NNLO constraints on proton PDFs from the SeaQuest and STAR experiments and other developments in the CTEQ-TEA global analysis

We review progress in the global QCD analysis by the CTEQ-TEA group since the publication of CT18 parton distribution functions (PDFs) in the proton. Specifically, we discuss comparisons of CT18 NNLO predictions with the LHC 13 TeV measurements as well as with the FNAL SeaQuest and BNL STAR data on lepton pair production. The specialized CT18X PDFs approximating saturation effects are compared with the CT18sx PDFs obtained using NLL/NLO small-$x$ resummation. Short summaries are presented for the special CT18 parton distributions with fitted charm and with lattice QCD inputs. A recent comparative analysis of the impact of deuteron nuclear effects on the parton distributions by the CTEQ-JLab and CTEQ-TEA groups is summarized.

Probing heavy-flavor parton distribution functions at hadron colliders

Precision measurements of heavy-flavor hadroproduction at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) have the ability to probe heavy-flavor parton distribution functions (PDFs) in the proton. Sensitivity of inclusive $B^\pm$ meson production cross section measurements at LHCb 13 TeV to the bottom-quark PDF is illustrated by using theory predictions obtained with a the S-ACOT-MPS general mass variable flavor number (GMVFN) scheme within the QCD factorization formula. This approach can easily be extended to other heavy-flavor production processes, such as $Z$ boson production in association with a bottom- or a charm-jet. The inclusion of such measurements will represent an important improvement for future global QCD analyses that aim at reducing uncertainties of heavy-flavor PDFs, provided that a consistent general mass treatment in $pp$ collisions is used. This work is related to the activities of the Snowmass topic groups EF03, and EF06.

The Forward Physics Facility: Sites, Experiments, and Physics Potential

The Forward Physics Facility (FPF) is a proposal to create a cavern with the space and infrastructure to support a suite of far-forward experiments at the Large Hadron Collider during the High Luminosity era. Located along the beam collision axis and shielded from the interaction point by at least 100 m of concrete and rock, the FPF will house experiments that will detect particles outside the acceptance of the existing large LHC experiments and will observe rare and exotic processes in an extremely low-background environment. In this work, we summarize the current status of plans for the FPF, including recent progress in civil engineering in identifying promising sites for the FPF and the experiments currently envisioned to realize the FPF's physics potential. We then review the many Standard Model and new physics topics that will be advanced by the FPF, including searches for long-lived particles, probes of dark matter and dark sectors, high-statistics studies of TeV neutrinos of all three flavors, aspects of perturbative and non-perturbative QCD, and high-energy astroparticle physics.

$tW$ and $tZ'$ production at hadron colliders

We present theoretical results with soft-gluon corrections for two separate processes: (1) the production of a single top quark in association with a $W$ boson in the Standard Model; and (2) the production of a single top quark in association with a heavy $Z'$ boson in new physics models with or without anomalous couplings. We show that the higher-order corrections from soft-gluon emission are dominant for a wide range of collider energies. Results are shown for the total cross sections and top-quark transverse-momentum and rapidity distributions for $tW$ and $tZ'$ production at LHC and future collider energies up to 100 TeV. The uncertainties from scale dependence and parton distribution functions are also analyzed.

$tZ'$ production at hadron colliders

We study the production of a single top quark in association with a heavy extra $Z'$ at hadron colliders in new physics models with and without flavor-changing neutral-current (FCNC) couplings. We use QCD soft-gluon resummation and threshold expansions to calculate higher-order corrections for the total cross section and transverse-momentum distributions for $t Z'$ production. The impact of the uncertainties due to the structure of the proton and scale dependence is also analyzed.

Groomed jet mass as a direct probe of collinear parton dynamics

We study the link between parton dynamics in the collinear limit and the logarithmically enhanced terms of the groomed jet mass distribution, for jets groomed with the modified mass-drop tagger (mMDT). While the leading-logarithmic (LL) result is linked to collinear evolution with leading-order splitting kernels, here we derive the NLL structure directly from triple-collinear splitting kernels. The calculation we present is a fixed-order calculation in the triple-collinear limit, independent of resummation ingredients and methods. It therefore constitutes a powerful cross-check of the NLL results previously derived using the SCET formalism and provides much of the insight needed for resummation within the traditional QCD approach.

