Critical measures on higher genus Riemann surfaces

Critical measures in the complex plane are saddle points for the logarithmic energy with external field. Their local and global structure was described by Martinez-Finkelshtein and Rakhmanov. In this paper we start the development of a theory of critical measures on higher genus Riemann surfaces, where the logarithmic energy is replaced by the energy with respect to a bipolar Green's kernel. We study a max-min problem for the bipolar Green's energy with external fields Re V where dV is a meromorphic differential. Under reasonable assumptions the max-min problem has a solution and we show that the corresponding equilibrium measure is a critical measure in the external field. In a special genus one situation we are able to show that the critical measure is supported on maximal trajectories of a meromorphic quadratic differential. We are motivated by applications to random lozenge tilings of a hexagon with periodic weightings. Correlations in these models are expressible in terms of matrix valued orthogonal polynomials. The matrix orthogonality is interpreted as (partial) scalar orthogonality on a Riemann surface. The theory of critical measures will be useful for the asymptotic analysis of a corresponding Riemann-Hilbert problem as we outline in the paper.

Nonlinear steepest descent approach to orthogonality on elliptic curves

We consider the recently introduced notion of denominators of Padé--like approximation problems on a Riemann surface. These denominators are related as in the classical case to the notion of orthogonality over a contour. We investigate a specific setup where the Riemann surface is a real elliptic curve and the measure of orthogonality is supported on one of the two real ovals. Using a characterization in terms of a Riemann--Hilbert problem, we determine the strong asymptotic behaviour of the corresponding orthogonal functions for large degree. The theory of vector bundles and the non-abelian Cauchy kernel play a prominent role even in this simplified setting, indicating the new challenges that the steepest descent method on a Riemann surface has to overcome.

On the tau function of the hypergeometric equation

The monodromy map for a rank-two system of differential equations with three Fuchsian singularities is classically solved by the Kummer formulæ for Gauss' hypergeometric functions. We define the tau-function of such a system as the generating function of the extended monodromy symplectomorphism, using an idea recently developed. This formulation allows us to determine the dependence of the tau-function on the monodromy data. Using the explicit solution of the monodromy problem, the tau-function is then explicitly written in terms of Barnes $G$-function. In particular, if the Fuchsian singularities are placed to $0$, $1$ and $\infty$, this gives the structure constants of the asymptotical formula of Iorgov-Gamayun-Lisovyy for solutions of Painlevé VI equation.

Openness of Regular Regimes of Complex Random Matrix Models

Consider the general complex polynomial external field $$ V(z)=\frac{z^{k}}{k}+\sum_{j=1}^{k-1} \frac{t_j z^j}{j}, \qquad t_j \in \mathbb{C}, \quad k \in \mathbb{N}. $$ Fix an equivalence class $\mathcal{T}$ of admissible contours whose members approach $\infty$ in two different directions and consider the associated max-min energy problem. When $k=2p$, $p \in \mathbb{N}$, and $\mathcal{T}$ contains the real axis, we show that the set of parameters $t_1, \cdots, t_{2p-1}$ which gives rise to a regular $q$-cut max-min (equilibrium) measure, $1 \leq q \leq 2p-1 $, is an open set in $\mathbb{C}^{2p-1}$. We use the implicit function theorem to prove that the endpoint equations are solvable in a small enough neighborhood of a regular $q$-cut point. We also establish the real-analyticity of the real and imaginary parts of the end-points for all $q$-cut regimes, $1 \leq q \leq 2p-1$, with respect to the real and imaginary parts of the complex parameters in the external field. Our choice of even $k$ and the equivalence class $\mathcal{T} \ni \mathbb{R}$ of admissible contours is only for the simplicity of exposition and our proof extends to all possible choices in an analogous way.

Tau-functions and monodromy symplectomorphisms

We derive a new Hamiltonian formulation of Schlesinger equations in terms of the dynamical $r$-matrix structure. The corresponding symplectic form is shown to be the pullback, under the monodromy map, of a natural symplectic form on the extended monodromy manifold. We show that Fock-Goncharov coordinates are log-canonical for the symplectic form on the extended monodromy manifold. Using these coordinates we define the symplectic potential on the monodromy manifold and interpret the isomonodromic tau-function as the generating function of the monodromy map. This, in particular, solves a recent conjecture by A.Its, O.Lisovyy and A.Prokhorov.

