An $SU(15)$ Approach to Bifermion Classification

One interesting way to extend the standard model is the hypothesis of bifermions which are bosons which couple to pairs of quarks and leptons. We point out that $SU(15)$ grand unification gives a natural way to classify bifermions and discuss leptoquarks, biquarks and bileptons. In fact, $SU(15)$ provides an ideal covering group as it contains all possible bifermions within a single model.

Non-Leptonic Decays of Bileptons

We provide a detailed analysis of the decays of doubly-charged bilepton gauge bosons $Y^{\pm\pm}$, as predicted in models based on a $SU(3)_C\times SU(3)_L\times U(1)_X$ symmetry. In addition to the decay modes into same-sign lepton pairs, which were already investigated in scenarios wherein each branching ratio was about one third, there are, depending on the mass spectrum, possible non-leptonic decays which reduce the leptonic rates. These non-leptonic decays are typically into a light quark (antiquark) and a heavy TeV-scale antiquark (quark), which carries double lepton number and decays via virtual bileptons. We choose two benchmark points to represent the particle spectrum and present a phenomenological analysis of such decays. We find that, while the LHC statistics are too low, even in the high-luminosity phase, they can lead to a visible signal at a future 100 TeV hadron collider (FCC-$hh$). A more exhaustive exploration with a rigorous inclusion of tagging efficiencies, detector simulations and higher-order corrections to the partonic cross section, aiming at assessing the reach of LHC and FCC-$hh$ for bileptons as a function of the model parameters, as well as a recast of four-top searches in terms of the bilepton model, are deferred to future work.

Bounds on the Conformal Scale of a Minimally Coupled Dilaton and Multi-Leptonic Signatures at the LHC

We explore the potential for the discovery of a dilaton $\mathcal{O}(200-500)$ GeV in a classical scale/conformal invariant extension of the Standard Model by investigating the size of the corresponding breaking scale $Λ$ at the LHC, extending a previous analysis. In particular, we address the recent bounds on $Λ$ derived from Higgs boson searches. We investigate if such a dilaton can be produced via gluon-gluon fusion, presenting rates for its decay either into a pair of Higgs bosons or into two heavy gauge bosons, which can give rise to multi-leptonic final states. A detailed analysis via PYTHIA-FastJet has been carried out of the dominant Standard Model backgrounds, at a centre of mass energy of 14 TeV. We show that early data of $\sim 20$ fb$^{-1}$ can certainly probe the region of parameter space where such a dilaton is allowed. A conformal scale of 5 TeV is allowed by the current data, for almost all values of the dilaton mass investigated.

Constraints on Abelian Extensions of the Standard Model from Two-Loop Vacuum Stability and $U(1)_{B-L}$

We present a renormalization group study of the scalar potential in a minimal $U(1)_{B-L}$ extension of the Standard Model involving one extra heavier Higgs and three heavy right-handed neutrinos with family universal B-L charge assignments. We implement a type-I seesaw for the masses of the light neutrinos of the Standard Model. In particular, compared to a previous study, we perform a two-loop extension of the evolution, showing that two-loop effects are essential for the study of the stability of the scalar potential up to the Planck scale. The analysis includes the contribution of the kinetic mixing between the two abelian gauge groups, which is radiatively generated by the evolution, and the one-loop matching conditions at the electroweak scale. By requiring the stability of the potential up to the Planck mass, significant constraints on the masses of the heavy neutrinos, on the gauge couplings and the mixing in the Higgs sector are identified.

General Analysis of the Charged Higgs Sector of the $Y=0$ Triplet-Singlet Extension of the MSSM at the LHC

We investigate the extended Higgs sectors, specially the charged Higgs sector in a supersymmetric $Y=0$ $SU(2)$ triplet and a Standard Model (SM) gauge singlet extension of SM. We show that in this model the allowed data for the Higgs boson interaction eigenstates tend to group into separate blocks for $SU(2)$ triplet, doublet and singlet. The triplet sector has two degenerate paired states, each pair composed of a mostly-triplet charged Higgs and of a mostly-triplet scalar or pseudoscalar state. The mostly-doublet sector involves a Standard Model like Higgs of 125 GeV and extra mass-degenerate states, composed of a charged, a scalar and a pseudoscalar. The CP-odd component of the singlet scalar, after supersymmetry breaking, takes the role of a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone mode in the $Z_3$ symmetric case, while the CP-even one becomes decoupled. In a second part of our study we investigate the different decay processes allowed to a charged Higgs boson of this model. Specifically, we search for general signatures of the TNMSSM in order to distinguish among Higgs fields belonging to $SU(2)$ doublet, triplet and singlet representations at the LHC. We also propose few golden plated final state modes carrying the distinctive signatures of this model which could be investigated in collider searches. We also show how in the decoupling limit of the triplet ($|λ_T| \simeq 0$) affects the decays as well as the production channels at the LHC.