New CTEQ global analysis of quantum chromodynamics with high-precision data from the LHC

We present the new parton distribution functions (PDFs) from the CTEQ-TEA collaboration, obtained using a wide variety of high-precision Large Hadron Collider (LHC) data, in addition to the combined HERA I+II deep-inelastic scattering data set, along with the data sets present in the CT14 global QCD analysis. New LHC measurements in single-inclusive jet production with the full rapidity coverage, as well as production of Drell-Yan pairs, top-quark pairs, and high-$p_T$ $Z$ bosons, are included to achieve the greatest sensitivity to the PDFs. The parton distributions are determined at NLO and NNLO, with each of these PDFs accompanied by error sets determined using the Hessian method. Fast PDF survey techniques, based on the Hessian representation and the Lagrange Multiplier method, are used to quantify the preference of each data set to quantities such as $α_s(m_Z)$, and the gluon and strange quark distributions. We designate the main resulting PDF set as CT18. The ATLAS 7 TeV precision $W/Z$ data are not included in CT18, due to their tension with other data sets in the global fit. Alternate PDF sets are generated including the ATLAS precision 7 TeV $W/Z$ data (CT18A), a new scale choice for low-$x$ DIS data (CT18X), or all of the above with a slightly higher choice for the charm mass (CT18Z). Theoretical calculations of standard candle cross sections at the LHC (such as the $gg$ fusion Higgs boson cross section) are presented.

New parton distribution functions from a global analysis of quantum chromodynamics

We present new parton distribution functions (PDFs) up to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) from the CTEQ-TEA global analysis of quantum chromodynamics. These differ from previous CT PDFs in several respects, including the use of data from LHC experiments and the new D0 charged lepton rapidity asymmetry data, as well as the use of more flexible parametrization of PDFs that, in particular, allows a better fit to different combinations of quark flavors. Predictions for important LHC processes, especially Higgs boson production at 13 TeV, are presented. These CT14 PDFs include a central set and error sets in the Hessian representation. For completeness, we also present the CT14 PDFs determined at the leading order (LO) and the next-to-leading order (NLO) in QCD. Besides these general-purpose PDF sets, we provide a series of (N)NLO sets with various $α_s$ values and additional sets in general-mass variable flavor number (GM-VFN) schemes, to deal with heavy partons, with up to 3, 4, and 6 active flavors.

DIS2015 Heavy Flavours Working Group Summary

Studies presented in the heavy flavours working group are summarized. Very recent results of measurements at the HERA, LHC, Tevatron, STAR, PHENIX, and BaBar experiments are reviewed and new developments in theory and phenomenology are discussed. In particular, aspects of the impact of heavy flavours on global QCD analyses to determine the structure of the proton, and analyses in physics beyond the Standard Model are considered.

Extra $Z^\prime$s and $W^\prime$s in Heterotic--String Derived Models

The ATLAS collaboration recently recorded possible excess in the di--boson production at the di--boson invariant mass at around 2 TeV. Such an excess may be produced if there exist additional $Z^\prime$ and/or $W^\prime$ at that scale. We survey the extra $Z^\prime$s and $W^\prime$s that may arise from semi--realistic heterotic string vacua in the free fermionic formulation in seven distinct cases including: $U(1)_{Z^\prime}\in SO(10)$; family universal $U(1)_{Z^\prime}$ not in $SO(10)$; non--universal $U(1)_{Z^\prime}$; hidden sector $U(1)$ symmetries and kinetic mixing; left--right symmetric models; Pati--Salam models; leptophobic and custodial symmetries. Each case has a distinct signature associated with the extra symmetry breaking scale. In one of the cases we explore the discovery potential at the LHC using resonant leptoproduction. Existence of extra vector boson with the reported properties will significantly constrain the space of allowed string vacua.

Impact of heavy-flavour production cross sections measured by the LHCb experiment on parton distribution functions at low x

The impact of recent measurements of heavy-flavour production in deep inelastic $ep$ scattering and in $pp$ collisions on parton distribution functions is studied in a QCD analysis in the fixed-flavour number scheme at next-to-leading order. Differential cross sections of charm- and beauty-hadron production measured by LHCb are used together with inclusive and heavy-flavour production cross sections in deep inelastic scattering at HERA. The heavy-flavour data of the LHCb experiment impose additional constraints on the gluon and the sea-quark distributions at low partonic fractions $x$ of the proton momentum, down to $x \sim 5 \times 10^{-6}$. This kinematic range is currently not covered by other experimental data in perturbative QCD fits.