Stokes manifolds and cluster algebras

Stokes' manifolds, also known as wild character varieties, carry a natural symplectic structure. Our goal is to provide explicit log-canonical coordinates for these natural Poisson structures on the Stokes' manifolds of polynomial connections of rank $2$, thus including the second Painlevé\ hierarchy. This construction provides the explicit linearization of the Poisson structure first discovered by Flaschka and Newell and then rediscovered and generalized by Boalch. We show that, for a connection of degree $K$, the Stokes' manifold is a cluster manifold of type $A_{2K}$. The main idea is then applied to express explicitly also the log--canonical coordinates for the Poisson bracket introduced by Ugaglia in the context of Frobenius manifolds and then also applied by Bondal in the study of the symplectic groupoid of quadratic forms.

WKB expansion of Yang-Yang generating function and Bergman tau-function

We study the symplectic properties of the monodromy map of second order equations on a Riemann surface whose potential is meromorphic with double poles. We show that the Poisson bracket defined in terms of periods of meromorphic quadratic differential implies the Goldman Poisson structure on the monodromy manifoldThese results are applied to the WKB analysis of the equation. It is shown that the leading term in the WKB expansion of the generating function of the monodromy symplectomorphism (the "Yang-Yang function" of Nekrasov, Rosly and Shatashvili) is determined by the Bergman tau-function on the moduli space of meromorphic quadratic differentials.

On the spectral properties of the Hilbert transform operator on multi-intervals

Let $J,E\subset\mathbb R$ be two multi-intervals with non-intersecting interiors. Consider the following operator $$A:\, L^2( J )\to L^2(E),\ (Af)(x) = \frac 1π\int_{ J } \frac {f(y)\text{d} y}{x-y},$$ and let $A^\dagger$ be its adjoint. We introduce a self-adjoint operator $\mathscr K$ acting on $L^2(E)\oplus L^2(J)$, whose off-diagonal blocks consist of $A$ and $A^\dagger$. In this paper we study the spectral properties of $\mathscr K$ and the operators $A^\dagger A$ and $A A^\dagger$. Our main tool is to obtain the resolvent of $\mathscr K$, which is denoted by $\mathscr R$, using an appropriate Riemann-Hilbert problem, and then compute the jump and poles of $\mathscr R$ in the spectral parameter $λ$. We show that the spectrum of $\mathscr K$ has an absolutely continuous component $[0,1]$ if and only if $J$ and $E$ have common endpoints, and its multiplicity equals to their number. If there are no common endpoints, the spectrum of $\mathscr K$ consists only of eigenvalues and $0$. If there are common endpoints, then $\mathscr K$ may have eigenvalues imbedded in the continuous spectrum, each of them has a finite multiplicity, and the eigenvalues may accumulate only at $0$. In all cases, $\mathscr K$ does not have a singular continuous spectrum. The spectral properties of $A^\dagger A$ and $A A^\dagger$, which are very similar to those of $\mathscr K$, are obtained as well.

Spaces of abelian differentials and Hitchin's spectral covers

Using the embedding of the moduli space of generalized GL(n) Hitchin's spectral covers to the moduli space of meromorphic abelian differentials we study the variational formulae of the period matrix, the canonical bidifferential, the prime form and the Bergman tau function. This leads to residue formulae which generalize the Donagi-Markman formula for variations of the period matrix. Computation of second derivatives of the period matrix reproduces the formula derived by Baraglia and Zhenxi Huang using the framework of topological recursion.

Maximum amplitudes of finite-gap solutions for the focusing Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation

In this paper we prove that the maximum amplitude of a finite-gap solution to the focusing Nonlinear Schrödinger equation with given spectral bands does not exceed half of the sum of the length of all the bands. This maximum will be attained for certain choices of the initial phases. A similar result is also true for the defocusing Nonlinear Schrödinger equation.