Higgs bosons: discovered and hidden, in extended Supersymmetric Standard Models at the LHC

We investigate an extension of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) containing a $SU(2)$ Higgs triplet of zero hypercharge and a gauge singlet. We focus on a scenario of this model which allows a light pseudoscalar and/or a scalar below $100$ GeV in the spectrum, consistent with the most recent data from the LHC and the earlier data from the LEP experiments. We analyze the exotic decay of the discovered Higgs $(h_{125})$ into two light (hidden) Higgs bosons present in the extension. The latter are allowed by the uncertainties in the Higgs decay $h_{125}\to WW^*$, $h_{125}\to ZZ^*$ and $h_{125}\to γγ$. We have searched for such light Higgs bosons in the $2b+2τ$, $\geq 3τ$, $2b+2μ$ and $2τ+2μ$ final states at the LHC with 13 and 14 TeV. A region of such parameter space can be explored with an integrated luminosity of 25 fb$^{-1}$ at the LHC.

Phenomenology of minimal Z' models: from the LHC to the GUT scale

We consider a class of minimal abelian extensions of the Standard Model with an extra neutral gauge boson $Z'$ at the TeV scale. In these scenarios an extended scalar sector and heavy right-handed neutrinos are naturally envisaged. We present some of their striking signatures at the Large Hadron Collider, the most interesting arising from a $Z'$ decaying to heavy neutrino pairs as well as a heavy scalar decaying to two Standard Model Higgses. Using renormalisation group methods, we characterise the high energy behaviours of these extensions and exploit the constraints imposed by the embedding into a wider GUT scenario.

Search for $Z'$, vacuum (in)stability and hints of high-energy structures

We study the high-energy behaviour of a class of anomaly-free abelian extensions of the Standard Model. We focus on the interplay among the phenomenological characterisation of the model and the use of precise renormalisation group methods. Using as boundary conditions regions of the parameter space at the verge of current LHC probe, interesting unification patterns emerge linked to thresholds belonging to a SO(10) grand unification theory (GUT). We stress how the evolution of the mixing between the two abelian factors may provide a valuable tool to address the candidate high-energy embedding. The emerging unification scenarios are then challenged to be perturbative and to allow for a stable vacuum.

Neutrino and Photon Lensing by Black Holes: Radiative Lens Equations and Post-Newtonian Contributions

We extend a previous phenomenological analysis of photon lensing in an external gravitational background to the case of a massless neutrino, and propose a method to incorporate radiative effects in the classical lens equations of neutrinos and photons. The study is performed for a Schwarzschild metric, generated by a point-like source, and expanded in the Newtonian potential at first order. We use a semiclassical approach, where the perturbative corrections to neutrino scattering, evaluated at one-loop in the Standard Model, are compared with the Einstein formula for the deflection using an impact parameter formulation. For this purpose, we use the renormalized expression of the graviton/fermion/fermion vertex presented in previous studies. We show the agreement between the classical and the semiclassical formulations, for values of the impact parameter $b_h$ of the neutrinos of the order of $b_h\sim 20$, measured in units of the Schwarzschild radius. The analysis is then extended with the inclusion of the post Newtonian corrections in the external gravity field, showing that this extension finds application in the case of the scattering of a neutrino/photon off a primordial black hole. The energy dependence of the deflection, generated by the quantum corrections, is then combined with the standard formulation of the classical lens equations. We illustrate our approach by detailed numerical studies, using as a reference both the thin lens and the nonlinear Virbhadra-Ellis lens.

Perspectives on a Supersymmetric Extension of the Standard Model with a $Y=0$ Higgs Triplet and a Singlet at the LHC

We investigate a supersymmetric extension of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), called the TNMSSM, containing a $SU(2)$ Higgs triplet $(\hat{T})$ of $Y=0$ hypercharge and a singlet superfields $(\hat{S})$ in the corresponding superpotential. The model can be viewed, equivalently, as an extension of the NMSSM with the addition of a $\hat{T}-\hat{S}$ interaction and of an extra coupling of the triplet to the two Higgs doublets of the NMSSM. In this scenario the Higgs particle spectrum at tree-level gets additional mass contributions from the triplet and singlet scalar components respect to the MSSM, which are particularly enhanced at low $\tanβ$. We calculate the one-loop Higgs masses for the neutral physical Higgs bosons by a Coleman-Weinberg effective potential approach. In particular, we investigate separately the impact of the radiative corrections due to the electroweak, gauge-gaugino-higgsino, fermion-sfermion and Higgs self-interactions to the Higgs masses. Due to the larger number of scalars and of triplet and singlet couplings, the Higgs corrections can be larger than the strong corrections. This reduces the amount of fine-tuning required to fit the recent Higgs data. Using the expressions of the beta-functions of the model, we show that the large triplet singlet coupling remains perturbative up to $\sim10^{8-10}$ GeV. The model is also characterized by a light pseudoscalar in the spectrum, which is a linear combination of the triplet, doublet and singlet CP-odd components. We discuss the production and decay signatures of the Higgs bosons in this model, including scenarios with hidden Higgses, which could be investigated at the LHC in the current run.