Top-quark pair production at hadron colliders: differential cross section and phenomenological applications with DiffTop

The results of phenomenological studies of top-quark pair production in proton-proton collisions are presented. Differential cross sections are calculated in perturbative QCD at approximate next-to-next-to-leading order ${\cal O}(α_s^4)$ by using methods of threshold resummation beyond the leading logarithmic accuracy. Predictions for the single-particle inclusive kinematics are presented for transverse momentum and rapidity distributions of final-state top quarks. Uncertainties related to the description of proton structure, top-quark mass and strong coupling constant are investigated in detail. The results are compared to the recent measurements by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations at the LHC at the center of mass energy of 7 TeV. The calculation presented here is implemented in the computer code \textsc{Difftop} and can be applied to the general case of heavy-quark pair production at hadron-hadron colliders. For the first time, a fit of parton distribution functions at NNLO is performed by using the differential cross sections of top-quark pair production together with other data sets. The impact of the top-pair production on the precision of the gluon distribution at high scales is illustrated.

Differential cross sections for top pair production at the LHC

We present results of phenomenological studies for top-quark pair production at the LHC at the center of mass energy $\sqrt{S} = 7$ TeV. The transverse momentum and rapidity distributions for final-state top quarks are calculated in perturbative QCD at approximate next-to-next-to-leading order ${\cal O}(α_s^4)$ by using methods of threshold resummation beyond the leading logarithmic accuracy. The theoretical predictions are obtained by using the computer code \textsc{DiffTop} and are compared to recent measurements by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations. \textsc{Difftop} can be employed in the general case of heavy-quark pair production at hadron-hadron colliders and provides a basis for applications in QCD analyses for parton distribution functions determination.

Nonperturbative contributions to a resummed leptonic angular distribution in inclusive neutral vector boson production

We present an analysis of nonperturbative contributions to the transverse momentum distribution of $Z/γ^*$ bosons produced at hadron colliders. The new data on the angular distribution $ϕ^*_η$ of Drell-Yan pairs measured at the Tevatron is shown to be in excellent agreement with a perturbative QCD prediction based on the Collins-Soper-Sterman (CSS) resummation formalism at NNLL accuracy. Using these data, we determine the nonperturbative component of the CSS resummed cross section and estimate its dependence on arbitrary resummation scales and other factors. With the scale dependence included at the NNLL level, a significant nonperturbative component is needed to describe the angular data.

The CT10 NNLO Global Analysis of QCD

We present next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) parton distribution functions (PDFs) from the CTEQ-TEA group. The CT10NNLO PDF fit is based on essentially the same global data sets used in the CT10 and CT10W NLO PDF analyses. After exploring the goodness of the fits to the HERA combined data and the Tevatron jet data, we present various predictions at NNLO accuracy for both existing and forthcoming precision measurements from the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The range of variations in the gluon distribution introduced by correlated systematic effects in inclusive jet production is also examined.

Charm quark mass dependence in a global QCD analysis

We study the effect of the charm quark mass in the CTEQ global analysis of parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton. Constraints on the $\bar{\rm MS}$ mass of the charm quark are examined at the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) accuracy in the S-ACOT-$χ$ heavy-quark factorization scheme. The value of the charm quark mass from the hadronic scattering data in the CT10 NNLO fit, including semiinclusive charm production in DIS at HERA collider, is found to agree with the world average value. Various approaches for constraining $m_{c}$ in the global analysis and impact on LHC cross sections are reviewed.

preprint2013arXiv

Charm quark mass dependence in the CTEQ NNLO global QCD analysis

We discuss the impact of the charm quark mass in the CTEQ NNLO global analysis of parton distribution functions of the proton. The $\bar{\rm MS}$ mass $m_c(m_c)$ of the charm quark is extracted in the S-ACOT-$χ$ heavy-quark factorization scheme at ${\cal O}(α_s^2)$ accuracy and found to be in agreement with the world-average value. Impact on $m_c(m_c)$ of combined HERA-1 data on semiinclusive charm production at HERA collider and contributing systematic uncertainties are reviewed.