On Asymptotic Regimes of Orthogonal Polynomials with Complex Varying Quartic Exponential Weight

We study the asymptotics of recurrence coefficients for monic orthogonal polynomials $π_n(z)$ with the quartic exponential weight $\exp[-N(\frac 12 z^2+\frac 14 tz^4)]$, where $t\in {\mathbb C}$ and $N\in{\mathbb N}$, $N\to\infty$. Our goal is to describe these asymptotic behaviors globally for $t\in {\mathbb C}$ in different regions. We also describe the "breaking" curves separating these regions, and discuss their special (critical) points. All these pieces of information combined provide the global asymptotic "phase portrait" of the recurrence coefficients of $π_n(z)$, which was studied numerically in [Constr. Approx. 41 (2015), 529-587, arXiv:1108.0321]. The main goal of the present paper is to provide a rigorous framework for the global asymptotic portrait through the nonlinear steepest descent analysis (with the $g$-function mechanism) of the corresponding Riemann-Hilbert problem (RHP) and the continuation in the parameter space principle. The latter allows to extend the nonlinear steepest descent analysis from some parts of the complex $t$-plane to all noncritical values of $t$. We also provide explicit solutions for recurrence coefficients in terms of the Riemann theta functions. The leading order behaviour of the recurrence coefficients in the full scaling neighbourhoods the critical points (double and triple scaling limits) was obtained in [Constr. Approx. 41 (2015), 529-587, arXiv:1108.0321] and [Asymptotics of complex orthogonal polynomials on the cross with varying quartic weight: critical point behaviour and the second Painlevé transcendents, in preparation].

Rogue waves in multiphase solutions of the focusing NLS equation

Rogue waves appearing on deep water or in optical fibres are often modelled by certain breather solutions of the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger (fNLS) equation which are referred to as solitons on finite background (SFBs). A more general modelling of rogue waves can be achieved via the consideration of multiphase, or finite-band, fNLS solutions of whom the standard SFBs and the structures forming due to their collisions represent particular, degenerate, cases. A generalised rogue wave notion then naturally enters as a large-amplitude localised coherent structure occurring within a finite-band fNLS solution. In this paper, we use the winding of real tori to show the mechanism of the appearance of such generalized rogue waves and derive an analytical criterion distinguishing finite-band potentials of the fNLS equation that exhibit generalised rogue waves.

The dependence on the monodromy data of the isomonodromic tau function

[Note: important Corrigendum now available at arXiv:1601.04790] The isomonodromic tau function defined by Jimbo-Miwa-Ueno vanishes on the Malgrange's divisor of generalized monodromy data for which a vector bundle is nontrivial, or, which is the same, a certain Riemann-Hilbert problem has no solution. In their original work, Jimbo, Miwa, Ueno did not derive the dependence on the (generalized) monodromy data (i.e. monodromy representation and Stokes' parameters). We fill the gap by providing a (simpler and more general) description in which all the parameters of the problem (monodromy-changing and monodromy-preserving) are dealt with at the same level. We thus provide variational formulae for the isomonodromic tau function with respect to the (generalized) monodromy data. The construction applies more generally: given any (sufficiently well-behaved) family of Riemann-Hilbert problems (RHP) where the jump matrices depend arbitrarily on deformation parameters, we can construct a one-form Omega (not necessarily closed) on the deformation space (Malgrange's differential), defined off Malgrange's divisor. We then introduce the notion of discrete Schlesinger transformation: it means that we allow the solution of the RHP to have poles (or zeros) at prescribed point(s). Even if Omega is not closed, its difference evaluated along the original solution and the transformed one, is shown to be the logarithmic differential (on the deformation space) of a function. As a function of the position of the points of the Schlesinger transformation, yields a natural generalization of Sato formula for the Baker-Akhiezer vector even in the absence of a tau function, and it realizes the solution of the RHP as such BA vector. Some exemples (Painleve' II and finite Toplitz/Hankel determinants) are provided.