Probing the Hidden Higgs Bosons of the $Y=0$ Triplet- and Singlet-Extended Supersymmetric Standard Model at the LHC

We investigate the scalar sector in an extension of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) containing a $SU(2)$ Higgs triplet of zero hypercharge and a gauge singlet beside the $SU(2)$ scalar doublets. In particular, we focus on a scenario of this model which allows a light pseudoscalar and/or a scalar below $100$ GeV, consistent with the most recent data from the LHC and the earlier data from the LEP experiments. The study of the parameter space for such additional scalars/pseudoscalars decay of the Higgs is performed in the gluon fusion channel. The extra hidden Higgs bosons of the enlarged scalar sector, if they exist, will then decay into lighter fermion paris, i.e., $b\bar{b}$, $τ\barτ$ and $μ\barμ$ via the mixing with the doublets. A detailed simulation using PYTHIA of the $2b+2τ$, $\geq 3τ$, $2b+2μ$ and $2τ+2μ$ final states is presented. From our analysis we conclude that, depending on the selected benchmark points, such decay modes can be explored with an integrated luminosity of 25 fb$^{-1}$ at the LHC at a center of mass energy of 13 TeV.

Stability constraints of the scalar potential in extensions of the Standard Model with TeV scale right handed neutrinos

We investigate the stability of the scalar potential in a minimal $U(1)'$ extension of the Standard Model augmented by an extra complex scalar and three right handed neutrinos. We consider a type-I seesaw scenario for the generation of the small neutrino masses. Moreover, we focus our analysis on a class of models potentially accessible at the LHC experiment, in which the vacuum expectation value of the extra scalar is chosen in the TeV range. We show that the requirements of stability of the potential within the perturbative evolution under the renormalization group impose significant constraints on the Yukawa couplings of the right handed neutrinos.

Superconformal Sum Rules and the Spectral Density Flow of the Composite Dilaton (ADD) Multiplet in $\mathcal{N}=1$ Theories

We discuss the signature of the anomalous breaking of the superconformal symmetry in $\mathcal{N}=1$ super Yang Mills theory, mediated by the Ferrara-Zumino hypercurrent ($\mathcal{J}$) with two vector ($\mathcal V$) supercurrents $(\mathcal{JVV})$ and its manifestation in the anomaly action, in the form of anomaly poles. This allows to investigate in a unified way both conformal and chiral anomalies. The analysis is performed in parallel to the Standard Model, for comparison. We investigate, in particular, massive deformations of the $\mathcal{N}=1$ theory and the spectral densities of the anomaly form factors which are extracted from the components of this correlator. In this extended framework it is shown that all the anomaly form factors are characterized by spectral densities which flow with the mass deformation. In particular, the continuum contributions from the two-particle cuts of the intermediate states turn into into poles in the zero mass limit, with a single sum rule satisfied by each component. Non anomalous form factors, instead, in the same anomalous correlators, are characterized by non-integrable spectral densities. These tend to uniform distributions as one moves towards the conformal point, with a clear dual behaviour. As in a previous analysis of the dilaton pole of the Standard Model, also in this case the poles can be interpreted as signaling the exchange of a composite dilaton/axion/dilatino (ADD) multiplet in the effective Lagrangian.[...]

Vacuum Stability in U(1)-Prime Extensions of the Standard Model with TeV Scale Right Handed Neutrinos

We investigate a minimal $U(1)'$ extension of the Standard Model with one extra complex scalar and generic gauge charge assignments. We use a type-I seesaw mechanism with three heavy right handed neutrinos to illustrate the constraints on the charges, on their mass and on the mixing angle of the two scalars, derived by requiring the vacuum stability of the scalar potential. We focus our study on a scenario which could be accessible at the LHC, by selecting a vacuum expectation value of the extra Higgs in the TeV range and determining the constraints that emerge in the parameter space. To illustrate the generality of the approach, specific gauge choices corresponding to $U(1)_{B-L}, U(1)_R$ and $U(1)_χ$ are separately analyzed. Our results are based on a modified expression of one of the $β$ functions of the quartic couplings of the scalar potential compared to the previous literature. This is due to a change in the coefficient of the Yukawa term of the right handed neutrinos. Differently from previous analysis, we show that this coupling may destabilize the vacuum.

Conformal Trace Relations from the Dilaton Wess-Zumino Action

We use the method of Weyl-gauging in the determination of the Wess-Zumino conformal anomaly action, to show that in any even ($d = 2 k$) dimensions all the hierarchy of correlation functions involving traces of the energy-momentum tensor is determined in terms of those of lower orders, up to $2 k$. We work out explicitly the case $d=4$, and show that in this case in any conformal field theory only the first 4 traced correlators are independent. All the remaining correlators are recursively generated by the first 4. The result is a consequence of the cocycle condition which defines the Wess-Zumino action and of the finite order of its dilaton interactions.