Nonperturbative contributions to a resummed leptonic angular distribution in inclusive $Z/γ^*$ boson production

We summarize a new analysis of the distribution $ϕ_η^{*}$ of charged leptons produced in decays of $Z$ and $γ^{*}$ bosons in the Collins-Soper-Sterman (CSS) formalism for transverse momentum resummation. By comparing the $ϕ_η^{*}$ distribution measured at the Tevatron with the resummed CSS cross section with approximate ${\cal O}(α_{s}^{2})$ Wilson coefficients, we constrain the magnitude of the nonperturbative Gaussian smearing factor and analyze its uncertainty caused by variations in scale parameters. We find excellent agreement between the $ϕ_η^{*}$ data and our theoretical prediction, provided by the \textsc{ResBos} resummation program. The nonperturbative factor that we obtained can be used to update resummed QCD predictions for precision measurements in inclusive $W$ and $Z$ production and for comparisons to various models of nonperturbative dynamics.

Top-quark production at the LHC: differential cross section and phenomenological applications

We discuss top-quark pair production at hadron colliders and review available calculations of differential top-pair production cross section in perturbative QCD at approximate next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) within the threshold resummation formalism. These calculations are implemented into an open source program under development. We present phenomenological studies at the LHC that include transverse momentum and rapidity distribution of the top quarks at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. Preliminary results obtained with this program are in very good agreement with the recent LHC measurements.

General-mass treatment for deep inelastic scattering at two-loop accuracy

We present a next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) realization of a general quark mass scheme (S-ACOT-$χ$) in deep inelastic scattering and explore the impact of NNLO terms on heavy-quark structure functions $F_{2,L}^{c}(x,Q)$. An amended QCD factorization theorem for DIS is discussed that validates the S-ACOT-$χ$ scheme to all orders in the QCD coupling strength. As a new feature, kinematical constraints on collinear production of heavy quarks that are crucial near the heavy-quark threshold are included in the amended factorization theorem. An algorithmic procedure is outlined for implementing this scheme at NNLO by using mass-dependent and massless results from literature. At two loops in QCD cut diagrams, the S-ACOT-$χ$ scheme reduces scale dependence of heavy-quark DIS cross sections as compared to the fixed-flavor number scheme.

Massive neutral gauge boson production as a probe of nuclear modifications of parton distributions at the LHC

We analyze the role of nuclear modifications of parton distributions, notably, the nuclear shadowing and antishadowing corrections, in production of lepton pairs from decays of neutral electroweak gauge bosons in proton-lead and lead-collisions at the LHC. Using the Collins-Soper-Sterman resummation formalism that we extended to the case of nuclear parton distributions, we observed a direct correlation between the predicted behavior of the transverse momentum and rapidity distributions of the produced vector bosons and the pattern of quark and gluon nuclear modifications. This makes Drell-Yan pair production in $pA$ and $AA$ collisions at the LHC a useful tool for constraining nuclear PDFs in the small-$x$ shadowing and moderate-$x$ antishadowing regions.

Relic Densities of Dark Matter in the U(1)-Extended NMSSM and the Gauged Axion Supermultiplet

We compute the dark matter relic densities of neutralinos and axions in a supersymmetric model with a gauged anomalous U(1) symmetry, kinetically mixed with $U(1)_Y$ of hypercharge. The model is a variant of the USSM (the U(1) extended NMSSM), containing an extra U(1) symmetry and an extra singlet in the superpotential respect to the MSSM, where gauge invariance is restored by Peccei-Quinn interactions using a Stuckelberg multiplet. This approach introduces an axion (Im b) and a saxion (Re b) in the spectrum and generates an axino component for the neutralino. The Stuckelberg axion (Im b) develops a physical component (the gauged axion) after electroweak symmetry breaking. We classify all the interactions of the Lagrangian and perform a complete simulation study of the spectrum, determining the neutralino relic densities using micrOMEGAs. We discuss the phenomenological implications of the model analyzing mass values for the axion from the milli-eV to the MeV region. The possible scenarios that we analyze are significantly constrained by a combination of WMAP data, the exclusion limits from direct axion searches and the veto on late entropy release at the time of nucleosynthesis.

CT10 parton distributions and other developments in the global QCD analysis

We summarize several projects carried out by the CTEQ global analysis of parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton during 2010. We discuss a recently released CT10 family of PDFs with a fixed and variable QCD coupling strength; implementation of combined HERA and Tevatron lepton asymmetry data sets; theoretical issues associated with the analysis of $W$ charge asymmetry in PDF fits; PDFs for leading-order shower programs; and constraints on new color-octet fermions from the hadronic data.

