection matrices relating the asymptotic behaviour of the wave functions near the singularities are obtained in terms of braiding and fusion rules of the CFT. The results are applied to the study of quasi normal modes, absorption cross sections, amplification factors, echoes and tidal responses of black holes (BH) and exotic compact objects (ECO) in four and five dimensions. In particular, we propose a definition of dynamical Love numbers in gravity.

OPE coefficients in Argyres-Douglas theories

The calculation of physical quantities in certain quantum field theories such as those of the Argyres-Douglas type is notoriously hard, due to the lack of a Lagrangian description. Here we tackle this problem following two alternative approaches. On the one hand, we use localization on the four-sphere to compute two-correlators and OPE coefficients in Argyres-Douglas superconformal theories. On the other hand, we use the conformal bootstrap machinery to put stringent bounds on such coefficients, only relying on the knowledge of central charge and conformal dimension of the operators. We compare the results obtained with these two methods and find good agreement for all rank-one cases and for the rank-two Argyres-Douglas theories (A_1,A_4) and (A_1,A_5), in the moduli space of pure SU(5) and SU(6) super Yang-Mills. We also apply our results from localization to obtain bounds on the dimensions of the lightest neutral unprotected operators of the CFTs.

Exact results in N=2 gauge theories

We derive exact formulae for the partition function and the expectation values of Wilson/'t Hooft loops, thus directly checking their S-duality transformations. We focus on a special class of N=2 gauge theories on S^4 with fundamental matter. In particular we show that, for a specific choice of the masses, the matrix model integral defining the gauge theory partition function localizes around a finite set of critical points where it can be explicitly evaluated and written in terms of generalized hypergeometric functions. From the AGT perspective the gauge theory partition function, evaluated with this choice of masses, is viewed as a four point correlator involving the insertion of a degenerated field. The well known simplicity of the degenerated correlator reflects the fact that for these choices of masses only a very restrictive type of instanton configurations contributes to the gauge theory partition function.

U-folds as K3 fibrations

We study N=2 four-dimensional flux vacua describing intrinsic non-perturbative systems of 3 and 7 branes in type IIB string theory. The solutions are described as compactifications of a G(ravity) theory on a Calabi Yau threefold which consists of a fibration of an auxiliary K3 surface over an S^2 base. In the spirit of F-theory, the complex structure of the K3 surface varying over the base codifies the details of the fluxes, the dilaton and the warp factors in type IIB string theory. We discuss in detail some simple examples of geometric and non-geometric solutions where the precise flux/geometry dictionary can be explicitly worked out. In particular, we describe non-geometric T-fold solutions exhibiting non-trivial T-duality monodromies exchanging 3- and 7-branes.

Asymmetry at LHC for an U(1)' anomalous extension of MSSM

The measurement of the forward-backward asymmetry at LHC could be an important instrument to pinpoint the features of extra neutral gauge particles obtained by an extension of the gauge symmetry group of the standard model. For definitiveness, in this work we consider an extension of the gauge group of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model by an extra anomalous U(1) gauge symmetry (MiAUMSSM). We focus on pp -> e+e- at LHC and use four different definitions of the asymmetry obtained implementing four different cuts on the directions and momenta of the final states of our process of interest. The calculations are performed without imposing constraints on the charges of the extra Z's of our model, since the anomaly is cancelled by a Green-Schwarz type mechanism. Our final result is a fit of our data with a polynomial in the charges from which to extract the values of the charges given the experimental result.

Deformed Seiberg-Witten Curves for ADE Quivers

We derive Seiberg-Witten like equations encoding the dynamics of N=2 ADE quiver gauge theories in presence of a non-trivial Omega-background along a two dimensional plane. The epsilon-deformed prepotential and the chiral correlators of the gauge theory are extracted from difference equations that can be thought as a non-commutative (or quantum) version of the Seiberg-Witten curves for the quiver.

Dark Matter in Anomalous $U(1)'$ Models with neutral mixing

We study the lightest masses in the fermionic sector of an anomalous $U(1)'$ extension of the minimal supersymmetric standard model inspired by brane constructions. The LSP of this model is an XWIMP (extremely weak interaction particle) which is shown to have a relic density satisfying WMAP data. This computation is carried out numerically after having adapted the DarkSUSY package to our case.

Stringy instanton corrections to N=2 gauge couplings

We discuss a string model where a conformal four-dimensional N=2 gauge theory receives corrections to its gauge kinetic functions from "stringy" instantons. These contributions are explicitly evaluated by exploiting the localization properties of the integral over the stringy instanton moduli space. The model we consider corresponds to a setup with D7/D3-branes in type I' theory compactified on T4/Z2 x T2, and possesses a perturbatively computable heterotic dual. In the heteoric side the corrections to the quadratic gauge couplings are provided by a 1-loop threshold computation and, under the duality map, match precisely the first few stringy instanton effects in the type I' setup. This agreement represents a very non-trivial test of our approach to the exotic instanton calculus.