Dilaton Interactions and the Anomalous Breaking of Scale Invariance of the Standard Model

We discuss the main features of dilaton interactions for fundamental and effective dilaton fields. In particular, we elaborate on the various ways in which dilatons can couple to the Standard Model and on the role played by the conformal anomaly as a way to characterize their interactions. In the case of a dilaton derived from a metric compactification (graviscalar), we present the structure of the radiative corrections to its decay into two photons, a photon and a $Z$, two $Z$ gauge bosons and two gluons, together with their renormalization properties. We prove that, in the electroweak sector, the renormalization of the theory is guaranteed only if the Higgs is conformally coupled. For such a dilaton, its coupling to the trace anomaly is quite general, and determines, for instance, an enhancement of its decay rates into two photons and two gluons. We then turn our attention to theories containing a non-gravitational (effective) dilaton, which, in our perturbative analysis, manifests as a pseudo-Nambu Goldstone mode of the dilatation current ($J_D$). The infrared coupling of such a state to the two-photons and to the two-gluons sector, and the corresponding anomaly enhancements of its decay rates in these channels, is critically analyzed.

Fermion Scattering in a Gravitational Background: Electroweak Corrections and Flavour Transitions

We investigate the role of the electroweak corrections to the scattering cross section of Standard Model fermions with gravity. We use both an approach of scattering off an external potential, where the gravitational field is treated as a classical background generated by a heavy source, and the usual interaction based on the one-graviton-exchange. In the potential appoach we consider the fields both of a localized and of a distributed gravitational source of spherical symmetry and uniform density, separating the cases of interactions taking place both in the inner and external regions of the source. This allows to make a distinction between interactions involving neutrinos and dark matter particles with a realistic gravity source, which cover the inner region, and the rest of the Standard model fermions. The role of the gravitationally induced flavour-changing transitions, as well as the flavour diagonal ones, are investigated in the limit of both large and small momentum transfers, deriving the structure of the corresponding Hamiltonian.

Mass Corrections to Flavor-Changing Fermion-Graviton Vertices in the Standard Model

In a previous study, the flavor-changing fermion-graviton interactions have been analyzed in the framework of the standard model, where analytical results for the relevant form factors were obtained at the leading order in the external fermion masses. These interactions arise at one-loop level by the charged electroweak corrections to the fermion-graviton vertex, when the off-diagonal flavor transitions in the corresponding charged weak currents are taken into account. Due to the conservation of the energy-momentum tensor, the corresponding form factors turn out to be finite and gauge invariant when external fermions are on-shell. Here we extend this previous analysis by including the exact dependence on the external fermion masses. Complete analytical results are provided for all the relevant form factors to the flavor-changing fermion-graviton transitions.

One loop Standard Model corrections to flavor diagonal fermion-graviton vertices

We extend a previous analysis of flavor-changing fermion-graviton vertices, by adding the one-loop SM corrections to the flavor diagonal fermion-graviton interactions. Explicit analytical expressions taking into account fermion masses for the on-shell form factors are computed and presented. The infrared safety of the fermion-graviton vertices against radiative corrections of soft photons and gluons is proved, by extending the ordinary infrared cancellation mechanism between real and virtual emissions to the gravity case. These results can be easily generalized to fermion couplings with massive gravitons, graviscalar, and dilaton fields, with potential phenomenological implications to new physics scenarios with low gravity scale.

Solving the Conformal Constraints for Scalar Operators in Momentum Space and the Evaluation of Feynman's Master Integrals

We investigate the structure of the constraints on three-point correlation functions emerging when conformal invariance is imposed in momentum space and in arbitrary space-time dimensions, presenting a derivation of their solutions for arbitrary scalar operators. We show that the differential equations generated by the requirement of symmetry under special conformal transformations coincide with those satisfied by generalized hypergeometric functions (Appell's functions). Combined with the position space expression of this correlator, whose Fourier transform is given by a family of generalized Feynman (master) integrals, the method allows to derive the expression of such integrals in a completely independent way, bypassing the use of Mellin-Barnes techniques, which have been used in the past. The application of the special conformal constraints generates a new recursion relation for this family of integrals.

The Dilaton Wess-Zumino Action in 6 Dimensions from Weyl Gauging: Local Anomalies and Trace Relations

We extend a previous analysis on the derivation of the dilaton Wess-Zumino (WZ) action in $d=4$, based on the method of Weyl gauging, to $6$ dimensions. As in the previous case, we discuss the structure of the same action in dimensional regularization using 6-dimensional Weyl invariants, extracting the dilaton interactions in the most general scheme, with the inclusion of the local anomaly terms. As an application, we present the WZ action for the (2,0) tensor multiplet, which has been investigated in the past in the context of the $AdS_7/CFT_6$ holographic anomaly matching. We then extend to $d=6$ the investigation of fully traced correlation functions of EMT's, formerly presented in $d=4$, showing that their hierarchy is functionally related only to the first 6 correlators. We give the explicit expressions of these in the most general scheme, up to rank-4.