Hankel Determinant Approach to Generalized Vorob'ev-Yablonski Polynomials and their Roots

Generalized Vorob'ev-Yablonski polynomials have been introduced by Clarkson and Mansfield in their study of rational solutions of the second Painlevé hierarchy. We present new Hankel determinant identities for the squares of these special polynomials in terms of Schur polynomials. As an application of the identities, we analyze the roots of generalized Vorob'ev-Yablonski polynomials and provide formulæ\, for the boundary curves of the highly regular patterns observed numerically in \cite{CM}.

Simple Lie algebras and topological ODEs

For a simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$ we define a system of linear ODEs with polynomial coefficients, which we call the topological equation of $\mathfrak g$-type. The dimension of the space of solutions regular at infinity is equal to the rank of the Lie algebra. For the simplest example $\mathfrak g=sl_2(\mathbb C)$ the regular solution can be expressed via products of Airy functions and their derivatives; this matrix valued function was used in our previous work for computing logarithmic derivatives of the Witten - Kontsevich tau-function. For an arbitrary simple Lie algebra we construct a basis in the space of regular solutions to the topological equation called generalized Airy resolvents. We also outline applications of the generalized Airy resolvents to computing the Witten and Fan - Jarvis - Ruan invariants of the Deligne - Mumford moduli spaces of stable algebraic curves.

Symplectic geometry of the moduli space of projective structures in homological coordinates

We introduce a natural symplectic structure on the moduli space of quadratic differentials with simple zeros and describe its Darboux coordinate systems in terms of so-called homological coordinates. We then show that this structure coincides with the canonical Poisson structure on the cotangent bundle of the moduli space of Riemann surfaces, and therefore the homological coordinates provide a new system of Darboux coordinates. We define a natural family of commuting "homological flows" on the moduli space of quadratic differentials and find the corresponding action-angle variables. The space of projective structures over the moduli space can be identified with the cotangent bundle upon selection of a reference projective connection that varies holomorphically and thus can be naturally endowed with a symplectic structure. Different choices of projective connections of this kind (Bergman, Schottky, Wirtinger) give rise to equivalent symplectic structures on the space of projective connections but different symplectic polarizations: the corresponding generating functions are found. We also study the monodromy representation of the Schwarzian equation associated with a projective connection, and we show that the natural symplectic structure on the the space of projective connections induces the Goldman Poisson structure on the character variety. Combined with results of Kawai, this result shows the symplectic equivalence between the embeddings of the cotangent bundle into the space of projective structures given by the Bers and Bergman projective connections.

Universality conjecture and results for a model of several coupled positive-definite matrices

The paper contains two main parts: in the first part, we analyze the general case of $p\geq 2$ matrices coupled in a chain subject to Cauchy interaction. Similarly to the Itzykson-Zuber interaction model, the eigenvalues of the Cauchy chain form a multi level determinantal point process. We first compute all correlations functions in terms of Cauchy biorthogonal polynomials and locate them as specific entries of a $(p+1)\times (p+1)$ matrix valued solution of a Riemann-Hilbert problem. In the second part, we fix the external potentials as classical Laguerre weights. We then derive strong asymptotics for the Cauchy biorthogonal polynomials when the support of the equilibrium measures contains the origin. As a result, we obtain a new family of universality classes for multi-level random determinantal point fields which include the Bessel$_ν$ universality for $1$-level and the Meijer-$G$ universality for $2$-level. Our analysis uses the Deift-Zhou nonlinear steepest descent method and the explicit construction of a $(p+1)\times (p+1)$ origin parametrix in terms of Meijer G-functions. The solution of the full Riemann-Hilbert problem is derived rigorously only for $p=3$ but the general framework of the proof can be extended to the Cauchy chain of arbitrary length $p$.

A degeneration of two-phase solutions of focusing NLS via Riemann-Hilbert problems

Two-phase solutions of focusing NLS equation are classically constructed out of an appropriate Riemann surface of genus two, and expressed in terms of the corresponding theta-function. We show here that in a certain limiting regime such solutions reduce to some elementary ones called "Solitons on unstable condensate". This degeneration turns out to be conveniently studied by means of basic tools from the theory of Riemann-Hilbert problems. In particular no acquaintance with Riemann surfaces and theta-function is required for such analysis.

