Primitive rational points on expanding horocycles in products of the modular surface with the torus

We prove effective equidistribution of primitive rational points and of primitive rational points defined by monomials along long horocycle orbits in products of the torus and the modular surface. This answers a question posed in joint work by the first and the last named author with Shahar Mozes and Uri Shapira. Under certain congruence conditions we prove the joint equidistribution of conjugate rational points in the two-torus and the modular surface.

Integer points and their orthogonal lattices

Linnik proved in the late 1950's the equidistribution of integer points on large spheres under a congruence condition. The congruence condition was lifted in 1988 by Duke (building on a break-through by Iwaniec) using completely different techniques. We conjecture that this equidistribution result also extends to the pairs consisting of a vector on the sphere and the shape of the lattice in its orthogonal complement. We use a joining result for higher rank diagonalizable actions to obtain this conjecture under an additional congruence condition.

On the complexity of a putative counterexample to the $p$-adic Littlewood conjecture

Let $|| \cdot ||$ denote the distance to the nearest integer and, for a prime number $p$, let $| \cdot |_p$ denote the $p$-adic absolute value. In 2004, de Mathan and Teulié asked whether $\inf_{q \ge 1} \, q \cdot || q α|| \cdot | q |_p = 0$ holds for every badly approximable real number $α$ and every prime number $p$. Among other results, we establish that, if the complexity of the sequence of partial quotients of a real number $α$ grows too rapidly or too slowly, then their conjecture is true for the pair $(α, p)$ with $p$ an arbitrary prime.

Escape of mass and entropy for diagonal flows in real rank one situations

Let $G$ be a connected semisimple Lie group of real rank 1 with finite center, let $Γ$ be a non-uniform lattice in $G$ and $a$ any diagonalizable element in $G$. We investigate the relation between the metric entropy of $a$ acting on the homogeneous space $Γ\backslash G$ and escape of mass. Moreover, we provide bounds on the escaping mass and, as an application, we show that the Hausdorff dimension of the set of orbits (under iteration of $a$) which miss a fixed open set is not full.

Simultaneous dense and nondense orbits for commuting maps

We show that, for two commuting automorphisms of the torus and for two elements of the Cartan action on compact higher rank homogeneous spaces, many points have drastically different orbit structures for the two maps. Specifically, using measure rigidity, we show that the set of points that have dense orbit under one map and nondense orbit under the second has full Hausdorff dimension.

Diophantine approximations on fractals

We exploit dynamical properties of diagonal actions to derive results in Diophantine approximations. In particular, we prove that the continued fraction expansion of almost any point on the middle third Cantor set (with respect to the natural measure) contains all finite patterns (hence is well approximable). Similarly, we show that for a variety of fractals in [0,1]^2, possessing some symmetry, almost any point is not Dirichlet improvable (hence is well approximable) and has property C (after Cassels). We then settle by similar methods a conjecture of M. Boshernitzan saying that there are no irrational numbers x in the unit interval such that the continued fraction expansions of {nx mod1 : n is a natural number} are uniformly eventually bounded.

The distribution of closed geodesics on the modular surface, and Duke's theorem

We give an ergodic theoretic proof of a theorem of Duke about equidistribution of closed geodesics on the modular surface. The proof is closely related to the work of Yu. Linnik and B. Skubenko, who in particular proved this equidistribution under an additional congruence assumption on the discriminant. We give a more conceptual treatment using entropy theory, and show how to use positivity of the discriminant as a substitute for Linnik's congruence condition.

A joining classification and a special case of Raghunathan's conjecture in positive characteristic (with an appendix by Kevin Wortman)

We prove the classification of joinings for maximal horospherical subgroups acting on homogeneous spaces without any restriction on the characteristic. Using the linearization technique we deduce a special case of Raghunathan's orbit closure conjecture. In the appendix quasi-isometries of higher rank lattices in semisimple algebraic groups over fields of positive characteristic are characterized.

Distribution of periodic torus orbits and Duke's theorem for cubic fields

We study periodic torus orbits on spaces of lattices. Using the action of the group of adelic points of the underlying tori, we define a natural equivalence relation on these orbits, and show that the equivalence classes become uniformly distributed. This is a cubic analogue of Duke's theorem about the distribution of closed geodesics on the modular surface: suitably interpreted, the ideal classes of a cubic totally real field are equidistributed in the modular 5-fold SL_3(Z)\SL_3(R)/SO_3(R). In particular, this proves (a stronger form of) the folklore conjecture that the collection of maximal compact flats in SL_3(Z)\SL_3(R)/SO_3(R) of volume less than V becomes equidistributed as V goes to infinity. The proof combines subconvexity estimates, measure classification, and local harmonic analysis.

Morphic heights and periodic points

An approach to the calculation of local canonical morphic heights is described, motivated by the analogy between the classical height in Diophantine geometry and entropy in algebraic dynamics. We consider cases where the local morphic height is expressed as an integral average of the logarithmic distance to the closure of the periodic points of the underlying morphism. The results may be thought of as a kind of morphic Jensen formula.