Graviton Vertices and the Mapping of Anomalous Correlators to Momentum Space for a General Conformal Field Theory

We investigate the mapping of conformal correlators and of their anomalies from configuration to momentum space for general dimensions, focusing on the anomalous correlators $TOO$, $TVV$ - involving the energy-momentum tensor $(T)$ with a vector $(V)$ or a scalar operator ($O$) - and the 3-graviton vertex $TTT$. We compute the $TOO$, $TVV$ and $TTT$ one-loop vertex functions in dimensional regularization for free field theories involving conformal scalar, fermion and vector fields. Since there are only one or two independent tensor structures solving all the conformal Ward identities for the $TOO$ or $TVV$ vertex functions respectively, and three independent tensor structures for the $TTT$ vertex, and the coefficients of these tensors are known for free fields, it is possible to identify the corresponding tensors in momentum space from the computation of the correlators for free fields. This works in general $d$ dimensions for $TOO$ and $TVV$ correlators, but only in 4 dimensions for $TTT$, since vector fields are conformal only in $d=4$. In this way the general solution of the Ward identities including anomalous ones for these correlators in (Euclidean) position space, found by Osborn and Petkou is mapped to the ordinary diagrammatic one in momentum space. We give simplified expressions of all these correlators in configuration space which are explicitly Fourier integrable and provide a diagrammatic interpretation of all the contact terms arising when two or more of the points coincide. We discuss how the anomalies arise in each approach [...]

Higher Order Dilaton Interactions in the Nearly Conformal Limit of the Standard Model

We investigate the Standard Model in the nearly conformal limit, in which conformal symmetry is broken only by the dilatation anomaly, through a hierarchy of anomalous Ward identities for the divergence of its dilatation current. In this approximation, the identities allow to extract the coupling of the dilaton to the trace anomaly, which we compute up to the quartic order in the conformal breaking scale. Our approach can be easily extended to discuss the anomaly contributions to the dilaton effective action to an arbitrarily high order. They allow to make a distinction between the Higgs and a dilaton at a phenomenological level.

Relic Densities of Dark Matter in the U(1)-Extended NMSSM and the Gauged Axion Supermultiplet

We compute the dark matter relic densities of neutralinos and axions in a supersymmetric model with a gauged anomalous U(1) symmetry, kinetically mixed with $U(1)_Y$ of hypercharge. The model is a variant of the USSM (the U(1) extended NMSSM), containing an extra U(1) symmetry and an extra singlet in the superpotential respect to the MSSM, where gauge invariance is restored by Peccei-Quinn interactions using a Stuckelberg multiplet. This approach introduces an axion (Im b) and a saxion (Re b) in the spectrum and generates an axino component for the neutralino. The Stuckelberg axion (Im b) develops a physical component (the gauged axion) after electroweak symmetry breaking. We classify all the interactions of the Lagrangian and perform a complete simulation study of the spectrum, determining the neutralino relic densities using micrOMEGAs. We discuss the phenomenological implications of the model analyzing mass values for the axion from the milli-eV to the MeV region. The possible scenarios that we analyze are significantly constrained by a combination of WMAP data, the exclusion limits from direct axion searches and the veto on late entropy release at the time of nucleosynthesis.

Three and Four Point Functions of Stress Energy Tensors in D=3 for the Analysis of Cosmological Non-Gaussianities

We compute the correlation functions of 3 and 4 stress energy tensors $(T)$ in D=3 in free field theories of scalars, abelian gauge fields, and fermions, which are relevant in the analysis of cosmological non-gaussianities. These correlators appear in the holographic expressions of the scalar and tensor perturbations derived for holographic cosmological models. The result is simply adapted to describe the leading contributions in the gauge coupling to the same correlators also for a non abelian SU(N) gauge theory. In the case of the bispectrum, our results are mapped and shown to be in full agreement with the corresponding expressions given in a recent holographic study by Bzowski, McFadden and Skenderis. In the 4-T case we present the completely traced amplitude plus all the contact terms. These are expected to appear in a fourth order extension of the holographic formulas for the 4-point functions of scalar metric perturbations.

Comments on Anomaly Cancellations by Pole Subtractions and Ghost Instabilities with Gravity

We investigate some aspects of anomaly cancellation realized by the subtraction of an anomaly pole, stressing on some of its properties in superspace. In a local formulation these subtractions can be described in terms of a physical scalar, an axion and related ghosts. They appear to be necessary for the unitarization of the theory in the ultraviolet, but they may generate an infrared instability of the corresponding effective action, signalled by ghost condensation. In particular the subtraction of the superanomaly multiplet by a pole in superspace is of dubious significance, due to the different nature of the chiral and conformal anomalies. In turn, this may set more stringent constraints on the coupling of supersymmetric theories to gravity.