Darboux transformations and random point processes

In this paper we describe a general method to derive formulas relating the gap probability of some classical determinantal random point process (Airy, Pearcey and Hermite) with the gap probability of the processes related to the same kernels with "wanderers", "inliers" and "outliers". In this way, we generalize the Painlevé-like formula found by Baik for the Baik-Ben Arous-Péché distribution to many different cases, both in the one and multi-time case. The method is not ad-hoc and relies upon the notion of discrete Schlesinger transformations for Riemann-Hilbert problems.

On Sobolev instability of the interior problem of tomography

In this paper we continue investigation of the interior problem of tomography that was started in \cite{BKT2}. As is known, solving the interior problem {with prior data specified on a finite collection of intervals $I_i$} is equivalent to analytic continuation of a function from $I_i$ to an open set ${\bf J}$. In the paper we prove that this analytic continuation can be obtained with the help of a simple explicit formula, which involves summation of a series. Our second result is that the operator of analytic continuation is not stable for any pair of Sobolev spaces regardless of how close the set ${\bf J}$ is to $I_i$. Our main tool is the singular value decomposition of the operator $\mathcal H^{-1}_e$ that arises when the interior problem is reduced to a problem of inverting the Hilbert transform from incomplete data. The asymptotics of the singular values and singular functions of $\mathcal H^{-1}_e$, the latter being valid uniformly on compact subsets {of the interior of $I_i$}, was obtained in \cite{BKT2}. {Using these asymptotics we can accurately measure the degree of ill-posedness of the analytic continuation as a function of the target interval ${\bf J}$.} Our {last} result is the convergence of the asymptotic approximation of the singular functions {in the $L^2(I_i)$ sense}.

Singular value decomposition of a finite Hilbert transform defined on several intervals and the interior problem of tomography: the Riemann-Hilbert problem approach

We study the asymptotics of singular values and singular functions of a Finite Hilbert transform (FHT), which is defined on several intervals. Transforms of this kind arise in the study of the interior problem of tomography. We suggest a novel approach based on the technique of the matrix Riemann-Hilbert problem and the steepest descent method of Deift-Zhou. We obtain a family of matrix RHPs depending on the spectral parameter $λ$ and show that the singular values of the FHT coincide with the values of $λ$ for which the RHP is not solvable. Expressing the leading order solution as $λ\to 0$ of the RHP in terms of the Riemann Theta functions, we prove that the asymptotics of the singular values can be obtained by studying the intersections of the locus of zeroes of a certain Theta function with a straight line. This line can be calculated explicitly, and it depends on the geometry of the intervals that define the FHT. The leading order asymptotics of the singular functions and singular values are explicitly expressed in terms of the Riemann Theta functions and of the period matrix of the corresponding normalized differentials, respectively. We also obtain the error estimates for our asymptotic results.

Zeros of large degree Vorob'ev-Yablonski polynomials via a Hankel determinant identity

In the present paper we derive a new Hankel determinant representation for the square of the Vorob'ev-Yablonski polynomial $\mathcal{Q}_n(x),x\in\mathbb{C}$. These polynomials are the major ingredients in the construction of rational solutions to the second Painlevé equation $u_{xx}=xu+2u^3+α$. As an application of the new identity, we study the zero distribution of $\mathcal{Q}_n(x)$ as $n\rightarrow\infty$ by asymptotically analyzing a certain collection of (pseudo) orthogonal polynomials connected to the aforementioned Hankel determinant. Our approach reproduces recently obtained results in the same context by Buckingham and Miller \cite{BM}, which used the Jimbo-Miwa Lax representation of PII equation and the asymptotical analysis thereof.