Constraints on color-octet fermions from a global parton distribution analysis

We report a parton distribution function (PDF) analysis of a complete set of hadron scattering data, in which a color-octet fermion (such as a gluino of supersymmetry) is incorporated as an extra parton constituent along with the usual standard model constituents. The data set includes the most up-to-date results from deep-inelastic scattering and from jet production in hadron collisions. Another feature is the inclusion in the fit of data from determinations of the strong coupling alpha_s(Q) at large and small values of the hard scale Q. Our motivation is to determine the extent to which the global PDF analysis may provide constraints on the new fermion, as a function of its mass and alpha_s(M_Z), independent of assumptions such as the mechanism of gluino decays. Based on this analysis, we find that gluino masses as low as 30 to 50 GeV may be compatible with the current hadronic data. Gluino masses below 15 GeV (25 GeV) are excluded if alpha_s(M_Z) varies freely (is equal to 0.118). At the outset, stronger constraints had been anticipated from jet production cross sections, but experimental systematic uncertainties, particularly in normalization, reduce the discriminating power of these data.

Cosmological Properties of a Gauged Axion

We analyze the most salient cosmological features of axions in extensions of the Standard Model with a gauged anomalous extra U(1) symmetry. The model is built by imposing the constraint of gauge invariance in the anomalous effective action, which is extended with Wess-Zumino counterterms. These generate axion-like interactions of the axions to the gauge fields and a gauged shift symmetry. The scalar sector is assumed to acquire a non-perturbative potential after inflation, at the electroweak phase transition, which induces a mixing of the Stuckelberg field of the model with the scalars of the electroweak sector, and at the QCD phase transition. We discuss the possible mechanisms of sequential misalignments which could affect the axions of these models, and generated, in this case, at both transitions. We compute the contribution of these particles to dark matter, quantifying their relic densities as a function of the Stuckelberg mass. We also show that models with a single anomalous U(1) in general do not account for the dark energy, due to the presence of mixed U(1)-SU(3) anomalies.

New parton distributions for collider physics

We extract new parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton by global analysis of hard scattering data in the general-mass framework of perturbative quantum chromodynamics. Our analysis includes new theoretical developments together with the most recent collider data from deep-inelastic scattering, vector boson production, and single-inclusive jet production. Due to the difficulty in fitting both the DO Run-II W lepton asymmetry data and some fixed-target DIS data, we present two families of PDFs, CT10 and CT10W, without and with these high-luminosity W lepton asymmetry data included in the global analysis. With both sets of PDFs, we study theoretical predictions and uncertainties for a diverse selection of processes at the Fermilab Tevatron and the CERN Large Hadron Collider.

Relic Densities of Gauged Axions and Supersymmetry

We illustrate the structure and the main phenomenological features of a supersymmetric model (the USSM-A) built following a bottom-up approach and containing an anomalous abelian gauge symmetry. This model supports a gauged axion in its spectrum and provides a generalization of the global (supersymmetric) Peccei-Quinn construction. Complete simulations of the neutralino relic density are performed. Bounds from CAST and WMAP, combined with dark matter simulations, provide significant constraints on the scale of the interactions between the axion and the gauge fields.

Searching for an Axion-like Particle at the Large Hadron Collider

Axion-like particles are an important part of the spectrum of anomalous gauge theories involving modified mechanisms of cancellation of the gauge anomalies. Among these are intersecting brane models, which are characterized by the presence of one physical axion. We overview a recent study of their supersymmetric construction and some LHC studies of the productions rates for a gauged axion.

An Anomalous Extra Z Prime from Intersecting Branes with Drell-Yan and Direct Photons at the LHC

We quantify the impact of gauge anomalies at the Large Hadron Collider by studying the invariant mass distributions in Drell-Yan and in double prompt photon, using an extension of the Standard Model characterized by an additional anomalous U(1) derived from intersecting branes. The approach is rather general and applies to any anomalous abelian gauge current. Anomalies are cancelled using either the Wess-Zumino mechanism with suitable Peccei-Quinn-like interactions and a Stueckelberg axion, or by the Green-Schwarz mechanism. We compare predictions for the corresponding extra Z-prime to anomaly-free realizations such as those involving U(1)_{B-L}. We identify the leading anomalous corrections to both channels, which contribute at higher orders, and compare them against the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD background. Anomalous effects in these inclusive observables are found to be very small, far below the percent level and below the size of the typical QCD corrections quantified by NNLO K-factors.