Gravity and the Neutral Currents: Effective Interactions from the Trace Anomaly

We present a complete study of the one graviton-two neutral gauge bosons vertex at 1-loop level in the electroweak theory. This vertex provides the leading contribution to the interaction between the Standard Model and gravity, mediated by the trace anomaly, at first order in the inverse Planck mass and at second order in the electroweak expansion. At the same time, these corrections are significant for precision studies of models with low scale gravity at the LHC. We show, in analogy with previous results in the QED and QCD cases, that the anomalous interaction between gravity and the gauge current of the Standard Model, due to the trace anomaly, is mediated, in each gauge invariant sector, by effective massless scalar degrees of freedom. We derive the Ward and Slavnov-Taylor identities characterizing the vertex. Our analysis includes the contributions from the improvements of the scalar sector, induced by a conformally coupled Higgs sector in curved space.

preprint2011arXiv

The Conformal Anomaly and the Neutral Currents Sector of the Standard Model

We elaborate on the structure of the graviton-gauge-gauge vertex in the electroweak theory, obtained by the insertion of the complete energy-momentum tensor ($T$) on 2-point functions of neutral gauge currents ($VV'$). The vertex defines the leading contribution to the effective action which accounts for the conformal anomaly and related interaction between the Standard Model and gravity. The energy momentum tensor is derived from the curved spacetime Lagrangian in the linearized gravitational limit, and with the inclusion of the term of improvement of a conformally coupled Higgs sector. As in the previous cases of QED and QCD, we find that the conformal anomaly induces an effective massless scalar interaction between gravity and the neutral currents in each gauge invariant component of the vertex. This is described by the exchange of an anomaly pole. We show that for a spontaneously broken theory the anomaly can be entirely attributed to the poles only for a conformally coupled Higgs scalar. In the exchange of a graviton, the trace part of the corresponding interaction can be interpreted as due to an effective dilaton, using a local version of the effective action. We discuss the implications of the anomalous Ward identity for the $TVV'$ correlator for the structure of the gauge/gauge/ effective dilaton vertex in the effective action. The analogy between these effective interactions and those related to the radion in theories with large extra dimensions is pointed out.

Cosmological Properties of a Gauged Axion

We analyze the most salient cosmological features of axions in extensions of the Standard Model with a gauged anomalous extra U(1) symmetry. The model is built by imposing the constraint of gauge invariance in the anomalous effective action, which is extended with Wess-Zumino counterterms. These generate axion-like interactions of the axions to the gauge fields and a gauged shift symmetry. The scalar sector is assumed to acquire a non-perturbative potential after inflation, at the electroweak phase transition, which induces a mixing of the Stuckelberg field of the model with the scalars of the electroweak sector, and at the QCD phase transition. We discuss the possible mechanisms of sequential misalignments which could affect the axions of these models, and generated, in this case, at both transitions. We compute the contribution of these particles to dark matter, quantifying their relic densities as a function of the Stuckelberg mass. We also show that models with a single anomalous U(1) in general do not account for the dark energy, due to the presence of mixed U(1)-SU(3) anomalies.

Relic Densities of Gauged Axions and Supersymmetry

We illustrate the structure and the main phenomenological features of a supersymmetric model (the USSM-A) built following a bottom-up approach and containing an anomalous abelian gauge symmetry. This model supports a gauged axion in its spectrum and provides a generalization of the global (supersymmetric) Peccei-Quinn construction. Complete simulations of the neutralino relic density are performed. Bounds from CAST and WMAP, combined with dark matter simulations, provide significant constraints on the scale of the interactions between the axion and the gauge fields.

The Trace Anomaly and the Gravitational Coupling of an Anomalous U(1)

We extend a previous computation of the TJJ correlator, involving the energy-momentum tensor of an abelian gauge theory and two vector currents, to the case of mixed axial-vector/vector currents. The study is performed in analogy to the case of the $AVV$ vertex for the chiral anomaly. We derive the general structure of the anomalous Ward identities and provide explicit tests of their consistency using Dimensional Reduction. Mixed massive correlators of the form $TJ_V J_A$ are shown to vanish both by Ward identities and by C-invariance. The result is characterized by the appearance of massless scalar degrees of freedom in the coupling of chiral and vector theories to gravity, affecting both the soft and the ultraviolet region of the vertex. This is in agreement with previous studies of the effective action of gauge and conformal anomalies in QED and QCD.

Trace Anomaly, Massless Scalars and the Gravitational Coupling of QCD

The anomalous effective action describing the coupling of gravity to a non-abelian gauge theory can be determined by a variational solution of the anomaly equation, as shown by Riegert long ago. It is given by a nonlocal expression, with the nonlocal interaction determined by the Green's function of a conformally covariant operator of fourth order. In recent works it has been shown that this interaction is mediated by a simple pole in an expansion around a Minkowski background, coupled in the infrared in the massless fermion limit. This result relies on the local formulation of the original action in terms of two auxiliary fields, one physical scalar and one ghost, which take the role of massless composite degrees of freedom. In the gravity case, the two scalars have provided ground in favour of some recent proposals of an infrared approach to the solution of the dark energy problem, entirely based on the behaviour of the vacuum energy at the QCD phase transition. As a test of this general result, we perform a complete one-loop computation of the effective action describing the coupling of a non-abelian gauge theory to gravity. We confirm the appearance of an anomaly pole which contributes to the trace part of the $TJJ$ correlator and of extra poles in its trace-free part, in the quark and gluon sectors, describing the coupling of the energy momentum tensor ($T$) to two non abelian gauge currents ($J$).