Strong asymptotics of the orthogonal polynomials with respect to a measure supported on the plane

We consider the orthogonal polynomials $\{P_{n}(z)\}$ with respect to the measure $|z-a|^{2N c} {\rm e}^{-N |z|^2} \,{\rm d} A(z)$ over the whole complex plane. We obtain the strong asymptotic of the orthogonal polynomials in the complex plane and the location of their zeros in a scaling limit where $n$ grows to infinity with $N$. The asymptotics are described in terms of three (probability) measures associated with the problem. The first measure is the limit of the counting measure of zeros of the polynomials, which is captured by the $g$-function much in the spirit of ordinary orthogonal polynomials on the real line. The second measure is the equilibrium measure that minimizes a certain logarithmic potential energy, supported on a region $K$ of the complex plane. The third measure is the harmonic measure of $K^c$ with a pole at $\infty$. This appears as the limit of the probability measure given (up to the normalization constant) by the squared modulus of the $n$-th orthogonal polynomial times the orthogonality measure, i.e. $|P_n(z)|^2 |z-a|^{2N c} {\rm e}^{-N |z|^2} \,{\rm d} A(z)$. The compact region $K$ that is the support of the second measure undergoes a topological transition under the variation of the parameter $t=n/N$; in a double scaling limit near the critical point given by $t_c=a(a+2\sqrt c)$ we observe the Hastings-McLeod solution to Painlevé\ II in the asymptotics of the orthogonal polynomials.

Strong asymptotics for Cauchy biorthogonal polynomials with application to the Cauchy two--matrix model

We apply the nonlinear steepest descent method to a class of 3x3 Riemann-Hilbert problems introduced in connection with the Cauchy two-matrix random model. The general case of two equilibrium measures supported on an arbitrary number of intervals is considered. In this case, we solve the Riemann-Hilbert problem for the outer parametrix in terms of sections of a spinorial line bundle on a three-sheeted Riemann surface of arbitrary genus and establish strong asymptotic results for the Cauchy biorthogonal polynomials.

Universality for the focusing nonlinear Schroedinger equation at the gradient catastrophe point: Rational breathers and poles of the tritronquee solution to Painleve I

The semiclassical (zero-dispersion) limit of the one-dimensional focusing Nonlinear Schroedinger equation (NLS) with decaying potentials is studied in a full scaling neighborhood D of the point of gradient catastrophe (x_0,t_0). This neighborhood contains the region of modulated plane wave (with rapid phase oscillations), as well as the region of fast amplitude oscillations (spikes). In this paper we establish the following universal behaviors of the NLS solutions near the point of gradient catastrophe: i) each spike has the height 3|q_0(x_0,t_0,epsilon)| and uniform shape of the rational breather solution to the NLS, scaled to the size O(epsilon); ii) the location of the spikes are determined by the poles of the tritronquee solution of the Painleve I (P1) equation through an explicit diffeomorphism between D and a region into the Painleve plane; iii) if (x,t) belongs to D but lies away from the spikes, the asymptotics of the NLS solution q(x,t,epsilon) is given by the plane wave approximation q_0(x,t,epsilon), with the correction term being expressed in terms of the tritronquee solution of P1. The latter result confirms the conjecture of Dubrovin, Grava and Klein about the form of the leading order correction in terms of the tritronquee solution in the non-oscillatory region around (x_0,t_0). We conjecture that the P1 hierarchy occurs at higher degenerate catastrophe points and that the amplitudes of the spikes are odd multiples of the amplitude at the corresponding catastrophe point. Our technique is based on the nonlinear steepest descent method for matrix Riemann-Hilbert Problems and discrete Schlesinger isomonodromic transformations.

Asymptotics of orthogonal polynomials with complex varying quartic weight: global structure, critical point behaviour and the first Painleve' equation

We study the asymptotics of recurrence coefficients for monic orthogonal polynomials p_n(z) with the quartic exponential weight exp [-N (1/2 z^2 + t/4 z^4)], where t is complex. Our goals are: A) to describe the regions of different asymptotic behaviour (different genera) globally in t; B) to identify all the critical points, and; C) to study in details the asymptotics in a full neighborhood near of critical points (double scaling limit), including at and near the poles of Painleve' I solutions y(v) that are known to provide the leading correction term in this limit. Our results are: A) We found global (in t) asymptotic of recurrence coefficients and of "square-norms" for the orthogonal polynomials for different configurations of the contours of integration. Special code was developed to analyze all possible cases. B) In addition to the known critical point t_0=- 1/ 12, we found new critical points t_1=1/15 and t_2=1/4. C) We derived the leading order behavior of the recurrence coefficients (together with the error estimates) at and around the poles of y(v) near the critical points t_0,t_1 in what we called the triple scaling limit. We proved that the recurrence coefficients have unbounded "spikes" near the poles of y(v) and calculated the "universal" shape of these spikes for different cases. The nonlinear steepest descent method for Riemann-Hilbert Problem (RHP) is the main technique used in the paper. We note that the RHP near the critical points is very similar to the RHP describing the semiclassical limit of the focusing NLS near the point of gradient catastrophe that the authors solved previously.