Precision Studies of the NNLO DGLAP Evolution at the LHC with CANDIA

We summarize the theoretical approach to the solution of the NNLO DGLAP equations using methods based on the logarithmic expansions in x-space and their implementation into the C program Candia 1.0. We present the various options implemented in the program and discuss the different solutions. The user can choose the order of the evolution, the type of the solution, which can be either exact or truncated, and the evolution either with a fixed or a varying flavor number, implemented in the varying-flavour-number scheme (VFNS). The renormalization and factorization scale dependences are treated separately. In the non-singlet sector the program implements an exact NNLO solution.

Z-prime Searches at the LHC: Some QCD Precision Studies in Drell-Yan

Discovery potentials for extra neutral interactions at the Large Hadron Collider in forthcoming experiments are analyzed in Drell-Yan. For this purpose we use high precision next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) determination of the mass invarian distributions and of the total cross sections in the kinematic region around 1 TeV. In this region we explore the possibility to make a preliminary distinction between different anomaly-free extentions of the Standard Model.

NNLO Logarithmic Expansions and Precise Determinations of the Neutral Currents near the Z Resonance at the LHC: The Drell-Yan case

We present a comparative study of the invariant mass and rapidity distributions in Drell-Yan lepton pair production, with particular emphasis on the role played by the QCD evolution. We focus our study around the Z resonance ($50 <Q < 200$ GeV) and perform a general analysis of the factorization/renormalization scale dependence of the cross sections, with the two scales included both in the evolution and in the hard scatterings. We also present the variations of the cross sections due to the errors on the parton distributions (pdf's) and an analysis of the corresponding $K$-factors. Predictions from several sets of pdf's, evolved by MRST and Alekhin are compared with those generated using \textsc{Candia}, a NNLO evolution program that implements the theory of the logarithmic expansions, developed in a previous work. These expansions allow to select truncated solutions of varying accuracy using the method of the $x$-space iterates. The evolved parton distributions are in good agreement with other approaches. The study can be generalized for high precision searches of extra neutral gauge interactions at the LHC.

NNLO Logarithmic Expansions and Exact Solutions of the DGLAP Equations from x-Space: New Algorithms for Precision Studies at the LHC

A NNLO analysis of certain logarithmic expansions, developed for precision studies of the evolution of the QCD parton distributions (pdf) at the Large Hadron Collider, is presented. We elaborate on their relations to all the solutions of the DGLAP equations that have been hitherto obtained from Mellin space, to which are equivalent. Exact expansions, equivalent to exact solutions of the equations, are constructed in the non-singlet sector. The algorithmic features of our approach are also emphasized, since this method allows to obtain numerical solutions of the evolution equations with the same accuracy of other methods, based on Mellin space, and of brute force methods, which solve the equations by finite differences. The implementation of our analysis allows to compare with existing benchmarks for the evolution of the pdf's, useful for applications at the LHC, and to extend them significantly in a systematic fashion, especially when solutions that retain logarithmic corrections only of a certain accuracy are searched for.

On the Scale Variation of the Total Cross Section for Higgs Production at the LHC and at the Tevatron

We present a detailed study of the total $p p$ cross section for scalar Higgs production to next-to-next-to leading order in $α_s$ at LHC energies, and of the $p\bar p$ cross section at the Tevatron, combining an implementation of the solutions of the parton evolution equations at the 3-loop order with the corresponding hard scatterings, evaluated at the same perturbative order. Our solutions of the DGLAP equations are implemented directly in $x$-space and allow the study of the dependence of the results on the factorization ($μ_F$) and renormalization scales $(μ_R)$ typical of a given process, together with the stability of the perturbative expansion. The input sets for the parton evolutions are those given by Martin, Roberts, Stirling and Thorne and by Alekhin. Results for K-factors are also presented. The NNLO corrections can be quite sizeable at typical collider energies. The stability region of the perturbative expansion is found when $μ_R > m_H\simμ_F$.

An x-Space Analysis of Evolution Equations: Soffer's Inequality and the Non-forward Evolution

We analize the use of algorithms based in x-space for the solution of renormalization group equations of DGLAP-type and test their consistency by studying bounds among partons distributions - in our specific case Soffer's inequality and the perturbative behaviour of the nucleon tensor charge - to next-to-leading order in QCD . A discussion of the perturbative resummation implicit in these expansions using Mellin moments is included. We also comment on the (kinetic) proof of positivity of the evolution of $h_1$, using a kinetic analogy and illustrate the extension of the algorithm to the evolution of generalized parton distributions. We prove positivity of the non-forward evolution in a special case and illustrate a Fokker-Planck approximation to it.