Searching for an Axion-like Particle at the Large Hadron Collider

Axion-like particles are an important part of the spectrum of anomalous gauge theories involving modified mechanisms of cancellation of the gauge anomalies. Among these are intersecting brane models, which are characterized by the presence of one physical axion. We overview a recent study of their supersymmetric construction and some LHC studies of the productions rates for a gauged axion.

Trilinear Gauge Interactions in Extensions of the Standard Model and Unitarity

We summarize recent work on the characterization of anomaly poles in connection with the field-theory interpretation of the Green-Schwarz mechanism of anomaly cancellation and on their effective field theories, stressing on the properties of the anomaly vertex in two representations, the Rosenberg and the Longitudinal/Transverse. The presence of polar amplitudes in these theories causes a violation of unitarity at high energy which is cured by the exchange of the axion. We comment on the possible physical implications of this mechanism.

Precision Studies of the NNLO DGLAP Evolution at the LHC with CANDIA

We summarize the theoretical approach to the solution of the NNLO DGLAP equations using methods based on the logarithmic expansions in x-space and their implementation into the C program Candia 1.0. We present the various options implemented in the program and discuss the different solutions. The user can choose the order of the evolution, the type of the solution, which can be either exact or truncated, and the evolution either with a fixed or a varying flavor number, implemented in the varying-flavour-number scheme (VFNS). The renormalization and factorization scale dependences are treated separately. In the non-singlet sector the program implements an exact NNLO solution.

Z-prime Searches at the LHC: Some QCD Precision Studies in Drell-Yan

Discovery potentials for extra neutral interactions at the Large Hadron Collider in forthcoming experiments are analyzed in Drell-Yan. For this purpose we use high precision next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) determination of the mass invarian distributions and of the total cross sections in the kinematic region around 1 TeV. In this region we explore the possibility to make a preliminary distinction between different anomaly-free extentions of the Standard Model.

NNLO Logarithmic Expansions and Precise Determinations of the Neutral Currents near the Z Resonance at the LHC: The Drell-Yan case

We present a comparative study of the invariant mass and rapidity distributions in Drell-Yan lepton pair production, with particular emphasis on the role played by the QCD evolution. We focus our study around the Z resonance ($50 <Q < 200$ GeV) and perform a general analysis of the factorization/renormalization scale dependence of the cross sections, with the two scales included both in the evolution and in the hard scatterings. We also present the variations of the cross sections due to the errors on the parton distributions (pdf's) and an analysis of the corresponding $K$-factors. Predictions from several sets of pdf's, evolved by MRST and Alekhin are compared with those generated using \textsc{Candia}, a NNLO evolution program that implements the theory of the logarithmic expansions, developed in a previous work. These expansions allow to select truncated solutions of varying accuracy using the method of the $x$-space iterates. The evolved parton distributions are in good agreement with other approaches. The study can be generalized for high precision searches of extra neutral gauge interactions at the LHC.

String Inspired Neutrino Mass Textures in Light of KamLAND and WMAP

Recent data from astrophysical and terrestrial experiments indicates large mixing angles in the neutral lepton sector and restricts the allowed regions of neutrino masses. In particular, the large mixing angles in the lepton sector are disparate from the small mixing in the quark sector. This disparity is unnatural from the point of view of grand unified theories, that are well motivated by the Standard Model multiplet structure and logarithmic running of its parameters. we examine the issue of this disparity from the perspective of string derived SO(10) GUT models, in which the SO(10) symmetry is broken directly at the string theory level. A characteristic feature of such models is the appearance of numerous SO(10) singlet fields. We propose that the mismatch between the quark and lepton mixing parameters arises due to this extended singlet spectrum and its mixing with the right-handed neutrinos. We discuss a string inspired effective parameterization of the extended neutrino mass matrix and demonstrates that the coupling with the SO(10) singlet spectrum can readily account for the neutrino flavor parameters. The mechanism implies that some SO(10) singlet fields should exist at intermediate mass scales. We study the possibilty of deriving the neutrino mass spectrum from string theory in a specific string derived vacuum solution, and comment on the properties that such a solution should possess.

Supersymmetric Scaling Violations (I). Solving the Supersymmetric DGLAP Evolution

We analize the renormalization group equations of supersymmetric QCD with N=1 for the evolution of parton distributions. For this purpose we develope a simple recursive algorithm in x-space to include both regular regions and supersymmetric regions in the evolution in the step approximation. Supersymmetric distributions are generated within a radiative model, with vanishing initial conditions for the superpartners. Here we focus on a scenario with broken susy, characterized by a lighter gluino coupled to the standard evolution and a decoupled scalar quark. Predictions for the all the distributions are presented.

Drell-Yan Non-Singlet Spin Cross Sections and Spin Asymmetry to $O(α_s^2)$ (II)

We present predictions for the non-singlet Drell-Yan longitudinal spin cross sections and spin asymmetry, $A_{LL}$, in proton-proton collisions at large $p_T$ at the RHIC energy of $200\gev$ at next-to-leading order QCD. The higher order corrections to the non-singlet polarized cross section, $σ_{NS}^{LL}$, are sizeable and similar to those found for the unpolarized cross section. The non-singlet asymmetry parameter, $A^{NS}_{LL}$, is very stable against higher order corrections and is a direct measurement of the non-singlet (i.e. valence) polarized quark distributions within the proton.