Spectra of random Hermitian matrices with a small-rank external source: supercritical and subcritical regimes

Random Hermitian matrices with a source term arise, for instance, in the study of non-intersecting Brownian walkers \cite{Adler:2009a, Daems:2007} and sample covariance matrices \cite{Baik:2005}. We consider the case when the $n\times n$ external source matrix has two distinct real eigenvalues: $a$ with multiplicity $r$ and zero with multiplicity $n-r$. The source is small in the sense that $r$ is finite or $r=\mathcal O(n^γ)$, for $0< γ<1$. For a Gaussian potential, Péché \cite{Peche:2006} showed that for $|a|$ sufficiently small (the subcritical regime) the external source has no leading-order effect on the eigenvalues, while for $|a|$ sufficiently large (the supercritical regime) $r$ eigenvalues exit the bulk of the spectrum and behave as the eigenvalues of $r\times r$ Gaussian unitary ensemble (GUE). We establish the universality of these results for a general class of analytic potentials in the supercritical and subcritical regimes.

Spectra of Random Hermitian Matrices with a Small-Rank External Source: The critical and near-critical regimes

Random Hermitian matrices are used to model complex systems without time-reversal invariance. Adding an external source to the model can have the effect of shifting some of the matrix eigenvalues, which corresponds to shifting some of the energy levels of the physical system. We consider the case when the $n\times n$ external source matrix has two distinct real eigenvalues: $a$ with multiplicity $r$ and zero with multiplicity $n-r$. For a Gaussian potential, it was shown by Péché \cite{Peche:2006} that when $r$ is fixed or grows sufficiently slowly with $n$ (a small-rank source), $r$ eigenvalues are expected to exit the main bulk for $|a|$ large enough. Furthermore, at the critical value of $a$ when the outliers are at the edge of a band, the eigenvalues at the edge are described by the $r$-Airy kernel. We establish the universality of the $r$-Airy kernel for a general class of analytic potentials for $r=\mathcal{O}(n^γ)$ for $0\leqγ<1/12$.

Boutroux curves with external field: equilibrium measures without a minimization problem

The nonlinear steepest descent method for rank-two systems relies on the notion of g-function. The applicability of the method ranges from orthogonal polynomials (and generalizations) to Painleve transcendents, and integrable wave equations (KdV, NonLinear Schroedinger, etc.). For the case of asymptotics of generalized orthogonal polynomials with respect to varying complex weights we can recast the requirements for the Cauchy-transform of the equilibrium measure into a problem of algebraic geometry and harmonic analysis and completely solve the existence and uniqueness issue without relying on the minimization of a functional. This addresses and solves also the issue of the ``free boundary problem'', determining implicitly the curves where the zeroes of the orthogonal polynomials accumulate in the limit of large degrees and the support of the measure. The relevance to the quasi--linear Stokes phenomenon for Painleve equations is indicated. A numerical algorithm to find these curves in some cases is also explained. Massless scalar field in two-dimensional de Sitter universe

We study the massless minimally coupled scalar field on a two--dimensional de Sitter space-time in the setting of axiomatic quantum field theory. We construct the invariant Wightman distribution obtained as the renormalized zero--mass limit of the massive one. Insisting on gauge invariance of the model we construct a vacuum state and a Hilbert space of physical states which are invariant under the action of the whole de Sitter group. We also present the integral expression of the conserved charge which generates the gauge invariance and propose a definition of dual field.