Stückelino Dark Matter in Anomalous U(1)' Models

We study a possible dark matter candidate in the framework of a minimal anomalous $U(1)'$ extension of the MSSM. It turns out that in a suitable decoupling limit the Stückelino, the fermionic degree of freedom of the Stückelberg multiplet, is the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP). We compute the relic density of this particle including coannihilations with the next to lightest supersymmetric particle (NLSP) and with the next to next to lightest supersymmetric particle (NNLSP) which are assumed almost degenerate in mass. This assumption is needed in order to satisfy the stringent limits that the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) puts on the relic density. We find that the WMAP constraints can be satisifed by different NLSP and NNLSP configurations as a function of the mass gap with the LSP. These results hold in the parameter space region where the model remains perturbative.

Instantons on Quivers and Orientifolds

We compute the prepotential for gauge theories descending from ${\cal N}=4$ SYM via quiver projections and mass deformations. This accounts for gauge theories with product gauge groups and bifundamental matter. The case of massive orientifold gauge theories with gauge group SO/Sp is also described. In the case with no gravitational corrections the results are shown to be in agreement with Seiberg-Witten analysis and previous results in the literature.

The Galactic Center as a Dark Matter Gamma-Ray Source

The EGRET telescope has identified a gamma-ray source at the Galactic center. We point out here that the spectral features of this source are compatible with the gamma-ray flux induced by pair annihilations of dark matter weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs). We show that the discrimination between this interpretation and other viable explanations will be possible with GLAST, the next major gamma-ray telescope in space, on the basis of both the spectral and the angular signature of the WIMP-induced component. If, on the other hand, the data will point to an alternative explanation, we prove that there will still be the possibility for GLAST to single out a weaker dark matter source at the Galactic center. The potential of GLAST has been explored both in the context of a generic simplified toy-model for WIMP dark matter, and in a more specific setup, the case of dark matter neutralinos in the minimal supergravity framework. In the latter, we find that even in the case of moderate dark matter densities in the Galactic center region, there are portions of the parameter space which will be probed by GLAST.

Superlocalization formulas and supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories

By using supermanifold techniques we prove a generalization of the localization formula in equivariant cohomology which is suitable for studying supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories in terms of ADHM data. With these techniques one can compute the reduced partition functions of topological super Yang-Mills theory with 4, 8 or 16 supercharges. More generally, the superlocalization formula can be applied to any topological field theory in any number of dimensions.

D-instanton probes of N=2 non-conformal geometries

D-instanton calculus has proved to be able to probe the AdS near horizon geometry for $N$ D-branes systems which, when decoupled from gravity, yield four dimensional superconformal gauge theories with various matter content. In this work we extend previous analysis to encompass fractional brane models which give rise to non conformal N=2 Super Yang-Mills theories. Via D-instanton calculus we study the geometry of such models for finite $N$ and recover the $β$ function of the gauge coupling constants which is expected in non conformal gauge theories. We also give a topological matrix theory formulation for the D-instanton action of these theories. Finally, we revisit the related system where the D3-branes wrap a ${\real}^4/{\zet}_p$ orbifold singularity and the D(-1) branes are associated to instanton solutions of four-dimensional gauge theories in the blown down ALE space.

Non-holomorphic terms in N=2 SUSY Wilsonian actions and RG equation

In this paper we first investigate the Ansatz of one of the present authors for K(Ψ,\barΨ), the adimensional modular invariant non-holomorphic correction to the Wilsonian effective Lagrangian of an N=2 globally supersymmetric gauge theory. The renormalisation group beta-function of the theory crucially allows us to express K(Ψ,\barΨ) in a form that easily generalises to the case in which the theory is coupled to N_F hypermultiplets in the fundamental representation of the gauge group. This function satisfies an equation which should be viewed as a fully non-perturbative ``non-chiral superconformal Ward identity". We also determine its renormalisation group equation. Furthermore, as a first step towards checking the validity of this Ansatz, we compute the contribution to K(Ψ,\barΨ) from instantons of winding number k=1 and k=2. As a by-product of our analysis we check a non-renormalisation theorem for N_F=4.

Explicit Construction of Yang-Mills Instantons on ALE Spaces

We describe the explicit construction of Yang-Mills instantons on ALE spaces, following the work of Kronheimer and Nakajima. For multicenter ALE metrics, we determine the abelian instanton connections which are needed for the construction in the non-abelian case. We compute the partition function of Maxwell theories on ALE manifolds and comment on the issue of electromagnetic duality. We discuss the topological characterization of the instanton bundles as well as the identification of their moduli spaces. We generalize the 't Hooft ansatz to SU(2) instantons on ALE spaces and on other hyper-Kahler manifolds. Specializing to the Eguchi-Hanson gravitational background, we explicitly solve the ADHM equations for SU(2) gauge bundles with second Chern class 1/2, 1 and 3/2.