Exclusive Processes at Intermediate Energy, Quark-Hadron Duality and the Transition to Perturbative QCD

Experiments at CEBAF will scan the intermediate-energy region of the QCD dynamics for the nucleon form factors and for Compton Scattering. These experiments will definitely clarify the role of resummed perturbation theory and of quark-hadron duality (QCD sum rules) in this regime. With this perspective in mind, we review the factorization theorem of perturbative QCD for exclusive processes at intermediate energy scales, which embodies the transverse degrees of freedom of a parton and the Sudakov resummation of the corresponding large logarithms. We concentrate on the pion and proton electromagnetic form factors and on pion Compton scattering. New ingredients, such as the evolution of the pion wave function and the complete two-loop expression of the Sudakov factor, are included. The sensitivity of our predictions to the infrared cutoff for the Sudakov evolution is discussed. We also elaborate on QCD sum rule methods for Compton Scattering, which provide an alternative description of this process. We show that, by comparing the local duality analysis to resummed perturbation theory, it is possible to describe the transition of exclusive processes to perturbative QCD.

QCD Evolution Equations: Numerical Algorithms from the Laguerre Expansion

A complete numerical implementation, in both singlet and non-singlet sectors, of a very elegant method to solve the QCD Evolution equations, due to Furmanski and Petronzio, is presented. The algorithm is directly implemented in x-space by a Laguerre expansion of the parton distributions. All the leading-twist distributions are evolved: longitudinally polarized, transversely polarized and unpolarized, to NLO accuracy. The expansion is optimal at finite x, up to reasonably small x-values ($x\approx 10^{-3}$), below which the convergence of the expansion slows down. The polarized evolution is smoother, due to the less singular structure of the anomalous dimensions at small-x. In the region of fast convergence, which covers most of the usual perturbative applications, high numerical accuracy is achieved by expanding over a set of approximately 30 polynomials, with a very modest running time.

Spin Dependent Drell Yan in QCD to $O(α_s^2)$ (I). (The Non-Singlet Sector)

A study of the order $α_s^2$ corrections to the Drell Yan (non-singlet) cross section for incoming states of arbitrary longitudinal helicities is presented. The study is performed in the case of the transverse momentum distributions, $(q_T)$, of the lepton pair and extends the calculation of Ellis Martinelli and Petronzio (EMP) to the polarized case. We use the $\bar{MS}$ scheme and the t'Hooft-Veltman regularization for the helicity projectors. From our results one can obtain the bulk of the totally inclusive NNLO cross section for the production of a Drell Yan pair in the non-singlet sector by a simple integration over the heavy photon momentum. We show that in the $\bar{MS}$ helicity is not conserved, unless a finite renormalization is done to reenter into a physical scheme ($\bar{MS}_p$). This aspect of the calculation follows the same trend as in polarized production of single and double photon to $O(α_s^2)$. In the unpolarized limit we reproduce all the results of EMP.

Rapidity Correlations and $ΔG $ from Prompt Photon plus Jet Production in Polarized $pp$ Collisions

A study of prompt photon plus associated jet production is performed at next-to-leading order (O($αα_s^2$)) in QCD at $\sqrt{S}=200-500$ GeV, appropriate for the RHIC polarized $\vec{p}\vec{p}$ collider experiment. Momentum correlations between the jet and photon are examined and the utility of the process as a method for constraining the size and shape of the polarized gluon density of the proton $ΔG$ is examined.

Spin Dependent Drell-Yan beyond Leading Order: Non-Singlet Virtual corrections to $O(α_s^2)$

We present parton-level analytical results for the next-to-leading order non-singlet virtual and real corrections to the Drell-Yan differential cross-section. The dependence of the differential cross section on the helicity of the initial state partons is shown explicitly (the spins of the final state partons are summed). The calculation is implemented in dimensional regularization within the $\bar{MS}$ scheme and with the t'Hooft Veltman prescriptions for the n-dimensional $γ_5$. Both the polarized initial state and the unpolarized cross sections can be obtained from our result. Our unpolarized cross section agrees with the previous result of Ellis, Martinelli and Petronzio in the non-singlet sector.

Polarized Double Photon Production in QCD to Order $α_s$

We present a complete order $α_s$ analysis of the process $p p\to γγ+ X$ with polarized initial states, previously studied by us with leading order structure functions. We include in our calculation new sets of parton densities evolved in NLO QCD, such as those of Gehrmann and Stirling and of Glück et al., which incorporate the new anomalous dimensions of Mertig and Van Neerven in the evolution equation. A detailed phenomenological analysis is also given which includes the photon isolation. Our results indicate that the asymmetries, although not very large, should be substantial enough at RHIC energies to be measurable in future planned experiments.
